    Dear Friends,

The Cleveland Zoological Society is continuously seeking ways to serve the community and advance

the Zoo, rom running one o the biggest and best membership programs in the region to generating

steady unding or educational access programs that reach thousands o underserved children.

In 2008, we celebrated 10 years o our historic operating agreement with Cleveland Metroparks, which

ormalized the Zoo Societys nancial support or the wonderul asset that is the Zoo. In those 10

years, the Zoo Society has provided $15 million to the Zoo in operating support, making possible such

signature programs as the ZooBus and Distance Learning, while also encouraging other educational

outreach and wildlie conservation programs to develop, grow and thrive.

This private/public partnership allows the Zoo to dream boldly and to move orward condently. In

the past 10 years thanks to generous donors rom all walks o lie the Zoo Society has stepped

up commitments or capital improvements, including signicant money raised or Astraan Aventre

(2000), the Sarah Ason Steffee Center for Zooogca Mecne (2004) and the currently under construction

    Afrcan Eephant Crossng (2011).

The Zoo is a successul leader in local and international wildlie conservation programs, thanks to the winning

combination o its dedicated, expert sta and the Zoo Societys nancial commitment. Funding or these programs

now averages $350,000 annually in special grants distributed to individuals working to preserve wildlie in wild

places in Northeast Ohio and around the globe.

While the economic downturn o 2008 presented challenges or the Zoo Society, as it did or many not-or-prot

organizations, we are happy to report that we are weathering the storm, thanks to lean and ecient practices, and

a very generous community that sees the value o having one o our nations best zoos right here in Cleveland.

The Zoo/Zoo Society partnership is a unique relationship working to enhance conservation, education and animal

care or the next generation o scientists, visitors and animals. Thank you or your continued support.

2008 Scott Neotropca Fn Grant Recpents

Through the generous support o the Scott Neotropical Fund, the Zoo and Zoo Society have

committed more than $500,000 over the past 10 years or programs that make a dierence

in the neotropics (Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean). In 2008

alone, 12 projects were supported by the Fund.

The money, donated to the Zoo Society, is distributed through small grants chosen by

the Zoos Conservation & Science sta. Funded projects benet the local people, wildlie

and habitats o the neotropics and range rom endangered sea turtle conservation in the

Caribbean to disease transmission studies o primates in Argentina.

While these grants are making a dierence abroad, the Zoo Society plays an important role

or our local constituents, raising awareness o key conservation issues. A robust schedule o

behind-the-scenes tours orZooKeepers Circle members connects supporters with curators,

keepers and important initiatives designed to improve the uture or wildlie. And, thanks to

a specially designated und, each year the Zoo Society hosts a signature event, the David

Steffee Address, which ocuses on emerging trends in conservation and veterinary medicine.

In 2008, Dr. William Karesh spoke about One World, One Health and shared insights about

the intersection o animal and human health. Dr. Karesh leads the global health programs o

the Wildlie Conservation Society as Vice President o the Wildlie Health Center, located on

the grounds o the Bronx Zoo.

Partnering for the Future of Elephants

The Afrcan Eephant Crossng project achieved several important milestones in 2008, including groundbreaking, environmentally

appropriate handling o the demolition and construction waste, and several complex animal moves. This exhibit will be one o themost visible and impressive exhibits ever built at the Zoo and will enhance the quality o lie in Northeast Ohio through education

    and tourism.

On September 24, the Zoo and Zoo Society broke ground on the $25-million exhibit. At that time, the Zoo Society presented its rst

contribution to the project $2 million to the Cleveland Metroparks Commissioners.

By the end o 2008, the Zoo Society had raised $10.3 million or Afrcan Eephant Crossng. A $500,000 git rom The Cleveland

Foundation and a $300,000 git rom the Kent H. Smith Charitable Trust helped bring the total amount raised or the campaign to

80% o the campaign goal. The campaign has already seen more than 400 oundations, corporations and individuals donate to the

project, which is more than any other capital campaign in Zoo Society history.

The project is also now ormally registered or LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certication with the U.S.

Green Building Council. The exhibit will be a test case or greening a space used jointly by humans and animals. It will provide a

creative opportunity to increase public awareness o alternative energy, sustainable use and green-collar careers.

