What a winter this was. It started out normal enough.GayLynnandIdrovetoOklahomatospendChristmaswithmysonandhisfamily.Thetripoutandbackwas

largelyuneventfulexceptbattlinglakeeffectsnowfromClevelandtoJamestownonthereturnleg,butthat’snotunusualinwinterandtheGrandCherokeeperformedasoneexpectsJeepstoperform:predictably. Other than having to spend occasional time in thesnowencrusted,passinglanetogetaroundthoselesscomfortablewithdriftingsnow,allwentasexpected.

January,too,wasunsurprising,atleastforme.Myneighbordidn’tfareaswellhavingtospendthiswinterinUpstateNYratherthanSoutheastAsiawithoutasinglemaidorbutlertofetchhisdrinksorcleanhiscar,butevenThak’smoodseemednormalenough.HewouldhavefeltbetterhadheaccompaniedMikeBallogandmetoDaytonaforthe2017Rolex24HoursatDaytona,butThakisonewholikestostopeveryhourorsotowalkaroundandforwhom“roughing it” means eating at a restaurant with a place settingcontaining fewer than 8 pieces of flatware or having only onesommelier.SometimesIwonderaboutThak,Ireallydo,buthe’sthebestfriendtohave,readyforshort-termadventuresatthedropofahatandtrulythesortofpersonyou’dhandyourbeertobeforeshouting,“Holdmybeerandwatchthis!”Regardless,itwouldbejustMikeandImakingthejourneytoDaytona,somethingthatis,well,whatwedoeveryyear.2017wasjustanotheryearorsoitseemed.

Even theweekof theRolex24Hoursseemedprettymuchas italwaysdoes.Oh, therewasaheavysnowstormthenightofourleavingcentralNYinlateJanuary,MikeandIhittingtheroadforDaytona theTuesday before raceweekend.The only differencewasthatwetooktheGrandCherokeeratherthanMike’sJettaTDI.Thatwasadifference,butonlyaslightone.Thakwouldpointout,ofcourse,thattheGrandCherokeeistheautomotiveequivalentofeatingatarestaurantwithplacesettingshavingmorethan8piecesofflatware andhavingmultiple sommeliers, but... Apparently,ThakandIhavebothreachedthatstagewhereweappreciatebeing“cosseted,”atermthatisnolongerjustforlarge,Britishsedans(“saloons”ifyou’repretentiousoranativeBritorcan’tspell).

Daytona, too, was normal, meaning outstanding. Our first day,Wednesday,wasspentatPorscheofOrlando,receivingatourofthefacilitiesandalookatmanyfinePorschesofalldescription,newandused(excuseme,“pre-owned”).PorscheofOrlandohasbecomethefirststoponourannualRolex24HoursofDaytonaweekend,andit’sneveradisappointment.Theywelcomeduswithopenarmsandshowedusafineselectionofnewandpre-ownedPorsches,plusaneclecticcollectionofinterestingvehiclestakeninontrade,everythingfromaJeepWranglertoVipersandLotuses.There’salwayssomething tocatch theeyeandappeal toalmosteveryautomotivetasteatPorscheofOrlando.

As for raceweekend, itself, theDeltaWing carmay no longerbearound,adisappointment,buttherewerePorschesgalore,thenewCadillac racing effort in the new IMSADPi class, factoryCorvettes, the Ford GT40 team, Lamborghinis and many othercarsandteamstoonumerousformymemorytorecall.IadmitthatIstillmissthediversityoftheRolex24HourEventof15+years

ago,whensinglecar,lowbuckteamsweremoreprevalent,butthe2017teamswereimpressiveandnoonecoulddenytheirfireandtheirdedication to thesport.Every team isawondrous thing tobeholdandIdon’tmeanjustthecars.

Ifyou’vebeentoaRolex24HoursyouknowwhatabusyweekendtheRolex24Hourraceis.Mike’sFitBitrecordedadailyoutputof20,000+stepsforeachofus.Idon’tknowaboutMike,butforme20,000 ismyannualoutputnotmydaily.Even theweathercooperatedwithmild temperaturesand rain fallingsolely in theearlyhours,Sunday.HereIhavetoconfessthatratherthangettingoutintheearlymorninghourstohauntthegaragesandwatchtheteamsrepairbrokencars,Idecidedtoremaininthetentandavoidgetting wet. Thak, I apologize. Sometimes comfort does trumpdedicationtosportevenifthecaterersofferonlysporks.

WiththeconclusionoftheRolex24HoursandsafelybackinNYwinterseemedtobewhatwinteralwaysis,nothingbutgraywithmetryingtoholdonuntilraceandbaseballseasonsbegin.Withwinter one third gone and the Rolex 24 Hours in the rearviewmirror,though,IdecidedtomaketheWinterof2017excitinganddifferentbyfallingandbreakingmyrightleg.

