While this was all taking place on the water and in the air, on land Awhitu Rural Fire Force’s Senior Station Offi- cer, David Millar, and Senior Firefight- er, J Allen, responded to an urgent call from a local resident off Irwin Road. A man had arrived at their house, claiming he swum ashore after his boat capsized. He needed help for his two friends, one of which he believed was still in the water. SSO Millar and SFF Allen mobilised immediately, however, soon realised that there was no way their First Re- sponse vehicle 5933 would make it to beach. Millar and Allen armed with a medi- cal kit , arranged for two bikes to use for the 3km path down to the beach. They found one of the fishermen lying on the rocks with a serious head wound and a broken pelvis. After bandaging up the head wound and administering oxygen, they awaited Westpac and Po- lice who landed on the beach to trans- port the fishermen to safety. This incident shows how a multi- agency response worked together to produce a fantastic result. All three fisherman made it back to their families, which highlights how important that Bar crossing call was to ensure that Coastguard knew this vessel was on the bar, therefore send- ing assets to start a search when the crossing was not closed. “The skipper has done all the right things, with everyone on board wear- ing a lifejacket and logging a Bar Cross- ing Report before with Coastguard Ra- dio before heading over the bar.” “This safety and information service provided free of charge by Coastguard saves lives, and significantly reduces the response time of search and res- cue services,” says Mr Burge. Emma’s DeskA note from

I don’t actually remember agreeing to Bossman Steve’s idea of giving up sugar, espe-cially not right before Christ-mas when there is so much delicious food about.

I wonder if he remembers that I am on my diet of see-food-and-eat-it.

It is said that newspapers and an unhealthy eating life-style go hand in hand, but I think that it is time to break the cycle.

Several weeks ago, I wrote about one of the most em-barrassing experiences in my life – my gym pants splitting in the most unflattering fashion.

So from today, I have re-cruited Calendar Girl Lynn, much to her delight, and have joined forces to shed our waistlines and attempt to live a healthier lifestyle for the next three weeks by cutting out highly processed foods and sugar.

From today, there will be no more pies, no more cokes and no more sweet, delicious muffins. These next couple of weeks are going to be test-ing and I apologise now in ad-vance for being grumpy from my withdrawals.

We will be updating our progresses and setbacks each

week, and would love to hear our reader’s tips or advice if they have been through the same experience.

We are on the home stretch now, with only four issues to go before we shut the press for the year.

Christmas is fast approach-ing, and everyone is becom-ing incredibly busy. One per-son that is rushed off their feet is the amazing Zoe Thomson of the Waiuku Colony Cat Res-cue.

While caring for her young family, Zoe volunteers so much of her time catching un-wanted cats and kittens, has them de-sexed, and finds the furry friends new homes. As kitten season has just begun, Zoe is bursting at the seams with rescued kittens and cats, and could really use a helping hand.

We have set up an appeal for her, which you can find on page 6.

It is also a great reminder that pets are forever, not just for Christmas, so please think wisely when deciding if a kit-ten or puppy would make a great present.

The hour and place of prayer and the services of public worship the child should be taught to regard as sacred because God is there. And as reverence is manifested in attitude and demeanour, the feeling that inspires it will be deepened. {CG 539}

No soul can prosper without time to pray, to search the Scriptures; and all should, as far as possible, have the privilege of attending public worship. All need to keep the oil of grace in their vessels with their lamps. Above all others, the workers who are thrown into the society of worldlings need to have Jesus held up before them, that they may behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world. {CH 422}

A reader from Waiuku wrote to The Post regarding the ‘mysterious flying object’ that shot up in the sky around 3:30pm on Tuesday 24th. They thought that it looked to be travelling at the wrong angle to be a plane and travelled at a rapid rate as it disappeared behind the clouds. They could also see the vapour trail arcing right across the sky as they headed to Pukekohe. The Post’s designer was in Pukekohe at the time and was quite taken by the sight as it formed quite a large and thick arcing cloud, however taking into account that there was a plane in the vicinity flying at 36,000ft it would be hard to spot the plane and perhaps the vapour trail from

that plane could have been affected by winds that caused it to spread out whilst dispersing. The Post contacted the CAA and this was their response: Nothing unusual in this at all. It is likely a contrail (vapour trail). Here is a screenshot from “Flight Radar 24” at 2.46 yesterday afternoon (1.46 UTC) – it’s not obvious from the photos supplied what direction the contrail is in, but there are a few jets in shot there that it might be – the QFA jet highlighted is high enough to do this. It’s not something that CAA would investigate as it is perfectly normal - albeit always interesting to see in our skies.

Hunua pest control programme

Thank you, goodbye to pests and important safety information.

The operational phase of the Hunua pest control programme has come to an end and we’re now in monitoring mode.

The aerial application of 1080 during winter 2015 has been successful, with a significant decrease in rats and possums across the Hunua Ranges.

Special thanks to the people that live in and around the Hunua Ranges. This was a large operation that, while supported by many, was not welcomed by everyone; however we appreciated your patience, input and interest.

