Guild Meeting Dates December 2015

President's Message December 2015

Greetings Guild Members,

2015 has been an amazing year for the Guild. In addition to a successful Quilt Show, a variety of interesting programs with well attended workshops, production of hundreds of community service quilts, and the enthusiastic participation of so many members, we have had some new challenges and accomplishments this year as well. Here is a summary.

*WE CARE Program. Initiated by Guild members, our first disaster relief project in response to this summer's devastating wild fires was an overwhelming success. It is also the first time people can now make tax deductible contributions to a Guild project.

*Our first "What else do you do?" night. In May, our program was to learn about non-quilting interests and abilities of our members. Who knew we had such diverse talents?

*Bonus Opportunity Quilts. Due to the demand for "cowboy quilts" at the 2014 Draft Horse Classic, several members got together and produced our first themed bonus opportunity quilt for this year's Classic. It was highly successful at generating funds. A holiday themed bonus opportunity quilt will be offered at the Country Christmas Faire at the Fairgrounds.

*Member Survey to address our fund raising activities. Some members had expressed concerned about the demands of having a quilt show every year. With an excellent response rate, the survey showed the majority of Guild members want to continue with an annual quilt show.

*Dues increase. The first increase in several years, the Guild voted to increase dues which not only will improve our financial health but will also allow us to add back programs the members said they wanted.

*New member participation. There has been a significant increase in new members taking on active roles in the Guild. These people give new life to our organization and we sincerely appreciate their coming forward.

In addition to the members who went to “batt” for these projects, I would like to recognize the Board for their excellent organizational patchwork and efforts to keep us from going to pieces.

Kate Grant, President

HOSPITALITY Ardy Tobin & Jill Schlageter, 2016 Chairs

We volunteered for this so that Guests and New Members will be welcomed at meetings and informed

about our guild. Starting in January, we will be asking one mini-group to act as hostess and welcome new members each month.

The "Divas" have already stepped up and will have 3 members (plus Ardy and Jill) welcoming at the

December meeting.

When we call your mini-group, please say "yes". You won't be doing it alone - either Jill or Ardy (or both) will welcome with you. We have sparkly green "Welcome" signs for you to wear, and bright green nametags for

Guests and New Members. There is also an information brochure to pass out (green, of

course).

Here's to Guests and New Members feeling welcome in 2016!

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

For 12 years, 2000 through September 2012, Carol Phillips led the CS charge. I knew Carol for 28 years – we talked several times a day, travelled together, laughed a lot. She left a CS void that I attempted to fill . . . did you know that CS was making and donating almost 500 quilts, annually, under Carol’s leadership? To follow her was not easy but I stumbled along, continuing her ideology with great support from new and seasoned CS volunteers. I said, many times, as long as CS is fun I will continue. I am still having fun – CS is my mini-group and I know many of you feel the same way. I thank each and every one of you for keeping me, and CS, going.

Yes, I implemented some new policies along the way. In 2014, we changed the Distribution Forms and required agency representatives to sign for the quilts and agree to new terms; we replaced the worn and

tired irons, ironing boards, rulers, and extension cords – these items are also used by Home and Speaker Workshops. In December, that same year, I met with CS volunteers to solicit input for 2015 – was there anything we could do to make it easier? Some of those ideas were well received – prizes, occasional mini- workshops (Cathy Stone, Ina Gibson, Lorna Straka), and Quiltapalooza; others not so much . . . several of you really did not like the “goal” concept even though we were already doing it. CS does not try to care for the entire community – the need is greater than any one agency can meet. For two years, Kathy Biggi has stepped up – and how! She has a knack for finding fabric CS can afford (CS budget was established “back in the day” for batt). This year she made over 400 new, fun kits for which you had only positive comments. She also introduced the very popular pillowcase kits. All of this is good yet we kept wondering how we could simplify CS. After all, we change, the guild changes, now it is time for CS to change. Change is good, yes?

In March I began the first of several meetings and conversations with board members and CS volunteers to see what we could do. Now, after months of thinking, discussing, and planning we are preparing to unveil the CS changes coming in January 2016. We look forward to sharing with you soon . . .

NO Community Service in December Distribution for 2015 occurs on Wednesday, 02 December

KATHY”S KITS . . . Kathy’s most recent kit is the "First Annual CS Block Party"! Look for these easy kits with a variety of fun fabric left-overs that will make 10-inch or larger blocks. If you are interested in a project you can work on when you have a few minutes pick up a “Block Party” kit – a great way to use up those almost empty thread spools and paralyzed bobbins. Once the finished blocks are received, they will be assembled into tops.

As always, if you find that you are cleaning and purging, please keep CS in mind. Donations of thread, fabric (cotton only please), plastic bags that linens come in, and other quilting supplies are greatly appreciated. Remember, our budget goes primarily for batt.

And now the QUIZ! 1. Did you read the CS news? 2. Did you learn anything new about CS?

Cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? I will deliver a kit, quilt sandwich, or quilts to bind to you to work on at home – call or email me. Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing and working with you in 2016. Marjorie McConnell

Many thanks to the Community Service and We Care crews! We are grateful for your commitment to spreading the good

works of the quilt community.

Home Workshop

Many thanks to Betty and Eleanor for organizing Home Workshop. Many members

learned new skills, perfected already acquired skills and made new friends while

participating in their Home Workshops.

Thank to both of you.

QUILT SHOW

Quilt Show 2016 is well underway. All positions for the 2016 show have been filled. Jeanne Pincha-Tulley is seeking a co-chair for 2017.

Marjorie McConnell PTQG Quilt Show Chair 2016

Quilt Show Country Store 2016.

It's not too early to think about getting items together for the Quilt Show Country Store.  I am so happy to say that Molly Cook has stepped up to be the co-chair.

You will be able to sign up at the December meeting BEFORE the party starts…

Since the entire budget for County Store is $100 and printing costs have gone up, we need to reinstate the $1 charge for the application packet.  So bring your dollar and sign up!

Thank you,Kathy Biggi  [email protected]  & Molly Cook   [email protected]

Quilt Show Exploratory Committee

The committee has been working evaluating the questionnaires, meeting with representatives from our closest neighbors, Foothill and Valley Guilds, and continuing to research other possible events and locations.

Over half of our membership responded to the questionnaire and the majority is in favor of keeping our quilt show as it is, annually and at the fair grounds. Rescheduling is problematic due to the many events held year round in Nevada County.

Almost all respondents volunteer at the show, and will continue to volunteer at a new event also. See the ranking of importance to the right.

The board has already decided that the library will be on closed for now; for 2016 everything else will remain on schedule.