UntilthisyearI’vespentarathersimplelife,noseriousillnessesandnobrokenbones, at least untilGroundhogDaywhen I fellonmyownpropertybreakingmy lower right leg (a“tib-fib” toyoumedicalgeeks).Forthosewhoarewondering,IhavenoideawhetherornotIsawmyshadow.WhetherIdidornot,abrokenlegmeans6-12moreweeksofwinterevenif thesunisoutandthewildflowers are in bloom. Since the fall I’ve been confinedto a good friend’s carriage house, the only alternative to beingreleasedtoanursing/rehabhome,towatchtheworldgoby.I’marealmartyr,butabrokenlegisdifferentthananythingI’veeverdone somaybewinter isn’t that predictable after all. If nothingelse,beingconfined toa reclinerorbed forall theseweekshasremindedmeof the importanceofgoodfriends,althoughTurcoI’mstillwaitingforthatbourbon.Iammostappreciativeofgoodfriendswhohavevisited,sentgreetings,broughtfoodanddrinkandinmany,manywaysmademerealizehowgoodIhaveit…brokenlegnotwithstanding.Youfolksarethegreatestandyou’rekeepingmesaneorforwhatpassesforit.HappySpring!

Onadifferentnote,aseditorofthisfinenewsletter,Iamcuriousabouthowmany folksareactually readingTheRedlineReport.BackwhenwepublishedahardcopyIreceivedmanycomments,oralandwritten,butsinceshiftingto thenewelectronicformat,not so many. About the only folks who comment are internetlurkersandthey’renotevenmembersoftheCNYorthePCA.Sotellmeifyouwouldbyphone,email,snailmailorcarrierpigeon,whatareyourthoughtsabouttheelectronicversionofTheRedlineReportwhencomparedwith theold,hardcopyversion?Wouldyouratherwereturntotheoldhardcopyformatorkeepitasitis?Shouldwereturntothehalf-page(smaller)formatorkeepthefull-page?I’mnotsayingwecandoanythingaboutit,printingandmailingcostsare terriblyexpensive,but itmighthelpmetoseewhat,ifanything,canbedonetoimprovewhatwebringtoyoueachquarter. It’syourclub, it’syournewsletterand I’mhere tohelp.Ireallyam.So,letmeknow. RL

Oh, the humanity... or the Porsche 356

JoyceandIjustgotbackfromMauiyesterdayandinmy,fartoomanyemailswasonefromRichErtinger thatagarage-find356Speedstersoldfor$500,000.Iansweredhowverysadthatmademefeelaswepurchaseda‘56356Speedsterin1961andtradeditinonourpurchaseofour‘64coupe.WeboughtthatSpeedsterfor$1,500andtradedinourSpeedsterfor$800in tradeforourSpeedster.Howsadisthat?

While we battled the snow...

Inmid-February,JoyceandIwentonadrivingtouroftheGeorgiacoastandSouthernFlorida.OnourwaytoMiami,wegotatextfromCNYmember Gene Raymondi saying that he was racinginthePCAclubraceatSebring.Wechangedourplans,madeaquickdetourandstoppedinattheracetowatchforafewhoursonSaturdayafternoon.WherewouldyouratherspendaSaturdayafternoon? South Beach Miami or Sebring? Bikinis or tirebarriers?Youhavetohaveyourprioritiesstraight.ThiswasmyfirsttimevisitingSebring.It’saninterestingplace.Wishwehadmoretimetoexploretheinfield.TherewasaverygoodturnoutofPCAracecarswithalargeCanadiancontingentandlotsofothertransportersfrommoststateseastoftheRockyMountains. WhenwegotthereGenewasjustgettingreadytogooutforhis2ndsprintrace.DuetohisstickytiresandthebumpsthatSebringisknownfor,hehadalreadytornuponegearboxinhisBoxsterinpractice.Hisracegroupwentoutandwewatchedthepacelapsandthefirstracelapthen,noGene.NoBlueLightningBoxster.Another gearbox. We left about the time thatGene’s tracksidesupport,PeterDawe,gotthecarbackinthepaddockandstartedputtinginanothergearbox.OnSundayGenerantheenduroandthatgearboxmanagedtoholdtogether.Genewasrewardedwith2ndplace,agoodstarttohis2017clubracecampaign.

Joyce and I continued our tour and had a wonderful time inMiamiandtheKeys.WespentafewdaysinKeyWestexploringDuval Street andwatching beautiful tropical sunsets. We tooktheAutotrainfromFloridabacktoLortonVirgina,aninterestingexperience. LarryLeeFormer CNY member

ApparentlymyplottoslowuptheeditorsoIcouldavoidwritingthiscolumndidnotwork….heishealinganyway.Ishouldhaveknownthatyoucouldn’thiredecent‘enforcers’inIthaca.IshouldhavetriedUtica.

Skip’sproddingmademethinkupaninterestingsolutiontotheneedforsomecopyandsomethingIwantedtodoanyway.InveryrecentdevelopmentsouthereinIdahoIfoundoutChobaniiscancellingthebigprojectthattheywerekeepingmeherefor,soIamoutofhereattheendofMarch.AlthoughIlikeIdahoIamreallyreadytospendsomemoretimeathomeandwithmyvariouscarbuddies.Inotherwords–youwillseeabunchmoreofmethisyear.