Caution: dogs are still at riskThe caution period will remain in place until early 2016, until we are confident all 1080 no longer poses a risk. Avoid taking dogs to the Hunua Ranges or, if you live nearby, keep on a lead, consider using a muzzle and prevent them from scavenging potentially deadly carcasses.

Lewis Tiller has just landed his big break by being selected to play for the West Ham United Under-18 squad in London, and his father couldn’t be any more proud.

Emma Sharplin - [email protected]

ll The Waiuku teenager was selected after being scouted and asked to attend a training session recent-ly, where West Ham officials were looking for talent.

Proud father, Deane Sutherland, explained that the opportunity is huge for the youngster.

“Lewis moved to Waiuku last year, as he was off the radar in Dannevirke and there weren’t many sport-ing opportunities for him down there. He went on to play for Waiuku College, where they became top of their division, and was further snapped up by the Wai-uku First Division. I was then befriended by a talent scout. I didn’t know who he was at the time, and he suggested taking Lewis along to the West Ham trial at Kings College. I then found out he was the scout for the club itself.”

Lewis was the only player from the session selected to be part of a training and development squad at West Ham’s London base. However, the more he played, the more interested they became and he was instead cho-sen to be part of the famous club’s Under-18 squad.

“I am quite nervous, but really excited to be given this opportunity. It will be great to build up contacts,” says Lewis.

Deane explained that they now have to come up with a training programme, to ensure Lewis is ready for the upcoming season.

“Most of the players who have been selected will be just coming out of their season, but we will be only just beginning ours. Lewis is currently rigorously train-ing with the Summer League Premiership teams, who have been very welcoming.”

Lewis and Deane will be London bound mid-Feb-

ruary, to help ensure that the rising football star be-comes conditioned to the climate. From here, they will also be travelling to Queensland to compete in another tournament.

“If anything, the whole experience will be a great learning curve for him. Lewis’ confidence has grown, and he hopes to bring back valuable skills to the club, who, I believe, have helped him immensely to get to this stage. He holds many of Waiuku’s players in high regard, and coach, Jim Evans, saw the potential that he has, and encouraged us to pursue it further.”

Auckland

llArriving in New Zealand last Thursday after an extended OE of 12 years, Steven and Katie have cy-cled from London to New Zealand, which has been described as ‘living the dream’.

After staying at a friend’s house in Auckland that night, Steven and Katie set out for Waiuku the follow-ing morning. However, unknown to them, their friends and family had organised a welcoming team to ride with them for the last couple of kilo-metres into town.

Over 40 riders, including television cameras from Seven Sharp, met the couple at the ‘Welcome to Waiuku’ sign, and rode into the town centre, where businesses came out to greet them after their long journey.

“I thought it would be just mum and dad welcoming us, but to have everyone here is just crazy! What an amazing turnout, we are just blown away,” said Steven. The couple are now looking forward to spending quality time with family and catch-ing up with friends.

I was listening to a Sermon recently and this point that the preacher touched on just tickled my interest, so here we have the interesting results from that. We have this in Deuteronomy 1:25 “And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought [it] down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, [It is] a good land which the LORD our God doth give us.”

Numbers 13:23-25 “And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and [they brought] of the pomegranates, and of the figs. The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence. And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.”

Here we have Israel pretty much fresh out from Egypt (Sin) and now at the boarders of Canaan for the very first time, and then they proved to be not very brave and pretty faithless. They pressed Mosses for a reconosance trip first, just to see if God had done what he had promised, just to check him out first. Was this a good place or should we just go back to Egypt. Let us check out God first, so where was their faith after weeks of undeniable miracles; oceans splitting to make a dry path through the seas, fountains and floods of water from rocks in a dry desert land, food on the ground every day (except Sabbath), massive victories in battles with nil or negligible casualties, shoes and clothes that did not wear out, and the list goes on, yet they continued to doubt Gods abilities big time, and it appears, basically all the time.

Caleb and Joshua bring back a grand report of an Amazing Place; and here are the evidences in the fruits of the new Kingdom, they have pockets full of produce and a huge bunch of grapes suspended between them. Come look at all this beautiful bounties, handle them, smell them, and eat them; for these are very real. So what are the fruits of the Heavenly Kingdom that we are on the boarder of? Well Galatians has a very interesting list of the fruits of a new kingdom as found in Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

Question; when was the last time you ever bumped into some of this Heavenly Crop? Are these fruits just old wives tales, fables and fiction about some fairy land of peace, beauty and harmony, in a land far far away? Why should we not be sprouting them right now and in abundances on this side of the Promised Land, and seeing them with those we meet, those we Worship with; this is a Heavenly Crop? Heaven is a reality, and not a figment of some imagination, Jesus Christ is real, Salvation from sin is real, the end of this world as we know it is real, Jesus is coming back very soon to set up his Kingdom and to rule and that is also very real. This is not a fantasy; it is a reality and it is so soon to break upon us, so how are you “In Christ?”

Why are we not each feasting on this Heavenly Bounty as we interact with each other? We should be seeing these fruit in abundance and should be able to sample and to enjoy the fruits thereof. This Heavenly Fruit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance, should be cropping bountifully and ripe fruits should be dropping on the ground all around us as we each journey through life.

