Has not the time come when we should begin to cut down our possessions? May God help you who can do something now to make an investment in the bank of heaven?.. If you love God supremely, and your neighbour as yourself, we believe you will give tangible proofs of the same in freewill offerings... There are souls to be saved, and may you be co-workers with Jesus Christ in saving these souls for whom Christ has given His life. The Lord will bless you in the good fruit you may bear to His glory. May the same Holy Spirit which inspired the Bible take possession of your hearts, leading you to love His word, which is spirit and life. May it open your eyes to discover the things of the Spirit of God. The reason there is so much dwarfed religion today is because people have not brought practical self-denial and self-sacrifice into their lives. {CS 51}

Your Feedback, Views and Opinions

Emma’s DeskA note from

December is the season to be merry. The year is winding down, the weather is great, making for the perfect excuse for drinks and barbeques, and those highly anticipated work parties are on the calendar.

But as the drinks flow, acci-dents happen. It is time to be pro-active, make careful de-cisions, watch how much we are drinking, and, more im-portantly, organise how we are getting home from these events.

I am one of the first to admit that I know my drinks limit – and nearly always go over it. I am not proud of the fact that I contribute to New Zealand’s binge drinking culture, but I ALWAYS ensure that I have a sober driver home. Even if I haven’t drunk that much, but am feeling fatigued, I would still organise a ride home. I know I have said this before, but making it home safely is better than not making it home at all.

The official holiday period will begin at 4pm on Thurs-day December 24, 2015 and end at 6am on Tuesday Janu-ary 5, 2016.

During the 2014/2015 Christmas holiday period, there were 14 fatal crashes and

226 reported injury crashes. Those crashes resulted in 16 deaths, 78 serious injuries and 267 minor injuries, with 13 of the 16 deaths and about two-thirds of the reported injuries occurring on the open road.

The most commonly cited contributing factors for crash-es over the Christmas holiday period were losing control, travelling too fast for condi-tions, inattention, alcohol or drugs, inexperience, failed to give way or stop, did not see other party, too far left and fa-tigue. Please, do not become another statistic on New Zea-land roads.

We have another three pa-pers to go and I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing! I hope you enjoy an-other issue full of local news. What awesome attendance from our community for the Tuakau and Pukekohe Christ-mas parades. We have more photos on Facebook – be sure to check them out!

We are nearly all set for the Waiuku Christmas parade, which will be held on Satur-day at 2pm.

From what I have heard it is certainly one not to miss!

Emma

Callous act costly to vehicle This is addressed to the callous individual that decided it would be

funny to take a large rock and place it in the middle of the road near the Awhitu Rd and Sandspit Rd intersection on the night of Thursday, November 26. What you were thinking at the time is beyond me.

You will be pleased to know that your ‘joke’ worked. My son, who leaves for work early in the morning, had to go around a parked vehicle. A car was coming the other way and with the glare of its headlights he did not see the object of your mirth until too late.

His car, that he scrimped and saved for, and has only had for two weeks, is now in the garage, possibly written off due to the engine and chassis damage. It could have been much worse. The rock, had he hit it differently, could easily have punched through the floor into his feet. I hope you are satisfied. P Davenport, Waiuku

We don’t know how lucky we are My partner and I were travelling around the North Island and last

weekend stopped out at Waiuku’s amazing beach. We had not stopped long when we saw a guy walking up the beach with arms full of rubbish.

His name was James and said he fills a bag of rubbish every day. Talking to James, we learnt that he had lost his house, business and his brother in the Christchurch earthquake. Around the same time, and because of the stress, he broke up with his partner of 15 years

He said he drove around the South Island, staying in motels for about a year until his money ran out. He then bought a campervan to live in. He said he has no family left and wouldn’t know where any old friends may be as he never replaced his phone. A couple of weeks ago, when James stopped some kids smashing bottles on the beach, they decided to throw a rock through his back window.

I’m writing this in the hope that someone from the industry or the area may be able to help him out. M & A Chase

Lights out for the last time

From humble beginnings 20 years ago, Phyl and Jim have built a spectacular Christmas Display which tens of thousands have had the privilege of seeing. For the last five years the show has been held in the Waiuku War Memorial Hall, however this year will be the last one.

ll The Christmas Display lights will be going out for the last time this year, as Phyl and Jim Snedden feel it is time that they pass the joy on.

This dynamic cou-ple have been proud-ly displaying their animated collection for the past 20 years, with this year claim-ing to be even better than before.

The Christmas display originally began as a friendly ri-valry between friends. Phyl and Jim have been growing the col-lection ever since.

For the past five years, the dis-play has grown to fill the Waiuku Town Hall, with items collected from all around the world.

“We just love sharing our pas-sion of celebrating Christmas. And seeing the look on people’s faces as they walk through the door is totally worth it,” says Phyl.

However, after 20 years, Phyl and Jim feel that it is time for the biggest Christmas display in New Zealand to be passed on.

“We would like to spend more time

with our fam-ily and friends over the festive season and feel that the time is now right to offer the collec-

tion to another enthusiast that

can carry on the tra-dition.”

The collection boasts many heirloom items including Santas and decorations that have now gone out of production.

The display is a massive draw card to the town, bringing thou-sands of visitors to see the festive exhibition.

“While we are incredibly sad to have made this decision, it is time for us to share the joy with someone else that could quite possibly make it even bigger and better than ever,” say Phyl and Jim.

“The Christmas Display is available for purchase by some-one with the same passion as us”.

On the morning of Tuesday, December 1st, I was walking to Waiuku Township when I tripped and fell heavily, damaging my nose, hands, knees, and my dignity!

Seeing my plight, a very kind lady came to my rescue and kindly drove me home. Consequently I should like to nominate Whaea Raukura to be a very worthy winner of the WOW Award, and to wish her and her lovely family a very happy festive season.

Thank you, Alison Ballantyne.