LastweekendandthisweekendarethelastthatIwillbeheresoIdecidedtomakethebestuseofthattimeanddoacoupleofroadtripsinthe911Cab.FirstweekendtripwastoMoabtovisitArchesandCanyonlandsNationalParksandtodriveuptheColoradocanyonswiththetopdown.TheSecondwasatripthroughthemountainsinIdaho.WiththeneedforanarticleinRedlineIfiguredIwouldmixthetwotogetherandtakepicsthoughthePorschewindshieldasItraveled…allPorscheshouldcomewithviewslikethese!

LastNovemberIattendedtheFallZone1PresidentsMeetingasneitherChrisWhite,PresidentCNY,norBillKohnke,VPCNY,wereabletoattend.AtthatmeetingAaronAmbrosino,NationalTreasurer,suggestedtothegroupofZone1PresidentsanewtrainingagendabedevisedforAdvancedDrivingSchoolstudentswhohavetheinterestandaptitudetofurthertheirhighperformancedrivingcareerbybecominginstructors.ItwasdecidedthattheZone1ChiefInstructorswouldattendtheSpring2017Presidentsmeetingandbreakouttoaseparateroomtodiscusstheconceptanddecideontheviabilityandlogisticsofsuchaplan.

Time for another membership survey?

Ihavenodoubtthatmanyofushavebeenasked“So,howmanyPorschesdoyouown?”whenmeetingpeopleforthefirsttime.My hunch is that to the general public, Porsche ownership

implies thatwemustbefilthyrich. Peoplealso think thatmostofusmusthavemorethanonePorsche.IstillrememberwhenagroupofyoungmeninapickupdrovebyourZoneOneConcourssite inNiagara Falls and shouted “you rich (expletive) Porsche(expletive)”.ThatmemorystillirritatesbecauseIfancymyselfacarenthusiastandnotawealthysnob.

Although I have never seen statistics on incomes of Porscheowners,extrapolatingfromthepricesofnewPorschesitseemsthatPorscheasaprofit-makingenterpriseistargetingbuyerswithhighincomes.Atfirst,Ithoughtthatthisgroupwouldbethoseatthetopfivepercent.Wikipediadefinesthisgroupashavingincomesabove$166,200fortwowageearnersinahousehold.However,after the federalgovernmentand thestate takes itscutas taxes,notmuchislefttoalloweventhiswell-to-dogrouptopurchaseanewPorsche.Therefore,peoplewhobuynewPorschesmustbeinahigherincomebracket.Perhapsthisgroupmustearn$250,000ormore. Interestingly, there are pockets of wealth that do notconform to national norms. For example, to be in the top fivepercentinSanFranciscothefigureis$350,000.ThisiswhytherearesomanyPorschesintheBayArea.FolkswiththatincomecanindeedaffordanewPorschetogowiththeirRangeRoverurbanassaultvehicles.

But for the rest of usmeremortals,we can enter the hallowedhalls of Porsche ownership by acquiring used examples of themarque.Thelowerendofthepricerange--good944s,914sandPlainJane(isthisasexistremark?)Boxstersarestillaffordabletothoseofuswithmodestincomes.Unfortunately,usedair-cooledPorsche prices have gone ga-ga recently to the point that eventhe oft-maligned 911s of the 1975-1977 period now commandstratosphericprices.Forgetlookingat356s,longnose911s,911S,930,RSAmericas,oreventhe964s.Andsadly,inasmuchasIwouldliketohaveaGT3RSoraCaymanGT4,thesecarsarewayoutofmyleague.

When Ibecamepresidentofour club in2000 Idida surveyofthemembershipabouthowmanyPorschestheyhaveowned,stillowned,andotherpertinent informationthatwouldhelpusgetasenseofourclubasagroup.Iwouldliketosharewithyouwhatthatsurveytakenseventeenyearsagolookedlike. “Out of amembership base of approximately 240members, 41members returned their questionnaires. However, membershipincludesspouseswhichmean that thereare120householdsandtherefore41responsesistheequivalentofa34percentreturnandisconsideredoutstandingresultsforasurveyofthisnature.Andeventhoughwecannotclaimthattheresultsarerepresentativeofourmembership,itdoesgivemeideasaboutwhatseemsimportantinourregion.Foronething,Iwassurprisedtofindthatmanyofour“active”members(definedas thosewhoattendoneormoreeventsayear)ignoredthequestionnaire,whilemanywhomIhavenevermet(buthopetosomedaysoon)respondedenthusiastically.

