Loved and known

“Jesus knows me, this I love,” read the church sign. That twist on

the classic children’s song emphasizes the importance of being

both loved and known. “It’s not one or the other; it’s hard truth and

ridiculous grace,” sings contemporary Christian artist Tauren Wells

in “Known.”

Timothy Keller, in The Meaning of Marriage, describes the

duality this way: “To be loved but not known is comforting but su-

perficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear.

But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved

by God. It is what we need more than anything. It liberates us from

pretense, humbles us out of our self-righteousness, and fortifies

us for any difficulty life can throw at us.”

Love and laughter go hand in hand!

Share these jokes with your beloved on February 14 — or whenever some humor can brighten a day!

The ACORNS January meeting/luncheon was held January 10th in the FLC dining room.

Ideas for future ACORNS activities were shared, and a tentative calendar was done for the

year.

The group also had a birthday celebration to celebrate everyone’s birthday for the entire

year exchanging white elephant gifts for each person to take home.

Our February meeting will be a Valentine’s Day celebration on Thursday, February 14 at

the church. Watch for more information in our church bulletin.

LEARN PRAY GIVE SERVE SUPPORT

February 11-17 is designated as Focus on WMU Week. OGBC is a missions-minded church and has been

blessed with women (past and present) who come alongside the church to accomplish the mission of

God. From preschoolers to adults, WMU provides relevant resources to learn about and pray for missions,

as well as opportunities to apply their knowledge and passion through giving, serving, and supporting

missions.

Missions are done with the feet of those who go, the knees of those who stay and pray, and the hands of

those who give.

Christian Symbol

CHI RHO — “Chi” and “rho” are the first two letters in the

Greek spelling for Christ (XPICTOC, pronounced “Christos”).

The blending of these two letters into one symbol formed a

“sacred monogram.” Early Christians created many such

symbols as codes to indicate their discipleship while avoid-

ing detection by Roman persecutors. Many variations of the

Chi Rho symbol exist, incorporating a cross, a shepherd’s

crook, the Greek letters alpha and omega, an anchor and other images.

Everybody eventually surrenders to something or some-

one. If not to God, you will surrender to the opinions or

expectations of others, to money, to resentment, to

fear or to your own pride, lusts or ego. You were de-

signed to worship God — and if you fail to worship him,

you will create other things (idols) to give your life to.

You are free to choose what you surrender to, but you

are not free from the consequences of that choice. E.

Stanley Jones said, “If you don’t surrender to Christ,

you surrender to chaos.”

—Rick Warren, The Purpose-Driven Life

Love asks nothing in return but seeks those who need

it. And who needs our love more than those who are

consumed with hatred and are utterly

devoid of love?

—Dietrich Bonhoeffer

I surrender!

Got love?
