The 45th National Wine Show was judged last week and I have great pleasure in presenting the full results.

Entries were up by 2% to 1,278 exhibits across 46 separate classes with 71 new exhibitors entering this year. This is a strong endorsement from the industry as to the rigor applied to this wine show, and the results that are generated.

Strike rates for medals were consistent with previous years with 10% of entries receiving gold medals, 22% silver and 35% bronze. The National Show demands pre-qualification through the endorsement of medals from other shows, therefore only 33% of the wines entered did not receive an award.

The major awards this year were shared by nine different regions from 15 different producers, which was a good result. In the end, classic combinations of region, variety and in many cases vineyard, have triumphed. A result very much about provenance.

There are several varieties that now deserve their own trophies as their entry levels have risen to more substantial numbers. Pinot Gris, Grenache and Tempranillo are all examples of sustained wine making improvements and skill.

In a year where we tweaked the judging panels to include the up and coming AWAC duxes as associate judges, as well as introduce a group of vastly experienced mentor judges, we have gained great insight into how this show may evolve in the future.

Message from the Chair of Judges

2019 National Wine Show Judges: Chair of judges David Bicknell (middle) withPanel chairs (L-R) David LeMire, Chris Crawford, Matt Harrop, PJ Charteris

The Organising Committee is firmly of the belief that the National Wine Show should continue to be an open, transparent competition that brings the best of the eligible wines in the country together every year and I agree. In the lead up to the 2020 Show we will review the regulations, class structures and ensure the most qualified and best judges are once again on hand to dispense the results. Our goal is to produce results that best reflect the quality, depth and diversity of this wonderful industry.

HIGHLIGHTSWHITESRiesling – a reversal this year, with the mature wines dominating the current vintage class with excellent examples going back to 2010 plus collecting the White Wine of Provenance trophy for the second year running. An impressive 17% gold strike rate for the mature wines versus 11% for the younger wines, perhaps the influence of the 2019 vintage played a part in top end quality. Semillon – very strong again, with the sublime, current vintage wines showing particularly well, with very few missing medals. Some of the mature wines were starting to show their age, however there was a ridiculously good 2009 in the mix, to square the ledger.

Chardonnay – strong across the 2018 and 2017 vintages, with multiple regions receiving top awards. The extra year in bottle definitely gave the 2017’s the edge on quality as the wines have built with bottle age into fully formed wines. In a tight contest, a wine from Margaret River taking the trifecta of trophies for: Best chardonnay, Best White Single Vineyard; and White Wine of Show.

REDSPinot Noir – there was little to show from the mature wines, but competitive as ever in the current vintage class with Tasmania and Yarra Valley dominating the top awards with six golds between them. For the second year in a row, a complex Yarra Valley wine of pedigree tipping out the darker fruited Tasmanian wines.

Shiraz – As with last year, 20 gold medals across the four classes, in a very solid performance. When it got down to the last seven wines, six different regions were still at the table, a testament to the winemaking skills across the country. In a surprise, a Tasmanian shiraz (Syrah) topped one of the classes, but it was another cool climate Yarra Valley wine that won the day. An outstanding exhibit that won the: Shiraz Trophy, Single Vineyard Red Trophy, Best Red Wine Trophy and Len Evans Memorial Trophy for Champion Wine of Show.

Cabernet Sauvignon and blends – another very good showing with 19 gold medals across the classes. The Margaret River may have dominated the pointy end taking out both the Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy and the Best Blended Red. However, it was

great to see five other regions from across the country in the hunt and closing in on those high-quality exhibits, and to also steal away the Red Wine of Provenance trophy.

On behalf of the thoroughly professional Wine Show Committee and Stewards, and the entire judging team, I would like to thank all the exhibitors for supporting the National Wine Show of Australia and trust you will continue that support in the future.

PJ CharterisPanel Chair

Born and raised in 1960’s and 70’s Waikato, PJ was a long way from the fine wines of the world. However, parents with a good thirst and eyes on a well-stocked wine cellar ensured any school holidays were spent pruning vineyards at nearby Vilagrad Wines.

Wine Science studies at Roseworthy in South Australia were followed by time spent in the tutelage of some of Australia’s best winemakers at Knappstein, Lindemans and Penfolds to name a few. Vintages in Oregon, California and the Rhone Valley added further to PJ’s experience and 12 years at the Hunter Valley’s eponymous Brokenwood Winery saw him develop the wines, vineyard resource and reputation as a fine wine producer.

In 2008 PJ and his partner Christina made their first vintage of Central Otago Pinot Noir, and now this, combined with their Wine Industry consulting business fills their time between Australia and New Zealand. He is currently Chair at Royal Sydney Wine Show.

Matt is the winemaker at Curly Flat Vineyards in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria. He is the current Chairman of Judges at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards. Matt has previously judged at the Brisbane and Sydney wine shows, as well as numerous regional shows.

He lives in the Macedon Ranges on a farm with his family, pets, a flock of sheep and a small vineyard.

From 2000–2007 he was Imports Manager with Negociants Australia, overseeing a portfolio that included many of the great names of Burgundy, including but not limited to Coche Dury, Roulot, Bonneau du Martray, Roumier, and Domaine de la Romanee Conti.

He writes regular columns for Australia’s Wine Business Magazine, is a wine show judge, is a partner in an Adelaide wine bar, Mother Vine, and from 2008–2016 was co-convenor of the Australasian Institute of Masters of Wine Educational Seminar.

Message from the Committee Chair

Another outstanding year for the National Wine Show of Australia. Entries were up, an extraordinary 71 new exhibitors entered the Show; the highest number of gold medals (132) in the past five years; new sponsors came on board and a strategic partnership was struck with the National Press Club of Australia.

Under the expert leadership of David Bicknell, in his second year as Chair of Judges, the twenty strong team of Panel Chairs, Judges and Associate Judges worked tirelessly over the course of three and a half intense days to judge 1,278 entries across 46 classes of varietal and blended table wines, sparkling and fortified wines. Through David’s innovation the 2019 judging ranks were bolstered by some of Australia’s and the world’s leading wine judges. The intent was to accelerate the development of Judges and Associate Judges who included for the first time the

two most recent Dux’s of the Australian Wine Appreciation Course. This ensured the integrity of judging outcomes. My sincere thanks to Tom Carson, Randall Pollard, Iain Riggs and Tim Kirk for fulfilling the role of Mentor Judge with such professionalism.

In accordance with ASVO guidelines the National Wine Show Committee undertakes targeted compliance audit of exhibitors entering the Show. In 2019 exhibitors from the Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley in Victoria were audited and no discrepancies or non-compliance with entry regulations were identified. I would like to thank them for their positive engagement with the audit process.

There is a huge twelve-month long effort to deliver all aspects of the National Wine Show. In that regard I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to my Deputy Chair, Michele Norris and my Committee colleagues, Stewards, support team and volunteers who have assisted in the delivery of another successful Show. We look forward to making 2020 an even better Show!