What this means is that our region still has the potential to get morememberstobecomeinvolvedinouractivities. Ifthe41responsesaresomewhatrepresentative,weareagroupofrealautomotiveenthusiasts.Notonlyhavethe41householdscollectivelyowned127Porscheautomobilesovertheyears,whichaverages out to about three cars each, there aremanywho stillownthreeormorePorsches.Thebreakdownofmodelsownedbythe 41 include nineteen 356s, forty-one 911s and their variants,twenty-two944sandtheirvariants,twenty-eight914s(foursandsixes),seven912s,five928s,andfiveBoxsters.Admittedly,the911cameoutaclearwinner,butmanyofuswerebroughtintothefoldbythe914andthe944. Perhaps,Porscheshouldlookintoonceagain responding to this sectorof itsmarketof loyal fans.Marketingonlyupscalesportscarsandsportsutilityvehiclesmaymarktheendofyoungerenthusiastswhoarerelegatedtotheusedcarmarket.AbareboneslightandnimblePorsche,withPorschecomponents,thatcostsaround$30,000willbeadefinitewinner.IameventemptedtobuythenewMR2andrebadgeitas914Rfor914resurrected.

Ofthegroupwhoresponded,justabovehalfownedtwotothreecars, andabout a thirdown four tofivevehicles. Of this, 67%haveonePorsche,19%ownstwoPorsches,and8%ownsfiveormorePorsches!Thesurveyalsoshowsthatwearenotadversetothesportscarsofothermarques. Othernon-Porschesportscarsowned were British (36%),American muscle car (23%), otherGerman (16%), Japanese (15%), and Italian (8%). TherewasalsotheoddVolvoamongthegroup.

Andasexpected,theclubisdominatedbybabyboomers,definedbythosewhobegandrivinginthe1960s(46%)whichalsocoincidedwiththeboominthemodernsportscarmarket.Thenextlargestgroupofmembersisthosewhobegandrivinginthe1950s(22%),followed by the 1970s crowd (19%). The most distinguishedgroupofourmembershipbegantheirdrivingcareersinthe1940s(8%).Iwouldliketobeabletosaythatourfuturelieswithouryouthfulmembers,butthosewhobegandrivinginthe1980sonlyconstituted5%oftherespondents.ThisprofileisquitealarmingbecauseI,forone,wouldnotwanttobepartofaclubthatattractsonlythosewhoarematureinageandaffluentinmeans.Porscheisalivingcompanystillproducingcars.Let’shopethatourclubwillnotturnintosomethingakintothePackardOwnersAssociation,whereboththecarsanditsmembershipwillsoonbecomeextinct.As a reminder, we should do our best to encourage youngermemberstojoinandbecomeactivemembers.”

Iwonderifthingshavechangedregardingthecarswenowownand whether there are now younger members (my lament in acolumnseveralmonthsago).WhatmayhavechangedisperhapstheadditionofnewercarssuchastheCayman,Cayenne,thebabyCayenne,andthePanamera.Perhapsitistimetoconductanothersurvey.Thistime,weshouldincludeasurveyoffamilyincomes,aswell.ItmightbeusefulalsotoaskPorscheofSyracuseaboutitsmarketingstrategytodeterminewhichincomegroupittargets.

My good neighbor and esteemed editor of theRedline Report alwaysremindsmethatwearenot“lowermiddleclass”buttopfivepercenters.HewantsmetofeelashamedthatasaliberalInolongerampartoftheunwashedmasseswithwhomIempathize.

AllofyouwhohavereadmyrecentcolumnsknowthatIrecentlyboughtaSilveradotoreplacemyagingSuburban.YoualsoknowthatIhavenotbeenhappywiththattruck.Moreimportantly,youshouldknowthatIboughtthatautomobile,notbecausemyhouseholdincomeis$250,000ayearasSkipinsinuates,butbecauseIwasmerelyfollowingtheleadofanotherCNYmember—mygoodfriendSteveTurco.Formanyyears,IwouldbuywhateverStevebought.WhenSteveboughtaTahoetotrailerhis1989SpeedstertotheColoradoSteamboatSpringsParadein1998,IpromptlysoldmyFordExplorertofollowhisleadandpurchasedaTahoetotrailerSiu-ling’spristine944totheParade.Stevewonfirstprize,andSiu-ling’scarcameinsecondintheConcoursd’elegance.

AfterStevesoldhisTahoe,Ialsofollowedsuit.HeboughtanotherChevySUVandIboughtaChevySuburban.Twoyearsago,SteveboughtaSilveradoandlikealoyalfollowerIalsoboughtone.NowthatSkiphasalertedmeabouttheincomelevelsofSilveradoownersitmustbetruethatSteveandConnieareprobablyamongthetoptwopercenters.IknowthatIamnotamongthatrarifiedgroupandblamemySilveradoownershiponSteveTurco.

Foranyofthoserecallingmylastdiatribe,the’95993CabrioTipisstillinstoragebecauseit’sstillwinterhereinCNYandmostofourPorschesarestillhibernatingandwillbeuntil

atleastthesalthasbeenwashedfromtheroadsbyAprilShowers.Hopefully,myPorscheisdryingout,althoughinterimtestshavenotbeenpromising–IdonotyetknowiftherereallyISTiptronicdamage,orifitismerelyaproblemofashortsomewhereintheTipcontrolbox,whichisunfortunatelyunderthepassengerseatandsowassubjectedtoNoah’sproblemwhentherainsofOctobercamethroughanunrealizedseparationbetweenthefabricroofandtheplasticrearwindow.Forthreedayscontinuous.Andhadnoplace to go once it got there except the lowest point inside theinterioritcouldgetto.Guesswherethatmightbe.Whatamess.And given the small gaps on circuit boards, I expect dendriticshortingoftheTipcontroller.