Thank you to everyone for visiting our display over the last 20 years Phyl and Jim

Para-Shooting has two sport classes for athletes with an impairment of the lower limbs. The SH2 sport class, which Michael competes in, is for rifle shooters with a more severe impairment including the upper limbs, and requires them to use a shooting stand. Michael shoots at a target the size of an old 50 cent piece, with the bulls eye the size of a full stop.

Twenty-four finalists from all over New Zealand were chosen for the award categories of Art, Courage in Sport, Making a Difference, Spirit of Attitude, Junior, Youth, Employer, and the Sport Performer award, with Michael up against Sophie Pascoe and Mary Fisher.

Held at Auckland Viaduct Events Centre, the night was a spectacular black tie gala event, with the aim to shine a spotlight on the disability sector, and draw

attention to the one in four New Zealanders who live with disability.

For Michael, the award helped recognise his achievements this year.

“It shows that I’m on track for good results in Rio 2016 and it tops off what has been a busy year com-peting and training. I’m really happy and honoured to have received this award.”

Bryan Hart, a grower from Pukekohe, has been recognised for his contribution to farming in Australia and New Zealand as part of the annual Syngenta Growth Awards.

ll Bryan was one of only sev-en award winners recognised at the annual gala dinner on Tuesday night, which saw the Pukekohe resident win the Grower Productivity Award.

The Growth Awards recog-nise individual achievements in agricultural productivity, sustainability, and commit-ment to community and peo-ple.

The winners were selected from a group of 24 high-cali-bre finalists from across Aus-tralia and New Zealand. They were judged by an expert, Matt Hood, a third-generation farm-er in Queensland’s Lockyer Val-ley, and a winner of the Grow-er Productivity category in the

2014 Growth Awards, also sat on the judging panel.According to Paul Luxton, Syngenta Territory Head,

Australasia, Bryan demon-strates an unparalleled un-derstanding of market de-mand.

“Bryan’s operation is very much focused on productiv-ity and quality; he produces what the market wants,” Paul said.

“Bryan has taken on board a lot of professional career experience in New Zealand and overseas, putting it to use in an on-farm role to minimise production loss-es and differentiate products to meet customer expecta-tions.

He has good long-term in-tegrated pest management strategies and biological control which complement his responsible and efficient crop protection and input management programs.”

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue. 2 Peter 1:3.

Quote; “Jesus is the ladder to heaven, . . . and God calls upon us to mount this ladder. But we cannot do this while we load ourselves down with earthly treasures. We wrong ourselves when we place our convenience and personal advantages before the things of God. There is no salvation in earthly possessions or surroundings. A man is not exalted in God’s sight, or accredited by Him as possessing goodness, because he has earthly riches. If we gain a genuine experience in climbing, . . . we must leave every hindrance behind. Those who mount must place their feet firmly on every round of the ladder. We are saved by climbing round after round of the ladder, looking to Christ, clinging to Christ, mounting step by step to the height of Christ, so that He is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. Faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity are the rounds of this ladder.

Courage, fortitude, faith, and implicit trust in God’s power to save are needed. These heavenly graces do not come in a moment; they are acquired by the experience of years. But every sincere and earnest seeker will become a partaker of the divine nature. His soul will be filled with intense longing to know the fullness of that love which passes knowledge. As he advances in the divine life, he will be better able to grasp the elevated, ennobling truths of the Word of God, until, by beholding, he becomes changed, and is enabled to reflect the likeness of his Redeemer. Child of God, angels are watching the character you develop, they are weighing your words and actions; therefore take heed to your ways, . . . prove whether you are in the love of God.

To love God supremely and our neighbour as ourselves is genuine sanctification.”

Pauls admonition is further developed in this verse, “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” Romans 14:17. The promises are, “A new heart will I give you”; “I will put my Spirit within you.” This provision is made for us through the merit of Christ’s righteousness: “And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever.” Isaiah 32:17. Those who experience the change spoken of in these words will find that their restlessness and disquietude are all taken away, and they will find rest unto their souls in Christ. His merit, His righteousness, are imputed to the believing soul, and the believer has inward peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.

The Lord would have all His sons and daughters happy, peaceful, and obedient. . . .

Happiness that is sought from selfish motives, outside of the path of duty, is ill-balanced, fitful, and transitory; it passes away, and the soul is filled with loneliness and sorrow; but there is joy and satisfaction in the service of God; the Christian is not left to walk in uncertain paths; he is not left to vain regrets and disappointments. If we do not have the pleasures of this life, we may still be joyful in looking to the life beyond.

But even here Christians may have the joy of communion with Christ; they may have the light of His love, the perpetual comfort of His presence. Every step in life may bring us closer to Jesus, may give us a deeper experience of His love, and may bring us one step nearer to the blessed home of peace.

There is peace in believing, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Believing brings peace, and trusting in God brings joy. Believe, believe! my soul says, believe. Rest in God. He is able to keep that which you have committed to His trust. He will bring you off more than conqueror through Him who hath loved you.” {FLB 120-121}

Will God ever let us down, Definitely NO! we stop him from continuously working in our lives, we often turn off his permission to act on our behalf. Let us consider this quote; “We have nothing to fear for the future except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us; and His teaching in our past history.” {TM 31} This is the Faith and Trust part of the Christian walk, just listen to the Testimony of people who have let God lead and have been obedient, it is most encouraging.

Here is one example; A chap was captured by rebel soldiers, after a time they were divided them into two groups, his group was told that they were being released and sent home in the morning. The Holy Spirit told a Christian to swap positions with an Old Man in the other team. He refused, and kept refusing until the Holy Spirit stopped talking. Next morning they were herded out onto the area, all expecting release, only to be told that they were messing with their minds and the other team went home last night. This Christian had to endure many many months more toil and hardship, because of his disobedience as God wished him to be

released and freed. We have this admonition in 2 Timothy 4:2

“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” And I think our man in the story wished that he had been quick to respond when the Spirit led. Dear Reader, please like me, will you resolve to be quick and responsive, fast to unload this worlds baggage and the progressively climb the ladder to perfection and closer and closer to Jesus Christ.

ll Mary and Peter Perry have stood the test of time, and recently celebrated a milestone that needed to be recognised - 67 years of marriage. When asked by granddaughter, Mary, if it was love at first sight her nana’s response was ‘I don’t know, I suppose so.’

