Dear Parents,

The Pearl Attendance Expectation is 98% - Outstanding!

I am proud to work at a school where the whole community is committed to the value of excellence - excellence in academic achievements, excellence in sport and excellence in developing chil-dren with a strong moral compass.

Having read the article in The National this week about attendance in a num-ber of UAE schools dropping to 60%, I am excited to share with you that our attendance this week has been 94% and our lateness only 2%. At The Pearl we also believe in excellence in attendance and are near our target of 98%.

Teachers at The Pearl also understand the importance of every lesson. Our out-standing lessons will continue through-out the Holy Month of Ramadan and last three weeks of term – until we finish at 2.20pm on Thursday 5th July. Children are therefore expected to be in school and on time until the end of the aca-demic year.

During these final weeks, teachers will be continuing to assess children in each subject area using both summative and formative assessments. Summative as-

Should you wish to read further about Assessment for Learning you may find this document by John Gardner inter-esting.

http://ccea.org.uk/sites/default/files/docs/curriculum/assessment/assess-ment_for_learning/afl_practical_guide.pdf

To support our working families we are looking into the possibility of opening an Extended Day Provision. This will mean that the school is open for childcare from 6am to 6pm. Parents will be able to drop their children in the mornings at Breakfast Club from 6am or pick up from After School Club at 4.30pm (FS1-Year 6) or 6pm (Year 1-6) as required.

If you would be interested in using the Extended Day Provision please would you complete the below Survey Monkey questionnaire.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EXT-PROVISION

Please may I remind parents that, in the mornings, children should be dropped off at Reception or the Courtyard ready to go to class independently for lessons that start at 8.30am. In response to pa-rental requests, we will be leaving the side gates open until 8.45am during the Holy Month.

School starts at 8.30am so children ar-riving after this time must first report in at Reception to be registered.

During Ramadan, unless you have a pre-arranged meeting, from 8.45am un-til 1.15pm, parents must enter through Gate C and do not have access beyond the Reception. This is to prevent disrup-tion to teaching and learning but also an important part of our school’s safe-guarding procedures. I thank you all for your support in this matter.

I wish you a peaceful weekend,

Abigail

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL, MRS. FISHBOURNE

ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING IS THE PROCESS OF SEEKING AND INTERPRETING EVIDENCE FOR USE BY LEARNERS AND THEIR TEACHERS TO DECIDE WHERE THE LEARNERS ARE IN THEIR LEARNING, WHERE THEY NEED TO GO AND HOW BEST TO GET THERE. ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING IS ALSO KNOWN AS FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT.

sessments are end of unit, term or year assessments. These assessments are a snapshot in time and often rely heav-ily on memory. They are used alongside the formative assessments that are ongoing to give the overall judgement of a child’s ability and to inform future teaching.

Formative assessment is also known as Assessment for Learning

ISSUE NO.32 MAY 24TH 2018

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your support of the Darkness Into Light walk, whereby over 1000 walkers joined together across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah on May 12th 2018 at 3:45am in solidarity with those who are suffering with mental health difficulties. The Darkness Into Light Walk is a worldwide event that takes place yearly in over 180 venues across the world. In total, 97 ALDAR representatives (from Abu Dhabi & Al Ain) comprising of students, staff; their families, friends and pets walked with us out of the darkness and into the light. This really is an incredible achievement and one that has not gone unnoticed.

I also wish to extend a special thank you to Laura Brennan and Sinead Mcloughlin (from Al Bateen Academy) who led the promotion of the event across the

academies in conjunction with the support of all the School Counsellors: Sandra Gorman, Laura Channer, Maryke Venter, Bridgette Willis, Tina Polite, Nicola Peacock and Head of Inclusion Kate McMillan.

positive mental health community projects as well as social events. We strive to improve the quality of life for those suffering in darkness, through the alleviation of stigma around mental health, and identification or provision of accessible, effective and appropriate support services.

Without your support, we would be unable to see our vision come true. Together we are making a difference.

Thank you.

This week we have been learning about Ramadan and the importance of being kind and compassionate to others. We discussed the idea of the Gift of Education as a small way that we can help other children who are less fortunate than we are.

In Maths, we looked at patterns and completed on going assessment tasks. In Phonics we have been focusing on the sound ‘w’. We created webs, tasted watermelon and enjoyed playing with water wheels. Please support your child at home by reviewing the sounds we have covered and encouraging them to identify the initial sounds of objects in the environment.

We continue to complete ‘Funky Fingers’ activities every day. These enhance fine motor skills and are very important for pencil control. A selection of simple ideas for you do at home can be found at the following link.

We have been learning the letter (Qa) with the word (Qamar) Moon.

RAMADAN TIMINGS

Please note that during Ramadan your child can enter the classroom from 8.25am onwards. They must be supervised by an adult in the courtyard if you arrive at school before this time. Registration is at 8.55am. The day finishes at 1.30pm.

INDEPENDENCE

In preparation for the children’s transition to Year One, we are encouraging the FS2 children to be as independent as possible. May we please ask that you allow your child to take their own belongings in to class each morning and put them away in their cubby by themselves. At home, you can help by giving your child more responsibility with their homework or some simple household chores, along with allowing them to dress and undress independently.

In English this week we began to take a closer look at our new topic question ‘What do we celebrate?’ The children read non-fiction pieces about different celebrations familiar to them with a focus on a very recent celebration - The Royal Wedding. The children focused on answering ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions using full sentences and correct punctuation and grammar.

In Mathematics the children have looked at measuring weight using standard and non-standard units of measure. The children used balance scales and weighing scales in their activities and were very excited to find the weight of different classroom items. We took a close look at the language needed in relations to weight such as heavier, heaviest, lighter, lightest, equal, balanced, grams and kilograms.

THIS WEEKREMINDERS

Please remember to wash hats regularly and bring them to school every day.

In Topic this week the children researched famous people from different countries to find out why they are celebrated by their country and others around the world. The children had a close look at leaders of different countries and what made them good leaders and important role models.

Year 4 have been extremely busy this week and thoroughly enjoying their enquiry, ‘Who do you think made the Titanic sink?’ Not only have we been researching the different jobs on the Titanic, we have also been acting out the roles and created a class documentary about what life was like working on the Titanic. The children engaged in a lively debate about whose job was the most important onboard the ship and they impressed us by supporting their ideas with evidence. Using this knowledge the

children then went on to write a diary entry pretending to be a worker on the ship, focusing on including correctly punctuated subordinate clauses. In Science we went on a walk around the school listening carefully to all the sounds we can hear in different locations. We then investigated how the sound was created and how it travelled to our ears for us to be able to hear it. During Maths we have focused on ratio, decimals and fractions and applying the associative law.