Butthatwascombinedwiththeknowntransmissionproblemsthatoccurredayearagoonmy’97Audi“S”8.Thatisnotamisprintfor those knowledgeable among you dear readers – Audi didnot import to theUSAtheactualS8untilmodelyear2001,butthe original owner ofmy ’97A8 paid an added $12K atop theoriginal $69K to haveHoppenMotorsport source all the “EuroS8” suspension, induction, exhaust and brake parts and installthem right after he receivedhisoriginalPearlWhitewithDeepNavyBlue leather and loadedwithEVERYoption ’97A8. HesoldittomeinNovember2001whenhisactual2001,orderedtheWEEKbefore9/11,arrived tohim inMassachusetts.He letmehaveitforwhatthedealerwouldallowhimintradewhenhehadgottenNOotherresponsesonCars.comtohisadfora“97AudiA8–Modified”–smallwonderwiththatadforthatclassofcar,suggestiveofflamesorwheeliebars.ILOVEDthatcar,andithadplentyof lapsatWatkinsGlen, itself,surprising lotsof944andotherinstructorsasahuge4-doorsedanbearingdownonthemwithmewavingforthemto“gitoutmuway”.Onesweetride,whichwasmy“winterrat”sincethen,untilthetrannyproblem.ExceptwhenitcametoNYSI,butmoreonthatalittlelaterherein.

Sadly, economics being such a cruel bitch has forcedme to beunable to justify theseemingminimum$3Ktoswapoutausedtranny,or$7Ktorebuildtheoriginal.ButIhavealsonotfoundabuyerfor it,either. Probablyfor thesamereason. But ifyouwishmeto,Iwillregaleyouwiththeloadofknow-nothingtrollson Craigslist who hide behind anonymous keyboards and heapepithetsliketheclownwhoinsisteditwas“justanoldA6”anddidnotevenKNOWthattheA8isanaluminumspaceframe,theverythingwhichallowstheaforementionedperformanceontrackandstreet,andkeepsthecarphysicallyinalmostoriginalappearancecondition, because aluminum does not rust. And besides thefabulousBOSEstereoandpracticallyhotandcoldrunningwomenon the options list, like the ski sack which pops from the rear seat back to allow skis to be put in the trunk and keep them fromdripping into the interior, and the solar sunroofwhichkeepsairflowinginsunsotheinteriorstayscoolonthehottestdaysdespitebeinganalmostblackleather,etc.AlongwiththeACsystemwithwhichyoucouldhangmeat.But,asusual,Idigress.

Soanyway…DuringmymovetoOswegoCountyinlate2013I had a ’95RangeRover “Country”LWB. A tank,withwhichto invadeonceIovercamethestupidLucasElectrics“PrinceofDarkness”designproblemsthatcausedittofailtostartatanythingbelow32F,andBritmobileassemblyissues, like thekinkedfueltank vent line that caused splash-back every time the tankwasfilled. Thoseperceptive amongyouwill observemypatternofpurchasingmodelyear’95vehicles,thelastyearbeforeOBD-IIsoastoavoidtheneedlesscostsassociatedwithbelievingthatthecomputerinavehicleequalsitsactualtailpipeemissions.Icouldregaleyouwithexamplesthatcouldcurlyour toes,butIwon’t.Thisissueanyways.

However,inkeepingwiththatpattern,whenthe“StrangeRover”decidedtohaveaseriousinternalengineissueWHILEIwasinthemiddleofmoving,Iwentlookingforsomethingsimilarlycapableofpullingmycartrailer,withwhichIwasdoingmymovefrommythenhouseinLiverpooltowhereIwouldresidefrommy34’MotorhomenearCentralSquareonthenon-workingfarmIsetupasanRVParkasperlastissue.

Youarelikelywonderingwhatanyofthishastodowith“Rambler”oreven“Porsche”andIwillrequestyourpatientindulgencefora bit yet. At that time, November 2013, I found a ’95 ChevyTahoe,whichwillbecomeTahoe1later,butIamaheadofmyself.However,whatbecame“Tahoe2”isanalmostidenticalSECOND’95ChevyTahoewiththesamecolor,options,details,etc,except40K less on the clock, andwas eventually purchased inMarch2016whentheAuditranshadafitonI-81returningfromanopenmic session,which led to its being removed from the road andnecessitatinganothermeanstodealwithTugHillPlateauwinters,whichwerestillineffectatthetime.Asthingshappened…