“Maybe not the most romantic response, howev-er, for anyone that knows them it’s clear that love-at-first-sight or not, you would struggle to find another couple that are better suited to one another,” says granddaughter, Mary Perry, who was named after her grandmother. Dating 67 years ago was quite different to the way it’s done today. Described as a very tradi-tional affair, they weren’t allowed to move in with one another before marriage. Peter met Mary at a dance in the Oddfellows Hall, in Waiuku. They danced the night away then towards the end, Peter asked if Mary want-ed a ride home, that was after first gaining permission from her brother.

“When it was time for my granddad to pop the ques-tion, he asked her dad for permission, with a response that wasn’t quite what he expected. He was told to wait until she turned 21 then her dad would be more oblig-ing to give her hand away,” laughs Mary. On October 29, 1948, they were officially married at St Georges Church in Epsom, as it was half way between the two families. “Most of nana’s relations were in Helensville and his in Waiuku. Then it was off to One Tree Hill for the reception.”

Both spent their early married lives working hard on the farm in Waiuku. Then two to three years later they had a baby boy, then a daughter followed not long after. Their small family continued to grow with grandchil-dren and great grandchildren as the years passed by.

After never spending an anniversary apart, this year saw Peter in hospital with a bad back, meaning that it

If you weren’t able to make the Tuakau and Pukekohe Christmas Parades over the weekend, never fear, as the NZ Steel Waiuku Christmas Parade is set to be bigger and better than ever.

ll To be held on Saturday, De-cember 12, the town is set to come alive with festivities. From 11am, Bowen Street will be closed to traf-fic to host 40 market stalls, selling arts and crafts, clothing and gifts, while the town centre will show-case entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. This year’s theme for the parade is ‘Anything Goes,’ and with over 30 floats entered, Waiuku Town Manager, Sharlene Druyven, says there is going to be huge variety on display.

“With this year’s theme, we ac-tually don’t know what the floats

are going to look like, mak-ing it an even more exciting day. I really hope the com-munity comes out to support this fantastic event.”

From recreating a birthday cake and community super he-roes to what Christmas means as a five year old, all of the floats have been left to the imagi-nation of their creators. The parade starts at 2pm, with Queen Street closed from 1pm to 3pm, and King Street closed during the time the parade is on. Please Note: Bowen Street will closed from 9:30am. Sunday, No-vember 13, will be the rain day, but there will be no markets, only the parade.

police reportBy Sergeant Graeme Wood, Waiuku Police

EMERGENCY: FIRE, AMBULANCE AND POLICE

CALL 111

Well it is entering the busy time of the year, there will be lots of peo-ple out and about getting into the festive season. Which means people will be consuming more alcohol than usual and more homes unattended either with going away or out visiting.

Be vigilant for suspi-cious cars or persons. People are busy, they will forget to lock cars or houses, leave valu-ables in cars etc. This provides easy picking for the thieves and burglars out there, so they will just saunter around looking for the easy opportuni-ties.

As I say if you have to look at a person or vehi-cle a couple of times and think to yourself I won-der what they are up to you should be giving the Police a call.

Be careful or some bur-gling thief may be doing their Christmas shopping at your house.

It is getting near that time of the year when we are all looking ahead to our Christmas holidays. One thing we should be doing is planning for the safety and security of our homes while we are away.

Remember when you go away make sure that you lock and secure your

homes, lock or put away any items outside that a burglar could use as a tool to break into your house such garden tools etc. If you have a burglar alarm ensure that you use it.

If you can have some-one, friends, family, neighbours visit your house to check on it. They could even open and close curtains, turn some lights on at night, park a car in your drive-way every now and then just to create the impres-sion someone is home.

Cancel any papers and have someone collect mail and clear your let-terbox.

Make sure you leave contacts details for you should something hap-pen so you can contacted.

From the December 1 through to the January 31, Police have a Safer Sum-mer Campaign to ensure the roads are safe for you. There is a threshold of four kilometres an hour on the speed limit, which Police will be strictly en-forcing, and will have no tolerance for those flout-ing the law.

This will be accompa-nied by a continued fo-cus on drink driving, re-straints and other unsafe behaviour.

Be safe.Cheers Woody

pioneer Wooden toys are on the moveWhat started as a business inside a garage, Pioneer Wooden Toys has since grown into its new premises, located at units G and H, 22 Constable Rd, Waiuku.

Emma [email protected]

ll Originally kick-started and transformed by Murray Neales 35 years ago, Bryan Millar was recent-ly given the option to purchase the popular business, an opportunity which he jumped at.

“Murray saw the potential that it had and helped to take it to where it is today. I just happened to stum-ble across that the business was for sale and thought that this opportu-nity may not happen again. I had the choice to either keep working for a corporate company or some-one else, or work for myself and live the dream.”

The Waiuku resident has always had a passion for woodwork, and could not resist buying the business.

Pioneer Wooden Toys has a great reputation for manufacturing top quality heirlooms, a statement that Bryan is extyremely proud of.

“Not only that, but I use recycled materials. Rimu, kauri, pine, we are always on the lookout for timber that we can use to make our toys. So not

only are they durable and af-fordable, but sustainable as well.”

From dolls’ clothes lines to sandpit diggers, Bryan’s favou-rite type of work is customis-ing toys, and says that creating them is incredibly fun.

