As I write this reflection, we have just cleared up in Appleby Church after the Heritage Weekend, where we, along with a lot of other churches and heritage buildings, are especially open to the public each year for a weekend, as part of a national initiative. As St Lawrence’s church houses the tomb of Lady Anne Clifford we get a lot of visitors over the weekend, so we have some ‘stations’ to help visitors remember that the church is a place of prayer, and we also have free refreshments. This weekend was busy and provided much food for thought as we had lots of visitors who do not normally come into church, many of whom wrote prayers and lit a candle, and a few folk who asked for a chat. A number of people, during the many conversations over the weekend said that they did not feel they should come into the church as they ‘were not good people’ and ‘did not usually come to church at all and were not religious’ . It was a delight to be able to say to each one that none of us are ‘good people’ as we are all in need of forgiveness. Forgiveness, which God, through Jesus offers each of us with great love -before we even ask. Do you remember the tale of the Prodigal son, who returns to his father, who greets him from afar off with arms outstretched? The son knew he had not behaved well, but his father rushed to meet him ‘when he was still far off’ .Life in the world at the moment feels frightening to many of us, older and younger, with natural extreme weather events and financial worries, and large personalities wielding power who could make or break communities both locally, nationally and internationally. Where do we turn to in life when all seems bleak and out of control? God is there at all times, but to many he feels a very distant unreal being. But we have prompts to remind us of God’s continuing presence. We have the gift of the seasons- at this time of year there are harvest thanksgivings and a chance to thank God for the blessings of our life while praying for others over the world. As the light wanes earlier each evening, as we go in each weekday to say evening prayers, we can see the darkness lit up by the candles that have been lit in church that day. Candles which are symbols of prayers offered and of the reassurance that however dark things seem to be, there is forgiveness and the possibility of a new start, and a light shining in the darkness.

God BlessSarah Lunn, Rector.

Seeking Newsletter Delivery HelpThe Newsletter is brought to your house by one of our wonderful band of delivery volunteers – we have nearly 40 of these. As with any task, as time goes on some of these wish to hand on their task to others: if you think you could help as a deliverer please contact our Delivery Co-ordinators, Jan and Alan Meakin on 52407.Specifically, Heart of Eden would like to thank three long standing deliverers who have recently relinquished their positions: Many thanks to Tom Tarn, Elizabeth McGregor and Ted Seppings. Their rounds have now been taken over by new volunteers.

News from the ChurChes YYYYYYYYYYChristian Aid responds to those suffering in South Asia floodsChristian Aid is bringing emergency relief to families in India, Nepal and Bangladesh as more than a thousand people have been killed and 40 million more affected by floods. The charity has deployed £45,000 of emergency funds and is also using a further £200,000 from Irish Aid and the DFID-backed START fund to provide 4000 households with hygiene kits, tarpaulin, shelter materials and community water filters to provide safe drinking water. Elsewhere 20,000 families are being taught about good hygiene practices to protect themselves from diseases.Christian Aid’s Head of Humanitarian Programmes for Asia & Middle East, Madara Hettiarachchi, said she hoped people wouldn’t forget people in South Asia whilst floods in Texas were dominating the news agenda. ‘These are some of the worst floods we’ve seen in South Asia in decades and the impact is likely only going to get worse,’ she said. ‘Farms and livestock have been washed away so food security is going to be a huge problem in the coming days and we will likely see the death toll rise. ‘The good news is we are reaching people and bringing them the vital help they need to stay alive and begin to rebuild their lives.’St. Lawrence ApplebyChurchwardens: Jean HutchisonJohn Tillotson (53349)Secretary: Jo Ayres (52017)Craft Fair20th - 21 October in the church, see advertisement section.Pause in the PorchIf you do, look up to the wall on your left. A very small boy is commemorated there - Wilberforce Milner, born in 1838, only lived for a week. Look down - at your feet there is a large sandstone slab with the initials W.M. and the date 1838. His father was the vicar of St Lawrence. It looks as though there may have been some connection between the Milner family and William Wilberforce, the great anti-slavery campaigner. If true, that would account for the choice of name. On the opposite wall of the porch are two war memorials - the top one is to a victim of the Crimean War, the brass plate underneath it lists the men from Appleby who fought in the Boer War and commemorates Leonard Atkinson who died in South Africa. (This was put up very soon after the men returned - a stone memorial was erected outside St Michael’s Church in Bongate) There is also an ancient grave slab, sadly broken but carved in memory of one of our distant ancestors.

