“Longevity is an asset in its own right for Gazprom Export”

Alexander Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Gazprom’s Management Committee and Director General of OOO Gazprom Export and Chairman of GM&T’s Board of Directors, reflects on forty years of Gazprom Export – and contemplates the future for natural gas.

This April, Gazprom Export celebrated 40 years and this round number is a good enough reason to not only look back at our history, but also towards our future.

Our company is globally known as the largest supplier of natural gas. The demand for gas in the modern world is predetermined by its many unique properties especially its environmental credentials ,which are significantly greater than some other hydrocarbons. Natural gas is the main energy source of the 21st century, a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly obvious by the day.

Established four decades ago in the former soviet union, Gazprom Export became a 100% subsidiary of Gazprom – the world’s largest natural gas producer – in 1991. in the 40 years since Gazprom Export was established, about 4 tcm of “blue fuel” have been supplied under long-term contracts to multiple partners. On average, almost a trillion cubic meters were supplied each decade! Throughout these years, regardless of political events, the economic and trade environment and natural disasters, our clients consistently received the gas volumes required for industrial and domestic use at prices agreed in advance.

Dependable and flexibleRussian gas exports have been very reliable thanks to our access to the large resource base in Russia and the extensive network of existing and new powerful pipelines – using the most advanced technologies. Among the major gas pipelines routed to our main markets – the Eu and Turkey – are the urengoy-Pomary-uzhgorod pipeline, the Yamal-Europe pipeline, the Blue stream pipeline, the Nord stream pipeline and the

future south stream pipeline. The south stream pipeline, together with the Nord stream pipeline that was commissioned in 2011, will enhance the reliability and flexibility of gas supplies to Europe, as our partners, customers and us – as the shippers – look to diversify our transit routes.

Gazprom Group is investing in export routes diversification to minimize the impact of any such risks on the reliability of our supplies. Gazprom Export is also making big steps towards expanding and creating gas storage facilities in Europe, particularly in Germany, Austria, serbia, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic, which will help optimise gas flow and increase energy security.

The gas industry has witnessed major changes over the past four decades — gas markets have grown and brought in new players and new products, the most noteworthy being liquefied natural gas (LNG).

New horizonsGazprom’s strategy has been focused on expanding into new overseas markets. The launch of the sakhalin-2 project facilitated the increased supply of LNG particularly to the Asia-Pacific region. Our planned LNG facility in Vladivostok with a capacity of 15 million tons by 2020 will further increase our production and exports to the growing and dynamic markets of Asia.

shale gas is attracting much attention today. its production has become a catalyst for the active use of gas in the us, sending a positive signal to the global energy industry and the environment. This unconventional gas offers opportunities, but it does not threaten Gazprom Group’s business as some claim. We have experience in the development of unconventional gas resources ourselves, but for us it is much more profitable to produce conventional gas, which is abundant in Russia.

As for Europe, there are good reasons to believe that local shale production will be limited and unable to solve the continent’s energy security issues. The cost of shale gas production is simply too high.

Looking aheadLooking into the future, we believe that gas pipelines will long serve as the vital route for reliable and secure energy supplies, primarily to Europe and China. Despite increasing competition our company was able to enter into preliminary contracts worth more than 4 tcm of gas is indisputable evidence of this. Natural gas is also increasingly replacing oil as a raw material in the chemical industry. Furthermore, the inevitable shift to gas as a fuel for global road and sea transportation will open up new opportunities. The world needs more efficient and environmentally friendly types of fuel. As a result the demand for natural gas as a greener fuel than coal and oil will continue to grow. Providing cleaner energy will contribute significantly to the safeguarding of the environment for future generations.

Ensuring stable and reliable energy supplies is our company’s main priority for the coming years and decades. We are looking forward with confidence.

GM&T promoting Russian involvement in LNG shipbuilding

On 21 June, under the auspices of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, GM&T signed a Letter of Intent for a Strategic Partnership for the construction of a number of LNG carriers with JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), on behalf of the Gazprom Group.

An Agreement for a strategic Partnership in the Classification and Certification of LNG Carriers with the Russian Maritime Register of shipping (Rs) and a Memorandum of understanding with ОАО sovcomflot (sCF) was also signed.

At the same ceremony, usC signed Technology Transfer Agreements regarding the exchange of technology with leading shipbuilding companies from south Korea, as well as a Memorandum of understanding with GTT, the world’s leading LNG cargo containment system developer.