These scattered fruits should allow other people who find them and to pick them up and to see that there is a better way, a much better land, that Heaven is an actual reality as they have just had a wee foretaste of the bounties. I guess we could call it “Witnessing” when in reality it is just living by Faith, “walking the walk and talking the talk.” So how good are we at this, and why do we stay on this side of the boarder when “By Faith” we can actually be sort of living in God’s Kingdom on the other side right now and daily, moment by moment, in advance of that reality.

The Redeemed of all Ages get to live in this reality world forever, so why not get a head start and practice and enjoy living in the “Kingdom of God” before it arrives here as an actuality. That is what Faith is, having and experiencing something that is so close, but not quite within your grasp. Watch children at play zooming their cars across the floor, they are the driver, it is a reality. Little girls have dolls houses and such, and they are playing mother-daughter. Country boys have plastic animals and plastic fences and they are playing farming like daddy and moving their stock about. To them it is a reality, not quite in the hand, but then that’s near enough for them.

Dear Reader; how is our Faith and trust in God? Are we living our “Heavenly Life” now “By Faith?” James admonishes us to be doers of the word and not hearers only (James 1:22) so how much doing is there? A saying years ago went something like this, “Do you have a Wish Bone or a Back Bone?” The point is about meaningless thoughts verses meaningful activity, or doing and not hearing only. Let us each resolve to be doing, practicing, and fruiting bountiful Heavenly, Promised Land crops, which is an undeniable proof of the reality of our Faith in God.

Cat attacked in malicious actA Pokeno family is devastated after finding out their cat suffered injuries that could not be described as anything other than a malicious attack.

Emma Sharplin - [email protected]

ll On the evening of Tuesday, November 10, Karin Cox and her family found Hokey, their spayed, ginger tabby, in pain and with only partial use of her back legs.

“We found it quite odd that she wasn’t waiting for us when we got home that eve-ning, as she doesn’t venture far from our house. When she came home later that night, the first thing I thought was silly cat, getting into fights. But by the morn-ing, I could see there was something very wrong,” explained Karin.

The family took her to Franklin Vets first thing the next morning after her condition had not improved over night.

After ruling out being hit by a car and a cat fight, the vets were stunned by the ginger tabby’s injuries, as there was no ex-ternal trauma or abrasions.

“Apparently Hokey had been picked up or dragged by her tail, and then been swung with such force that it has severed her spinal cord and damaged nerves in her pelvis. Our vet was so horrified once she came across the damage that she had to get a second opinion from a fellow vet. She just couldn’t believe that someone had done this.” It was touch and go for the next few days, as the veterinarians tried to es-tablish whether Hokey would have blad-der and bowel control, and if they needed to amputate her tail.

The little ginger feline is a fighter and is making a gradu-al recovery; however, there is a possible chance that Hokey may not gain the full use of her back legs and tail. After dis-cussing Hokey’s situation with the local constable, Karin took to Facebook to see if anyone knew of the incident and was overwhelmed by the Pokeno community’s response. Some residents even offered finan-cial assistance to help pay for the vet bill.

“Our community is just so generous, and while the offer of financial assistance is amazing, we didn’t feel comfortable tak-

ing their money. We just wanted to raise as much awareness as possible.”

Karin doesn’t understand how someone could perform such a cruel act to a defence-less animal.

“She has never ventured far from our house, so if someone had a problem with her, why not just spray her with a water pistol or go door knocking? We have now been left with a vet bill and having to explain to my children that someone has abused their pet and try to fath-om why. If you have a problem, talk about it, and a simple sorry would go a long way.”

Devon and Karin Cox with Hokey, who was attacked two weeks ago in what has been described as a cruel and malicious act.

police seeking witnessesll Waikato Police are still in-vestigating a sexual assault on a teenage schoolgirl that happened on Thursday, No-vember 12, 2015. Police are still seeking the public’s help in locating the offenders re-sponsible. The victim, a teen-age girl in her school uniform, was walking home about 4pm on Thursday, November 12, after being dropped off by the school bus near the library in Meremere.

She was attacked by four males, taken against her will and sexually assaulted near-by. Mr Cummings said three of the offenders were described as Maori or Polynesian males, aged 16-20 years old. “The fourth offender was possibly a Caucasian male of slim build about 180cm tall.

The group were last seen running south on Te Puea Ave in the direction of the town library and store after the at-tack.” Anyone who saw any-thing or thinks they can iden-tify these four offenders can contact Acting Detective Ser-geant Cummings at the Nga-ruawahia Police on 07 211 7291, your calls will be treated in confidence.

Alice lands Ambassador awardPukekohe’s Alice Ward-Allen is one of two talented Auckland students who have won the sought-after Blake Ambassador Award, and will be helping scientists answer environmental questions facing New Zealand.

ll Alice, a former Pukekohe High School student, took out the award for the Hawkes Bay Landscape-scale Eco-logical Restoration project. This will see her working alongside other award win-ner, Rachel Cooper and De-partment of Conservation (DOC) rangers and partners on the large scale Cape to City ecological project. The aim of the project is to en-hance native biodiversity in the Hawke’s Bay region from 8-27 Februrary 2016.