“I have a seven year old daughter and have just fin-ished building her fairyland furniture which she just loves. Wood makes such worthwhile

gifts that last a lifetime. “Seeing the looks on peo-

ple’s faces when they come to collect their items is always a joy.”

The unique business is also established on social media, with photos of the latest cre-ations being uploaded regu-larly.

Nowhere to hide

Fat is not who I am, it does not define me as a person, it is what I am due to my bad choices and lack of education.

Steve Douglas

ll You can’t start a journey of self discovery and change with-out making choices. I love the Nike slogan ‘Just do it’, it makes everything seem so simple and uncomplicated. Want to loose weight - just do it. You and I know it is not that simple, you must first make a committed decision to do something. Then based on that decision to loose weight, reduce sugar, improve yourself, get fit or even quit smoking. Put a action plan in place and then just do it. Everyone has advice for fat people and nine out of ten thin people will tell you to stop moaning and just do something about it. Stop eating junk it is that easy.

I am always grateful for advice

and looking at my weight may-be I should lis-ten, but it is not that simple ei-ther. Over the last week I have removed all sug-ar and refined carbohydrates from my diet and replaced them with fruit, vegetables and

salads. On Thursday night my broccoli was screaming ‘eat me’ and my head was saying ‘no way José’. I had to remind myself of the decision I had made to eat healthy and it was still not easy but I got the broccoli down screaming and shouting.

This got me thinking how com-mitted am I really, have I made a committed decision to succeed, and do I have a plan to fall back on.

‘Failure is not an option,’ is just a set of random words until you ensure there is no way of back-ing out. The US Navy Seals will burn their boats when they come ashore so the only way is forward. Are you willing to make a commit-ted decision to change and then burn your boat on the shore, back yourself and success proof your decision.

I am. Why not join me. Send your comments to me: [email protected]

Lynn and Emma both agree that they still can’t remember saying that they would join Steve and his quest to eat less sugar. This week has been nothing but an uphill struggle for the two pud -puds.

ll We began our journey last Tuesday by going cold turkey. The withdrawals had hit by the afternoon and I have never felt so tired – all we wanted was a quick fix, sugar hit in the way of a chocolate bar or a can of coke. A piece of fruit had to suffice.

The following day it became a massive feat to drag ourselves out of bed, and the next couple of nights were beyond restless. By the end of the week, I found myself not needing as much sleep as I use to, and have start-ed waking up around 6am. This has been described as a miracle as I am usually the person to be left to sleep; otherwise you are faced with a death sentence.

Lynn and I also decided to shop for our lunches for the week. We spent over an hour reading the labels to see just how processed all our favou-rite foods were.

The amount of sugar and words I couldn’t pronounce, let alone knowing what they were, was astounding.

This week, we both plan to have a couple of recipes to try

and will make sure that we have our ingredients written out be-fore shopping!

What we couldn’t believe was how ridiculously expen-sive it was to eat healthy. I now understand why people just go for the quick and easy fix – a pie from the bakery costs less than a handful of nuts.

For example, Lynn went to purchase a packet of healthy, vegetable chips - $7.99, yet the other range which had an exor-bitant amount of fat, sugar and carbohydrates - $1.99. You can see why we have an obesity epi-demic in New Zealand.

I am disappointed to an-nounce that we cheated on Sunday. I made a trip to the takeaways after contributing to New Zealand’s binge drink-ing society, while Lynn gorged on ice cream.

We both felt shame and dis-gust. Shame for eating such processed food, and disgust in not only the way it tasted, but the way it made us feel, as we suffered from the consequenc-es hours after devouring the food.

Not eating processed food isn’t really the hard part; it is try-ing to dedicate your time for the preparation of meals.

This week, we hope to be more proactive, as well as posi-tive, to the approach of healthy eating. A little bit more exercise won’t hurt either!

Waiuku awarded Caltex grant

Waiuku Primary School has been selected as one of 27 New Zealand schools to receive a share of $100,000 raised by Caltex customers in this year’s Fuel Your School initiative.

ll The grant will contribute toward the school’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math-ematics) curriculum, in particular in developing the enterprise and environment programme.

More than 220 deserving applications from prima-ry, intermediate, secondary and area schools across the country were received by the Royal Society of New Zealand, who is working with Caltex for the initiative.

Dr Andrew Cleland, Chief Executive of the Royal So-ciety of New Zealand, said, “We were impressed with the quality of applications. We received over $900,000 of funding requests across the programme, making the decision process a competitive one. “We look for-ward to seeing how this extra funding will help Waiuku kids as their school develops its unique STEM-based activities over the coming months,” Dr Cleland said.

Waiuku Primary School Principal, Mr Simon Drew-ery, said, “We are very grateful and delighted to receive this generous award from Caltex New Zealand, which will help develop the enterprise and environment pro-gramme at our school.

The students designed an award-winning engineer-ing project based on a mini-golf course, built and op-erated as a business in the community. This unique project will provide hands-on learning in a real-life context, with many exciting opportunities to design, create, build and operate, all conceived and completed by the students themselves.”

ll Brooke and Bailey of Tuakau couldn’t believe that both of them won the award, with Bailey being announced in Novem-ber as the recipient of the overall academ-ic excellence in Year 13 at the college’s an-nual prizegiving evening. Brooke took out the award in 2013.

“I saw what she was able to do and thought; let’s see how far I can take my studies as well,” Bailey laughs.

Brooke, who has just finished her sec-ond year studying a Bachelor of Business Analysis, majoring in Accounting, at Waikato University, explained that while Bailey is competitive, they both are com-pletely different when it came to their subject options in school.

“Bailey is definitely more science based while I enjoyed the business based sub-jects. So while we have both taken out the award, we definitely are different with our studies and some characteristics,” laughs Brooke.

The award is based on the quality of credits and results from internal assess-ments throughout the whole year, with the DUX students being presented with a Toshiba laptop. Bailey was also award-

ed an Otago University Dux scholarship worth $5000, which she says will be a huge help with her studies next year.