These agreements are part of a strategic initiative to maximise Russian participation/involvement in all elements of LNG shipping activities of the Gazprom Group, including shipping technology development, shipbuilding, ship repairs, commercial operations and crewing.

One of the major goals of this initiative is the construction and development of usC’s Zvezda shipyard in Bolshoy Kamen, Primorskiy Region, Russia. The agreements are aimed at developing cooperation for Zvezda’s participation in the construction of up to 13 highly sophisticated ice-Class LNG vessels, due for delivery between 2017-2021 to accommodate the future needs of the Gazprom Group. it is intended that Zvezda will be involved in the construction of every vessel; producing basic blocks, mega blocks and LNG tank containment systems in partnership with one of the south Korean yards. Once the infrastructure at Zvezda has been developed, whole LNG vessels will be able to be built there from 2020.

Nikolai Grigoriev, GM&T’s Director of Global shipping & Logistics, said: “Today’s event has confirmed that the course we set back in 2010 to involve key Russian partners in the design and construction of the most advanced LNG vessels, in the development of highly qualified Russian LNG officers and ratings and in growing our global LNG trading business which now spans all markets and shipping routes including the Northern sea Route, was correct. We will continue moving towards our dream of Russian LNG being delivered to Gazprom’s customers around the world, on vessels built in Russia and operated by Russian seafarers.”

GM&T’s CEO takes centre stage at The Economist uK Energy summitOn 27 June, GM&T CEO Vitaly Vasilev spoke at The Economist UK Energy Summit held at the Marriott Hotel in London’s Grosvenor Square. The subject of his speech was the importance of the present and future role for gas in the UK’s energy mix.

During the course of his address, he highlighted three key issues:• the value of gas in the energy mix• its relative cost • the part it can play in combating climate change.

Addressing the issue of security of supply, Vitaly pointed out that, given the uK is no longer self-sufficient in gas or oil, it is inevitable that an increasing proportion of the uK’s energy supply will need to be imported.

He referred to the fact that Russia has been supplying gas to Europe for 40 years in all conditions and that people should not be concerned that Russia won’t be a reliable supplier in the future; approximately four trillion cubic metres of Russian gas has been exported to Europe since 1973. He also drew attention to the huge capital invested by Gazprom – from the pipeline network in Russia, to infrastructure in Europe extending to the uK. Gazprom’s investments include storage capacity in the uK, Netherlands and Germany, close to customers’ demand.

He acknowledged that affordability remains a concern, as energy prices have risen and global demand has increased. But even with costs of transport factored in, gas fired Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGTs) remain a much cheaper way of generating electricity than alternatives which are only financially viable because of massive amounts of subsidy given to them. And even with all the renewables available, gas would still be needed as a backup. For example, the generation cost for gas fired CCGTs is around £80/MWh. This compares to the rumoured strike price between the government and EDF of anything up to £100/MWh, £155 /MWH for offshore wind and

£280/MWh for solar. Vitaly also cautioned against falling into the trap of thinking that gas prices will always continue to rise, as, like any commodity, gas is cyclical too.

His comments on climate change referred to the fact that for gas, the carbon dioxide emissions per unit of electricity generated are half those of coal. “The uK could save 45 million tonnes of CO2 today simply by using existing gas fired plants more – that’s an immediate 32% saving on current CO2 emissions from gas and coal power generation which cause most of the uK’s power generation emissions.” This would simply involve increasing CCGT load factors to 80%, which is the level achieved through the late 1990s, from less than 50% today.

He also pointed out that, compared to nuclear and renewable, an increase in gas powered generation can be achieved quickly and cheaply because of the short timeframe of building new CCGTs and the unused capacity of existing plants.

Vitaly said he welcomed and supported the uK Government’s recognition of the role of gas in its Gas Generation strategy presented to Parliament last year. in particular GM&T supports the development of a Capacity Market to support investment in new CCGTs.

From an environmental perspective, he maintained that if we are serious about addressing climate change, the current trend of more coal-fired generation should be reversed immediately.

“Closing coal plants now, not just in the uK but across Europe, would result in immediate savings in CO2 emissions and improve the financial attractiveness of CCGTs today. Proposed legislation banning new plants with emissions above 0.45 kg/MWh will certainly drive this switch but so, too, would a better functioning emissions market.”