As things happened, I have a friendwho needed a vehicle justas Iwas trying to sellTahoe1By loaningTahoe1 tomy friend,whohasagarageinPhoenixwhereIcanstorethe993,wehaveasynergisticsolutiontoatleastpartofmyproblems–i.e.,protectingthe993fromfurtherdamage.Tahoe2hasproventobesurprisinglycapable.Like anyvehiclewith150Kon the clock, some thingsneedwork–butithasACandprettymucheverythinghasbeenmade to work sufficient for my needs. And my new vocation(uncompensated, of course) of entertainer for charitable mealsandthelikeinSouthernOswegoCounty,isservingmypurposeswell.Whichremindsmeofthediscussionspreviouslyaboutnon-Porschesandtheirappropriatenessformentioninthe“Redline.”AndIamheretoexpresstheopinionthatIamnolessofaPorschemanjustbecauseIdonotcurrentlyhaveaPorschewithwhichtotravel to thosevenues. And tobeaRamblerabout theways inwhichweALLcametobereadingthisandotheritemspublishedherein(thosewhoknowmewellunderstandthatdouble-entendresarehigharttome,andyouhavejustbeendouble-entendredwithTHAT comment for real. And to assure thosewho care (thosewhodon’tcanhardlycomplainunlessTHEIRarticlessomehowgotdisplacedbythisinSkip’slargesse,willseethatIhavemanyscars,butmyspiritisinthemendingphase.Babysteps.

Oh,andonthesubjectofNYSI,andespeciallyaboutOBD-II,Isuggestyou readersdigabitdeeper intowhat andwhy that allexists.Ifyouhaveanyautomotiveawareness,youdoubtlesshaveheardoftheVWDieselemissions“workaround,”whichessentially

lookedatthefactthatarunningcarwasstationary,soadjustedfuelandoperatingparameterstoenablethevehicletoeasilypassspecsfortheTESTINGtomeetEPArequirements,thelegalbasisforinflictingOBD-IIonallusownersofvehicles.Manyhavehadthe“Murphyeffect”ofhavingourcarslightthedreaded“CheckEngineLight(CEL)”justbeforeourNYSIwasdueandwounduppayingforourlocalservicecenterpersonneltovacationinArubaorwhateveronlytolearnthatthefailurewasNEVERtoactuallypassemissions,butinsteadtosatisfythecomputeratAlbanythatinsistsitmusttalktoyourcarbeforeyourcarcanpassNYSI…unlessitisa’95orolder.Anybodystillnotseethemethodtomymadness?

The Porsche 356SL . . . the WHAT ???

Comeon.Waitaminute!SLsareBenzes,right?Youknow:likeGullwings.What’saPorschedoingwiththatSL-suffix?

I’dspeculatethatquiteafewPorschedevoteesaren’tacquaintedwith the356SLormaybewithout realizing it.Oh, they’d lookatphotosof the’51LeMans24-Hoursfinishandrecognize thePorscheinthatrace—therewasonlyone.Butthefactthatitwasknownasa356SLisgenerallyoverlooked.

Sowhat’sthestorybehindtheserare(only11built)littlecars–Porsche’sfirstdedicatedrace/competitioncars? ForthatwemustreturntotheyearsimmediatelyfollowingWorldWarII,whentheerstwhiledesign-exclusivePorschefirmlaidplanstobecomeacar-builder,andtoreturntoStuttgartfromitswartimerefugeinAustria.UtilizingtunedVolkswagenenginesandothercomponents,thecompanyproducedamid-engineroadster(356/1)in 1948, and a small series of aluminum-bodied coupes (356/2,latercalledtheGmündCoupes)initsmakeshiftAustrianquarters.Butobvioustoallwasthatinthatisolated,bucolicsettingitwouldneveramounttomorethanacottageindustry.

By1950thecompanyhadmadeitsreturntoStuttgart,andbeganassemblingsteel-bodiedcarsinarentedcorneroftheReutterplantintheZuffenhausensuburbofStuttgart,waitingfortheUSArmytovacateitsownadjacentfacilities.Slowlybutsurely,Porschewasmorphing into a proper automobile manufacturer, with increasing use of modern production methods, its precarious financesaugmentedbypatentroyaltypaymentsfromVolkswagen.

Discussionsraisedquestionsastohowbesttoproclaimthefirm’sexistence and to promote it to the public as a builder of smallsporting vehicles of high quality, performance, and reliability.An answer developed at the 1950 Paris Auto Show, where aconversationbetweenPorscheandrepresentativesoftheLeMans24-Hoursledtoaninvitation:enterateamofcarsinthe195124-Hours!

Althoughchancesforasuper-prestigiousoverallwinwereslimtonone,amplebenefitcouldbegleanedfromagoodshowinginasmall-displacementcategory,itwasreasoned.Porscheseizedtheopportunity.Aconventionaladvertisingcampaignwouldstrainthefirm’scoffers,butthewavesemanatingfromasuccessfulleapintobig-timeracing’spondcouldbepriceless!

What cars, then, should be entered? The time and funding todesign,engineerandconstructdedicatedracecarswasnotthere,andevenhaditbeen,orderbooksatKarrosseriesuchasWendlerinReutlingenwerealreadyfull.