From the Choir Stalls. October brings Harvest Festival at St Lawrence’s on October 1st. The church will be beautifully decorated for the weekend, which also includes the Eden Swing Band Concert on September 30th. This is always a happy weekend – do join us at 10.45 for our Harvest Eucharist and have a good sing! Remember - All good gifts around us are sent from Heaven above. The other major event in October is our annual Craft Fair which this year is October 20th and 21st. The town was badly affected by flooding in Winter 2015/2016 leading to the Conservation Area being desginated as ‘at risk’. This initiated an application to Historic England to designate Appleby as a Heritage Action Zone (HAZ). This application was successful making Appleby the first Heritage Action Zone in the North West and the five year HAZ programme began on 1st April 2017. The focus of the Appleby HAZ is on boosting tourism in order to help grow the local economy. This includes regenerating some key buildings in the town, providing and enhancing things for visitors to see and do. It also covers the management of Appleby’s historic environment in order to ensure it is best maintained for future generations. • Boosting Tourism• Marketing Appleby• Tourism signage review• Appleby heritage town trail• Enhance tourism role at St Lawrence’s Church• Explore opportunities for development of the visitor

Age Concern ApplebyAge Concern Appleby will be undergoing some important changes at the end of September. Our adult clothes shop at 1 Cherry Row, Low Wiend will be closing and reopening at 28 Boroughgate in the middle of October. The exact date has yet to be decided. Our shop at 4 Low Wiend will continue as normal. At the end of October we will have also vacated our Chapel Street premise after being there for many years. Moving to Boroughgate will mean a considerable change for us and I do hope that all those who have supported us in the past will continue to do so in the future so that we in turn can continue to make grants and donations to local groups and charities to enhance the work that they do for folk in Appleby and the surrounding villagesI would also like to encourage anyone who would be interested in helping as a volunteer assistant in one or

other of our two shops or to help in the task of sorting through the many generous donations of goods in readiness for selling in the shops, to get in touch with myself on 017683 52133, or to call into either of the shops and ask for Joy or Audrey. YYYYYYYYYYYAppleby Town Council ReportAppleby Heritage CentreThe Mayor was honoured to be invited to open the 21st birthday celebrations of Appleby Heritage Centre. The day was blessed with fine weather and the attractions included vintage cars and tractors, miniature steam engines, trade stalls and a barbecue. Providing technical further education and much more in the unique setting of former railway stock, the Heritage Centre is a facility for which many are grateful and of which we can all be proud.