The Ambassadorships will include work such as trap and bait station setting and monitoring, feeding Kaka,

preparing petrel nest boxes, kiwi and pateke monitoring, bittern habitat restoration and reptile monitoring.

The Sir Peter Blake Trust, in partnership with Antarcti-ca New Zealand, the Antarc-tic Heritage Trust, NIWA and DOC, awarded 14 awards in total this year, eight more than last year.

Alice has just complet-ed her Bachelor of Science, majoring in Zoology and Ecology at the University of Otago. During her time in Dunedin, Alice has been in-volved with numerous pest eradication and conserva-tion programmes in the Ota-go Region.

“Conserving our environ-ment and making people aware of what’s happening in our own backyard is so im-portant. I can’t wait to actual-ly get in the field and make a difference after three years of learning all about the change that needs to happen,” she says.

To be eligible to receive a Blake Ambassa-dor Award, applicants must be 18-25 years old with leadership potential, and have dem-onstrated a passion for the environment. In some cases, study in the relevant field may be required. Applications for the 2016 awards will open in April 2016.

It isn’t often that we steal ourselves away from our computer screens, but when Kylie Hall from Castaways Resort offered Lynn and I the opportunity to sample their delectable new menu, we just couldn’t resist.

Emma Sharplin [email protected]

ll Those who haven’t travelled to this amazing setting above Karioitahi Beach do not realise what they are missing out on. Agave Restaurant is nestled in the cliff tops, overlooking the picturesque Karioitahi Beach. Any seat in the res-taurant allows you to soak in the panoramic views of the stunning seascape. Just trying to describe the beau-ty doesn’t do it justice.

After an extensive selec-tion process, a new spring/summer menu has been in-troduced, with meal choic-es that all can enjoy. This made it incredibly hard for Lynn and I to choose just one option.

We settled on the Sticky Venison Ribs and the Crispy

Skin Ora King Salmon, and tried our best to keep our stomachs from rumbling at just the thought of our meals. The venison ribs were served with baby wa-tercress, fennel salad and coriander – a true meat lover’s dish, with the meat so flavoursome and tender, it was falling off the bone.

Nestled in a bed of sweet pea and preserved lemon risotto, pea puree, wilt-ed rocket, and spinach leaves, the Ora King Salm-on looked stunning on the plate, almost too beautiful to be disturbed. The smell emanating from both dish-es was enough to tantalise the taste buds.

I was pleasantly sur-prised with the salmon, as usually I can only eat small amounts due to the rich-ness of this delicious fish. Instead, I devoured the whole dish and nearly the plate. I was then advised by Kylie that only 200 busi-nesses across Australia and New Zealand are selected to serve Ora King Salmon and Agave at Castaways Re-sort was one of those busi-nesses selected. Ora King Salmon has a reputation

similar to that of ‘wa-gyu’ beef, with each fish being tagged and traced for authenticity

Dessert, again, was a hard selection to make, but in the end we picked the Tiramisu Gateaux and Honey and Crème Brulee. The flavours were heavenly – so irre-

sistibly smooth that you had to savour every bite.

The meal was com-pleted with one of the best coffees we had ever passed through our lips.

Head Chef, Alan Mc-Ghee at Agave Restau-rant, needs to be ac-knowledged for such a delectable meal.

His wide range of ex-perience, which in-cludes leading chef teams on charter ships and Pacific Island re-sorts, plus working at a UK based Michelin star restaurant, has been clearly shown in the menu and what was pre-sented to us.

For any business to reach a milestone birthday is a great achievement, but to reach nearly 100 years in business is something to celebrate.

ll Richardson’s Jewellers recently cel-ebrated their 88th birthday, with long standing clients and friends attending an evening function at their premises on Queen Street, Waiuku.

Richardsons Jewellers originally be-gan on Bowen Street, where Retro Fit is today, and was created by Herbert Richardson, or Herbie as he was fond-ly known.

His business originally started with selling gramaphones, records and watch making.

Herbie was one who kept up with the ever changing world, and moved into electrical goods when electricity was introduced into the area.

This saw Herbie manage a fleet of seven electrical service vehicles that looked after the Franklin and North Waikato areas.

The business further progressed in-to jewelry and good quality European homewares, and is now currently lo-cated on Queen Street. It is now run by Leonie and her brother, Mark, who are the third generation of Richardsons.

Leonie believes that the reason the business has survived for so long is due to the Waiuku community being such loyal supporters of their business, and would like to thank everyone for their long standing commitment to Richard-son’s Jewellers.

newsbitesProtestors storm the court

ll Thursday morning in Auckland saw animal rights activists and locals from the community of Patumahoe hold a large protest outside the Environment Court. Around 70 people held placards and chanted ‘Crad-dock Farms! Shut them down!’ for an hour outside the courthouse. This is one of the largest protests ever seen outside the Environment Court in Auckland.

Craddock Farms want to build a colony cage egg farm in Patumahoe but have come up against strong opposition from locals and activists who don’t want the farm built. Auckland City Council declined Craddock Farms application to build earlier this year based on concerns about odour affecting the township.