Applauding the intent behind the government’s carbon floor price, he suggested it might be better to focus on solving the problems of the Eu ETs, expressing the hope that MEPs take the upcoming opportunity to work on a permanent solution that will balance supply and demand and place the ETs back at the centre of Eu climate policy.

He drew attention to the fact the Committee on Climate Change has said that gas is a better choice for Carbon Capture and storage than coal, stressing that more gas fired generation today will reduce emissions now, create the back up needed for renewables tomorrow, and still keep the option open for zero emission generation via Carbon Capture and storage.

Welcoming the uK government’s recognition that gas has an important part to play in the uK energy mix, Vitaly stressed that the uK has nothing to fear about security of supply or the affordability of gas today or in the future.

“Gas is reliable, affordable and good for the environment. We have the opportunity to reduce our CO2 emissions today and at a price that is affordable to the uK economy. i am confident that this is a win-win for everyone.”

The award was collected at a gala dinner held in London in June. The award-winning submission focused on the successful passage of the Ob River through the Northern sea Route – the first LNG vessel to complete this voyage.

Historic first for GM&Tin November last year the Ob River left Hammerfest in Norway with a cargo of LNG bound for Japan. Normally, she would have headed south, passing through the suez Canal, but on this occasion she sailed east via the Arctic Ocean. After traversing the Northern sea Route (NsR) – which only became accessible to commercial shipping in recent years, as the polar ice cap has shrunk – the Ob River sailed past Alaska and into the Pacific Ocean. she docked at Tobata in Japan on 5 December, marking the first time a laden LNG tanker has traversed the NsR.

using the NsR meant the ship traversed a distance of 6,555 nautical miles, compared with 12,219 nautical miles via the suez Canal – a 46% reduction. A round-trip from Norway to Japan and back currently takes a tanker approximately 60 days, but the NsR will cut that time by about a third or 20 days.

Frédéric Barnaud, Executive Director of LNG, shipping & Logistics and Clean Energy at GM&T says that the innovation will ultimately create a tighter link between Arctic gas reserves and Asian markets. “There are quite a lot of gas fields on the northern side of Norway and Russia, which are going to be developed through LNG, while over on the other side of the world, the world’s largest LNG markets are Japan and south Korea. so having a better link to those markets is absolutely key.”

The first commercial cargo voyages through the NsR began in 2009, but were stepped-up in 2011. Typically only open from June to November, ships passing through the NsR must be escorted by icebreakers.

“The NsR has only really opened up to world trade in the past two years,” says Barnaud. “We had been looking for the right opportunity since then, but we had to make it commercially viable, rather than just putting a ship through to show that we could.”

innovation of the Year award for GM&T’s shipping & Logistics team continued

Reduced costsBesides fuel savings, the voyage reduced the costs associated with boil-off – the process by which LNG gradually evaporates while a tanker is at sea. in addition, suez Canal fees were avoided, as was the risk of being attacked by somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden. With its access to reserves in the Russian Arctic, Gazprom clearly has much to gain from the opening up of the NsR. “No LNG ship has ever sailed via the NsR before,” says Barnaud. “so this landmark passage has opened the way for the entire LNG industry.”

At the heart of the action: GM&T and the uEFA Champions League 2013

The UEFA Champions League is the most prestigious and lucrative club football competition in the world, bringing together the top performing clubs from across the globe in a six month long competition.

This year’s competition didn’t disappoint – millions of spectators were treated to a flurry of spectacular goals, last-ditch tackles and drama from the outset. The uEFA Champions League Final was held this year in London, at Wembley stadium; the seventh time it has been held at the stadium. The final featured Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund and was the first all-German final in the history of this special competition. As part of OAO Gazprom’s ongoing sponsorship programme with uEFA, GM&T found itself closer to the action than most; both on the day, and in the weeks leading up to the final itself.

Before the first kick of a ball, in the final, a number of Champions League themed events had taken place across London. These included the ‘Champions Festival’, a uEFA-sponsored initiative that took place between 23 and 26 May. The four-day festival was a resounding success, and offered members of the public the opportunity to take part in a range of activities and entertainment, all of which were geared towards improving the experience of those in London to celebrate the final.

The ‘Champions Festival’ provided a consistent backdrop as the excitement built in the week leading up to the final. The festival was also used to help promote the uEFA Women’s Champions League Final, held on Thursday 23 May between VFL Wolfsburg and Olympique Lyon at the home of Chelsea FC, stamford Bridge.