“I will hopefully be accepted into first year Health Science, as I would really like to complete a Bachelor of Dental Surgery.”

Both girls agreed that achieving the award came down to hard work invest-ed throughout the year. While Brooke is beginning an internship for Price Wa-terhouse Coopers over summer, Bailey has just passed her restricted licence and found a job, and plans to save as much money as possible for university next year.

Bailey and Brooke Gregory both took out the DUX Award at Tuakau College

within two years of one another.

Eden Christian Acad-emy held their annu-al School Ball at the Tuakau Union Parish Hall on Saturday, No-vember 21, with the theme ‘Paris, city of Lights.’

The theme was cho-sen by the senior stu-dent committee weeks before the terrorist at-tacks in Paris. In light of the attacks, the school

dedicated the evening to the people in Paris by reading poems and let-ters written by their stu-dents, which will be sent to a Christian School in France.

Principal, Willem van Rensburg, would like to thank everyone who helped make the eve-ning such a success. Pictured are David Bid-dick and Zoe Vincent.

newsbitesMerry Christmas Franklin!

ll Christmas is fast approaching and the festive sea-son is in full swing! With many of us putting on events or giving gifts to our staff, customers and suppliers we thought it would be topical to remind you that most, if not all, of these costs are tax deductible. Client gifts (including food, alcohol and vouchers) are 100% de-ductible, whereas entertainment is usually only 50% deductible. “So what’s the difference?” you ask! Well, a gift is something that is given away for the recipients private enjoyment, for example a gift basket or bottle of wine. However, where you or your staff are involved the expense is entertainment.

There are four main areas where entertainment is 50% deductible: corporate boxes, holiday accommo-dation, pleasure craft, and food and drink (as per the following rules); Food and drink is 50% deductible when consumed at any of the above or in the follow-ing specific circumstances: Business meals consumed away from the business premises, food and drink con-sumed on the business premises at a party, reception, celebration meal or other social function (including after work drinks or a Christmas party). Note: this does not apply to everyday meals provided in a staff cafeteria.

Any event or function away from business prem-ises for the purpose of staff morale or goodwill i.e. Fri-day night ‘shouts’ at the pub. In an area of the business premises reserved for use at the time by senior staff and not open to other staff (such as an executive din-ing room used to entertain clients). The entertainment rules can be quite a grey area so do not hesiatate to contact Campbell Tyson if you would like clarification.

GIVING OLD MONEY NEW VALUE

Over 250kg of old money collected

ll Along with the other Lions Clubs throughout New Zealand, the Lions Club of Waiuku adopted the Na-tional Lions Project, Heads Up for Kids, in July 2014.

The aim was to collect and remove as many out of date coins and foreign coins from circulation as possi-ble. These coins were redundant and were unusable for normal purchasing, but the Reserve Bank had agreed to offer the Lions face value as a project to assist Lions projects aimed at children.

“In Waiuku, we enlisted the local banks, Gary Pye’s 100%, New World’s Lotto counter, and Action OPD/Deed Printing’s assistance. They agreed to display our distinctive red tins with the Heads Up for Kids logo, and combined with promotion via The Post, the com-munity was informed and took action,” explained Pe-ter Hook, Project Convenor for Heads Up for Kids and member of the Waiuku Lions.

“It was our aim locally to see if we could collect 250kg by the end of November, and on Monday, November 23, 2015, we achieved it, with some local Lions hand-ing in some old coins from their homes.”

The 3kgs handed in brought their total collected from the public of Waiuku to 250.6kg.

“Thank you everybody for your contribution to a great cause, but there is still a lot more out there, and the collection points are still ready for any more you can find.”

Always on the lookout for something to do, Fi Leaning has created ReMaterialise, a business that is not only hugely beneficial for the environment, but keeps the stay at home mum preoccupied during school hours.

ll After never want-ing to throw them away, the Waiuku resident has learnt the art of making reusable shopping bags out of single use plastic bags, something she says is quite ironic.

“ W h o w o u l d ’ v e thought I would be making shopping bags out of throw away plas-tic bags? I just couldn’t throw them away af-ter seeing the damage that they do, and re-searched where I could send them to be recy-

cled. I then found my-self watching ways to fuse them together and create recycled items, and I thought, I could do this,” says Fi.

Three years later, and Fi is not only creating bags, but has since di-versified into wallets, produce bags, note-books, coin purses and beeswax food covers and wraps – all with the aim of trying to create solutions for disposable products.

The bags take 40 plas-tic bags and just under four hours of labour to make, and can carry up to 15kgs, making great grocery bags. Fi can al-so customise the bags to unique and personal themes.

“It is very tedious, and there just aren’t enough hours in the day, but I feel great about what

I am doing. We came to New Zealand from the UK for that clean green image, but as the years go on, it is becoming less of that. We, as a nation, are too dispos-able and too lazy; how hard is it to wash your spoon? It is so disappointing to see.”

Fi now has people regu-larly donating plastic bags to her cause, and even has local businesses contribut-ing to her cause.

“We have so far recycled over 55,000 plastic bags,

and every scrap or item that we don’t use is collect-ed by a recycling company in Auckland. You can find us at several markets, and on Facebook, our website or twitter.” Fi states that ReMaterialise is more of an advocate for sustain-ability and creating a use-able lifestyle rather than a business. “My business will be a success when there is no more plastic for me to use.” To find out more, visit www.rematerialise.co.nz

ll While summer is a great time to clean out the house and garage, the volunteers at St Andrews Op-portunity Shop in Waiuku are hav-ing a hard time sorting through the rubbish that is dumped at their facilities.

While the team are so grateful of the donations that they receive, there are certain people that are ruining it for others by dumping off junk that should put straight in the bin.

“We do receive wonderful and quality things from our com-munity, but people are treating us more like a dumping ground. Dirty clothes, broken applianc-es, contributing to items that we spend a lot of time sorting,” says volunteer, Rosalie.

