From the Desk of The Redline Report’s Southeast Asia CorrespondentIvisitedaPorscheshowroomlocatedinanelegantshoppingmallcalledTheParagon. Iattachaphotoof thenewCaymanandahybridCayenne.Next to the showroomare others belonging toMaserati,McLaren,BMW,RollsRoyce.TheCayenneandBMWX6wereabout8millionbaht.TheCaymanwas7millionbaht.At32bahttotheUS$youcouldfigurethepriceforyourself.ThedailywageofaThailaboreris300baht.

IfIeat lunchinshopsalongthestreetIwouldspendabout100baht.Buttoday,ItreatedfamilyandfriendtoaChinesemealatafivestarrestaurant.Fortheeightofusthebillcameto10,860Baht, a price that is out of reach for the average laborer. I amashamed to say that Thailand is third in the world for the gapbetweentherichandthepoor.

The Tempus does Fugit

ManydecadesagoIwaswalkinginsideTheArlington,aclassicrevivalstylemansionbuiltshortlyafterthecloseoftheCivilWarandlocatedjustoutsideofRichmond,

Kentucky.AtthetimeitservedasEasternKentuckyUniversity’sfaculty-alumniclub,functioningasagenteel,countryestatewhereEKU faculty could bring their families, friends and guests formealsandafterwardsretiretoeithertheelegant,outsidegroundsortotheupperfloorsoftheArlingtonforbilliards,readingorsimplyto socialize. I never attended theArlington asmuch as Imighthave liked, despite the reasonably pricedmeals and its invitingrooms,but it remains inmy thoughts, especially the imageofalarge,grandfatherclockthatstoodinoneofthecentralhallways.The clock wasn’t anything unusual, other than old and large,but then as onewho prefersTimex toRolex,what do I know?WhatimpressedmemostwastheLatinphrase tempus fugit that appeared on its face. “Time flies.” It spoke tome then, as onebarelyinhisthirties,anditspeakstomenowwhenthephrasehasbeenpersonallyexperienced.Icouldpicturetheoriginalowners,probably notmuch older than Iwas at the time, andwonderedwhat theymight think had they been suddenly transported intothethenfuturetime,futureforthem,distantpastforme.Wouldthey be pleased by the gift of their estate to Eastern KentuckyUniversityand,moreimportantly,wouldtheybepleasedbywhatEasternKentuckyUniversityhaddonewiththeirhome?Iwantedtobelievethattheywouldhave.

I also think similarly about the original founders of theCentralNewYorkRegion. 60 years ago did they ever realize that bothPorscheandtheclubwouldgrowandbesuccessfulfordecades?ChuckGladleandBillNoroskihavewrittenaboutsomeofthesefolks,but therearesomanyothersaboutwhomweknowlittle.WhenIwasputtingtogetherthe50thanniversaryeditionbackin2007, I came across a photo of the original founders (or so thephotowaslabeled),butmanyoftheindividualsinthephotowerelongforgottenwithonlytheword“Unknown”lefttomarktheirplaceinourhistory.Thisyearwhileconvalescingfromabrokenleg,BillKohnkeloanedmesomeofthehistoricalrecordsoftheclub.HethoughtIhadnothingbettertodo…andhewascorrect.AsIlookedoverouroriginalapplicationtobecomeaPCAregionIspottedthenameofsomeoneIknewamongtheoriginalmembers,ChaunceyNortonofIthaca.Mr.Nortontaught5thgradewhenIwasatWestHillElementarySchool,longenoughagotosuspectthatmastodonshadtobeshooedfromtheplaygroundsatrecessandCampbellSoupprobablysoldavegetabledrinkcalled“Inline6.”Icouldbewrong.Anyway,alookatthephotoofthefounders,the one appearing on the cover of the Summer 2017 “Redline”andoneofthe“Unknowns”quicklybecame“Mr.Norton.”Havingbeeninthe“other”5thgradeatthetimeand,thus,unsureofmymemory,IsharedthephotowithawomanwhowasinMr.Norton’sclassbackintheday.Shehadnodoubt.Thatyoungmanholdingan infant daughter on the coverwas none other thanChaunceyNorton, himself. Attempts to gather more information weren’tassuccessful.Oh,I foundmanyfolkswhohadMr.Nortonasateacherandrememberedhimasstrict,yetfairandwithaflairforfashion,butnoonekneworsuspectedheownedaPorsche.Allthey remembered wasMs. Kanally’s turquoise blue with white

(aka “India Ivory”) ’54 Chevy. The world didn’t deserve Mr.Norton,butwedid!WhatwouldMr.NortonhavethoughtaboutPorschelifein2017,60yearsinthefuture?

Tempus fugit,indeed.I’vebeenaneditorofTheRedlineReportforsevenyearswitha4-yearhiatusbetweenmyfirst,five-yeartermandmyfinal,two-yearengagement.It’sbeenalotofhardwork,somestressandalwaysaconcernthatatsomepointtherewouldbenothingavailabletopublish.Somehow,though,youwritersandpurveyorsofphotographscamethroughandwesucceeded.IttookalotofcajolingonJoyceGladle’sparttoconvincemetobecometheeditorbackinlate2006and,again,byChrisWhitebackinlate2015toreturn,butI’mgladbothJoyceandChristalkedmeintoit.It’sbeenalotoffun.Thebiggestthanksgotothoseofyouwhocontributedonaregularbasis:ThakChaloemtiarana,BobGraham,DickJeffers,ChuckGladleandJoe“Whathappenedtotherestofmyarticle”Holzer,aswellas toJoyceGladle,ChrisWhiteandBillKohnke,whowrotesooftenandsowellwhentheyservedasCNYPresident.AllofyousetthetonefortheCNYandyousetitwell.Ifthere’sanycredit,youdeservethelion’sshare.

Now it’s time forme to stepaside,onceagain, togiveothersachancetotakeCNYintoitsseventhdecade.Perhapsit’stimeforamoreactiveinternetpresenceorareturntoahardcopyformat.Thefutureissointerestingandwillbeheresoon.Tempus fugit.

Wow, September is half over and Skip is putting hisnewsletter to bed tomorrow. A President’s report isneeded.AtfirstI’mthinkingthatwedidn’tdoallthat

muchthisyear,butthen,yes,wedid!Somehighlights:

January:WehadaplanningmeetingattheDrydenHotelandwereabletogetsomegreatideasgoing.

April29:TheHathawayHousewasourhomefortheannualCharityAuction once again planned by Jeannette and JimRockdshil tobenefit theHopeHouse.Wedidraiseover$1500for them.TheCharityCommitteeisaskingforsuggestionsofacharitytoworkforthenexttwoyears.

May:DetailJohnniesinSyracuseforadetailingtechsession.Coldanddampbutwehadanexcellentturnout.

Still in May: Porsche of Syracuse hosted ourAnnual CobwebConcours. Over 30 cars were on display and People’s Choiceawardsweregivenout.

For Opening Day at the Glen wemet at the Dryden Hotel forbreakfast and, after being joinedbyour friendsof theSyracuseCorvetteClub,weproceededtotheWatkinsGlentrackwithmorethan50carsforsomepacelapsandaninformal“meet”later.

AnAutocrosswasheld at theCorningCommunityCollege andanotheronewasheldattheCherryValleykartcircuitwithmorethantwiceasmanyentrants(21).ThankstoMikeDarminioandGilWistrup.

I will say that the highlight of this year’s events for me wastravelingtotheAlanRosenblumprivatecollectionafteratouroftheUticaBrewery.Wewereabletoreallygetupandclosetoanamazinglylargeprivatecollection.AfterwardswasaBar-B-Que

featuringPrimeRib.ThankstoMarkSchultzforgettingthewholeeventarranged.Unfortunatelythenumbersattendingwaslimitedto125people,butthatwasareallystrongturnout.

QuiteafewofourmembersattendedtheOctoberfestandtheEuroCars shows.Thanks toDick Jeffers, RichErtinger and allwhoweretheretogreetCNYmembers.

Vintageweekend inWatkins Glenwas a couple of weeks ago.Friday’shappeningwasdowntownandthenSaturdayandSundayLin&EdHurdandChris&CathyWhitesetupahospitalitytenttrackside,justpasttheInnerLoop. Coming upwill be our chance tomark the 60th anniversary ofCNYPorscheClub,slatedforOct13-14-15inPennYan,travelingthroughouttheareaall3days.ThankstoDougSchrankforgettingeverythingset-up.

November18:WewillbeholdingourannualClubMeetingattheHathawayHouseinMcGrawagain.Mikehasasignupnoticealsointhisnewsletter.

