Continuing on from this is our face-to-face communication, and it saddens me to hear a growing number of con-cerns from our staff of school incidents whereby teachers, support staff and se-curity have been spoken to in an unpro-fessional manner by parents.

Our school is based on the Aldar Acad-emies values; respect is one of these and I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents to be mindful when speaking to adults in the school. There will of course be times when you feel frustrated, however these feelings must be communicated to staff in a respect-ful manner.

We pride ourselves on having an open door policy. Should you wish to discuss this further please come in to meet with a member of our Senior Leadership Team.

On Sunday 14th October from 8am – 9am, Mr. Atkins and Mrs. Fox from Al Bateen Academy, will be visiting The Pearl Academy to hold a parent pres-entation and Q&A session on the Inter-national Baccalaureate Diploma Pro-gramme (IBDP).

The IB Diploma Programme is an inter-national pre-university qualification. IB Diploma Graduates are highly regard-ing by university admissions tutors and often receive favourable entry require-ments to their chosen university des-tinations. Mr. Atkins and Mrs. Fox will be presenting an overview of what is

PARENT WORKSHOP : INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMMEinvolved in the IB Diploma Programme and the well documented advantages of studying this over other pre-university qualifications such as A Levels.

The information session will look to cover the following:

- a brief overview of subjects on o f fer.

- the wider requirements.

- the type of student that the IB d e v e lo p s .

- University courses of study/destinations for recent Al Bateen grad-uates.

This presentation will take place in the Music Room and all our parents are invited. You do not need to register for this event.

Examination Results 2018 - Al Bateen Academy

As prospective parents and students we would like to keep you informed about student life at Al Bateen Academy. We therefore hope you don’t mind us send-ing occasional articles to your school for inclusion in your school newsletter. At Al Bateen Academy we aim to publish an engaging newsletter every 4 weeks – with the main foci a) celebrating stu-dent success and participation, and b) providing parents with essential infor-mation about the school and our cur-riculum. In between editions, we always produce a weekly Parent Bulletin.

As a school, we are delighted with the IB DP and I/GCSE Summer Examination results. Congratulations to all of our students. In a future newsletter we will feature the University destinations for our IB DP students but, for the mean-time, we would like to share our results with you.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) Results 2018

The IB DP is an internationally recog-nized and rigorous two year pre-Univer-sity qualification (Years 12 and 13) that requires students to study 6 subjects (3 at Higher Level; 3 at Standard Lev-el) plus the core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity Action Service (CAS). The maximum possible score is 45 points. 24 points, with no failing conditions, is the minimum diploma pass mark.

The IB DP enjoys a high level of respect and recognition among the world’s Uni-versities/higher education institutions. For students, success in the IB DP often results in advanced standing, course credit, scholarships, and other admis-sions related benefits at many univer-sities. The International Baccalaure-ate Organisation (IBO) works with the higher education community to ensure IB DP students get the recognition they have earned, as well as to examine and further develop programmes to make sure the IB DP continues to offer the best preparation for university studies and life beyond.

For more information about the IB DP go to www.ibo.org

In 2018, 48 students graduated from the Year 13 IB DP cohort at Al Bateen Academy (23 boys; 25 girls; including 3 students from the UAE).

The IB DP is a strength of the school. Here is a summary of the results:

- Average point score = 32.3 points (third consecutive year the school has exceeded 32 points)- 2.7 points above world average (29.6 points)

- % diploma pass rate (24+ points) = 90% - 11% above world average (79%)

- % of students achieving 40+ points = 8% (2% predicted)- % of students achieving 30+ points = 56% (37% predicted)- % UAE students achieving 24+ points = 100% (100% predicted)

Average Points Score per student that achieved the FULL DIPLOMA = 5.13 (above world average)

The Highest Performing Subjects for IB DP

Top Student Performers

International General Certificate of Secondary Education (I/GCSE) Results 2018

Year 10 marks the beginning of the IGCSE programme and our two year Middle School Curriculum (Years 10 and 11). The GCSE is a British academ-ic qualification awarded in a specified subject; the International GCSE qual-ification is available for international students. Both GCSE and IGCSE are qualifications equally recognised by universities and employers throughout the world. For some subjects there is no IGCSE option so the school has opt-ed for a GCSE qualification (e.g. GCSE Physical Education). For both IGCSE and GCSE there is no easy option or easy subject.

Students choose one or more science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, and Phys-ics) and must study IGCSE Mathematics and English. Students can then choose additional I/GCSE subjects from differ-ent options blocks. Current I/GCSE op-tion subjects are, as follows: Arabic, Art & Design, Business Studies, Computer Science, Design Technology, Drama, Economics, French, History, Geography, ICT, Music, Physical Education, Psy-chology, Sociology and Spanish.

I/GCSE is graded A* (highest) to G or 9 (highest) to 1.