Craddock Farms appealed the decision and on Thursday morning a seven day hearing commenced in the Environment Court. Craddock Farms has adjust-ed its plans by adding around 120 10-metre chimney stacks to its buildings in the hopes of mitigating odour issues. “The proposed factory farm will be one of the biggest of its kind in our country, confining 310,000 hens to cruel colony cages,” Stop Craddock Farms spokesperson, Deirdre Sims, says.

“I’m hoping to confront Stefan Craddock at some stage during the hearing and ask him how he sleeps at night knowing 310,000 hens will suffer horribly in his cruel cages, if the plan goes ahead,”

“Our group wants to see a ban on cages for chickens so we’ve joined up with the locals and have been work-ing with them for over a year to stop the farm being built. Stefan Craddock and the rest of the egg industry are personally responsible for the suffering of over 3 million caged chickens in our country. I want to ask Stefan why he thinks animal suffering on such a mas-sive scale is acceptable,” says Ms. Sims.

rural Crime Prevention advice

ll According to the Pukekohe Police, over the last sev-eral months, it has been noticed that the Franklin rural area have experienced an increase in rural burglaries, which includes offending in this area. Offenders have burgled residential dwellings, but more recently, ga-rages sheds and out buildings are being specifically targeted in the rural locations.

Popular commodities targeted by offenders in-clude chainsaws, mowers, nail guns, power tools, leaf blowers and small generators. One of the best ways to prevent yourself becoming a victim of a burglary is to complete a number of steps to deter offenders. These include the following: If you have gates giving access to your property, ensure they are closed at all times and locked if possible. Lock your doors and windows when not at home, and also at night. Ensure your ga-rage, sheds and out buildings are kept locked. Place sig-nage on your gates or fence (ie. Beware of Dogs, CCTV in operation.) Lock your vehicles and keep the keys in a hidden place in the house. Consider investing in an alarm, sensor lights and CCTV. Register your se-rial numbers on the SNAP website: www.snap.org.nz which includes a photograph. Don’t forget your out-side tools and equipment.

In recent months they have also had a number of firearms stolen during rural burglaries. As a respon-sible Firearms Licence holder, please ensure your guns are secured safely at all times and stored separate from the ammunition and bolts. Lastly, please do not hesi-tate to call 111 if you see a vehicle or persons acting suspiciously in your area.

Hon. Todd McClay, paid a visit to Pukekohe last Tuesday, to meet with local businesses and to attend a public meeting which was hosted by MP for Hunua, Andrew Bayly.

ll Mr McClay is MP for Rotorua and holds a number of senior portfolios, including Minister of Revenue, Minis-ter for State Owned Enterprises, Asso-ciate Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Associate Minister of Trade.

The Minister visited with two Puke-kohe businesses, Balle Brothers and FRENZ Free Range Egg Company, and then spoke to a group of about 40 peo-ple in a Public Meeting.

The business visits involved repre-sentatives from NZ Trade and Enter-prise, who have been working with them to expand their exports.

The public meeting focused on the plans for the government to move to-wards a simpler tax regime.

Revenue to make it much easier for individuals and companies to interact with the Department and pay their taxes, including payroll, GST and provisional tax. Mr Mc-Clay said he was genuinely inter-ested in what the public, busi-nesses and industry experts have to say about this modernisation process.

Todd McClay has a family con-nection with Franklin, in particu-

lar with Waiuku and Glenbrook. His parents grew up in the area, and he went to Wesley College.

Andrew Bayly said the visit to Pukekohe was part of an on-go-ing programme of inviting senior Ministers to the Electorate. It fol-lows the visit by Hon. Nikki Kaye four weeks ago to discuss school-ing and educational issues, given the significant population fore-cast within the Electorate.

ll A bit of enthusiasm utilised into hard work saw Year 10 students from Waiuku College sprucing up the tired looking grand-stand at the Waiuku Rugby Club.

Under the watchful eyes of Brett Donald, father of rugby legend, Stephen Donald, and Social Stud-ies teacher, the students removed graffiti and gave the grandstand a good lick of paint last Tuesday.

The students were the remainder that stayed be-hind from school camp last week, and thoroughly en-joyed their time out in the sunshine.

Brett Donald, who is also president of the local rugby club, said that it originally started as just a general tidy

up. “The students worked incredibly fast, and wanted to paint, so I let them go for it. I think most came away with more paint on them-selves than the seating,” he laughs.

The students were proud of their work, and couldn’t believe the amount of graf-fiti that was on there.

“It is a great feeling, knowing that we are giving back to the community,” said Joe Vulawalu.

“It certainly was a great opportunity to tidy up the stadium, it really needed it,” said Hayley Jensen.

The students now hope that there is more respect for the grandstand and that there will be less graf-fiti now that they have ti-died it up.

One of the things people love about Franklin is the unique rural characteris-tics. Whether it be our landscapes, farm-ing, lifestyle or sense of community that seem to reflect the values commonly as-sociated with being part of a small and close knit community.

All these things are being challenged by the unprecedented growth of Auck-land as a region. What is obvious is that this growth is not restricted to within Auckland Council boundaries and it would seem that the region has turned a bit of a corner in regard to development. A significant factor for that is being part of what is known as the golden triangle – Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato. This combined area is seeing the high-est growth rates in the country across a number of sectors.