“We ask not to have items left after hours and our signage re-flects this. However, there are

continual sacks and boxes of rubbish that is left outside our doors regularly.”

By leaving items after hours, donations are at the risk of pilfering. In some cases, items not only end up weather damaged, but have been strewn across the car park.

The ladies all volunteer their time at the store, with funds raised through the sale of items going to charity, with special donations made to lo-cal organisations within the community.

“It is frustrating and we would just like to ask the com-munity to please, sort through your items and be consider-ate when donating goods, as we just can’t be treated like a dump anymore.”

Gardening

with RuthMy garden is a mess!

CitrusOur citrus are out doing themselves this year and the lemons and orang-es are bearing very well. I will have to make some limoncello for Christ-mas. I also use lemon honey on my pavlovas which helps to bite through the sweetness of the meringue. See recipe on this page.

We took two weeks off to be Enrichment speakers on The Dawn Princess as she cruised from Sydney around New Zealand and ten back to Sydney. We had a fabulous time and our talks were well received. Who knows it may become a new hobby.

ll While we were away, apparently, there was quite a bit of rain. The gar-den is a mass of weeds. I am going to spend the next two weeks filling the compost bin! But I must say that amongst all the weeds there are some sur-prises. The broad beans are producing well, as are the cabbages I plant-ed back in late July.

After I have found the soil again in the garden, it will be time to plant out more melons that are growing in the glasshouse. Also continue to plant salad greens and radish.

Sow beans and peas (snow and sweet) into the garden, but do not over water them at first as the seed will rot in the ground. This is a hint I was told by a fellow pas-senger while we were away. Courgettes can go in now, and for those of you who are lucky enough to have planted some earlier, you may be almost ready to har-vest. Beetroot planted now will be ready around March. Either buy small plants from your nursery or plant seed directly into the garden.

Mulch TimeMulch around your plants now, if you have not already done so. This will help to retain moisture during the dry months to come. But be sure not to mulch right up to the stems or trunks as it may cause stem rot. Try to water melon varieties and tomatoes from the ground, avoid the leaves. This will help to prevent mildew forming and killing the plants. I have been told that spray-ing with a diluted milk mixture will help prevent mildew, but I have not tried it myself.

June’s Easy PavlovaBeat 6 room temperature egg whites until stiff. Add 2 cups sugar, 6 Tbsp boiling water, 1 dsp white vine-gar, 1 dsp cornflour, 1 tsp vanilla essence. Beat for 20 minutes on high speed. Meanwhile preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Line a tray with baking paper and spray lightly with non stick oil. Pile the meringue onto the tray and either make a small well in the centre or flick with a knife to form peaks. You do whatever you like to make the shape but it must be fairly thick (about 6cm at the thickest part). Place in preheated oven and leave for 10 minutes, then turn the oven off and allow it to cool completely. At least three hours or overnight is best. If you made a well in the centre it can be filled easily with fruit and cream. Or as I

often do, with a lemon honey mix. Take the egg yolks and beat them lightly with 2 dsp cornflour. In a pot put the juice of six lemons and the zest of two. Add ½ cup of water, 1 cup of sugar and bring to the boil until the sugar has dissolved. Take off the heat and add some of the hot liquid to the egg yolks and mix well. This will help to stop the eggs curdling. Add the egg mixture back into the pot and simmer gently to thicken. Allow to cool and either pour into the well of your pavlova just before serving or place in a jug beside it and your guests can add if they want.

crops, Do not plant.• 6-7 Sow root crops • 8-13 Cultivate and fertilise in preparation to

parts above the ground.• 24-28 Cultivate only. Full moon December

26. Take a rest and enjoy Christmas!• 29-31 Sow root crops

Beautiful BloomsThe roses are blooming beautifully, but nothing like the ones in the Wellington rose gardens. I spotted one that I just have to get. It is called Honky Tonk Blues and has a wonder-ful sent and heaps of blooms. It will go well with Blackberry Nip that I have been nurturing for a couple of years.

DianthusThe dianthus are flowering well in their dry spot under the eaves on the west of our house. The perfume is quite heady in the evening and wafts through the open windows.

Hunua flourishing after pest blitzFlourishing foliage, an abundance of seeds and forest ‘fruit’ along with signs of new life in the kōkako population are the first signs of a successful pest control programme in the Hunua Ranges this year.

ll The first round of post-oper-ational monitoring, following the aerial application of 1080 over a 21,500-hectare area, is complete, with rat and possum numbers at an all-time low.

Biodiversity manager and op-erational lead for the project, Ra-chel Kelleher, says the latest result numbers are significantly lower than the possum and rat targets set for the project.

“The target set for this opera-tion for possums across the whole treatment area and rats within the intensively pest controlled kõkako

management areas (KMA) was to get densities below five per cent. This means that fewer than five possums would be caught, or few-er than five tracking tunnels would have rat footprints, for every 100 trap or tunnel nights.”

Within the 1150-hectare kõka-ko management area, which has been monitored twice since the first bait application in August, no rats or mice have been record-ed on either occasion in any of the 100 tracking tunnels.

For the next few months visi-tors to the Hunua Ranges must be aware they are entering an area treated with a toxin. Signs will re-main in place until early 2016. This caution period is one of the opera-tional requirements of using a tox-in like 1080. It is a reminder to visi-tors that they may encounter bait that hasn’t yet broken down or pest animal carcasses.

The new barn to house Waiuku Museum’s agricultural exhibits is nearly ready to open.

Billie Douglasll It will house all the agricul-tural exhibits and artifacts pre-viously contained in the main building. These will include a mock up of a shearing shed, a milking shed, a blacksmith and a collection of old agricultural machinery and carts.

Richard Garvey, president of the Museum Society, believes that the new barn will be of great value to the museum. It will not only provide a location for the new display, but will al-so free up valuable space in the main museum building.