The final itself was a tense affair and was decided by a single goal; a penalty, scored by underdogs VFL Wolfsburg in the 73rd minute. As the winners lifted the trophy in the West stand of stamford Bridge, it was clear how much hard work and dedication had been put into the competition by those involved.

Football for Friendship

As Saturday 25 May drew closer, preparations were finalised and a number of high-profile VIPs flew into London for the weekend.

As part of OAO Gazprom’s ‘Football for Friendship’ project, 31 football teams comprising children from Russia, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Hungary, serbia, slovenia and the uK, also arrived in London to take part in a number of activities and attend the final itself. Franz Beckenbauer, Football for Friendship’s international Ambassador was also present. The project aims to instill respect for other cultures, nationalities and equality – whilst promoting a healthy lifestyle for young people through football.

The ‘Football for Friendship’ participants weren’t the only ones to savour the experience of a lifetime over the weekend. Five lucky Referee Escorts walked onto the pitch with match officials for the final. Of these, some were chosen by GM&T employees through an internal competition; the others via a Daily Telegraph competition.

Last but not least; the uEFA Champions League Final itself! The closely contested game was a fitting culmination to such a fantastic competition; the match was eventually decided by a very late Arjen Robben goal to give Bayern Munich a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund.

“ Like!” GM&T and social media

GM&T is committed to using social media as a way of ensuring our online audience remains up to date with the latest company news, employee experiences and job opportunities.

Our online audience has grown steadily over the past six months, as members of the public continue to engage with GM&T across the four main social media platforms we operate on; Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and YouTube. in part, this growing audience is reflective of the makeover our social media channels have undergone over the past few months.

social media provides GM&T with a global audience for a truly global company. it’s therefore important that all information on our social media channels is relevant, accurate, engaging and – above all – informative. in light of this, the ‘makeover’ of the past six months at GM&T has concentrated on ensuring clarity of GM&T’s company messaging and branding across all of our social media platforms. All of our channels have been updated with the latest company branding, imagery and messaging, thereby ensuring a clear and accurate message for our online audience.

This is an audience that, over the past few months, has continued to grow across all four of our social media platforms. steadily, the number of ‘likes’ on Facebook and ‘followers’ on Twitter and Linkedin has increased, alongside a marked increase in the number of people actively engaging with GM&T posts on our Facebook and Twitter pages. This was particularly apparent during the time of the uEFA Champions League Final in May, during which our social media channels experienced an uptake in interest in response to our football-themed posts for the week.

GM&T related posts, particularly those advertising our graduate intake for the coming year and other recruitment activities across the business, have also received a similarly high level of interest. Our YouTube channel also now hosts a range of company videos, both new and old, to emphasise what it is really like to work at GM&T; the number of views for these videos is also on the rise!

A winning strategy for GM&T’s Treasury team

On 20 June, over 200 people attended the sixth annual Adam Smith Awards Lunch, organised by Treasury Today magazine. GM&T won the Best Short Term Investment Strategy award, which was presented to Michal Kawski, Head of Treasury.

Centralisation of GM&T group’s liquidity in London led to a greater focus on investment function, given the size of portfolio that had to be managed. This still left the team with quite a few challenges to resolve:• Treasury and commodity trading exposures were not fully aggregated, and,•small choice of products approved while credit ratings of several banks

continued to fall.

GM&T undertook several steps to resolve the issues described above and to ensure a robust and market leading short term investment strategy. The team put particular focus on accurate cash forecasting, building appropriate bank relationships, development of iT systems supporting the process and extending the portfolio of available investment products.

Throughout the process, the investment Policy was updated and tightened. Thanks to tight controls and close collaboration with the GM&T Credit Department, KPis have been set for Treasury Asset Liability Management based on yield against market benchmarks, without putting company funds at risk. Cash Optimisation KPis have also been set for the Treasury Cash Management team to ensure there is no ‘trapped cash’ causing credit risk and loss of return.

This has given GM&T the ability to safely maximise returns on cash investments above the targeted benchmark. Benefits of the new approach include:• Reduced reliance on bank credit lines• Reduction in bank charges• Cost savings• ROi• improvement in company credit rating• Time taken to implement solution and realise benefits• Productivity gains• Process efficiencies• Yield enhancement• interest savings• Risk removed/mitigated