Hi fellowCNYPCAmembers! As usual I can’t seem to just relaxwhen I should!After finishing up the long project in Idaho Ienvisionedtakingsometimeoffandrelaxing,enjoyingthelifeononeoftheFingerLakesandputteringwithsomePorsches.Butthatwasnottobethecase.

Someonedecidedthatitwouldbeagoodideatobuilda‘CountryClubforcars’about10minutesfrommyhouse.Iwenttovisittheowner/developertoseeifthiswasforrealandtoseeiftheCNYPCAmightbeabletouseit…2hourslaterIwashiredasthechiefinstructorandtrackmanager!

ForthelasttwomonthsIhavebeenhelpingwiththeconstructionofthetrackandplanninghowitwilloperate.

2017 Central New York PCA Elections Are Approaching Quickly

Itisthattimeagainthatweasaclubneedtoconsiderwhowewouldliketobeourclub’sleadersforthenexttwoyears.Accordingtothecurrentby-lawsanominatingcommitteeistobeassembledandconsidertheslateofofficersbetweenJulyandSeptember1.

AnymembermaynominatethemselforanothermemberforconsiderationbyinformingtheCNYSecretary,BarbaraConley,([email protected])oftheirchoices,preferablybyJuly.

Section1 - Nominating Committee TheNominating Committee shall consist of themost recent available Past Presidents in reverse order of their presidencywhosemembership is ingood standingwith theClub.TheChairpersonof the committee shall be the ImmediatePastPresident or if notavailable,themostcurrentPastPresident.Thecommitteeshallconsistof5persons,theChairperson,theMemberatLargefromtheBoardofDirectors,andthethreemostrecentavailablePastPresidents.TheNominatingCommitteeshallconveneduringthefourthmonthpriortotheannualmeetingofanyelectionyearandbythefirstdayofthesecondmonthpriortotheannualmeetingofsuchyear,theNominatingCommitteeChairpersonshallsubmittotheSecretaryoftheClubtheslateofcandidatesnominatedtostandforelectionasofficialsoftheClub.TheNominatingCommitteeshallnominateatleastoneMemberasacandidateforeachoftheelectiveofficesoftheClub.TheNominatingCommitteemaynotnominateanothermemberoftheNominatingCommitteewithoutsuchMemberrecusingthemselvesfromtheCommitteefor thereviewprocessof thatMemberfornomination. GeneRaymondiandBlueLightningRacingwereatNewJerseyMotorSportPark fromAug17 toAug20 to runaDE and the SchattenbaumShowdown PCA club race

ontheThunderboltcircuit. GenewasrunninghisE-Stock2004Boxster and was the only CNY racer here this year. We havehadprettygoodluckhereinthepastmanagingtowinourclassacoupletimes.

Thursdaythe17thwasaDEwhichGeneusuallyrunsjusttogetsetupinthepaddockandgetalittleextratracktime.Thiswentprettywell.ThecarwasrunninggoodandGenequicklygotthecaruptospeed.Hislaptimesweregoodbutweresecondsslowerthanpreviousyears.

OvernightThursdaytherewasamajordownpour,whichleftthetrackabigmessFridaymorning.Whenthefirstgroupwentoutontracktherewasstandingwateronthebackstraightandintheoctopusturn. Turn1hadsomewaterontheinsideandsandallacrosstheturn.ThefirstgroupsoutonFridayhadseveralspinssomeresultingincontactwiththeguardrailsoGeneskippedhisfirstpracticesession.Yournotgoingtogofastwiththeseconditionssothereisnopointinputtingthecaratrisk.Thesecondpracticesessionfoundthetrackinmuchbetterconditionbuttherewasstillsomestandingwateronthebackstraight.Genegotuptospeedquicklyandendedup2ndfastest,about2secondsoffhisbesteverlap time. Due to trackconditionseveryonewas runninga littleslowerthisyearthanpreviousyears.

In the Saturday morning sprint race, Gene survived the startandwas runningwell inposition foragood2ndplacewhenhestartedhearingrattlingsoundsfromsomewhereunderthecar.NotwantingtohurtthecartoomuchGenedecidedtogiveuphisgoodpositionandsavethecarsohepulledin2lapsearly.TheDaweMotorsports crewwhowere doing his trackside support for theweekendquicklydeterminedthattheleftrearwheelbearinghadfailed.Whentheygotitoutthefailurewasveryapparent.Severaloftheballbearingsweremissingandoneballstillinthebearinghadsplit inhalf. Theyhadanewbearing installed inplentyoftimeforthe2ndsprintracethatafternoon. InPCAclubracing,yourfastlapfromoneracesetsyourstartingpositionforthenextrace.BeforehisretirementfromthefirstraceGenehadputinalapgoodenoughtoplacehim2ndinclassonthegridforthe2ndrace.Thisracewashisbestoftheweekend.RunningonasetofbrandnewHoosiertiresGenegotagreatstart,managedtoavoidcontactinturn1andcomingoutofturn2heldtheclassleadforabout300yardsbeforebeingforcedtogivewaytoasilver911.Twoturnslaterthethirdplacered911wentflyingpastGeneunderbrakingforturn4andalmosttooktheleadunderbraking for turn 5. Gene closely followed the red car until theexit of theOctopuswhenMr. red 911missed a shift andGeneswervedaroundhimandbackinto2ndplacerightonthetailofthesilver911.NowtheBlueLightningBoxsterwasthemeatina911sandwich.Therestoftheracewasattackthecarinfrontanddefendfromthecarbehind.Thegapsbetweenthethreecarsstretchedandclosedfromlaptolap,turntoturn.AboutmidracecomingaroundthelongrighthanderbeforetheoctopusturnGenewasinthemiddleofatrainofcarsandthinkingaboutmakinga

moveontheclassleadingsilver911socloseinfrontofhim.HepulledoutalittletolookatpossiblymakingapasswhensuddenlytherewasaBoxstersittinginthemiddleofthetrackpointingthewrongway!Aquickswervetotherightandhewassafelypastthespinner.Yeow!Thatwasclose!The3leaderswererunningsoclosetogetherthananysmallmistakewouldinstantlymeanalostposition.Astheycrossedthefinishline,thefirstthreecarsinclasswerecoveredbyabout2secondswithGenein2ndplace.Whew!Whatarace.

TheSundaymorningsprintracewasabigletdown.Genewasthe2ndfastestqualifier inclassandwasrightbehindtheclasspolesitter.Genedidn’tgetthegreatstartheneededandinchaoticrundownto turn1gotasmallbumpfromoneof thosepeskySpecBoxsters.Whatnerve!TheothercarsufferedworseandGenegotawaywithonlyasmallwhitepaintmarkonhissideandadriverssidemirrorpointingthewrongway.Unfortunately,inthescrum,thecarGeneneededtobeclosetogotawayandseveralothercarsslippedinbetween.Nowitwasgoingtobejustaboutimpossibletocatchtheclassleader.TrafficsorteditselfoutandGenestartedrunninghisraceholding2ndplacebutnotclosingontheleader.ThisracewasgoingOKuntilhesuddenlycalledinontheradiothathisbrakeswerefading.ThisissomethingthatisusuallynotaproblemforaBoxster. Thebrakefadegotworse,carsstartedpassinghimandGenedecideditwasn’tworththeriskandpulledintothepitsandoutoftherace.

Again theDaweguys found a badwheel bearing. This time itwastherightfront.Thebadwheelbearingwaslettingthebrakerotor wobble a bit which was pushing back the caliper pistonsresultinginalongbrakepedalthatfeltlikebrakefade.Theyhadthebadbearing swappedout inplentyof time for theonehourlongafternoonenduro.Inspiteofdroppingoutofthelastsprintrace,Genewasagaingriddedprettywellduetoagoodlaptime.The enduro started without incident and after a few laps Genefoundhimselfstuckintraffic.Hewasinalittleknotoffastercarswithmorepowerandbetterbrakesbuthewasoutdrivingthem.Theywereholdinghimupbuthejustdidn’thaveenoughtogetby.Meanwhile,theclassleaderwasslowlypullingaway.Afterabout30minutesGenecalledinontheradiocomplainingaboutbrake fade again. The race crewdecided thatwhenwedid themandatory5-minutepitstop,theDaweguyswouldbleedhisfrontbrakes.Imaginethat,bleedingsmokinghotbrakesinpitlanewiththewheelsstillon.Andyou’veonlygot5minutestodoit.Justaswewereabouttocallhimin,thedoubleyellowflagscameout.Thepitswereclosed. Scheiss! When thegreenflagcameout,Genedidonefastlapthenduckedrightintothepits.TheplanwasjusttobleedthefrontbrakesbuttheDawecrewwassofastthattheyhadtimetobleedall4brakecalipersinthe5minutes.