You just need to look at the growth and changes locally in Pokeno or Tuakau and elsewhere in Hamilton and Tauranga to see how important this larger area is strategically to NZ. The challenge for us is how do we manage the pressures of increasing populations and the needs of those people. Ensuring we have cru-cial infrastructure like roading and wa-ter networks in the right places, of the right size and operating in right way. It is that last point that is going to be test-ed in Pukekohe with a public meeting on 10th December.

Will there be the first set of traffic lights in the town?

Something those of us who have lived and worked here for any period of time

will have dreaded. Mainly because lights are what are found in urban towns and not rural ones like Pukekohe, we have roundabouts that are better and we don’t want to end up like Papakura with lights every few hundred metres. All very valid, but also all with a degree of emo-tion linked to those rural town charac-teristics we all cherish.

What cannot be denied is that vehicle numbers, public transport use and as-sociated public expectations and con-cerns over pedestrian and cyclist safe-ty are increasing.

With the creation of the new park and ride facility, bus interchange and new footbridge to the rail station, the need to manage traffic, pedestrians and sig-nificantly keeping buses on time to link with the trains and their timetable is crit-ical. It is safety that is front of mind for me personally.

That is why what happens at the inter-section of Manukau Road and Customs Street along with considering how near-by Harris Street is affected is going to be a great discussion. There are three op-tions, a roundabout, a ‘seagull island” set up and controlled lights triggered by buses or a que of cars leaving the park and ride – not a normal phasing set of lights!

My view has always been, lights as the last option, but what we need is a solu-tion that will provide the best outcome for those using these affected roads reg-ularly so we need to consider all options with an open mind.

Less than a week before the Tuakau inorganic rubbish collection, an unfavourable person was too lazy to wait and decided to dump their trash on Alders Road, just under the Tuakau Bridge.

The inorganic collection was held on Saturday at the Tuakau Saleyards, and was a mere $15 per trailer load.

Dumping trash or littering is nothing but pure lazi-ness. It effects the environment and is further cost to the rate payers, with them forking out the cost to clean up this mess.

Tim Harty, Service Delivery general manager for Waikato District Council, says he also finds the dump-ing of rubbish disappointing.

“Council provides a weekly refuse collection service to Tuakau, so it’s disappointing that this irresponsi-ble behavior is continuing in our district. Fortunately with the information we’ve been provided we should be able to follow up with the person, or persons, com-mitting this offence and take the necessary action.”

The maximum fine Council can issue for this offence is $400, however, the maximum fine that can be award-ed to Council following a prosecution is $5000 for an individual and $20,000 for a body corporate for leav-ing litter. If that litter is likely to endanger any person or to cause physical injury the fines are $7500 for an individual, or $30,000 for a company.

‘Adopt a Tree’ campaign brings Christmas cheer to Waiuku

Pictured above are View Road School students proudly displaying their dec-orated Christmas trees as part of the ‘Adopt a Tree’ campaign. This was suc-cessfully launched by the WB&DA last year as a means of strengthening the links between local business and schools and dresses the sidewalks of the Waiuku Town Centre with a bit of Christ-mas cheer.

The concept, which has proved a great community success, sees local busi-nesses sponsor a plywood ‘tree’, which

is then decorated by students from lo-cal schools. Businesses then display the trees at their premises over the Christ-mas period. Town Centre Manager Shar-lene Druyven says, “We were very hap-py with the gorgeous trees collected and the kids really put a lot of thought into the businesses that were sponsor-ing them. A huge thank you to the busi-nesses and schools that participated in this initiative, we plan on making more trees available next year due to their popularity”.

The students are going to experience a first-hand view of these amazing insects building their hives, working together and helping the environment.

Some of the pupils have already been lucky enough to put on bee proof suits with veils and gloves and look inside the hives, .

“It has already sparked an amazing amount of in-terest amongst the students,” reports teacher and bee keeper, Trevor Bennett.

“Many of our classes have taken the opportunity to learn about the lives and habits of this colony animal which performs a very important job for us as humans by pollinating important crops.”

Waiuku has two types of hives to study; the Lang-stroth and the Top Bar hives. Both were started from local swarms, one of which had landed at the Bowl-ing Club, and they were very happy to have it safely removed. The school has set up its apiary in a fenced nature compound away from the classrooms and play grounds. The children will have supervised viewing and perhaps even get to enjoy a share of some honey once the hives have a made enough for their own needs.

What’s buzzing at Waiuku Primary?wa i u ku Primary is very pleased to announce the recent arrival of two bee colonies at the school.

Lynn and Emma have exploded onto the food scene, eating everything in sight and it is starting to show!

ll With nothing left in the wardrobe that fits and tired of purchasing clothes in a bigger size, it is time for the Post’s ‘Sugar Babes’ to stop eating all the junk.

Pud-Pud Emma and Put-Put Lynn will hold back all the sugar for the next three weeks, to see if they can drop a dress size or two in time for Christmas.

It isn’t going to be an easy feat, with both self confessed sugar addicts, but we will see how they progress over the next few weeks as they write about their

experience in weekly columns. The healthy competition is on with

the ‘Sugar Babes’ vs Team Steve as prep-arations are underway to loose the flab and feel fab!