Thepossibilitiesofenteringabraceofsteel-bodiedcoupestheninproductionwereweighed,buttheyweredeemedtooheavygiventhehorsepower limitationsof the1086ccengines thatwouldbefittedtocontestthe1100ccclasswin.Wastheplanstillbornafterall?

“Moment,bitte,HerrDirektor!”avoice,perhapsofbody-designerErwinKomendaorengineerKarlRabe,mayhaveexclaimed.“WehaveheremanyleftoverchassisfromourGmündcars.Thosealloycoupesarenotonlylighter,butmorestreamlined.Thoseare thecarstoenteratLeMans!”

SoelevennewalloybodiesofKomenda’s356/2designwerecraftedbyTatrainitsViennaworks.FerryPorsche’ssisterandbusinessassociate,Louise,arrangedtheirtransporttoGermany,wheretheyweremarriedtotheproperchassis.Theresultwaselevenausterecoupes with louvered metal panels replacing quarter-windows,wheel-wells shrouded, flame-thrower driving lights, deck-lidssecuredbyleatherstraps.Dubbed“356SL”–Sport-Leicht(light),theylookedslippery,andtheywere.

Plush,burnishedbeautieslikethePorschesdisplayedinshowroomstoday?Getreal!

Notwowereexactlyalike.Theyborethesigns(somemightsayscars) of hand-fashioning –whatwe often euphemistically dub“artisanal”today:inconsistentplacementofrunninglights,unevenpanelgaps, thincoatsofdullsilveronbodiespounded toshapeover bucks from thin-gauge aluminum. Rough-hewn, lean andmean,theywereweaponsofracetrackwarfare,alreadylockedinupontheirtargets.

Representing the firstGerman entry since beforeWorldWar II,a trio of the carswere driven to the French venue for pre-racepractice.Butprospectsforsuccessseemedtoshrinkwhenoneofthethreewasdemolishedinacrashandanothersustainedcripplingdamagejustpriortothestart.Rattledshakenhopesrestedwiththesolesurvivor:chassisnumber2-063, racenumber46,drivenbyFrenchmenAugusteVeuilletandEdmondMouche.

Notunexpectedly,theoverall1951winwenttoahuskyC-TypeJaguar. But to the surprise of many and delight of some, theVeuillet-Mouche car finished first in the 1100cc class, coveringnearly1,800milesatanaveragespeedof73.5mph.Despite24hoursofhigh-rpmdrivingwithintervalsofheavybraking,thetinycoupenevermissedabeat.OntheMulsanneStraightittoppedoutatjustover100mph.

AnothersuccessfollowedinthenotoriouslygruelingLiège-Rome-LiègeRally,withchassisnumber2-055capturingaclasswininthehandsofPaulvonGuilléaumeandEckartvonderMühle,whilefinishinganastoundingthirdoverall.Itispossiblethat2-055wasthe secondof the twoLeMans cars that sustaineddamage, butwhichbeenrepairedintimefortherally.ForL-R-Litranwithanexperimental1500ccengineof70hp.

InAugustitwasonceagain2-055’sturntoshine,asthecarwasbroughttothebanked-ovalMontlhérycircuitnearParisforattemptsat speed/endurance records for cars of 1500cc displacement.Another356SLfittedwithan1100-ccenginewasalsopresenttocompeteinthatcategory.Attheendof72hoursontrackwithonlybriefservicestops,2-055hadset11newworldrecordsforcarsofitsclass,while its1100ccrunningmateset three. Stillsmearedandbug-dotted,2-055was rushed to theParisAutoShowtobeproudlydisplayedonthePorschestand.

In threewidelycontrasting,high-profile internationalevents thedoughty littlebattle-wagonshadproventheirmettle.Theread-out:Porschewasnolittleboulevardiers’sissy-car!

OneassumesthatfeatsofthisstaturewouldhavemotivatedPorschetoenshrinethemandperhapssomeoftheir“colleagues”permanentlyinamuseum,orsimilarplaceofhonor.

Butrace-carconstructorsofthattimewerecoldlyunsentimentalaboutpreservingevensuchfaithfulsteeds,so,consideredasmere“usedracecars”the356SLswereunceremoniouslysoldofftoagentsaroundEuropeandtheUnitedStates,whopassedthemtoprivateowners.Both2-055and2-063wereexportedtotheUnitedStatesinlate1951,andeachwasracedsuccessfully(2-063minusitsroof,loppedoffto“addlightness”)byaseriesofownersintheyearsfollowing.In1971Porsche356aficionado/expertVicSkirmantspurchased2-055,andafterrepairingbumpsandbruisessustainedinitsactivelife,soldittotheCollierCollectionofNaples,Florida,inwhosecustodyitremains.Itstoplessmate2-063wasracedevenlonger,butmostrecentlyhasundergoneapainstaking,historicallycorrectrestorationbytheRodEmoryfirmforaprivateowner–ataskthatincludedresearching,fashioningandinstallinganewrooftoreplacetheoneamputatedearlier.AtPebbleBeach2016the1951356SL/2-063wasrunner-upforBestinShow.