The5-minutestopwasupandGenerejoinedjustafterthe2ndinclasscarwentby.ThebrakebleedseemedtodothetrickasGenereportedthatthebrakeswereworkingwellnow.The2ndhalfoftheracewasverydifferentthanthefirsthalf.Genewasclearoftraffic andwasmuchmore aggressive passing cars quickly andwithauthority.Getoutofmyway,I’mcomingthrough.Hejustdidn’thaveenoughspeed toclose thegap to2ndplace. In thelast5minutesGenecalledinthatthebrakeswerefadingagainsowetoldhimnottotakeanyrisks,justbringithome.Hesloweddownabitandmanagedtomakeittothefinishwithadecent,ifunsatisfying,3rdinclass.

Iattended the2017EurocarShowinCazenoviaonFather’sDay thisyear. While there,anelderlygentleman,nicelydressedanddistinguishedlookingwaslurkingaroundHEIDI,lookingitover,inthewindows,bodyfromdifferentangles…

Finally,hecameovertome,tappedmeontheshoulderandasked,“Isthisyourcar?Ihadagoodfriendthatownedacarlikethis.IworkedwithhimatIBMforyears.DidyoueverhearofafellownamedRutbell?”

Ireplied“Yes”andthenitbegan.Storiesaboundedfromhimandme,too.Weexchangedstories.Whatatreattotalktothisgentleman.NowIhaveabetterideaofwhyClarencewassoooorespectedatIBM.

Anyway,thisgentlemansaidthatheandClarenceandtheirfamilies,DorothyandMarjoryandall,wentcoastingtogether.Didyoueverhearthatexpression“coasting”?Ineverdideither.Nowgetthis,intheearlydays(probablybeforeClarenceboughthisPorsche)ClarencewasveryinterestedinthetopographyofthelandaroundtheSouthernTierofN.Y.STATE. Hehadacollectionof large,detailedmapsofthearea.Hestudiedthemandwouldhikeoutandabouttoconfirmwhathefoundonthemaps.

Hefoundanold,desertedrailwaythatranbetweenOxfordandAlbany.Muchofthesteelrailsremainedintact.NOTE:ThishadtobebeforeWWII.Therailswerelaterscrappedandusedforthewareffort.Afavoritepasttimeofthisgroupwas,literally,to“ridethoserails.”Theywouldglidedownthe(gentle)downwardslopes.Oh,Ihavesomuchmoretotellyou,butthis“coasting”wasapparentlygoodfamilyfuninthosedays.

Veryinteresting.LeaveittoClarence.NOTE:Together,theybuiltthepartsneededfortheirunmotorizedtraincartinthemachineshopsatIBM.Soundlikefunandalittledangerous,too?Yeah,lotsofmemorieswererefreshedthatday.

Things Change, Life Goes On

The past fewmonths have seen huge changes forme andsomeofthemaffectyou.Tobeginwith,SkiptellsmethiswillbehislastissueaseditoroftheRedlineReport.Iam

sadtoreportthiswillalsobemylasteditionof“AlternativeLine”asaregularcontributiontothatnewsletterforCNYPCA.Ithasbeenafuntimewritingforeditorswhoseemedtowishmyefforts,butitistimetomoveon.

Withany luck,youshouldnoticeelsewhere the lyrics toasongIwrote on the second day aftermy granddaughterwas born tomy only child, Jessica, and her husband, Tom. Jess could notpossibly have made me prouder, having become a PhD andteachingprofessorofEthics,andhavinginearlyAugustprovidedme a grandchild to spoil rotten, but also to teach how to enjoylifebecause it is sofleeting, anddoing the things that celebratelife,likedrivingPorsches,somethingforwhichthereissimplynosubstitute.

ThelyricswillmentionafewsadthingsIthinkabout–thefactthatautomationmaysoonmake thosewithactualdriving talentnotmerelyredundant,butevenperhapsverboten,asautonomousvehicleswhichtalktooneanothermayeventuallymakeitunsafeforthevastmajorityof“occupants”ofthosevehiclestoallowanyvehicle,nomatterhowwelldrivenbyahuman,toinhabitthosesameroads. The issuewillbeexplainedby liability,but that isamisnomer–itwillbetheincompatibilityofactualintelligencealongside artificial intelligence once insurance companiesdeterminetherelativerisks to theirprofitsfrom“criminals”likemewhowillbedoingwhatgooddrivershaveALWAYSdone–DRIVINGinsteadofalltheotherattentiongrabbingtechnologiesbeingcrammedintovehiclestoday. Itwon’thappeninthenextfiveyears–thetechnologyhasfartoomanyrealworldissuestoaddressforwhichtechnologyandthemindofsoftwareengineersisnotsufficienttoconjuresolutions–liketherangeofweatherinCNY,forexample.ButbeforemygranddaughterAinsleybecomesadriveryoumaysafelypresumeitwillbethenorm.

You have already observed other inevitables – like the utterdemise of physically printedmedia like this newsletter. Whichwillactuallytakeusclosertothatnotyetpossible“Beammeup,Scotty”momentwhereALMOSTeverythingEXCEPTYOUcanbesentelectronicallytoanywhereelseitneedstobeatessentiallythespeedoflight.YouandI,aswellasmygranddaughter,willstillhavetotraveltheoldfashionedway,althoughIsuspectwewillfindwaystomakeairtravelalotfasteragainwithoutdestroyingeardrums, the environment, humans themselves, or our wallets.Butifyouhavenotyetseenanyothercultures,Iadviseyouplantodosoassoonaspossible,becausetechnologyisrapidlydestroyingwhatusedtobeuniqueaboutthem,notleastofwhichwastheirlanguage.Asonewhohastraveledagoodportionoftheplanet,Icanassureyouitisaseducationalasanyclassroomyouwillevervisit.

Andspeakingofwhich;thereisalreadyevidencethatthefactorofscalemaymaketheconceptofacollegeeducationonaphysicalcampusobsolete,iffornootherreasonthanthecost.Thosehigher

education leaderswhohavebeen experimentinghave seen theycan produce graduates with identical learning who have neverset foot near their campus for less than a tenth the current costtoget thaton-campusdegree. Whatwillbemissingwillbe thebeerblastsandfraternization. Butthosewerealreadydinosaurswaitingonanasteroid–youonlyneedwatchANYteenagegirlat lunch – theywould rather text a friend right alongside themthanactually talkwithher. But that isalsonotwithout itsownunintendedconsequences–somegood,somenotyetdetermined.

Alreadyhavingsomeimpactwhosenetresultsareunpredictable,atbest,wasasurprise,especiallytome.Hadanyonesuggestedtome that a technologywould be so powerful as to reduce thefrequencyofteenagesexIwouldhavetoldthemtheywerecrazy–MomnNaturespentbillionsofyearsmakingusdesperatetoputoneandonetogethertomaketwo(ormore),butthatispreciselyoneoutcomeofthelackofdirectinteractionnotedintheparagraphabove.

I am not so sanguine about one other seeming outcome of thattechnology – the dumbing down of writing skills, as spell andgrammarcheckersautomaticallyrewriteeventhemostham-fistedincompetencewiththeEnglishlanguage.InmycaseithasbeenSkipwhohasmadeupformostlymytypinginabilities.Butyou,dearreader,getthepoint.AndasusualIdigress.

The idea that youmight tune you own vehicle tomaximize itsperformance will become even more remote than OBD-II hasalreadymadeit–bothforemissionsconcernsandforgovernmentalcontrol. WhichmightexplaintoyouwhyALLmyvehiclesare’95orolder. But thatmust inevitablybeaffectedbythelawofdiminishing returns – eventually even those will be destroyedby the environment. Whether they are doing the sameTO theenvironment is open to argument, since at least theVWDieselscandalhasprovedthatnobodyREALLYknowswhatthetailpipesareputtingout–andNYSIONLYtalks to thecomputer,whichcanstillpassevenifpartsoftheengineareflyingoutthetailpipe,seemingly. YoudearreadershavedoubtlessheardofGMOtechnologies.Theywillbebothaboon,because theworldpopulation isexpandingevenasarablelandisbeingconsumedfasterandfastertofitthepopulation,andabanebecausemuchofthatpopulationwantstoshare in thewealth and conveniencewe in “thewest” have fortoo long seen as our birthright. Something has to give. Andoneoutcomewillbetheinabilitytoobtainadequatefoodyieldswithout“aiding” thenaturalevolutionbyapplyingwhatsciencewilldiscoverispossiblethroughgenemanipulationwhoserandomalternativesmight have taken centuries. And one catch of thatmodelwillbethemonoculturalecosystemstheywillproduce,iftheyhave not alreadybecomeunsupportable by their cost fromhaving corporate ownership of seed lots. One thing nature hasdemonstratedrepeatedly is itsability to throwacurveballat thebestthinkingofscientists’perceptionsofwhatthey“know.”

