have seen a great light; Upon those who lived in a land of
gloom
a light has shone. Isaiah 9:1
These words, which were u�ered by the prophet Isaiah 2,700 years
ago and will be proclaimed around the world this Christmas, seem
like they could have been wri�en yesterday. For we have walked in
darkness this year. We have huddled together in fear as a pandemic
washed over our world. We have mourned as the virus claimed 1.6
million lives. We have wept with those who are mourning. We have
counselled those who have lost jobs. We have paced our apartments
desperate for human company. We have yearned for our son’s
fa-miliar smell, ached for our mother’s embrace. We have cried as
our loved ones took their last breath, far away from us. We have
watched as our country was disrupted by civil unrest, natural
disasters, blackouts, and a bi�er, divisive elec�on season. We have
walked darkness this year. And perhaps we dread that the worst is
yet to come. And yet. And yet. We have seen a great light. As we
look over this past year and contemplate some of the photographs
which illumi-nate our bulle�n, we see evidence that the light, the
true light of Christ was always in our midst, even if we weren’t
able to see it. This light, which was welcomed by Mary and Joseph
on a cold dark night 2,000 years ago, which was announced by the
angels singing “Glory to God in the Highest,” which caused
shepherds and wise persons alike to bow down in humble adora-�on,
has been burning brightly among us the whole �me. God’s love, God’s
grace, God’s very gi� of God’s self to us is some-�mes most
apparent in the cold and dark, and this year was no excep�on.
Christ vanquished the darkness of our world 2,000 years ago when he
came among us in a stable. Christ con�nues to vanquish the darkness
of our world each �me we reach out in love and concern to our
brothers and sisters, near and far, and extend the love and mercy
of God to each other. Christ con�nues to be our light as we look
forward to the future with hope. You have all been the light of
Christ to us in the past year. We could not have go�en through 2020
without your love, prayers and support. We are so very blessed to
be a part of this faith community, and wish you and your family a
Merry Christmas and a new year full of health, peace, and God’s
grace. May the light of Christ fill your hearts and homes today and