EdensideLast year the Town Council successfully applied to have the former Edenside care home registered as an asset of community value. This means that the owners, Cumbria County Council, cannot put the building on the open market if there is an intention to use it to the benefit of the community. On 8 September a locally-based charitable organisation did register an interest in doing so; they have until the end of the year to make a proposal.Heritage WeekendDespite frequent rain showers, Appleby attracted plenty of visitors – some local, some from faraway places - on the weekend of 9/10 September to enjoy the wealth of history the town can boast. Particular thanks are due to all those volunteers who gave of their time and expertise to provide a warm welcome and wonderful displays at the Moot Hall, St Lawrence’s Church and St Anne’s Hospital Moot Hall Bus StopAs reported elsewhere in this newsletter the restored 563 Monday-Friday off-peak Penrith-Appleby service is now running. The bus comes into Boroughgate, picking up/setting down at the Moot Hall at 0950, 1125 and 1425; on Wednesdays at 1457 the 561 from Kendal also sets down. Additionally the bus bays are used by coaches. Please do not park vehicles there, particularly at the scheduled times. The Miller Riches TrustCumbria County Council asks us to publicise this ancient local charity, which provides financial grants to spinsters and widows in need who have lived in the old county of Westmorland for at least 5 years. The grants are of up £75, which would in pre-pension Victorian times have kept someone going for a year! Anyone interested in applying should ring 01228227354 or write to: Holly English, Legal and Democratic Services, Cumbria CC, Cumbria House, Carlisle CA1 1RD. The deadline for returned applications is 27 October.Football and Cricket Coming Back HomeAfter a lot of difficulties, it looks as though remedial work on the flood-damaged King George’s Field has now been successful, enabling Appleby FC to return home, after having to finish their brilliant 2016-17 season and start the 2017-18 season playing home matches away. Necessary work on the nearby cricket field is on a bigger scale; the hope is to be back at some time in 2018, after two years of exile. Officials of both clubs have worked tirelessly in the face of numerous difficulties.Appleby Chamber of TradeThe Chamber will be meeting with the HAZ Officer for Appleby in late September to see how businesses can help and benefit from HAZ. Information Centre (51177) for further information. Spring is only six months away !Appleby SmarterAfter a busy summer applying paint to railings our efforts are now changing towards planting bulbs, trees and sweeping leaves and picking litter. We need to raise funds for our activities so a big thank you to the couple, who wish to remain anonymous, for a big cheque. Small donations are welcome too by leaving cash or cheques for Appleby Chamber of Trade at the Business Centre in Bridge Street. If you can suggest a piece of scrubby land about town that would benefit from some spring colour please contact the Tourist Information Centre with your name and site details.Upper Eden Food BankThe food bank has been running for nearly five years. For most of that time the donations provided by many individuals has been sufficient to meet the needs of the hungry in the area, who are referred to us by professional organisations. Unfortunately since January we have seen a doubling in demand for our service (as is being reported throughout the country) which the national food bank charity The Trussell Trust has reported as being caused by changes in the benefits system. In the three months March to May in 2016 the Upper Eden Food bank fed 45 people, the same three months in 2017 there has been 104 people fed so over double the amount. During the year from September 2016 to August 2017 a total of 214 people were fed, but the way things are at the moment this total is going to be greatly increased this year. If you are able to help, donations of any items from the list below can be brought to St Lawrence Church on Friday morning between 11 and 12, the Sands Methodist Church Appleby on Tuesday mornings between 10 and 10.30. We are also very grateful to Appleby Co-op who now have a collection box behind the counter. The following items are in very short supply or run out:-Instant Coffee-medTinned meatFruit Juice1 litre carton UHTInstant Mash potatoTinned tomatoesPasta sauceRice pudding/At the moment we have plenty of milk/ cereals / tinned fish / pasta

Friday Club Our first meeting after the summer break was an evening of drawing, with help and advice from one of our members’ brother. We all had a go at drawing our own hand, not as easy as it sounds! Then, we had to try and draw the person sitting opposite us. That caused a great deal of amusement, but fortunately no real offence!! It was then time for refreshments and comparing of our attempts at drawing. Our September coffee morning got off to a slow start, probably because of the weather, but it quickly got going and was a great success, thankyou everyone who attended.Dates for the diary as follows

Martin LutherOctober 31st marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the Wittenberg church door in 1517, signaling the start o f the Protestant Reformation. He was protesting against the practice of indulgences, where the good deeds of the saints could be purchased to reduce time spent in purgatory, before arriving in heaven. For Luther, this cheapened grace, repentance and forgiveness: ‘You can’t buy God’s friendship!’Luther rediscovered the truths of God’s grace: ‘For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed – a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith’.’ (Romans 1:17). He recognised that righteousness (being right with God) and forgiveness is not earned by good works, but faith. The undeserved love of God and his acceptance is a matter of trust. This challenge to the church of Luther’s day remains so today! At the Diet (Council) of Worms,

The Abbey

They thought things could not changeThe Abbey – always there; The mighty church, the nearby GrangeAll in the Abbott’s care. The massive, lofty towersThe daily services rotesThat filled their time’s repeating hoursWith long familiar notes. But then an angry kingTook issue with the PopeAnd soon those monks would cease to singAnd gone would be their hope. Today there’s little signOf their monastic homeNo evidence of church or shrineJust ruined walls and stone. So fix not life or loveUpon these things of earth; But look instead on things aboveOn God’s eternal worth. By Nigel Beeton