Atthesametime,wisesages, likeNeilDeGrasseTyson,shouldbeheededwhenheobservesthat“theworldismadeofProtons,Neutrons andElectrons, butmostlyMorons,” towhich I addedtheexplanatory“ProtonshaveaPositiveCharge,NeutronshaveNoCharge,ElectronshaveaNegativeCharge,butMoronsareIN

Charge.”Thatshouldgiveusallpause.Atthesametime,though,oneofthereasonswePorscheClubfaithfulhavebeenwillingtoplunkdownourlonggreenhasbeentheperception,notalwaysborneout,thathighercostpaidforbetterengineeringwillreturngreatervalueinthelongrun. Oneneedonlyconsider theexperiencewiththe996seriesIMSbearingandtheearlier2.7LcasehalvesofmagnesiumtorecognizethatmistakescanALSObewellengineeredintoexpensivejunk.

Thatsaid,however,itisALSOwelldemonstratedthatevolutionarydevelopment,insteadofstylisticmodification,hasbeenthegeneralhistoryatPorsche,whichiswhytherewillbefewwhowouldargueagainsttheideathatthe’95Porsche993,whichpre-datedtheOBD-IIrestofthe993seriesmadethroughmodelyears’96-’98,islikelythepenultimateexampleofanair-cooled911-seriesvehicle.ItisalsowelldemonstratedthatSOMEBODYseesenoughinherentvalue,eveninthe996,todevelopabettermousetrapfortheIMSbearing,justastheDilavarstudsandtime-sertsprolongedthe2.7Lsalvageability,evenasbetteralternativesweredevelopedbyPorschethatcouldactuallyboltrightin,suchastheMotronic3.2IusedtoreplaceMY2.7LwhenIluncheditatWatkinsGlen,makingmy’77Targaalmostbulletproof,butahandfultodrivewiththeaddedweightandhorsepowerhungoutbehindtherearwheels,whilekeepingthesamewidthtiresandwheelsasoriginal.Infact,Ihopeyouwillsee“MYCarHistory”elsewhereinthisissueaswell.Nosugar-coatingallowed.

Iamsurethereareahostofotherthingsmygranddaughterwillsee,anddo,whichIcannotevenperceivetoday,justasmyparentscouldneverhavedreamedofaninternetwhereeverybitofinformationevercreatedwasliterallyatmyfingertips,ifImerelyhadthewisdomtheknowtogolookingforitinsteadofbelievingeveryfakenewsarticlepostedbypeoplewithagendas,whichhashelpedtosopolarizetheelectorate.Sadly,Idon’tseethatimprovinganytimesoon.Especiallywithwhat“spindoctoring”pays.

Idon’twishtobeeitheralarmistordefeatist,butmerelyarealist.Mygranddaughterwillhaveaworldtodealwithwhichismorecomplexandshemustbewillingtoshareevenmoreoftheprivilegesshehadbestoweduponherwiththerestoftheworld.Butifshecannavigatethatworldandbecomealearnedandthinkingindividual,shecanalsobealeaderwhocanhelpsteerthatworldtoabetterplacethansheinherited.SoIamfullofcautioushope.AndI’llbetYOU,dearreaders,hopeformuchthesamefromYOURprogeny.Iwishyouall,andAinsley,too,theverybestofluckandhopeyouwillallgrabatthemantletoraiseithigh.Thanksforyourpatienceandtoleranceofmywitand“wisdom”(?!)forthepast90articles.It’sbeenfun.

PORSCHE’S “ITALIAN JOB”

ImaginetwopeoplevisitingthePorschegalleryofawell-knowncarmuseum.Theypausebesideatinysilverypresence,attractivebutalsoballisticinappearance.

“Hmmm!What’sTHISdoingherewithallthePorsches?”“Whaddaya mean? It’s obviously a Porsche. Says so on thehood.”“Noway,man!I’veseenlotsofGermancarsandlotsofItalianones.ThisisaFiat-Abarth,orsomethinglikethat!”

The doubter was wrong.And right, after a fashion. The objectoftheirdisagreementwasanexampleofarare,fascinatinghalf-breed:theAbarthCarrera,ortoreeloffitsfullcognomen,PorscheType 756T5 1600GSCarreraGTLAbarthCoupe -- Porsche’s“ItalianJob.”

The Abarth Carrera was a comet that blazed across the GranTurismoracingfirmamentintheearly‘60s,aninventiveinitiativethat extended the GT racing competitiveness of the aging 356,providing the small German company with breathing space topressaheadwithother,longer-rangeprojects.

By1959thewritinghadbeenonthewall:whilestillaforceinGT1600racing,the356Carrerahadgrownincreasinglyporkywitheachnewyearofproduction;besidestheprospectofyieldingtoits1600-ccrivals,on-trackembarrassmentthreatenedatthehandsof smaller-bore (1300-cc) Alfas, Abarths, and MGs. Porsche’sexecutiveknewthatanyremainingadvantagecouldbelostwiththeimminentdebutoftheeven-heavier356B.

With competition success considered vital to marketing health,Porschesearchedforanswers,andfoundoneintheFIARegulationsfortheGT1600Class.Interestingly,therulesallowedaconstructortomodifyaproductioncarbyreplacingtheexistingbodywithalighterone–onemadeofalight-alloy,forexample--aslongasthecompletedcarweighedatleast780kilograms(1,712pounds).

Decidinguponaweight-lossregimenandsearchingoutsourcesoflightweight body-building,Porsche turned to longtime associateKarl(Carlo)Abarth,anAustrianemigréwhohadsetupshopinTurin,Italyasatuner-constructor-aftermarketsupplier,forgingadeal inwhichAbarthwouldarrange to construct20 lightweightcoupebodies, and tomount theseupon356BCarreraplatformssentfromStuttgart.

In response,AbarthcommissionedFrancoScaglione, lateof theBertone styling house, to design the body. It emerged from hispen an Italian take on the familiarKomenda-designed coupe --sleek and compact, even sensuous,with somefive inchesparedoffheight, length, andwidth.Evenonpaper it looked fast! TotransformpaperintometalAbarthfollowedbyretainingthesmallcarrozzeriaofRoccoMotto.Induecourse,workinglargelywithhand tools, craftsmen in the small shop completed a prototypebodyasrequiredbythecontract.DesignatedasNumber1001,thebodywasjoinedtoarollingchassisandwasdriventoGermanytobeinspectedbycriticaleyes.

ItwasherethatthePorsche-Abarthcollaborationencountereditsfirst speed-bump.While pleased by the streamlined good looksaswellastheabout-100-poundweight-lossandtheaerodynamicgainofa16%frontalareareduction, technicalheadsatPorschewere appalled by the panel gaps, the difficulty of entry-egress,the tight bodywork that constrained steering lock, the crampeddrivingposition,and–mostserious–thetendencyoftheenginetooverheat.Theflawsrevealedthedownsideofhand-workdidnotalwaysratetheeuphemism“artisanal”,andstoodinsharprelieftothehighstandardsoftheReutterfirm,towhosebodyworkPorschepersonnelwereaccustomed.RelationsbetweenthePorschefactoryanditsItaliancontractorbecamestrained.

Gradually,mostoftheproblemsweremitigated.Theoverheatingwas cured by punching a multitude of louvers into the enginecompartment lid, fender cut-outswere enlarged, andwith othersteps1001wasreadiedforcompetitionalongwithitssiblingsthatfollowedastheywerecompletedinItaly.ThenewcarwasgiventheTypeNumber756,anddesignatedtheAbarthCarreraGTL(theLforleicht,orlight).Afew,includingthisinitialcarwereretainedaspartofthefactoryraceteam,whiletheremainderwereofferedforsaletoprivateentrantsatabout$6,000percopy.

Finallyreadyfor1960’sprime-time,theGTLquicklyshoweditsmettle,annexingclasswinsintheTargaFlorioandtheNürburgring1000Kilometers.Neverexpectedtovieforoverallwinsagainstheavy metal like three-liter Ferraris, or even to challenge the

lighter,fasterRS-60s,aGTLnotchedafinetenthoverall,firstinGT1600atLeMans,savingPorschefromembarrassmentafteritsSpydersswooned.AgainstthisbackgroundGTLscontinuedwithvictoriesinnumerousothereventsthroughouttheseason.

