The Parish Church of All Saints 6 November 2016 – 3rd Sunday before Advent You are very welcome to All Saints this morning for this sung Eucharist (Holy Communion). A special welcome to Isabelle Jasmine Rigby and Gemma Leanne Rigby, who are being baptized today, their family and friends. Children are very welcome here and, if they want to, they can take part in the children’s activities that happen at the east end of the church and in the small chapel nearby. Children leave after coming to the altar for a prayer at the end of the first hymn and return for the Communion. At certain times in the service the choir sings on behalf of the congregation; this allows us to think more deeply about our relationship with God in our lives, through meditating on the words and music chosen for the day. The words that they sing can be found either in the service book or later in this sheet. Today the mass setting is Darke in F. The service starts on page 1 of the red booklet. The opening hymn is 461. We say together the collect the special prayer for this Sunday. Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen The reading from the Old Testament today is Job 19:23-27a; which is then followed by the reading from the New Testament, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17. The Gradual Hymn is 387 after which we remain standing and turn to face the centre of the church from where the Gospel is read. Today’s Gospel is Luke 20:27-38 - the text is on the back of this pew sheet. The preacher today is the Rev’d Jonathan Wilkes. After the sermon, we will process to the font singing hymn 369, for the baptisms of Isabelle Jasmine Rigby and Gemma Leanne Rigby The words for the baptism start on page 13 of the red booklet. After the Peace we sing the Offertory Hymn 351 during which a collection is taken for the work of the church, and the bread and wine for the Eucharist are brought to the altar. The service continues with the Preparation of the Table on page 7 of the red booklet. While the congregation comes forward to receive Holy Communion the choir will sing the motet Jesu, joyaunce of my heart (Ahle, harm. Bach). Jesu, joyaunce of my heart, Blessed Jesu; Bliss unto my soul thou art, Holy Jesu; Sure defence from Satan's dart, Sweetest Jesu; Jesu, sweetest Jesu. Thousand times I think of thee, My redeemer; Only yearn thy face to see, My redeemer; Longing for thy company, My redeemer; Jesu my redeemer. Nought is lovelier than thou, Dearest Jesu; None is friendlier than thou, Gentlest Jesu; Nor is any sweet as thou, Sweetest Jesu; Jesu, sweetest Jesu. After Communion the Priest will say: God of peace, whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom and restored the broken to wholeness of life: look with compassion on the anguish of the world, and by your healing power make whole both people and nations; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen The Final Hymn is 494 (to the tune of 413). After the service, refreshments are served. Please feel very welcome to stay and enjoy, and if you have not been to the church before, please do introduce yourself to one of the clergy or churchwardens – we’d love to meet you. This sheet is for you to take home. Please keep your belongings with you at all time

The Parish Church of All Saints

6 November 2016 – 3rd Sunday before Advent

You are very welcome to All Saints this morning for this sung Eucharist (Holy Communion). A special

welcome to Isabelle Jasmine Rigby and Gemma Leanne Rigby, who are being baptized today, their

family and friends. Children are very welcome here and, if they want to, they can take part in the

children’s activities that happen at the east end of the church and in the small chapel nearby.

Children leave after coming to the altar for a prayer at the end of the first hymn and return for the

Communion.

At certain times in the service the choir sings on behalf of the congregation; this allows us to think

more deeply about our relationship with God in our lives, through meditating on the words and music

chosen for the day. The words that they sing can be found either in the service book or later in this

sheet. Today the mass setting is Darke in F.

The service starts on page 1 of the red booklet. The opening hymn is 461. We say together the collect – the special prayer for this Sunday.

After the service, refreshments are served. Please feel

very welcome to stay and enjoy, and if you have not been

All Saints Bell Ringers

Our bell ringers entered the Surrey Association 6 and 8 bell striking competitions held at Betchworth on 29 October,

winning the 8 bell competition and collecting a trophy, now

proudly displayed upstairs in the ringing room. The idea is to try to ensure that no two bells strike together and that

all are evenly spaced as they are rung. Our ringers also currently hold the Docklands Challenge trophy and have

entered again this year. This competition runs all year and

is judged as you go, with the final result announced at the end of the year. Kingston is currently in the lead on this

one.

The Gardening Team

If you can lend a hand every now and then to our great group who tend our churchyard then let us know. It’s

great exercise!

THE READINGS Job 19:23-27a ‘O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book! O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock for ever! For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me! 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17 As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word.

Luke 20:27-38 Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question, ‘Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die any more, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.’