“Failure is not an option” say the girls who, despite having a love affair with ev-erything greasy, sugary or full of calories, are willing to give this their best shot.

“No more late night runs to town for ice creams and pies” says Lynn who is already regretting her decision to com-mit to this daunting journey.

Both, however, are looking forward to smaller waist lines and possibly bi-kinis, and hope to look more like sleek dolphins rather than beached whales.

I am clinically obese, with an estimated 43% body fat and 60kg overweight.

Steve Douglas

ll Let me start out by saying that we offer no medical advice and suggest that you con-tact your doctor before embarking on any mas-sive health changes.

What you are being presented with here is a personal reflection of my food habits that I personally believe is making me fat.

I have put on a whop-ping 60kg in the last five years, with 20kg com-

ing from the last year two years. I have done a ton of research look-ing at calorie intake verses activity and am convinced that exercise alone will not reduce my weight dramatical-ly due to the amount of hidden sugar my body will just store rather than burn.

So for the next three weeks I am going to live sugar free, make healthy choices and I am going to exercise as well. My cholesterol is extremely high and without an intervention I stand the risk of diabe-tes and a whole range of weight related illnesses.

Endorphins - the body’s natural pain relieving chemicals - are released when we push ourselves physically. Endorphins are natural opiates that work in a similar way to morphine, and are sometimes called ‘feel good’ hormones, because they boost our mood and can make us feel quite ‘high’.

Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow - ‘Spotting the symptoms before it’s too late’

Helen Wright BSc(Hons) Ost(UK);CMIOSH (UK);

PGDip(Hlth Erg)NZ/ACC/UK Registered Osteopath

Human Factors/Ergonomics Consultant

You don’t have to be Roger Federer or Lydia Ko to suffer from Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow. Even if you’ve never played tennis or golf in your lifetime you can still suffer from/experience the symptoms of a Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow.

Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow are both overuse/inflammatory injuries caused by any activity that repetitively over-loads the arm (wrist and elbow). The difference between the two lies is in the location of the inflammation. Standing with arms straight down and palms facing forward Tennis Elbow is an inflammation of the outside of the elbow (lateral epicondyle) and Golfers Elbow the inside of the elbow (medial epicondyle).

The symptoms associated with ei-ther condition can include an ache in the elbow area (with activity and/or at rest), tenderness, swelling and even pain or weakness in the forearm and wrist. Either condition if left and ig-nored can result in debilitating symp-

toms that can take a long time to heal and can result in time off work or away from those activities that you enjoy most. Taking note of the warning signs and taking action is important.

The immediate treatment if you start to experience such symptoms is rest from the repetitive activity. Any pain and swelling may also be reduced by icing the painful area.

If your symptoms don’t resolve or the symptoms sound like something you have been ‘putting up with’ you need to seek assistance. At Osteopa-thy Pukekohe we invariably treat pa-tients with Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow type presentations and are able to successful eliminate pain/symptoms and restore full activity/function. There are currently 3 osteopaths prac-ticing from the Way of Life Health Shop, Mon - Sat inc. so give us a call if you would like a consultation/treat-ment. CHRISTMAS CURE ALLS & SUMMER FIRST AID

An allergy is an altered immune response to a substance that is not normally harmful. “Aller-gies” are becoming increasingly common but it is important to identify the type of reaction to indicate appropriate treatment.

Classical allergic reactions invoke an immedi-ate response - usually within a couple of hours - and are mediated by IgE (immunoglobulin E). They are typically triggered by a small number of specific allergens. Examples range from hayever to life-threatening anaphylactic reactions. They can often be identified with orthodox medical tests.

Delayed sensitivity reactions take up to 72 hours and are mediated by IgG (immunoglobu-lin G). They display a wide variety of symptoms in different systems and are not always picked up by orthodox tests – such as skin prick tests. Common culprits are foods regularly included in the diet - and cravings or addictions are likely . Emotional and physical stress, overuse of stimu-lants, repeated use of antibiotics and irregular diet may increase the response.

Food intolerance occurs when a person is deficient in the digestive enzymes needed to breakdown the particular food. E.g. lactose in-tolerance is a deficiency of lactase. Undigested food ferments in the colon causing bloating, gas, cramping and diarrhoea.

Common signs that may indicate food aller-gies or intolerance are:

Nervous system - mood swings, depression, sleeping problems, fatigue.

Respiratory symptoms – wheezing, shortness of breath, sinus and throat prob-

lems, excessive mucous. Digestive disturbances – diarrhoea, constipa-

tion, gas, cramps, bloating, nausea, reflux. Skin problems – eczema, dry skin, hives,

rashes, itchiness, welts. Muscle aches and pains – arthitides, loss of

strength, migraines. Malnutition – anaemia, dizziness, weight

fluctuialtions, osteoporiosis, delayed growth, fertility problems.

How do you sort out what the problem is?A food diary helps pinpoint foods that have

an adverse effect on you - record all foods and drinks taken for at least a week and record any symptoms both physical and emotional that you experience.

Hair allergy testing – helps to identify masked or hidden allergy foods. It is available when you have a naturopathic consultation.

An elimination diet may be recommended to help to identify problem foods.