UnfortunatelyfordriversHerbertLingeandHans-JoachimWalteratLeMans,theirclass-winning1001demonstratedthebuilders’slipshodeffortsatweather-sealing.Rainwaterpouredinbythebucket;thefloor(ironically,toowellsealed!)soonhadseveralinchesofwatersloshingabout,andthedriverswereforcedtositinmiseryinpuddlesonthedriver’sseatthroughouttheirstints.Ontheplus-side,Lingereportedreaching138mphontheMulsanneStraight,andwascertainthatthecarhadevenmoretogive.

Thispatternwasvirtuallyrepeatedin1961;among1962highlightstheGTLsfinishedfirstthroughfourthinclassatthe‘Ring1000Km,andsweptGT1600honorsatSebring.Laterthatyear,BobHolbertwasfirstoverallintheBridgehampton400Km.event.

Greatsuccesses,ofcourse,buttheGTL’stimeinthesun(sotospeak)wasbrief.Theproductionrunendedat20.Duringthistime Porsche’s development programwas intense as thefirmconcentrated its energies on a two-year foray intoFormulaOne, and alsointroducedthe160-hpCarrera2;shortlythereafterthemid-engine,fiberglass-bodied904appearedonthescene.Furtherintothedecadeanavalancheof900soccurredastheGermancarmakerconsciouslysoughtthehighestrungonthesportscarracingladder,reachingthoseheightswiththemighty917s.Supersededbutnotdiscarded,the18survivingGTLstookhighlyprizedplacesinmuseumsandprivatecollections,makingoccasionalappearancesinvintageracingevents.

Itwouldbe shortsighted towrite-off theAbarthCarrera as amereplace-holder inPorsche’s competitionhistory.TheLittle (Italo-German)CarThatCouldmorethanrepaiditsinvestment,oftenoutlastingfasteradversaries,andfurtherbuttressedPorsche’sprizedreputationasbuilderofgiant-killers.

Afewglitchesaside,the“ItalianJob”hadturnedoutwell.

OurdearEditorEmeritus[“Emeritus” from the Latin “E”- meaning “without,” “meritus” meaning “merit” Ed.], SkipTestut,hasfrequentlyrequestedarticlesaboutourpersonalautomotivehistories.ButsinceI’dalwayshadotherthingstowriteIneverputthistopaper(orelectrons,sotospeak),butheregoes:

Myfamilyhada1960Fordstationwagon–Notthefakewood-sided“CountrySquire,”whichPorschehasdecidedtoemulatewiththeir2018PanameraEstateCar,thebestlookingPanameraIhaveeverseen.IsuspectMikeDarminioisalsodrooling.TheygotitwhenIwas10(dothemath).WhenIwas13myGrandfatherpassed,andIreceivedhis1950Ford.Likethewagon,ithadthreeonthecolumnandpowerNOTHINGelse.Ithadbadbrakesandwasdeemednotworthfixingbymyparents.Itallowedmetolearntodriveandshift,andthrowoutananchortostopitjustbeforeIreachedtheroadinourdriveway,whereIcouldJUSTreachthirdgear.Agreatcartolearnon.ButIgottomylicenselate–the’60Fordwasreplacedbya’68CountrySedan–olivedrabmetallicwithsimilargear,powernothing,butaFARtoosmallsteeringwheeldesignedtoexpectpowersteering.Andabitchtolearntodriveandpassmylicensetestin.Ithinktheyfeltsorryforme.

Whenin’69IwentofftoClarkson(Yep,Irepeated9thgrade.Iwasboredanddidn’twanttolearnFrench).DuringmysophomoreyearmyUncleDandied.Hehadbeenapoliosurvivorwhohadadaptedwelltohisbraces,andlearnedtodriveaBMWIsetta,andboughttwo.Theywereperfectforhisneeds,becausethefrontopenedtoallowhimtositonthefloorboards,pullhimselfintotheseat,andclosethefronttobehindthewheelofanadaptedhand-controlvehicle.Ihadhoped,andevenlobbiedfortheIsettas,buttonoavail.Myaunt,whocaredlittleforcarsandneverdrove,allowedthemtobecomeferalcatboxesbecauseshealsocouldnotpartwiththem.Sad.Iwouldhavecherishedthem.

EnteringmyjunioryearIwaseatinglunchwithmyDadwhenhisfriendoverheardustalkingandsaidhehada’63ChevyBelAirwagonwithabadtrannythatIcouldhaveifItookitfromhisproperty.Wehookedupastraptodragit,aftermyDadtriedfirsttodriveithomewithinevitablepartsboundingacrosstheroadenroute.Turnedouttobesimplerthanthought,though,asonlythefrontyokeonthedriveshaftwasbroken–thetrannywasfine.Buthisfriendsaidthecarwasmine,anyway,evenafterknowingitwasacompletecarformerely$10andinstallation.That’showImetmyfuturewife,andfinishedmylasttwoyearsatClarksonandfirstfewyearsofgraduateschools.Whenitrefusedtoshiftup,andgaswasgettingridiculousinthe’73GasCrisis,Iboughtanew’74ToyotaCorollaSR5,theONLYyeartheymadeitreallyspecial,withfenderflares,widertires,andahigherratiorearend.Itactuallywasfasteracceleratingthanitslesser4-speedbrethrenineachgear.Atrue“poorman’sPorsche,”andIlovedit.Sadly,Iwounduphavingtoweldabedframetothebottomtokeepitfromfoldingupfromrustwhenyouopenedthedoors,andeventuallyDROVEittothejunkyardwhentheelectricsbecameunreliablebecauseofthepoorgroundingofrust.Imissthatcar,funkyfendersandall.

Wealsohada’66Chevellewagonthat towedapop-upcamperallover, includinguptoNovaScotia,andwithwhichwebothgotourmaster’sdegreesnightsandweekendsbycampingintheclosedProvincialParkatCharlestonLakeinsouthernOntario.Itwasreplacedwithanothernewcar–a’78Datsun810WagonthatIalsolovedbecauseithada5-speedmanual.Butitalsohadahiddenmanufacturingdefectwhicheventuallyruinedonecylinder,longafteritwasoutofwarranty.ItwastheonlycarIeverhadaradiostolen

from.IcommutedbacktomyhomeinLiverpoolonweekendsforalmostthefiveyears.IworkedtherewhilemythenwifeworkedinSyracuse–funnyhowlifemakesthingsworkout.I’dgotthejobaftermyMBAbecauseIwantedsomemanagerialresponsibilities,buttheWEEKbeforeweweretomoveup,shegotofferedarolemanagingthenewcommunityservicegroupfortheVNA.Thatsetmetoseeperiodsofseparationasnotthatbadonamarriage,andmycareereventuallyprogressedinthatdirectionforreal,wheninJune1986IhungoutmyIndependentConsultantshingle.

In1981,whileinOgdensburg,IwasintherightplacetofinallybuyaTarga.IhadwantedaTargasinceIfirstsawone.MyfriendsandItraveledtheMassPike,theytryingtourgemywagontogofasteraswe headed to BostonGardens for the ECACHockey FinalswhereClarksonwasasurprisefinalist.MyTarga,a’77911S,waspurchasedusedfromaguyinDaytonOHwhopickedusupat11PMonFridaythe13thofMarch.Inauspicious,Iassureyou.Yetitwasalsothebestautomotivebargainofmylife.Mydaughterstillhas thecar,andplans torestore it,with itsreplacement’88Motronic3.2LengineafterIlunchedthe2.7LatWGI.Shecamehomefromthehospitalherseconddayoflifein1982,ensconcedinthecarseatontherearshelfformedbyfoldingtherearseatbacksdown,givingapanoramicviewoutthefixedrearglassfromunderthatstainlessrollbar.Fardifferentfromallherfriends’experienceoflookingonlyupatskyabovetheirparentscars.That’swhereshelearnedtosay,“Dowowwies,Dad”whenhermomtriedtogetmetoslowdown.GuesswhoIobeyed?

Housing and child care and school costs pretty much limitedcarchoicesfor thenextfewyears, thoughI tried to injectsome“luxury”bybuyingusedLincolnTownCars–firstthe“pimple”–aredwithwhitevinyltopwhoseenginelunchedattheNewPaltzexit fromtheThruway-and thebronzedgoddesswhichburneditselftothegroundwhenafuellinerupturedintheenginebayonMorganRoadonecoldnightinLiverpool,aquartermilefromthehouse.Weshouldhavehadmarshmallows.Thefireburnedtheinsulationfromthestartercable,soitcrankedandcranked,therebypouringmoregasonthefireevenasIhadthekeyinmyhand.Butatleastithadservedasthe“coachcar”formanyinCNYtolearnautocrosstechnique–itcouldholdhalfadivision.