Year 11 students are required to achieve a minimum 5 A* - C (or 9 - 5) including English, Mathematics and a Science to meet the entry requirements for the IB DP (Senior School).

In 2018, 90 Year 11 students complet-ed the I/GCSE programme at Al Bateen Academy (60 boys; 30 girls; including 27 students from the UAE).

The summary of results includes 9-1 conversion.

- 1+ A*- A I/GCSE grades = 90%- 1+ A*- B = 98%- 1+ A*- C = 99%------------------ 5+ A*- A I/GCSE grades = 41% (37% 2017)- 5+ A*- B = 63% (56% 2017)- 5+ A* - C = 84% (75% 2017)- 5+ A*- C including English and Mathematics = 81% (65% 2017)- A* - C English & Mathematics combined = 88%

WHAT MAKES A GOOD LEADER?

U9 GIRLS FOOTBALL

We are proud to announce that during a special assembly on ‘What makes a good leader?’ our Year 6 leadership teams were introduced to the school. The children have accepted their roles of responsibility in school with pride and maturity, and are looking forward to commencing their jobs. Our Head Boy and Girl, along with the Deputy Head Boy and Girl introduced the Prefects, Play Leaders, Librarians and House Captains. Congratulations to all involved.

On Wednesday, our u9 girls’ football team hosted Al Muna. The game was played in a fantastic spirit by both sides and both had a great desire to win. The Pearl were on top in the early stages of the game but Al Muna demonstrated some fantastic defending and the goalkeeper made some brilliant saves. This was the story of the game until Jamilla Ramadan scored her first ever goal for The Pearl with a well placed shot into the bottom corner. The Pearl quickly made it 0-2 with a great individual goal from Ella Bontemps, her second goal in as many games. Some resolute defending from The Pearl defenders, Rawan Ismail, Mariam Al Kaabi, Yasmeen Zaher, Chloe O’Connor, Arabella Milne-Hutson and some great goalkeeping by Mackenzie Harrison saw the game out and The Pearl ran out 0-2 winners. Well done girls.

ABU DHABI POTTERY

THE GREAT PEARL BAKE OFF

Year 6 had an amazing time at Abu Dhabi Pottery. They were awed by Homa and her precision on the potters wheel. She was very inspiring and had some great techniques. She showed them how to use the potters wheel along side the sponge and fork technique. She explained how to do all the methods and they had a go at making pinch pots, Homa answered all of their questions with enthusiasm. They were also allowed to buy some pottery made by her and her students. If you would like to improve your skills, you can attend classes.

By Noella and Isabelle (Year 6)

The staff were challenged to enter The Pearl’s very first Bake Off competition. All entries looked and tasted magnificent but sadly there could only be 3 winners. Taking first place was Mrs. Bheda with her culinary masterpiece of the M& M cake. Second place was Miss Cockcroft’s banana loaf with caramel sauce cake and third place was given to Mrs. Shripra Sud for her delicious carrot cake.

I am sure you will agree the competition was very tough to judge! A special thank you to Mrs. Venter for organising the Bake Off and to Magrudy’s in Al Wadha Mall for organizing the lovely gift for all participants. We look forward to the next whole staff competition.

YEAR 6 AL BATEEN VISIT

On Sunday, our Year 6 children had the opportunity of spending a morning at Al Bateen Academy. This valuable experience gave the children an insight into school life next year. They had a school tour led by the fantastic Year 7 and 8 Student Ambassadors which allowed the children to ask any burning questions or raise any concerns they may have about moving into a secondary school. The children also enjoyed taking part in a science lesson involving fruity batteries. The children impressed the teachers with their excellent be-haviour throughout the morning.

This week in Foundation Stage 1 we be-gan our inquiry into” Are all bears cud-dly?’

We shared the story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, sequenced the events and acted them out. We enjoyed us-ing Goldilocks props as part of our en-hanced provision and used some story themed character puppets in our small world play. A version of the story can be found at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KndSVsY5HWMWe competed a range of fine motor ac-tivities during Funky Finger lessons. These activities will prepare our arms, hands and fingers for mark making and writing.

In Maths we focused on ordering ob-jects by size and using the correspond-ing language.

Every day in Foundation Stage we are observing the children, looking at where they are in their learning and using this information to plan their next steps. We assess the children according to their progress in each of the seven areas of learning but we also look at how they learn. The UK Statutory Framework for Early Years identifies three ‘Charac-teristics of Effective Learning’; Playing and Exploring, Active Learning, Crea-tivity and Thinking Critically. Developing these characteristics is vitally important for every child to insure they meet all of the Early Learning Goals and to prepare them for future learning.

Please refer to the’ Characteristics of Effective Learning’ display board in the courtyard for more information.

In Topic, we looked at the work of Henri Rousseau and began to work on our own collages in the same style.
