ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL CHURCH BETHESDA, MARYLAND

The Order of Worship for the Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time / Year C

Entrance Antiphon: Ps 88:3 Let my prayer come into your presence.

Incline your ear to my cry for help, O Lord.

Reading I: 2 Mc 7:1-2, 9-14 Jewish thought before the time of Jesus

believed in a reward for the faithful beyond death.

Psalm Response: Ps 17 In this individual lament,

the psalmist prays for God’s help against enemies, hoping for vindication. Christians use the imagery at the end of today’s verses as a way of talking about

the risen life: “On waking I shall be content in your presence.”

Reading II: 2 Thes 2:16-3:5 Paul encourages the community

to trust in God’s faithful presence that will stay with them through all difficulties.

Gospel: Lk 20:27-38 One of the Sadducees makes fun of

belief in the resurrection by inventing an impossible scenario.

Jesus points out that we change when we go through death into resurrection,

and we don’t know what the risen life is like.

Communion Antiphon: Ps 23:1-2 The Lord is my shepherd;

there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures

where he gives me repose, near restful waters he leads me.

Choral Texts and Translations

Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring ........................................................................ J. S. Bach

Jesu, joy of man's desiring, Word of God, our flesh that fashioned, Holy wisdom, love most bright; With the fire of life impassioned, Drawn by Thee, our souls aspiring Striving still to truth unknown, Soar to uncreated light. Soaring, dying round Thy throne.

Through the way where hope is guiding, Theirs is beauty's fairest pleasure; Hark, what peaceful music rings; Theirs is wisdom's holiest treasure. Where the flock, in Thee confiding, Thou dost ever lead Thine own Drink of joy from deathless springs. In the love of joys unknown.

(attr. Robert Bridges, 1844 – 1930)

Hide Me Under the Shadow of Thy Wings .......... John E. West

Hide me under the shadow of Thy wings, O Lord, and give Thine angels charge concerning me: That I may lie down in peace, and take my rest, for it is Thou, Lord, only, that makest me to dwell in safety.

(cf. Ps 17:8)

Scholastic Book Fair De Chantal's 2019 Scholastic Book Fair continues this Monday, November 11 through Friday, November 15. Be enchanted by new titles covering extraordinary heroes, teen drama, edge-of-your-seat mysteries, scary stories, fantasy, books for gamers, and so much more! Stories for readers

from Pre-K to ninth grade, along with favorite authors and series, and books for moms and dads, too, will be available. Fun and unique gifts will dazzle kids of all ages, and be the perfect stocking stuffers for Christmas! Hours of the fair are 9:00 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Friday. The Saints Go Marching In In honor of All Saints Day, the fourth grade students chose saints to research. Each fourth grade student reported on the saint of their choice, and dressed up as their chosen saint for our All Saints Day school Mass. After Mass, the many fourth grade "saints" visited the lower school to share important facts about their saint. It brought the day to life for our school and parish. It reminded us that we are all called to be saints! Spirit Week What a week to be a De Chantal student! The last week of October was Spirit Week, where students, faculty, and administration celebrated school spirit through Pajama Day Monday, Turn Back Time Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday, Halloween Costumes on Thursday, and Blue and White Friday. Halloween parties, pep rallies, and spirit day games made this a fun-filled week. St. Jane de Chantal students wrapped up Spirit Week by giving back to the community. On the afternoon of Halloween, all students took part in a Dance-a-Thon to raise money and awareness for Mary House, a community-based organization that provides transitional housing services, shelter, and support programs to homeless and struggling families.

Do you argue, or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vi with a long i) helps couples through difficult times in their marriages. This program has helped many couples experiencing difficulties in their marriage. For confidential information or to register for the upcoming program beginning with a weekend on January 24-26, 2020, visit: www.HelpOurMarriage.org, call (443) 400-7017, or email: [email protected]. Catholic Charities Tax Assistance Program Low-income families need your help this coming tax season. Do you use Turbo Tax? If yes, hundreds of low-income families need your help this coming “tax season.” Every year the Catholic Charities’ VITA tax assistance program assists struggling parents with their tax returns, maximizing their refunds to help them achieve financial stability. But we need your help to make sure more families claim their well-deserved Earned Income and Child tax credits. We only ask for eight hours of your time over the course of two Saturdays in February, March and the first half of April. Training classes will be provided in January. For more information, contact call Deacon Jim Shanahan at 202-772-4310 or [email protected].

In today’s second reading, St. Paul prays that the Thessalonians may be strengthened “in every good deed and word.” May we, too,

be strengthened and empowered to use our time and talents for the good of others. (2 Thes 2:17)

Second Collection: Maintenance The second collection this weekend, November 9/10, will be our monthly collection to help with the repair and maintenance of our parish facilities. Poor Box The Poor Box next weekend, November 16/17, will benefit Montgomery Hospice, and its team of doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, spiritual counselors, social workers, certified nursing assistants, bereavement counselors, and volunteers who work with patients and their families to provide quality end-of-life care in homes, extended care facilities, and at Casey House, their acute care facility. For more information, visit www.montgomeryhospice.org. IRA Charitable Distribution If you are age 70 ½ or older, you can transfer up to $100,000 each year directly from your traditional IRA account to St. Jane Frances de Chantal Parish. This smarter way to give may satisfy a portion or all of your annual required minimum distribution (RMD) and serve as a qualified charitable distribution for your IRA, which can save you on taxes even if you do not itemize! Contact your plan custodian to complete the IRA transfer. For IRA charitable distribution checks, please make sure the check stub lists the “donor” name and the fund the distribution should benefit (e.g., offertory, donation, St. Martin’s Cloak, etc.).

“Resurrection is not only the fact of rising after death, but is a new genre of life which we already experience now; it is the victory over nothing that we can already anticipate. Resurrection is the foundation of the faith and of Christian hope. Were there no reference to Paradise and to eternal life, Christianity would be reduced to ethics, to a philosophy of life. Instead, the message of Christian faith comes from heaven, it is revealed by God and goes beyond this world.”