WithJessgrowingup,aminivanwasneeded,andaFordAerostarwithAWDwas chosen, againused. There is a pattern there aswell–Ihaveaphilosophicalissuewitheating25%depreciationasIdrivesomethingoff thelot. ButIwasonabadcontract inChicago,whereIhadstartedwiththeTarga,onlytofeelmylegsdyingandtheclutchburninginthattraffic,soIdecidedtoswapit for theAreostarwith its slushbox. Thankfully, Iwas rescuedfromthatcontractbyDuracells.Thatallowedme,in1999,whiletravelingwithmymotorhome,aKingsHighway, thatALMOSTmade it to the state line before lunching another transmission.Itwas replacedbymycurrent ’92HolidayRambler,whichhasbecomemypermanenthome,whichalsolunchedatranny,aswellasanengine,enroutetoVIR.Istillloveit,though.Iarrangedtomeetthesellerofthe’95993CabrioTiptronicIfoundonCars.combuthad tobuyfromadealer fordecentfinancing. Ineverunderstoodtheproblembankshavewiththeconceptofa911ashomeimprovement.ButIdigress.

Anyway,withneitherofushavingseen theplace,weagreed to

meet at an off-ramp atKnoxvilleTN formy inspection, then Iwould take thecar if itwasasdescribed,back toBrookvilleINwhereIwasworkingatthetime.WhenIfirstsawthecaritmadeafunnysoundwhenstarting,whichtheguydidnotunderstand,butsaiditseemedtohavenofurtherimpact.Itwasapairofinboardsuper-het radardetectorsworthoveragrand. Hesimilarly saidtheCDchangerdidn’twork–hehadthecartridgeinbackwards.Worked fine. And the Tip has taught me to be a better driverby learninghowitwants tobedriven,which isVERYdifferentfromthepriorPorschemantraofallbreakingbeforeturn-inthenpoweringthroughtotheexit.Sadlyitalsotaughtmethatfabricroofshaveleakageissues–youhavereadmytaleofwoewithitbefore.Itiscurrentlypatched–itlooksawful,butitworks.Babysteps.

AftermyfirstAudi,an’874000CSQuattrowitha2.3L5-cylinder,a tank in sheep’s clothing, I repeated with its bigger sister, an’87 5000 CS Quattro with the same engine, but turbocharged,andlovedthemboth.So,inNovember2001,Ifounda“’97A8Modified,”forwhichthesellerhadreceivedNOreplies,becausenobodywantsthatclassofcarmodified.ItturnedouthehadNOTputflamesdown the sidesnorwheeliebars,but instead tried tomake itmore like aEuroS8.HehadorderedanACTUALonefromAuditheweekbefore9/11.Sohesoldmethe’97forwhatthedealerwouldgivehimintrade,asteal.Whatasweetride–anditwouldstaywiththe993atWGI,afabulousfeatforabigsedan.Ilovedit,buthadtoseeitpartwhenthetrannylunchedandtherepairswouldcosttwicewhatthecarwasworth.IhadpreviouslyalsohadaStrangeRover,whichhad lunched itsengine,sowasreplacedbya’95ChevyTahoeLTinNov2013duringmymove.IwoundupreplacingtheAudiwiththatTahoe’stwinsisterwith40Klessonherclock,andstillhavebothtoday–theoldersibisswappingusagefor993garagespacewithmyfriendinPhoenix,whilethenewerturnedouttobefullyfunctionalincludingA/C.WhilehelpingmyfriendpushherHondawithrustedbrakerotors,Imanagedtobreakitsrearglass,andreplacingitwasanightmarish$75triptoajunkyardandsomescrapedknuckles,butitisbacktofullusabilityagain.

That’smycarstoryandI’mstickingtoit.AndnoRamblersnorAlfas,thankheavens.It’sbeenfun. RL

How Far Would You Drive Your 914? By Mark M. Jennings

Hello,fellowPorschephiles.WouldyoubelievemeifItoldyouIjustspent4daysinthecockpitofa1974Porsche914, covering 3200 miles of American and Canadian

highwaysandbyways?WellIjustcompletedthattrip,anditwasamazing.Icannowcrossthatoneoffmybucketlist.

My19-year-olddaughterwasmycopilot.Withacrashcourseonhowtodriveamanual transmission,especially thatoddshifting901gearbox,shewouldco-drivewhenmyeyesjustcouldn’ttakethejarringanylonger.

This 914was one ofmy dad’s Porsches, itwas hisDE car formanyyears.Actually,agoodpartofthemileageonthatcarisfromlappingWatkinsGlen,LimeRockandPocono.HewasalifelongPCAmember;CentralNYregion.Yes,thiswasMarvinJennings’car.Whenhepassedin2009,mymother(Mabel)wantedtokeepthatOlympicBlue914(wesoldhis‘89944S2in2010).

Whenwestartedout,thecarhad57,000andsomechangeontheodometer.Itrolledtoover60KjustaboutthetimewemadeittoKennewick,WA.Our journeybeganonAugust14th inDryden,NewYorkand tookus throughNewYork,ProvinceofOntario,Michigan,Wisconsin,Minnesota,NorthDakota,Montana,Idahoand,finally,Washington.

Severalweekspriortoflyingouttovisitmymotherandpickupthecar,thecreekthatflowsnexttothehouseinDrydenhadflooded.And asmurphywould have it, thefloodwaters flowed throughthegaragewherethe914wasparked.Mabelhadtoldmethatthecarwas dry on the inside, thewater level just barely up to therims.Thewaterlevelwasactuallymidrockerpanelandfilledthefloorboardofthat914throughtheemergencybrakeandtheheaterboxcables.WhenIopenedupthecartheweekendbeforeourtrip,therewasa½inchofstandingwateronthedriver’sside.Itwasnotaprettysight.Wespenttwodayspullingtheinterior,scrubbingandmoppinganddryingthecarout.Luckily,therewasnodamageorbadsmells,justsogginess.

SoIchangedtheoil, installedanewsetofoilcoolerhoses,putsomeairinthetires,madesurethebrakesweresolidandoffwewent.OurfirststopwasMarathon,NY,whereMarvinisburied.Mydaughterhadnevervisitedhergrandfather’sgrave.Thereare4generationsofJennings’inthatcemetery.Next,westoppedinNewark, NY, somy daughter could see whereMabel’s parentswereburied.ThenoffdownNY31 throughRochesterandontoNiagaraFalls.Ourplanwas tocut throughCanadaand re-entertheUSatSaultSte.Marie.Wemadeitabout100milesnorthofTorontoonthatfirstday.WespentthenightinBarrie,Ontario.

Theseconddayout,wemissedaturnsomeplaceandendedupin the 1000 lakes area of Ontario, about an hour east of where we shouldhavebeen.ThankstoDr.GoogleandMickeyD’sfreeWi-Fi,we reorientedourselvesandmade it toSaultSte.Marieandreentered theUS.Onceback in theUS, insteadof stopping forthenight,wedecidedtopressontoMinneapolisMN,wheremyyoungersonlives.Wemadeittohisresidenceat4:00amthenext

morning.Yes,mydaughterand I spent24hours straight in that914.AndInowcantellyoufromexperience,914seatsbecomequite uncomfortable after 8 hours, at 16hours your looking foranyexcuse,shortofsuicide,toendthepain.At24hours,you’reparalyzed, there isno feeling fromyourhips toyour toesand Iguaranteeyouwillneedtherapytolearntowalkagain.Wespentthenext2daysrecoveringatmysons. Onthe18th,wewerebackontheroadandheadedforFargo,NorthDakota.TheplanwastodriveUSRoute2fromFargoallthewaytoSpokane.IfyouhaveneverdrivenUS2throughtheheartlandyouaremissingoneofAmerica’sgreattreasures.Itmaybeflat,but it’s certainlynotugly.Wefinishedup thatday inBainville,MT.Onthe19thwedroveforabout14hoursandfinishedupourtrip inKennewickWA.This tookus throughGlacierNational’sLewisandClackPass,LoloPassand4thofJulyPassintoCoeurd’Alene.WerolledintoKennewickWAatmidnight.

The car run super the entire trip.And evenwith 0 to 60 timessomewhere north of 12 seconds (sometimes it felt like days)that 1.8-liter fuel injected (original fuel injection)VWpoweredPorschekeptupwithmoderntrafficrunningat70to80MPH.Weaveragedbetterthan30milestothegallon.Thecarneverusedadropofoil.

