INFRASTRUCTURE NORTH DECK – PART ONE: WINTER

It is winter. It is minus 28 degrees Celsius. In Finland. And you are on the beach. Hard to imagine?

These images are, none the less, part of the project named “North Deck” which SAL is currently involved in with our MV Svenja. The world-famous Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai has de-cided to expand its outdoor leisure area with a 10 000 m2 private luxury deck. As the hotel is constructed on an artificial peninsula, the North Deck will stretch in direct proximity from the hotel into the Arabian Gulf. The corporation behind Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah Group, contracted ADMARES Ltd, a specialist in luxury floating constructions, to create and construct the beach platform. The platform will be fixed on piles around the hotel and will boast several luxury facilities such as pools, bars, relaxing areas and restaurants.

Platform split into sections for transferADMARES surely faced a challenge: Designing such a large platform is one, but as it had to be manufactured in Finland and then later shipped to its destination in Dubai, it boosted another more practical question – how to transport it? Their solution was to manufacture it in six sections which could then be loaded in Rauma. SAL was brought in to provide a solution on how these

massive sections could be shipped. Each section has amazing dimensions to match up to the total area – the largest section measures 79 m outer length and is 35 m wide. The remaining pieces, too, have impressive dimensions ranging from 41 to 62 metres outer length and a width from 24 to 44 metres. The weight of the modules ranges from 415 to 740 tons. SAL’s solution was MV Svenja.

Eight pieces, stacked, with overhangThe loading operations took place during Christmas 2015. Work started at plus four degrees Celsius but ended up at minus 28 degrees Celsius when the vessel was moved by three tugs to the outer port of Rauma.

The highly complex constructions posed a massive undertaking for SAL to load, both for our engineers and our crew on board. Not only the severe temperatures were a challenge, we too had to take heavy duty equipment in use: our 26 metres lifting beam in order to lift the sections safely onto the deck of MV Svenja. Despite the large unobstructed deck space of MV Svenja, the platform sections created an impressive overhang on the vessel with an aft overhang of 16 metres, starboard overhang of 15 and portside overhang of nine metres. In total eight pieces, including the six beach platform parts and two land bridges, were stacked onto MV Svenja’s deck. Additionally, 24 business cabanas were loaded in the hold – summing up to a total cargo weight of 3500 tons. All in all a true heavy lift project as we like it in SAL.

Destination DubaiMV Svenja is now unloading in Dubai. Bringing the new beach of Burj Al Arab Hotel to its destination. To the summer. We’ll keep you posted on our endeavours in Dubai. In the next NEWS-BREEZE, however … D
