Judge Douglas “ ou Hor«oback.’>ICorrejpondence of theN.T. Tribune.]

WAsniKorox, Juno 10.Tbe present condition of Mr. Douglasas a

candidate for the Presidency, and the*pertina-city withwhich bcdcmancs anoiiicntion,with-outregard to the consequences to himself orbis party, recall an incident which occurred atthe dinner table of the late Secreiar.v Marcy, and Lada run among tbe good thingsof thatday. It was in 165G, after tbereturn ot Mr. Pu-ebunan from Londou, and before theCincinnatiConvention. Secretary ‘Marcy gave what te'humorously called “adincertothec&ndsdates.”All whose names bad been spoken of in con-nection with the “glittering bauble*’were pre-sent, and prominent-among them were Mr.Douglas and Mr. Buchanan.

Gov. Marcy at mteivaU in the'conversationat tbe table, and in thevein of quittburner andoccasional veiled satire, which was one of thecharms of his social intercourse,*, look up thecandidates, or those which be chose to considerso (eriaiim, and very much to the entertain-ment of tbe party, except the anxious individ-ual sitting at the moment for his portrait, pro-ceeded to discuss the chances of each for anomination, lie appeared to hare got throughthe list, and the - Little Giant” had not beennoticed. Our ioiormant, who was one of theguests, and who, oavirc had the distinction tobe classed with the' aspirant.*, was,of course, aclose observer of the scene, shrewdly suspectedthat this omission was wanton end wicked onthe part of the Secretary, and was purposelymade with the* conviction f hut Douglas wouldfeel thathe had been “neglected,” and by re-minding the Governor of the fact, would editthe more marked attention of the other “can-didates” to what he bad in reserve.

And sora enough, the “Little Grant/’ afterwaiting impatiently torsome one else to noticethe omiflsion, was finally compcile4 say,“Well, Governor, what do you think of mychances?” “I beg your pardon, Mr. Douglas, for the seeming, but certainly unintentional, neglect,” said the Governor, “and I shall beobliged to tella story to illustrate yourchances. When I was &boy,in my native town in Massa-chusetts, standing one day by. .the roadside, talking with a neighbor,a horseman, tiding atthe topof his speed, his steed frotnieg nt themouth, and with flanks bloodywith the rowel, suddenly stopped in the road before us, andhurriedly inquired the distance to the nexttown. * Teu miles/said mycompanion. ‘Andbow long do you tbink it will uiku mu to gutthere?’demanded tbeexettedhorseman. ‘ Why,look a-here, my good friend, if you ride anyway decent, it will take jou just about twohours; but if you go likehell and damnationyou «f«r will git thtre.’. ”

Of course toe pertinenceof the Governor’sstory, which had been provoked by the over-weening anxiety of the “Little Giant” to benoticed, set the table in a roar, and soon ob-tainedfamilHjrcurrency.

A yearogo,Mr. Douglas stood very wellSouthas well as North. But be was uneasy, andmounted the“Harper” hobby, and he hasbeenriding it ever aucc, at a spued quite equal to(bat which was the point of Gov. kiurcy’s story, fouryears ago.

A Disavowal.—Mr. James P. Scott makesthe following explanation concerning the useofhis name as a member of thebogus Texas del-egation nt Cbicago:“ I find that my name has been most unwar-

rantably used by the contrivers of the Texasde'esatiou frsud in the Chicago National Re-publican Convention, and you will confer nla-Tor.by publishing the following statement offact* i“ 1 was in Chicago during the eittiog of the

ConveotioD, and the firstknowledge I receivedof my name haring been used in'this mannerwas from reading it in & newspaper. CallingiJon. C. Henderson to account, tu know what itmeant, he said I was all right as a delegatefromTexts, having been chosen to fill a vacancy, orK-methinp of that kind, and lli-t Mr. Cluob hada ticket for me. Mr. Clobb handed mea dele*gate’s ticket, which I placed in my pocket, andmade no useof it whatever, as 1 «<id not attendthe Convention at allas a delepa’e,and was neteven in that part of the Wigwam set apuit ferthem. I tpent a tew minutes looking at thesea of beads in the Wigwam on the third dayof the session, which was all the time 1spent mthe Convention.

Hoping that this explanation Kill place meall ri»ht wish the public; and baring no desireto share the honors or the disgraceful tnckwhich wasplayed upon the Conreatio.i with itsauthors, I am, yoursrespectfully,

James I*. Scott.JjjJ" The Polynesian, published at Honolulu,

copies into it-columns an account of a tragedynot long since enacted in one of our WVsteriicourts, and warns its readers against lapsinginto similar barbarism* It discourses very sc*riously upon Uie state of society which prerailsin the United Slates, and rejoices in the fuelthat murder is of comparatively rare occur*rcnce in Oahu. Thisrolce from the Antipodesshould not be disregarded. Some years sincewe sent out missionaries to christianize theSandwich Islands; if they in turn liod it neces-sary to send emissaries to civilize us, it augersrerr little for the progressive state of moralsin thisquarter of the globe. It is not at allunlike’y that the next missionary we send tothe F.jee Islands will rebound. Another cen-tury may see tetoed evangelists admonishingus of the evil of our wajs, and urging us torepentance. 'When that time arrives we hopewe maynot hare relapsed iuto barbarism so furas to cut them.

Warning to Mothers.—Tbe wife of Mr. Ed-ward Colver, white clearing her batten*, placedabout thirty bottles in a pun, and among themone tilled w'ltb laudanum,on the 2Cib ult. Herchild, aged 1G month*, took tbe bottle contain-ing the poison, and, before the mother discov-ered it, drank more thanhalf its contents Dr.Pierounelwas sent for, but when Lo arrived thechild was dying, and all efforts to save it werefruitless. An emetic, promptly given, mighthave saved bis life ; but the time lest in search-ing for a physician was longer than its littleframe could resist the poison, and death claimeditas its victim.—Bureau Co. ftpuhUcin,