Treatment depends upon the individual but generally includes avoidance of allergens and repair and support of digestion with appropriate products or herbs alongside lifestyle and dietary advice

If you think you have experienced reactions to certain foods and and would like to discuss treatment options or allergy testing call in on Wednesday’s to Way of Life for a chat or phone 09 238-7806 to make an appointment for a consultation.

The Karaka Bowling Club Open Tournament was held on November 20.The greens played well and a full muster of teams from all over the Counties region attend-ed. The winners were G Bar-riball, R Barriball, S Ber-cich from Clarks Beach. Second was B Goldfinch, A Ferguson, D Waters composite team. Third was P Sinclair, G Ander-son, J Sinclair from Waiu-ku. Best Karaka team was P Moulden, A Marshall, B Holland. In club competition, the Chapman Cup, a handi-cap singles event, was won by Andrew Marshall, with Graham Jones run-ner up. Enquiries welcome to new bowlers.

Pukekohe Rangers had a good weekend recently, with two wins from two games.

The games were close with the Rangers conceding runs early, then pulling away in the final stages to win against Mana Majors 6-3, and Weymouth Bombaz 8-5. Second baseman and player of the game, Amon Tua’s first inning homerun for Weymouth scored two runs (RBIs) and got the visitors away to a good start. While Peter Jay Dando kept the scores close with some accu-rate pitching. Like his namesake and Pukekohe Soft-ball legend, Peter Kingi, Dando kept the batters guess-ing with his movement of the ball and accurate spot pitching. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough as Pukekohe managed to come back with some clinical hitting and capitalised on some unforced errors. Pukekohe pitch-er, Tiaki Te Wheoro was impressive on the mound for Pukekohe but it was the veteran Allan Webber who took home player of the game.

Mana Majors also had their chances but failed to keep the pressure on and giving up a number of runs in one inning. This time it was the father, Nick Tapiki’s turn to impress as he stood up for his team to score a run and earn himself player of the game.

Southern Pioneers had a good day at the office, in ter-rible conditions they put on a handful of runs against the Manurewa Mets to show they are a top four side to be reckoned with. Player/Coach Piwi Huriwai stood up for his team again on the pitching mound and with the bat, dominating the young Mets side taking player of the game. Mets struggled to gain composure and the weather getting the better of them, Southern Pioneers took the game 14-0.

Women’s section saw another close encounter be-tween Redhill Rockettez and Weymouth Bombaz, with young catcher Nichola Brodrick getting player of the game with 4 RBIs to her name and a great catching display behind the plate in wet conditions. Rockettez came away with the win 6-3. Player of the game for Wey-mouth was Rose Chwesik with support from player/coach Shaamila Tua in the pitcher’s circle.

Counties Manukau softball results

The young vibrant team from Ardmore Marist have seen the competition close the gap on last year’s win-ners, Takanini,) by beating them 17-8 in the upset of the round. The young side coached by Gary Dando, also play in the Auckland U19s girls competition and are top of the table in that grade. Leia Stephens con-tinues to impress for Ardmore with her hitting as does captain Nikki Walker. Nikki will captain the Counties U19 girls Rep side this year and both are ready for the next step up to NFC in Feb 2016. Former age grade rep, Stephens has been waiting for her chance to impress and has done so for her club in both grades, so she now plans to make a big impact at the U19s Nationals where they will compete against the best in the coun-try. These young ladies have a bright future in the sport, keep an eye out for them as they progress the season and onto higher honours. Sueanne Hicks was player of the game for Takanini.

Last weekend was the second Air New Zealand Queenstown International Marathon and, once again, Outlook for Life runners were there to represent Franklin.

The team joined 9000 other entrants in the an-nual event, which was set between the backdrop of the world renowned Crown and Remarkable

Outlook fitness family take on Queenstown

mountain ranges and taking in the best high-lights of the Queenstown lakes region.

The course incorpo-rates a full marathon of 42kms, a half of 21kms and a 10km run.

Outlook had runners in all divisions, with some runners completing their first ever full mara-thon – and what a place to achieve this milestone.

Nita Leader, Glennis Newson, Nicole Armit-age, Vanessa Lloyd, Sa-sha Weck, Robyn Scur-rah and Laurinda Lewis were all first time mara-thon runners, with Lau-rinda coming seventh in her category. Also Kerryn Steel, Kenny McArthur, Angela Hull, Debra Fen-ton, Caroline Treadaway and Nicola Waller com-pleted yet another Full Marathon. Half Mara-

thon runners includ-ed Kim Keary, Carron Hunter, Helen Bowden, Maree Furniss, Gina Rat-trie, Amelia Andrews and Donna Davies. Carolyn Payne ran the 10km and there were many person-al bests and fantastic re-sults all round.

“The support was just amazing, you really felt like a celebrity running with thousands of peo-ple cheering you on, es-pecially the last kilome-tre to the finish line,” ex-plained participant, Kim Keary.

After the run was com-pleted, the team had the pleasure of celebrating with bubbles with New Zealand celebrities, Kerre McIvor and Mike McRob-erts. Some of the runners finished off with a dip in the Queenstown Lake, running gear and all.
