Broadening the Circle of Communion

I’m sure you are concerned, as am I, about the significant increase in racist and racist tending events in the recent past; too many to rehearse in a brief newsletter article. To show solidarity

with our ecumenical partners and take an important step toward fulfillment of our commitment to be a “Pro-reconciling /

Anti-racist” denomination, the office of the General Minister and President has called on

all Disciple congregations to observe a "Confession, Repentance and Commitment to End Racism" Sunday in the near future. I can

think of no better occasion to observe this significant event than World Communion

Sunday. We cannot, in fact, celebrate world communion until we achieve it in our own culture. Please begin to pray for an end to racism, and your role in making it real and

lasting. I hope you will join us on October 4 as we attempt to broaden the circle of communion.

Stewardship Focus: Live Free

They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may

take hold of the life that really is life. — 1 Timothy 6:18-19

During the month of October, we will celebrate our annual stewardship focus. The theme for

this year – Live Free – is taken from the invitation in 1 Timothy to “Take hold of the life that really is life.” The readiness to share with

others is a blessing, and truly a part of an authentic and joyful spiritual life. Please begin now to commune with God to discern just how much joy you will experience during the next

year. In keeping with our tradition, consecration Sunday on October 25 will feature a Chris

Reconciliation Ministry Special Offering

September 25 and October 4, 2015

God created us to live harmonious lives with each other. Currents events—police-community

relations, worshipers killed in Bible Study, churches burning, and churches providing safe

haven—offer abundant opportunity to move together and heal together as the body of Christ.

Your gifts to Reconciliation Ministry support Disciples' work for understanding and

harmony across racial divides.

"When you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has

something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift." (Matthew 5:23-24)

For more information about Reconciliation Ministry, see www.reconciliationministry.org

KC Region Lay Exchange Sunday

On September 20, our region is sponsoring a project to begin interaction and fellowship

between congregations in the region. We seek three volunteers to visit another congregation for worship on this Sunday. If you are interested, please contact the

receptionist office, and we will respond with the names of other team members, suggested

congregation to visit, worship times, etc.

Camp Songs Sing-along

Sunday, September 13, join us in the Sanctuary at 10:00 a.m. for a rousing good time of songs sung at summer camp! Laura’s sermon and songs in

worship that day will also have a camp song theme!

OPCC Volunteers “Thank You” Reception

Friday, September 25, 6:00 p.m. Fireside Room

All folks who volunteer in any capacity at OPCC are invited to a reception hosted by the Board to say “thanks” to all who make OPCC a wonderful worship community!

Are you the leader of a current small group here at OPCC? Are you interested in facilitating or leading a new small group here at OPCC? Are you tentatively interested, but not sure how to go about doing that?

We have the answer for you! OPCC will host a Small Group Leadership Training on Saturday,

September 19th at 9:00am in the Fireside Room. We will offer guidance and tips about creating

community, and keeping a small group going. Small Groups are such a vital part of our ministry here at OPCC, and so we know we need to support those

who help to lead and facilitate these groups. All who are interested in leading/facilitating small groups are invited to this training event. Please contact

Christina Crowe or Rev. Laura ([email protected] or ext. 222 on the church phone) for more

information or questions. We hope to see you there!

As part of our Visioning Process, OPCC is committed to a growing Small Group Ministry.

We are excited to announce the kick-off for this will take place on Sunday, October 11th following 10:30am worship service. You will have the

opportunity to learn about both existing and new small groups that form our family of faith here at

OPCC, and you will learn how to become involved with these groups and these new friends. While you build community, you will also have the opportunity to build an ice cream sundae! Come join us for a

sweet treat of both fellowship and fun! Ask Christina Crowe or Rev. Laura if you have any questions!

Blessing of the Animals

On Sunday, October 4th, OPCC will host a “Blessing of the Animals” at 2:00pm in the

Courtyard. There’s no guarantee this blessing will keep them from chewing on your couch or begging at the table, but we do know that God created all creatures; we give thanks for these creatures that

bring so much love and fun to our lives. All animals are welcome to come, even if they have received a blessing in the past. Make sure your animals are in

appropriate cages, carriers, and/or harness and leashes and we look forward to meeting these

extended members of your family! Also included will be a conversation about pet therapy and the ways that we might be able to become involved

in that style of ministry! Join us on Sunday, October 4th, at 2:00pm!