Theonlymishap:whenwepulledintoPasco,theexhaustranloudand thecarwasbackfiring.Wehad lost4outof6headerboltssomeplace between Spokane and the Tri-Cities and had a 1/4”gapon thedriver’s sideexhaustflange.Thatwasfixed thenextmorning.

43yearsago,PorscheandVWbuiltone tough littlecarand43yearslater,itproveditsworth.Allinall,anexcellentadventure!

Porsche Driving Experience at New Jersey Motorsport Park by Larry Lee

SincemovingtoLowerSlowerDelaware(LSD)lastyear,thingsarecertainlydifferentwhenitcomestoPorsches.Theroadsdownhereareverysmooth,straight,flatandboringasallgetout.Thecopsdownherepatrolallthetimeandsetupspeedtrapsinallkindsofcrazyplacesatallkindsofcrazytimes.TheyareALWAYSoutsomeplace.DefinitelynotPorschefriendly.Thereareno

independentPorscherepairshopsaroundheretospeakof.Recently,Iwasdoingsomebasicmaintenanceonmy944S2anddroppedabolt.Couldn’tfindit.Enginewon’tturn.Itappearedthatitmighthavegoneintotheengine.Indesperation,IhadthecarflatbeddedtoPorscheofDelawareinWilmington,100milesaway.Theyfoundtheboltquickly(notintheengine)andeverythingwasgoodagain.Whiletheyhadthecar,IhadthemrepairtheACsystemonmy27-yearoldcar.Theygavemea2017CaymanasanovernightloaneruntiltheygotmyACfixedandbacktogether.Noneedtohurryfixingthat. AboutamonthlaterPorscheofDelawareinvitedmetoaPorscheDrivingExperienceatNJMotorsportParkontheLightningcircuit.Igotinvitedtothemorningsessionandintheafternoontherewasanothergroupgoingthroughthesameexercises.Weweresplitupinto3groupsof16andwerotatedbetween3differentexerciseswithallnew2017PorschesfromthePorscheNorthEastMarketingfleet.TheinstructorswerefromthePorschedrivingschoolatBarberMotorsportParkinAlabama.TheywereallprofessionalracerswhoworkvariouseventsforPorschewhentheyaren’tracing.Oneinstructorintheautocrosshadwonhisclassatthisyear’sSebring12HoursandanotherracethatIcan’tremember.Theotherinstructorintheautocrosswasanopenwheelkindofguy.WonsomeIndyLightsraceslastyearandwassupposedtoberacinginIndycarsthisyearbutsomeoneboughthisrideoutfromunderhim.Hewasn’thappyaboutthatatall.TheguyrunningtheshowintheautocrosswasfromSouthAmericaandusedtoraceagainstJuanMontoya.BeathimyearsagoinaEuropeanformulasomethingseriesbeforeMontoyagotfamous.Hewascurrentlyracing911CupcarsinSouthAmerica.Alloftheotherinstructorswereofthiscaliber.Prettyinteresting. Myfirstexercisewasanautocrosswitha2017CaymanSanda2017911twinturbo.Thiswasaprettysimplelayoutintheparkinglotandweonlygot2lapsinonecarbeforehittingthepitsandswitchingtotheotherforanother2laps.Justenoughtoseethetrackandstarttoseewhatthecarcandobutnotenoughtogetyourselfintroubleorscuffupthetirestoomuch.Another3or5lapswitheachcarandIcouldhavereallystartedtowringsomethingoutofthem. Aftereveryoneinourgrouphadgonethroughbothcarsontheautocrossweswitchedtothenextexercise,driving4different2017PanamerasontheLightningcircuitbehindaMacanpacecar.Thepacecarwasdrivenbyoneoftheproracersandhehadaradiothatlethimtalktoall4Panamerasencouragingustostayclosebehindhim.Ifeveryonestayedclosehewentprettyquick,ifsomeonelaggedbehindhesloweddown.Therewere2“students”ineachPanamera.Wewouldgooutanddoonelapthenhitthepitsandquicklyswitchtothecarbehindusandswitchseats.Thedriverofthefirstcarbecamethepassengerinthe2ndcar.Thiswentonuntilwehadbeenthroughall4carsthenitwasgetbackinlineandwaitforournextpassthroughthe4cars.Thisexercisealsowasjustenoughtostarttoseewhatthecarswerecapableofbutnotenoughthatyouwouldhaveachancetodosomethingstupid.Stilloneguyinourgroupdidmanagethatwhenhejustdroveoffthetrackcomingoutofaslowcornerandendedupdrivingthroughthegrass.Noharm,nofoul. WhenourtimeinthePanameraswasdonewemovedtothelastexercise,whichwaswith2differentMacansand2different911salsoontheLightningtrack.Itwasveryinterestingseeingthedifferencebetweenthe911sandMacansandthedifferencebetweenthetwo911s.The911swereexcellentasyoumightexpectbutthesurprisewasthePanamera.Everyonewastalkingabouthowfast,smoothandstablethatbigcarwas.Weweren’tjustcruisingaroundeither.IhadtheABScomeonacoupletimesinoneofthePanameras.Myco-drivermanagedtogetover100MPHonashortstraightinanotherone.TheMacanwasalsosurprisinglyquickandfuntotossaround.It’sanSUV,it’snotsupposedtobethatway. AllofthecarswereequippedwithPDKtransmissions.Thiswasmy2ndtimedrivingaPDKcaranditwouldbeveryhardformetobuyanewPorschewithoutit.Youarealwaysintherightgear,theshiftsarealwaysperfectandmuchfasterthanyoucouldeverdo.Youjustfocusondrivingandletthecardotheshifting.PDKisMUCHbetterthananyotherautomatictransmissionIhaveeverdriven. Aftereveryonehadcompletedall3exercisestheyputtheproracerinstructorsinthePanamerasandtookgroupsof3outforsomehotlaps.Theywerenotsparingthecarsatall.LotsoftireshowlingandABSkickingin.Veryforcefuldriving.Theyweredoinglaunchcontrolstartseverytimeoutofthepits.Putyourfootonthebrakes,holdthegastothefloorthenreleasethebrakes.Maximumaccelerationwithminimumwheelspin.Lotsoffun. WefinishedupwithagroupphotoandlunchwithjustenoughtimeforabriefchatwithsomesalestypepeopleastheyhandedoutanicelittleSWAGbag.TwooftheparticipantsweresalespeoplefromPorscheofDelaware.Theysaidthattheygettodolotsofeventslikethisthroughouttheyear.Partoftheirsalestraining. Theeditorsofmagazineshavethepowertochangelives.ThebelowexchangewiththelateArtEastman,theneditorofVintage Motor Sportmagazine,resultedinseveraltripsbymetovintageraceeventsinEngland(SilverstoneandGoodwood).AtriptotheCoysHistoricFestivalatSilverstone,in1995,turnedmebackontoBritishcars.IrestoredaTriumphTR6andjoinedthelocal

MGCarClub.IsoenjoyedtouringagaininaroadsterthatIsubsequentlyaddedaPorscheBoxstertothegarageandjoinedthelocalPorscheClubofAmericaregion.IalsobelongedtotheGoodwoodRoadRacingClubforover10years.MywifeandIhaveenjoyedmanyhoursofcar-relatedactivitiesandfellowshipwithfriendswhowemetthroughtheclubs,allbecauseArttookthetimefromhisbusyscheduletoansweraletterfromastranger.

Dear Art,

I’vebeenmeaningtowriteyouforsometimetotellyouhowmuchIenjoyyourmagazine.FindingVintage Motorsportinmymailboxevokesthesamefeelingsofjoyandanticipation,whichaccompaniedthearrivalofthelatestissueofRoad & Trackduringthe1950sandearly‘60s.Thesportsandracingcarsofthateraalwayshaveheldaspecialexcitementforme.Thismaybebecausetheyarethecarsofmyadolescencebutisinlargepart,Ithink,duetotheirhavingbeendesignedmostlybyenthusiastsratherthanbymarketingresearchers,governmentbureaucratsandcomputers.

