The wife of Mayor Tom Kane, and daughter of former Mayor Rutledge, has long been at the center of Chicago’s most important philanthropic causes. Her latest quest to save Chicago’s strug- gling schools seems to be making the grade. Early last year it was announced that a number of inner city elementary schools were sure to shut their doors due to financial shortages. But with the help of an outside partner, Mrs. Kane appears to have thwarted their demise.

The Windy City has a rich tradition of strong, popular leaders. However, none have been as loved and feared as the man entering our political arena tonight.

Tom Kane is a career politician – and a good one at that. As mayor, he is no stranger to glad-handing and backroom politics. He knows the game and runs it well. Tough, when it’s called for and charismatic when necessary, his many terms in office have made him the most powerful man in Illinois.

Yet despite years of absolute power, a degenerative brain disorder threatens to rip everything away from him. He can’t trust his memory, his closest allies, or even himself.

His wife, Meredith, knows nothing. His political aides have their suspicions but stay quiet. And State Treasurer Ben Zajac is too focused on his own political ambitions to notice.

This is going to be the toughest term yet for Mayor Kane. And one this city will never forget.

Mayor Kane’s power is built on a covenant with the people. They want a clean, prosperous city full of opportunity and progress. If he achieves it through deception and immorality, so be it. In politics, doing what’s right and doing what’s popular don’t always align. And as long as Kane gets the job done, the people look the other way every election year.

It appears that opposing aldermen are headed for a bitter vote on a key issue later this week. Although no one is speaking publicly about the showdown, sources say it looks like the situation will get worse before it gets better.