Meanwhile, the Zoo relocated its beloved Nile hippopotamus to an o-exhibit retirement condo and

transerred its three emale Arican elephants to the Columbus Zoo or the duration o construction.

It is no small eat to move large mammals saely, and we celebrate with the Zoo on achieving these

major milestones in the midst o a very busy year.

Locally and globally, eorts are being made to secure the uture or elephants. The Zoo Society

brought in television star and animal advocate Je Corwin to present Tales rom the Field to

ZooKeepers Circle members in August. Je awed the crowd with stories about lming in exotic

countries and working with rare and endangered animals. While visiting, Je taped a public

service announcement about the importance o Afrcan Eephant Crossng or elephants in zoos

and their cousins in the wild. You may see his message at ClevelandZooSociety.org.

Partnering throughTechnology & InnovationAs technology advances, there are more and more ways to partner or the uture o the Zoo. The Zoo

Society is committed to making it easier (and more un!) to support your Zoo, and in 2008 introduced twonew electronic Donation Stations. One is located in The RanForest, with unds supporting a variety o

rain orest conservation projects. The second is in the Exhibit Hall, with unds supporting Afrcan Eephant

Crossng. These Donation Stations were made possible by a challenge grant rom The Fred A. Lennon

Charitable Trust, paired with matching unds rom The William J. and Dorothy K. ONeill Foundation.

Technology has also allowed the Zoo Society to take membership renewals, ticket purchases and

donations on the Zoo Societys Web site. In 2008, our Web site reached the $1-million mark thats $1

million raised online in one year! This signicant achievement is a testament to the Zoo Societys many

    generous supporters thank you!

When Jinny and Bob Snead purchased a generous lie insurance policy beneting the Cleveland

Zoological Society, they knew how they wanted their git to be used in support o our conservation

mission. A particular interest o the Sneads during their lietime was reaching children particularlythose who otherwise might not have access to the Zoo. By making such a special git to the Zoo Society,

this generous couple ensured that their love o animals and concern or underserved children will live

on in perpetuity. The Jinny and Bob Snead Fund, as part o the Zoo Societys ZooFutures Fund, will be

used to strengthen and support our core mission, with a special ocus on Education Access a cluster

o programs and scholarships that each year enables thousands o needy children to experience the Zoo

and its great conservation science education.

Named Funds may be established through a bequest or outright git o $250,000 or more to the

ZooFutures Fund o the Cleveland Zoological Society. Gits o any amount are always welcome, and are

used to strengthen and support our conservation mission.

Ten years ater its rst issue,

Zmagazine is still bringing members stories about conservation projects, animals at theZoo, upcoming events and more.Zbegan publishing in 1999 and has won six awards over the years, both locally and

regionally, recognizing not only its design elements, but also the quality o the content presented in each issue.

2008 brought the rst edition o a new publication, ZtoU. This newsletter ocuses on conservation issues supported

by the Zoo and Zoo Society, and brings pertinent event inormation to readers.

The Zoo Societys ZooKeepers Circle our VIP membership program turned 10 years old in 2008. Since its inception,

this program has grown to more than 1,000 loyal and generous members who enjoy exclusive access to the Zoo,

including behind-the-scenes tours and meet-the-keeper opportunities.

Another new addition in 2008 was

A Spot to Remember. The ZooTrbtes program is the honor and memorial programthrough which individuals may honor someone special in their lives. A Spot to Remember is located on the Ticket Plaza

In August, 2008, the 32-ton terra cotta sculptures by Viktor Schreckengost, Mammoth & Mastodon (pictured opposite

page), were saely removed rom the Pachyderm Building. They will undergo conservation treatment and return to

the Zoo in a prominent, new location.

    Cleveland Metroparks Zoo conservationists

were especially grateul in 2008 ater

rescuing a critically endangered turtle that

was presumed dead ater being washed away

in a food in northern Vietnam.

    The 150-pound Swinhoes sot-shell turtle

(Rafetus swinhoei), which is the only known

living specimen o its kind in the wild, was

rst discovered by experts Doug Hendrie

and Tim McCormack with the Zoos Asian

The Swinhoes turtle is the largest reshwater

turtle in the world and was thought to have

in captivity, including two at a zoo in China

and one in the Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi.