Readingyoureditorialpageovertheyears(Ialwaysreadthisfirst)Ihavecometoregardyouasakindredspirit.TheparallelsbetweenourlivesfirstbecameapparentwithVMissue4/90.MyfatherandIspentmanyhappyhoursinthelate‘40sandearly‘50ssittinginthefamilycaratarailroadcrossing,nearMinoa,N.Y.,watchingHudsons,MohawksandNiagaraspoundingdownthemainlineoftheNewYorkCentral.In1952,weattendedourfirststockcarraceatBrewertonSpeedwayand,in1955,madeourinitialtriptoWatkinsGlen.Thesewerespecialtimesthatweresharedjustbydadandme,mymotherandyoungerbrotherneverdevelopinganappreciationofthesethings. YouwereprivilegedtobeacquaintedwithJohnBurgess!OneslowFriday,in1977,JohngavemehispersonalattentionduringavisittotheCunninghamMuseum.Iparticularlyrememberhowhelovinglydescribedtomevariousdetailsofthebeautiful1927Delagegrandprixcar.Later,ontheoccasionofmypurchasingoneofhisprints,wecorrespondedandreminiscedaboutdirt-tracksprintcarracing.

InVM1/91youreflectedonhowtimeseemstoacceleratewithadvancingageandnotedthatthetimeallocatedtoanindividualseemsinsufficient forhim tocompletehisplannedprojects. I thoughtabout the truthof thesewords, frequently,over thenextyearas Icontemplatedtherapidly-approaching“bigfiveoh.”Iagonizedovermanynewquestions.MaybeIshouldsellthemodelrailroadstuffthat’sbeenaccumulatinginmycellarforthelasttwentyfiveyearsbecauseI’mnoclosertohavinganoperatinglayoutthanwhenIpurchasedthefirstpiece?But,thenagain,Imayhavethetimeafterretirement(mywifesays,“noway”).IalsothoughtaboutthosehappytimesatWatkinsGlenandothervenues,withmehurryingfromonevantagepointtoanotherwhiledadtrudgedbehind,andhowtheyquicklyhadslippedintohistory.Ofcourse,atthetimeitseemedlikenothingeverwouldchangemuch.Itneveroccurredtomethatthosewonderfulsportscarswouldsomedaybe“vintage”orthatracingcarswouldsproutwingsorthatdadwouldnotalwaysbethere. WhileVintage Motorsporttransportsmeintothepastonaspirituallevel,IactuallyexperiencedphysicaltimetravelonSeptember14,1985,whenIattendedthefirstSVRAracesatWatkinsGlen.Icouldn’tbelievemyeyes!Itwasallthereagain:TestaRossas,D-Jags,300SLs…allofit.Iranfromplacetoplacebabblingincoherently,strainingmyearstryingtocatchthevoiceofJohnDuvalfromtheloudspeakersandlookingovermyshouldertoseeifdadwasfollowing(no,butthere’smydaughter).Unfortunately,thisexperienceprovedtobeastransientastheprototype,thegloriouscarsofthe‘50sgivingwaytoFormulaFordsandNASCARstockers.Younoticedthis,too,andwroteaboutthelackof“significant”carsatvintageeventsinVM3/93. Justwhen it looked likeallhopeof reliving thepastwasgone forever,youbegancrankingouteditorialswhich indicate therearestillsometripsleftinthetimemachine.HereweareplanningafamilyvacationtoEnglandtovisitfriends,andyouwriteabouttheGoodwoodFestivalofSpeed!However,alittleresearchendsindisappointment.ThiseventtakesplaceinJunebeforemydaughter’sschoolbreaksforthesummer.ThenextissuearrivesandwelearnoftheHistoricFestivalatSilverstonethathappensinJulyandwhichprovidestheincentivetofinallywritetoyou.Ineedtoknowjustwhereexactlyin“jollyold”Silverstoneislocated?Mytravelguidesandmotorsportlibrarydonotdivulgethisinformationreadily.Ialsowouldliketoknowwhomtocontacttofindoutthedatesofthe1995event.ThisinformationisdesiredsothatIcanstartmakingreservationssoon.Anyhelpthatyoucangivemewillbeappreciatedgreatly(andmayberewarded).

Iwaslookingthroughthecubbyholesinmyrolltopdesk,circa1901, and out came 8 – 3.5 ” discs, the really good ones:1.44MBavailableoneachofthem.Ithinkweusedtoexpect

togetawholelibraryontoeachone.Timeshavechangedhaven’tthey? Every night in the olden times, I’d log onwithmy56Kmodem and the latest Tandy 1000, eager to glean tidbits fromPorschephileemails. Googledidn’t existnora search function,justacommunityofPorscheownersandfanssharingwhattheyknewandhelpingastheycould.

IhavetosaythatsinceIhadtheonly914inthearea,orPorscheforthatmatter,itwastheseemailliststhatenabledmetogetmy1970running.I’dwagerabetthattheadventoftheinternetmaillists,blogsandsearchenginesiswhathasenabledalargenumberofourcarstoberepairedandcaredforsincethelate‘80s.HeckIcouldneverhaveaffordedaP-mechanictokeepmycarsrunning.Theywould have been left to languish. Well,it’sthattimeofyearagain.WhenFallcomesaroundandthePorscheClubRacingseasoncomestoanend,webegintolookforanewvicetogetusintothewintersatisfied.ForthelastfouryearsBrianWatson,GeneRaymond,MikeDeluca,andIhaveparticipatedintheAmericanEnduranceSeries.Theseriesgenerallyconsistsoftwo9-hourracesonaSaturdayandSunday,withqualifyingandpracticeontheFridaybefore.Eachdrivergenerallydoesa1.5-hourshiftbeforebringingthecarinforfuel.ThisyearGeneRaymondi,unfortunately,couldnotjoinus,sowetappedintotheDEranksandbroughtJonMeyerfromtheNJPCAarea,whoisalongtimeDEinstructor. BrianWatsonhasbeenkindenoughtoallowustoabusehisbelovedcarandalsoprepareonethatcanliterallygonon-stopfor9hoursatracespeeds.WhileBrianwasbuildingusastrongengine,JackVasinaandIwouldmakeourweeklyWednesdayvoyagetoBrian’sshoptohelpBrianreplaceallbushings,rotors,andconsumablestoprepareforthebigevent.ThelastfewyearswehavegravitatedtotheMid-Ohiocircuitforourchanceatglory,butafterpersuadingtheboysaboutmygreatexperiencedownatSummitPoint,WVlastyearwithPCAVintageracing,theplanwassetinplace.Cue“CountryRoads”byJohnDenver.

AftersettingupThursdayandFriday,wequalifiedandweregriddedin46thpositionoutof65carsforSaturday’senduroand13thinourclassof15cars.Theracestartedat9:00amwithBrianWatsonbehindthewheel,followedbyMike,Jon,andthenmyself.Wemovedourpositionallthewayupinto3rdplaceinourclassandwerelookingforapodium,butduringmystintwelostthealternatorbeltandthecardiedontrack.AftergettingtowedinwequicklyreplacedthebeltandIwassentout,butnotafterlosingabout6laps.HopesofaSaturdaypodiumwerelostbutwestillfinisharespectable10thinclassand26thoverallall!Pickingup20spotsagainstoftenhigherhorspowerclassedcars.

AfterSaturday’sracewewentbacktothehaulertofigureoutourgameplanforSundayandwentthroughthecar,changingfluids,tighteningnutsandboltingthecar,anddoingwhateverfixesneededtobedonetogetthecarbackout.AswewerewaitingwenoticedMike,aftertakingthecheckeredflag,neverreturned.Afterfurtherinvestigationwefoundoutthatsomethinginthegearboxdecided

Sunday…..Westarted10thinclassoutof15and45thoverall.Thedaywasgoinggreat!Wemovedupabunchofpositionsandweresitting6thonthesamelapastheotherclass2cars.JustthenMikecalledovertheradioandsaidthattherewerenovoltsreadingonthegauge.Notthatdarnalternatorbeltagain!?!Afteraquickinspectionhecameinunderhisownpowerandwedeterminedthistimethatthealternatorbeltwasnottheproblembutthatthegaugehadmalfunctioned.SowesendMikebackoutnowtwolapsdownandin12th.Afterseveralhardstintsbetweenallthedriverswesnuckourwaybackupto6thwithanhourtogo.Mikewasourcloseragainandwekepttellinghimtopushastherewasachancewecouldgetupto4thatbest.WhileMikewasontrackIstartedtalkingtoafellowcompetitorwhosaidtheystillneededtopitonemoretime.Wait,what??Thereareonly45minutesleft,andseveralcarsinourclassstillneededtopit!PushMike!!!Whileallthiswashappeningthereservefuellightstartedflashingonthedashboard.Ourstressmeterwaspeggedforthelast45minutes.Wellitworked.Wediditandfinished2ndinourclassand17thoveralloutof65cars.Ourstrategy,someluck,andMike’sfinalstinthelpedusovertake5carsinourclassinthelast45minutes.Notbadfora1986944withallof140HP.