“In the past we’ve had all our agricultural equipment crammed into the back of the museum, which hasn’t been an ideal set up for viewing. By moving all our agricultur-al equipment out to the new barn, we can make better use of the space at the back of the museum.” The Museum Soci-ety is hoping to place several lit-

tle shops at the back of the main museum, possibly a printing works, a shoe shop, a grocery shop or a chemist.

Although only recently con-structed, the barn has always been planned for the muse-um. It was one of the agreed buildings to be placed on the Tamakae Reserve along with Hartmann House, Pollok Cot-tage and several other histor-ical buildings. The barn has been built with the generous help of The Lions Club, The Rotary Club, and Simon Brown of Brown and Brown Builders. Volunteers have been a vital part in the process, with sever-al working bees contributing to its construction. The volun-teers who work tirelessly ev-ery Wednesday morning, are now slowly moving the exhib-its from the main building to the barn.

Sunday, December 13, the museum is hosting a private preview and afternoon tea for the volunteers. It is hoped the barn will be open to the public sometime in the New Year.

Thunder set to hit Pukekohe next weekendThat time of year is upon us, when crowds of New Zealand motorsport fanatics descend on Pukekohe Park Raceway to enjoy their annual Thunder in the Park experience.

ll Thunder in the Park brings the widest variety of club motorsport from across New Zealand to Pukekohe for an action-

packed weekend of non-stop bumper to bumper racing. This year’s event is all about the Muscle, with rumbling V8s filling an exciting proportion of the weekend, as entrants from the Central, Produc-tion and Northern Muscle Car Clubs take to the grid.

Bang-for-buck Thun-der in the Park is ev-ery petrol head’s dream weekend, with an adult

weekend pass costing just $20 (available at www.thunderinthepark.com or at the gate).

In true Thunder in the Park style, this year’s event is free for under 16s making it a great op-portunity for young pet-rol heads to get up close with some of their most admired race cars.

This year’s event not only offers great value for

Lawson looks forward to hometown debut

comes here once this season so I really want to do well this weekend.”

It’s been an astonishing start to mo-tor racing for the tiny teenager. Lawson currently lies fourth in the hotly con-tested championship series, and he’s ly-ing within striking range of the leaders.

For SpeedSport Scholarship co-founder and Lawson’s driving coach, Dennis Martin, his results are coming from hard work and dedication both on and off the race track.

“The way he works with the team is first-class,” said Dennis.

“Liam’s first race win was no fluke. That was a very mature drive. He sim-ply out-drove his opposition.”

The SpeedSport Scholarship provides a season racing in a Formula First car under the guidance and tuition of Mar-tin’s Sabre Motorsport Team, as well as a personalised race suit, boots and racing gloves from Chicane.

money with over 250 cars in action; an extended Saturday timetable takes twilight racing right into the evening with 6 x 33 minute races from the 2K Cup giving fans an extra injection of hair-raising racing.

While seasoned fa-natics gravitate towards classes like Central Mus-cle Cars, the meeting al-so caters towards some of New Zealand’s most talented up and coming drivers, with classes like Formula First and the Pro 7s (a series specifically for rotary-powered Mazda RX7s) representing an excellent cost-friendly channel for young driv-ers to establish them-

selves and learn more about the sport.

Thunder in the Park can be seen as a nod to New Zealand’s rich mo-torsport history, with models of race car from almost every significant era of Kiwi racing front-ing up for an event which cannot be missed. “We’ve worked hard to ensure that there’s a class of rac-ing for every type of fan with our young guns and future of Kiwi Motors-port in the single seaters, through to the beautiful-ly presented V8 Muscle Cars, and can’t wait to see everyone back at Puke-kohe Park raceway next weekend,” Event Man-ager, Deborah Day states.

Local teenager Liam Lawson is look-ing forward to making his hometown motor racing debut this weekend, when the Hi-Q New Zealand Formula First championship comes to the Pukekohe race circuit.

The current SpeedSport Scholarship rookie driver will start the meeting fresh from his maiden race car win at Taupo last month and is hoping to repeat that form over this weekend’s three champi-onship races.

“To win a race at home would be really special,” said Liam, who will have plen-ty of support track-side from his family and Pukekohe High School friends.

Liam has only contested six races over two rounds since moving into single-seater race cars from a successful kart-ing career and has so far scored two po-dium finishes.

To prepare for the motor racing this weekend, Lawson drove another For-mula First race car during a test day at Pukekohe recently, the first time he’d driven on his hometown race circuit.

“I’ve been around Puke before in a couple of cars as a passenger but this was the first time I’ve driven it,” said Liam.

“I really like the track layout and I can’t wait for the racing. The series only

First Race 10 amGate Entry $10.00 12 and under Free

Last Tuesday saw a record number of players take to the green in the annual COVIC Vedi Veni Vici Christmas Classic golf tournament.

Held at the Waiuku Golf Club, over 100 players took part in the annual event, which fundraised for an incredible cause, Michael Johnson’s Para-lympic Campaign.Michael is a Paralympic Shooter, and has his sights set on Rio 2016. This year alone, he has tak-en out some phenomenal results on the world stage. Organised by the renowned Graham Jones, Mi-chael was blown away by the support. “I really appreciate people taking an interest in my sport, let alone helping out with fundraising. Every little bit counts, and it was a real privilege to be able to showcase what I do.”Graham Jones saw an article on Michael in the newspaper, and thought that he would be a great cause to fundraise for.“Not only do we get to play a great game of golf, but we are able to fundraise and recognise a lo-cal sports person who is achieving great things,” said Graham. With the support of sponsors, including many local businesses, every player came away with a prize and Michael was presented with a four figured cheque.“Every bit counts, and this donation will be a mas-sive help. I would really like to thank everyone who came out and supported the event,” says Michael.

Waiuku Swimming Club is about to kick off its 50th year of summer swimming at the Whiteside Pool.

