Anti-Litter Campaign

Work with all Block Associations to identify areas that need improvement and work to bring resources to meet those needs.

Encourage neighbors to post lawn signs in prominent places as reminders in the community to share responsibility for keeping the community litter free.

Create beautification projects based on community ideas.

Work with business owners to help post reminders in store shops and place receptacles in accessible places to reduce litter.

Will work with schools, houses of worship, and Block Associations to organize family participation and get the word out to help families achieve a healthier lifestyle.

West Ward Ambassadors The WWC will train leaders of the community to share

information with small groups of family, friends, and neighbors on various concerns of the community and advocate for participation in West Ward Collective efforts.

The West Ward Ambassadors will work with the WWC to engage residents to participate in the various initiatives of the WWC, promote parental involvement in education, and survey residents regarding their interest and concerns.

Parent Academy shares information about resources and services to increase parents/caregivers understanding about education mandates, individual school progress, student performance, tools and techniques that increase academic outcomes, and advocacy strategies.

Progress:To gain access to parents by collaborating with Newark PublicSchools to assist the Parent Liaisons of the West Ward Region inpromoting parental involvement.

WWC Staff Outreach the West Region Liaisons, 9 area schools during back-to-school nights, various PTO, and SLC meetings.

Helped to form the PTSA at Westside HS – currently approx. 20 members strong and growing.

Held the 2nd Parent Academy – 70 parents and 55 children attended. There were workshops to cover various topics which included; Motivating Black Males to Achieve, Strategies for Single Moms, Statewide Parent Advocacy Network (Special Education), Health & Nutrition, Teaching African American History at Home, Financial Literacy, and Census 2010.

Daddy-Daughter Dinner Dance helped 25 fathers and 31daughters to celebrate their relationships. Fathers received information about how much fathers are needed in the family and services that are available to help support individual and community development.

Mother & Son Mother’s Day Breakfast – Boys were able to present tributes to their mothers through the joint efforts of Little League and Pop Warner.

Progress: All 14 West Ward teams were funded in 2009 to assist with uniforms,

equipment, insurance, and umpire services.

In January 2010, 75 coaches attended the first Coaches Clinic at Boylan Recreation Center. The goal of the session was to share the mission of recreation for the West Ward, which includes; developing athletic abilities of the youth, tutoring at least once a week, parental support, and mentoring opportunities.

Father’s Day Cookout is designed to provide a way for fathers to interact with their children in a fun way and promote involvement in activities that include other men from the ward in recreation, education, and the Brother’s Club.

The West Ward Arts and Culture Academy worked with 32 youth from the community to help bring awareness to the media industry. The youth across the ward created a presentation based on the theme ‘I Believe’.

Progress: This year through the joint efforts of the WWC and the

Council’soffice the preliminary structure is being developed. Men of

theWard met monthly and coordinated efforts to caravanthroughout the ward during the hours of 11:00pm and

1:00am.The meetings have been suspended until September in an

effortto re-organize efforts.