Other356SLshavesurvivedaswell,withalow-roofversiondisplayedatthePorscheMuseuminZuffenhausen,idiosyncraticallyre-christened2-055andwearing2-063’sLeMansracenumber.

Themanysuccessesbytheseandother356SLsprovedtobepublicitygoldforPorsche,whounlikeFerrarihavealwaysracedtosellroadcars,ratherthanthereverse.Theywerefollowedbythe550“Spyders,”andbythemid-‘50sagenerationofexoticfour-camengineswerepoweringPorsche’scompetitionforces.Racingsuccessesagainstfaster,morepowerfulopponentssoonearnedPorschethetitleof“giant-killers.”

But itwas the356SLs,road-cum-racecarssired in the leanestof times thatplantedtheseedsof thePorscheRacingLegend–andprovideditsfirstblossoms.

Ihaveaproblem.IthoughtIwasbecominga“Hoarder.”Ihavewaytoomanypartstoexplainotherwise.SometimesIstartaprojectatthebeginningofwinterjustbecauseIcan.IamboredalreadyanddaytimeTVhasnothingformesinceIretired.

Inmysmall,one-baygarage,severalmotorshavebeenrebuiltandatleast4carshavehadvariousupdatesdone.AlsointhecellarisacollectionofpartsthatIhavepurchased,bartered,beengivenandacquiredinallmannersofwaysforPorsche914s.

In2012Iacquiredatubfromafield(yep,nexttoabarn)thathadsomerepairsstarted,butthefloorswereprettybadlyrustedout.Onthebrightsiderepairpanelswereincluded.ThatwinterItriedmyhandatwelding.IalsohadasetofsteelflaresIhadtradedatransmissionfor.Nodoorswiththecar,butIhad2extrasetsandabetterhood,too…somewhere.Ohcrap,thefrontfloorwascutouttoputalonggoneACunitinthere.Thereartrunkwasprettygone,too.Thegoodpartwasthatthetraditional“HellHole”andlongitudinalwerealreadyfixed,amightaskewbutserviceable,Ithought.

IbuiltarotisseriefromsomeHarborFreightpartsandstartedtocutandweld.Ihadjusthadmyfootoperatedonandwassupposedtosit,notleavingthehouse,Doctor’sorders.Icandothat,Ithought,justsitonastoolnexttotherotisserieandcommencetocutandweld.Asasidenote,nexttimeIwillcoverthebandagesasmyfootdoctorwasabitmiffedwhenIshowedupwithweldingslagburnsonhisbandages.

Ihavebeencollectingpartsforalmost20yearsandIcameupwitha5-bolt,911frontendanda5-boltreartrailingarmassembly.ThakhadgivenmeasetofKonisportshocksandJackVassinadonatedasetofcoilsalongwithasetofHoosiersfromSteveVassina’strackcar..Perfect.Inandontheywentalongwith4or5setsofFuchsthatIthoughtshouldbeinthebackshed.Theywere.

DuringthelastcoupleofyearsIhavebeengoingthroughabunchofboxes,Dumpingouttotesandsearchingthroughalotofdrawerstolocateallthebitsneededtogetadrivablecarfortheautocrossevents.IREALLYwishIhadabetterinventorysystemthana5-gallonbucketandmyrecollectionofwhatIkept.Thewiringwasreallybadandthesteeringcolumnjunk.Ihadallofthesethingsandacompleteinteriortoboot.Includingaserviceablegaugeconsolewithaclock.WhatreallypushedtheprojectaheadwasIhadtradeda2.2Lenginethathadissuesforothertrans/MotorworkIhaddoneforafellow914owner.The2.2mostlyneededfreshheadsandaset

ofbearings.Ihadasetof2.4headsfromaMotorMeisterengineIburnedthebearingsoutof(anothertaleofwoe)ANDIhadasetofWebersandanalternatorsittingaround.Inbackofeverythingdeepinthecellar,Ievenfoundawindshieldfrom15yearsago.Idon’twanttobetheonethathastoclearmycellaroutafterI’mgone.

Fall 2016:IhavenochoicebuttofindeverythingIknowIhaveinonespotandstartmyFrankensteinproject.Itshouldn’tbethatmuchwork.Wrong.Ittakes20timeslongertoputanythingbacktogetherthanitdidtotakeitapart,onceyoufindthatsmallbitthatisindispensablefirst.

March 2017:Idrovethecartodayanditrunsverywell.Setthealignmentandcalledtheinsurancecompanytoaddthecar.Notbad.Allthewayto70MPH,BUTCOLDat25degrees.Ihaveafewtrimbitstofind.Theyaresomewhere,maybeunderthecrawlspace.Warmweatherhastogetherefirst.

Iclaimthedesignationof914-14/6forFrank.Heisa914with(bymybestcountpartsof14othercars…maybemore)anda2.2literconversiontoboot.Iwasabletosourceeverythingbutaproperoiltankfrommystashinthecellar.