The club is in a healthy position thanks to the

support of the local com-munity. “We have as our mission a desire to build on the strong base that we have established and offer a wider range of swimming opportunities to support our commu-

Over the last weekend Pukekohe Swimming Club had a team of 29 swimmers contest the Auckland Junior Swim-ming champs. This meet had swimmers from all round New Zealand competing and also three teams from overseas. The team from Pukeko-he Swimming Club per-formed brilliantly com-ing in 5th overall in the points table. The stand out perform-ers were Zeal Jones and Janaye Burns. Zeal con-tested 12 races in the ten year Boys category and won 11 gold medals and one silver medal. He also improved his person-al best time in 11 of the races.Janaye contested 12 rac-es in the ten year Girls category and won nine gold medals and three silver medals.Overall the Pukekohe swimmers improved their personal best times in 68% of their races. There were also 18 extra swims qualified for the New Zealand Junior Na-tional Championships.

Graham Jones and Paralympic shooter, Michael Johnson, at the Waiuku Golf Club last Tuesday.

PSC also had three new swimmers join the NZ junior’s qualifiers, Olivia Nichol, Amelia De Latour and Thomas Murray. Meg Grey qualified for Div 2 Championships in Invercargill.Swimmers who had 100% personal best times were Max Brears, Zahn Cooney, Thomas Mur-ray, Jacob Kearns, Olivia Nichol, Jaime Skilton, Darnika Howe, Abbie Gibson and Aria Murray.

Achieving a top ten plac-ing at the meet were; Sam Belsham, Max Brears, Janaye Burns, Zahn Cooney, Scarlett Gold-sworthy, Darnika Howe, Zeal Jones, Keara Kier-nan Erb, Thomas Murray, Abby Swain and Robson Wallace. It was a long meet but all of the swimmers per-formed well and sup-ported each other. They were a credit to their club. Coaches Jim, Maki

and Sue were delighted with their achievements. We had a lot of young-er swimmers that were competing at this level for the first time. They re-ally stepped up and most of them achieved a top 16 placing. We were delight-ed with their effort, their team spirit and their fo-cus. The coaches are ex-cited to see their progress at the Counties meets coming up over the next two months.

Swimmers place in top five at Champs

Club begins 50 years of swimming at pool

nity. This would include training for competitive swimmers, preparation for School Group day and Zone swimming events, general fitness and tech-nique tuition for triath-letes and ocean swim-ming competitors,” says Anita Manning.

Their coaching is headed by Jacqui Wal-degrave, who has a pas-sion for swimming hav-ing been a competitive swimmer and is current-ly an active surf lifeguard and ocean swimming competitor.

The first club night for this season will be on Tuesday, December 15, and will commence at 4pm. The club will be offering a free fun night and the opportunity to register.

Screaming trackside can leave sporting parents a little ‘horse’, but sometimes it’s actually not such a bad thing, particularly if they don’t need to pony up the cash right off the bat. JON RAWLINSON at Rural Living explains why.

By Jon Rawlinson Rural Living magazine

It’s an all-too-familiar scene: in spare room cupboards, ga-rages and sheds everywhere, the ghosts of once-great sport-ing hopes linger in the form of wrecked rackets, battered boots, forlorn footballs and the like. And these collections of equipment, left behind as young minds regularly switch focus of their athletic endeav-ours, can prove quite expensive for parents.

Fortunately, when it comes to harness racing, it appears this doesn’t need to be the case, and no lonely ponies need be put prematurely out to pasture.

“Sometimes it’s just not vi-able to have ponies at home – particularly for those who live in town – so we always have club ponies for members to race,” explains Franklin Kidz Kartz president, Gary Noakes. “We have all the gear real-ly, then if kids enjoy it, we en-courage parents to purchase their own equipment.”

Established approximately eight years ago, Kidz Kartz now encompasses clubs throughout the country.

Primarily designed to teach youngsters (aged 6-17) about harness driving, training, rac-ing and care of miniature hors-es and ponies, the clubs are fo-cused on fun as well as offering an introduction to the sport.

“Mostly it’s about build-ing confidence and having a good time, but there are a lot of emerging senior drivers who began with Kidz Kartz. It defi-

nitely gives children a sol-id handle on what harness racing is like and whether or not they want to go further with it.”

Gary’s daughters (with wife, Michelle) – Hannah (6) and Holly (12) – are keen club members, as is their cousin, Caitlin (11). The for-mer trainer and driver adds that the girls could, one day, follow in his footsteps.

“We became involved with Kidz Kartz about five or six years ago. I have a background in harness rac-ing and the kids were inter-ested in horses and ponies. We went along for a few nights and our involvement went from there.

“Hannah has been driv-ing at home for a wee while, and just starting training with the club. All three are good little riders and driv-ers; and they absolutely love horses. I think they’ll be involved in the indus-try in some way or another; we’ll just have to see if their interest carries on, but I’m sure it will.”

Although some horse sense, such as that pos-sessed by Gary’s girls, goes a long way at Kidz Kartz, even equine neophytes are well

catered for, he confirms. “We’ve had kids who

know almost nothing at all about horses, so training starts from scratch. If they have a general idea about riding, they’ll pick up driv-ing with no problems at all, but the whole idea is that we provide an introduction, so experience isn’t neces-sary to at least give it a go.”

In addition to races – held from spring until autumn, primarily at Alexandra Park – Kidz Kartz provides club nights closer to the home straight.

“We race most Friday nights, usually at Alexan-dra Park, with a few races on the gallops track in Puke-kohe too. And we have club nights where members get together at Franklin Park and teach the kids how to drive,” he says.

“We also run three-day courses, where we go through everything from top to bottom, which they need to pass to race. Last year, we had some kids who were really nervous and shy, but by the time the course was over, you couldn’t keep them quiet about it! It’s great for their confidence as much as anything.”