All Hallows Eve – or Holy EveningModern Halloween celebrations have their roots with the Celtic peoples of pre-Christian times. In those long-ago days, on the last night of October, the Celts celebrated the Festival of Samhain, or ‘Summer’s End’. The priests, or Druids, performed ceremonies to thank and honour the sun. For there was a very dark side to all this: Samhain also signalled the onset of winter, a time when it was feared that unfriendly ghosts, na tu re - sp i r i t s , and witches roamed the earth, creating mischief. So the Druid priests lit great bonfires and performed magic rites to ward off or appease these dark supernatural powers. Then the Romans arrived, and brought their Harvest Festival which honoured the Goddess Pomona with gifts of apples and nuts. The two festivals slowly merged. When Christianity arrived still later, it began to replace the Roman and Druid religions. 1st November - All Saints’ Day - was dedicated to all Christian Martyrs and Saints who had died. It was called ‘All Hallows’ Day’. The evening before became an evening of prayer and preparation and was called ‘All Hallows’ Eve’, The Holy Evening, later shortened to ‘Halloween’. For many centuries, however, fear of the supernatural remained strong. During the Middle Ages, animal costumes and frightening masks were worn to ward off the evil spirits of darkness on Halloween. Magic words and charms were used to keep away bad luck, and everybody believed that witches ride about on broomsticks. Fortune telling was popular, and predicting the future by the use of nuts and apples was so popular that Halloween is still sometimes known as Nutcrack Night or Snap-Apple Night.Today, Christians have learned to turn to prayer instead of charms to overcome the powers of darkness. And the deeper, true meaning of All Hallows’ Eve, should not be forgotten. As Christians, we all draw closer to Christ when we remember and give thanks for our loved ones and for others who have gone before us through the gates of death.

On the perils of trainers, high heels and soft shoes in church

The RectorySt. James the Least

My dear Nephew Darren

Having informed you of why clergy must always wear black shoes in church, my belief is that all those who hold any office in church should be similarly dressed.Altar servers have the tendency to arrive wearing what I am informed are called trainers. Were they black it would be tolerable, but they seem to be without exception either brilliant white or luminous pink. When they arrive so attired I insist they remove them and serve in the sanctuary in their socks. Since our church floor is several degrees colder than permafrost, it normally takes them the rest of the morning with their feet in a bucket of hot water before circulation returns. They do not make that mistake a second time. The rule applies to members of the choir also; my only concession is that ladies are allowed to wear shoes with heels. But that can present its own hazards. Miss Threlfall recently appeared in heels that, by chance, were the exact size and shape of the holes in our beautiful Victorian heating gratings in the nave floor. During the procession at the start of the Service, her heel wedged in one. She is a lady of some determination and refused to stop, thereby holding up the procession and letting the congregation know something was amiss. So she proceeded, now with a twelve inch square cast iron grid firmly attached to her foot. As she gallantly clanked up the aisle, rocking slightly since one leg was now several stones heavier, one of our basses, completely innocent of what had happened, stepped into thin air. Half of his body disappeared vertically downwards as the other half proceeded in a horizontal easterly direction, scattering tenors like skittles. I continue to visit him in hospital. Our organist arrives wearing black shoes, but once hidden in the organ loft, removes them and plays the organ in soft shoes. Or he did; these days he never removes his shoes at all. At Evensong on Sundays, my dog comes with me to swell the congregation and wanders round the church benignly as the Service progresses. After one Service, our organist came to retrieve his shoes only to find them missing. Their absence was inexplicable - until two weeks later when I found them buried in the Rectory rose garden.Churchwardens, of course, know the rules for correct footwear - that is why they have been elected to serve in such a distinguished office - although I do feel that Admiral Hopkinson’s practice of wearing white spats on top of his shoes when the bishop is here, a little excessive - even rather flash.Maintaining this dress policy once you have your own church, will be maintaining the true faith.

Your loving uncle,

Eustace
