As a mark of respect to Sheikh Zayed, our celebrations developed the idea - ‘Great Leaders inspire Great Leaders’.

Throughout the day, children chose leading Emiratis to study in a selection of innovative and creative workshops. These workshops were specially de-signed, by our outstanding staff, to deepen the children’s understanding of leadership, broaden their interests and inspire them to become the leaders of the future. We wish the UAE a wonderful 47th Na-tional Day.

PEER MEDIATORS 2018-2019The Pearl Academy Peer Mediators have been introduced to the school at Assembly on Sunday, 25th November after a few weeks of training.

What is a Peer Mediator?

Peer mediators are students who are caring, compassionate and genuine. They are also generous, helpful and a good example of being a patient friend.

The peer mediators are trained to act as positive role models to the children at our school. This team will work to-gether with the School Counsellor to enhance kind and respectful behaviour, good communication skills and creat-ing an improved positive school climate and a greater sense of connection for

the whole school. A peer mediator acts as a neutral third party to guide conver-sations between peers in conflict.

Responsibilities of a Peer Mediator:

• Offer assistance to new or ex-isting children who may need extra help with social interactions or building friendships;

• To listen attentively to under-stand better;

• Provide support, encourage-ment and even friendship to students. (In turn, mediators benefit as they are building their own confidence, self-es-teem, and leadership skills);

• Each Peer Mediator has to commit to the program for the entire school year.

As a mark of respect, at 8am today we lowered our school flags to half-mast where they remained until 11.30am, when we held a minute’s silence before raising the flag and singing the national anthem. As a school community today we re-member the great sacrifice of all ser-vice men and women from the UAE and around the world, past and present, and thank them for their protection.

On Wednesday we celebrated National Day at school. It was a very exciting day and children enjoyed going around the school and doing different activities. In the library we had fun filled activities and the children loved them thoroughly.

Year 5 had a great time on Tuesday at Umm Al Emarat Park, using their map reading skills to complete an orienteering challenge in groups. Starting with a few games of the Great Lawn, followed by a race around the park in order to find different coloured pens by using four figure grid references on their maps, allowed for the children to work excellently in teams. They showed great respect towards the park and general public, displayed excellent col-laboration skills in their teams and made us, the teachers, proud as they represented The Pearl so well.

UMM AL EMARAT PARK TRIP PRINCIPALAWARD

Well done to all Academy of Excellence children who took part in the Pearl Presentation Evening on Monday. From speeches about computer safety and helping the planet, to kids and superheroes and overcoming your fears, the children worked so hard to create speeches about their passion: researching facts, adding in opinions and writing to a high level. All speeches allowed for an engaged audience from start to finish. The judges, Mrs Fishbourne and Mrs Hughes-Lewis, had a tough job of awarding 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as everyone was deserving of praise. However, congratulations must be given to Andre Fernandes (1st Place), Faisal Abu Esaifan (2nd place) and Saeed Al Otaiba (3rd place). Special mentions must also be given to Haya Asif, Jeremie Casianan and Adeeb Al Buhaisi who were recognised by the judges as pro-ducing speeches that were also of such high quality. Well done to all children involved for working hard and taking part in such a successful evening that was enjoyed by all parents and visitors who attended.

This week in Foundation Stage 1 we continued to learn about the UAE. We celebrated National Day on Wednesday, focusing on some of the current leaders in the nation in the fields of art galler-ies, architecture and the police. Thank you to all parents who sent in food for us to share.

This week the children continued to look at non-fiction books. Within these non-fiction books the children looked at sets of instructions and the verbs used in the instruction text. They have also been learning how to label diagrams.

In Mathematics the children have learned about finding the missing number in number bonds to 10 or 20. They have had to read the sum and use number lines, 100 squares or numicon to work out what the missing number or symbol was to complete the

We have had a fantastic week continuing our crawl work! The children are using their imaginations and are describing their Space journeys in creative ways. They have been thinking about emotion-consequence sentences and using a thesaurus to improve their vocabulary.

In Maths, we have been measuring! The children have learnt how to use a ruler to measure different objects. We have measured our Moon Jumps using measuring tapes, and have compared how far we can blow a marshmallow.

We are really looking forward to our Year 3 Trip next week. We are visiting Manarat Al Saadiyat and will be taking part in a space themed Art Day!

It was wonderful seeing all the children supporting National Day, learning about Emirati Leaders and their achievements.

YEAR FOURWe have had a wonderful week in Year 4 continuing our learning in several areas. We have had some extremely interesting English lessons this week with the children working on writing and performing persuasive speeches. All of the teachers were extremely impressed with the children’s choices of language, as well as their expression and intonation, in order to rally their village against the evil Emperor Hadrian. In SPaG this week we began looking at the uses of apostrophes with a focus on possession, please refer to the Padlet page for some ideas on how to support your child’s learning as well as for their weekly spellings.

Our Maths lessons have been centred on the use of decimals, moving on later in the week to recognising decimal/fraction equivalents. This is something that the children found a little bit tricky to get their heads around, however, they have persevered and are now becoming much more confident with this concept. During our Science lessons we have continued our exploration into the properties of solids, liquids and gases, this week investigating the properties of different gases. Our computing lessons have taken us on a journey in to the world of HTML, children were able to read, adapt and edit HTML and CSS to alter the content and appearance of a webpage. It was clear to see that we have some budding computer programmers in our midst!

Maths: In Maths we will continue to learn about fraction and decimal equivalents. We will be extending our learning by looking at writing mixed-number fractions as decimals, as well as looking at converting fractions that are not multiples of ten (for example 1/4, 1/3, 1/6).

SPaG: We will continue to look at the uses of apostrophes, solidifying our knowledge of the use of apostrophes for possession, particularly in plural nouns.

Science: Next week we will be carrying out an investigation into the properties of gases, making sure that we carry out a fair and conclusive experiment, considering all variables.
