From the Desk of Deacon Steven Gonzalez Come Follow Me
Our Parish Mission Statement The Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Concep on and Assump on of Our Lady
is a Eucharis c community: glorifying the Father, united with the Son, led by the Holy Spirit and protected by Mary. We are called to pray,
educate and serve God’s people in this life and in the hope of eternal life.
I n today’s reading from the Gospel of Mark, we read that Jesus is proclaiming the gospel of God to the people of Galilee. He says, “This is the me of ful-fillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” As He passes the Sea of Galilee, He calls to Si-mon, his brother Andrew, and James and his brother John, saying “Come a er me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They all drop what they are doing, leaving everything behind, and follow the Lord. As I reflect on this passage, I think of my own moment of encountering the Lord for the first me. I remember experiencing His merciful and uncondi-
onal love. It happened when I was a sophomore at Fordham University. Growing up, I had always iden fied as a Catholic but never really took it too seriously. It wasn’t un l I was trying to decide on a major and to figure out what to do with my life that I thought, for some reason, I should ask God. I remember going to the Blue Chapel in Kea ng Hall, si ng there, looking at the crucifix and asking God, “What do you want me to do with my life? What is my purpose?” Now, I had no idea what the Eucharist was or who it was, but all of a sudden, I felt a presence emana ng from the tabernacle, and I dis-
nctly remember hearing a voice -- in a telepathic way -- say to me, “Steven, I love you. I want you to be Catholic, complete your sacraments, and think
about being a Catholic priest.” At that moment, I felt totally filled with peace and love: a love for all of crea on. I didn’t know where it came from. I knew the voice wasn’t mine and had to be God’s. The last thing I wanted to be was a priest. I was okay with being
Catholic, but becoming a priest just didn’t fit what I saw
myself doing with my life. I was hoping to get into business or poli cs, but the priesthood? No way. I kept going to the Blue Chapel, He kept speaking to me and I kept doing what He asked. I got a spiritu-al director, enrolled in the RCIA program, and started reading everything I could about Catholicism. I began ge ng involved more at my home parish of St. Lucy’s in the Bronx. I learned more about God, His Church and con nued experiencing His personal love for me. I realized my soul always hungered for His Love, and that was the true fulfillment of what I had been look-ing for in my life. I felt that I could leave behind everything I had known before, follow Him, tell others about Him, and be another “fisher of men.” In your own lives, I challenge you to encounter the Lord and ask what He is calling you to do. What is He asking you to leave behind so that you can fol-low Him more closely? If we con nually strive to do this, we become witnesses of the life-giving truths of the Gospel to others, and we then become other “fishers of men.”

Nex Weekend’s Readings Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B
Reading I: Deuteronomy 18: 15-20 The author wants to find a place for prophecy in his country. He describes a true prophet as a na ve Israelite who is called by Yahweh and con nues the prophe c role of Moses. Reading II: 1 Corinthians 7: 32-35 Paul is addressing newly married couples. We note his view of the equality of men and women. He advises couples but does not impose any solu ons. The Gospel: Mark 1: 21-28 Capernaum is the se ng for this last sec on of Chapter One. Jesus’ “amazing” teaching did not rely on appeals to Scripture or other teachers for verifica on. The healing He works presages the end of the power of demons.

If you have a ques on about any aspect of our Catholic Church and faith, contact us and we will answer to the best of our ability.
265. “What are some benefits of reading Sacred Scripture?”
The Bible is God speaking to us. Catholics believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. All necessary truths that God intended to communicate for the purpose of our salva on are contained in Sacred Scripture! They are God’s own revealing of Himself. By reading them, we come to know Him be er. Sacred Scripture is filled with encouragement. The early Chris ans knew to look to the Scriptures to nourish their hope. The Psalms speak of God’s powerful love and mercy. The Acts of the Apostles showcases the work of the Holy Spirit in the Church. By reflec ng on God’s past fidelity, we can be filled with hope for the future. Reading Scripture will make us be er evangelists. Reading Sacred Scripture can help our faith mature. Many Catholics stop studying their faith when they are con-fronted by difficult ques ons from non-Catholics. All too o en, we offer weak or uncertain defenses of our faith. Every Catholic can benefit by grappling with serious ques-
ons of faith, grounded in the study of Scripture. By reading the Bible, we will keep focused on what ma ers. Chris an life is fundamentally a fight to keep God at the center of our lives and stay focused on the things that ma er. Scripture helps us to face life with God’s perspec ve at the forefront, able to rule out the kinds of things that, in the end, don’t really ma er. Reading Scripture teaches us to pray. Many Catholics express a desire for a richer prayer life. Well, the Bible offers us words to pray. We can model our prayer on the saints and stories contained in the Scriptures. As such, the Bible is a school of prayer, which teaches us how to ex-press the things we hold deep in our hearts. The more we read Scripture, the more clearly we are able to hear God’s voice. The more a uned to the logic of salva on we become by knowing God in the Scriptures, the more readily we will hear God speaking to us.