Burg, Barrel & Bible

This month’s Theology on Tap, Tuesday September 15th, will be held at a NEW location!

We will meet at Burg & Barrel at 76th & Metcalf at 6:00pm, and discuss some questions from the book, “The Answer to Bad Religion is Not No

Religion.” NO NEED to read the book unless you want to, we will use some of its topics for our own

discussion. Burg, Barrel & Bible is a great opportunity that takes God out of the walls of a church building and into the daily lives of young adults by offering a series of topics in a relaxed

and fun environment. It offers friends the opportunity to meet in a comfortable setting to explore faith, how it affects our lives and the

chance to get your fill on engaging topics and fellowship with a table-full of Young Adults – all at a great grill and bar location. (All ages of people are

invited, and we intentionally will also meet somewhere we can all enjoy a good meal!) Please contact Rev. Laura with any questions or concerns.

Stewardship Green Moment by Jody Cash

Going Green in September

A good family activity for going green is planning an autumn vegetable garden. Fast growing crops

in the cabbage family and sweet root crops are the best options.

Consider the average first frost date for your area and

of vegetable that you wish to plant. You can get this

Johnson County Extension office and talk to a master

the crop back from the date of the first frost and add 2 weeks (in the cool weather, some things grow slower than normal). This way, you will know the best time to

plant the various vegetables that you have chosen.

If you have a garden started, pull out plants that you have already harvested (such as onions, potatoes, etc.)

to make room for the vegetables you wish to plant. Doing this also prevents the vegetables that are through producing from taking moisture and nutrients from the soil that the new plants will need. If the soil has a lot of clay in it, work in something organic (such as compost

material) before you plant any new seeds or plants.

Most of your autumn vegetable garden will be started with seeds. This is an advantage of buying seeds in the fall—they are usually on sale by then! Wash the seeds

in a solution of one part bleach to 10 parts water in order to kill any organisms or diseases that might be on them.

When you first plant the seeds, keep them watered every day—about an inch of water a WEEK! Once the

plant is growing, just give it an inch of water once a week. Protect your new plants from frost by covering them if there might be a frost. Also, watch for holes in

the leaves which may indicate insects or disease. Treat insects or disease immediately.

If you want some vegetables that grow quickly in the fall, try planting arugula, spinach, mustard, turnips,

and crispy red radishes as these are ready in just over a month. Some vegetables that you can plant in late

summer and harvest in the fall are beets, carrots, green onions, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and kohlrabi. Spinach and kale can grow well into winter.

Keep spinach thinned out and don't pick spinach leaves during freezing weather. The following plants can

survive a frost if they are covered with a blanket or a cardboard box: beets, broccoli, brussel sprouts,

cabbage, carrots, collards, kale, kohlrabi, and leeks.

Planting a fall garden will be good for the environment as well as your bank account. It is an activity the entire family can participate in and will put good,

nutritious food on your table. Give it a try!

Prayer Chain

Did you know that OPCC has a telephone prayer chain? Would you be interested in participating in

this meaningful ministry of praying for others, especially when it is most needed? If you would like to be put on the telephone prayer chain, and join in our team of pray-ers, please contact the

church office ([email protected] or 913-677-4646) to be added to the list!

Volunteers for Worship

Several of you have reached out that you are interested in reading and helping during worship –

great! Thank you! If you are still interested in serving during worship, but have not yet

contacted us, please let us know. Would you be willing to serve as a liturgist and read either

scripture or a call to worship provided for you? No age requirement – anyone willing to read is

welcome! Please contact Rev. Laura if you would be interested and we will keep your name on a

list. We will arrange mutually agreeable days for you to serve so that it works with everyone’s

schedule. Please contact Laura by email ([email protected]) or phone (ext: 222).

It’s Time to Think About Holiday Turkeys!

One of the joys serving at our church’s Food Pantry is to watch

the faces of people as they receive a turkey for their family’s holiday meal. If you would like to

donate $10 (of course we will take any amount) to purchase a bird, please designate your gift by mentioning “Holiday

Turkeys” when submitting it to the church office.

OPCC hosts a Food Pantry every 2nd Tuesday of the month, 5:30-7:30pm (set-up that afternoon), and 4th Saturday, 9:30-11:30am (set-up the day

before). If you would like to volunteer with our Pantry, contact Jane Fletcher at 913-449-5785.
