About the LineI recently met a kind, 79-year old Polish immigrant, Lucy, who lives alone in a beautiful Art Deco
home in Chicago. She became interested in my career of fabric and pattern design. After expressing
my frustration with a current “creative block”, Lucy invited me to her home to see her garden in
hopes it would spark some ideas. Her garden was brimming with beautiful plants and flowers, many
of which were unknown to me. Lucy went on to bring me a stack of architectural and home décor
magazines earmarked and notated with inspirational pages she thought I might use. I designed
Lucy’s Garden, with its Art Deco feel and colors directly from Lucy’s garden, to honor the woman
who showed such interest and was willing to take time to help me out of my rut.
