Remember remember is the theme of November! We remember many people in the month. All Saints, All Souls ( the departed) Guy Fawkes, and, on Remembrance Sunday all who have given their lives in War. The festival of All Saints reminds us that all who have professed a Christian faith are part of a great company of people who have been touched by God and responded by living lives that in some measure give God glory. All Saints ! Saints are not very very holy people, so heavenly minded that they are no earthly use, seen as weak and rather silly looking with stained glass haloes like dinner plates. No! Anyone who has given their life to God, however tentatively, is called at saint in the New Testament. The early saints of the young church, the ordinary folk like each of us, were obviously engaged in quarrels about all sorts of things. They argued among themselves and with St Paul, as we see in his letters, especially the ones to the Corinthian church. They competed about which were the best gifts to have, which was the best leader or tradition to follow, or style of service, or meeting place or dress, and who could say what and when… not a lot has changed! Next remember All Souls, the departed saints, and they in turn remind us that we are not only concerned with time and space but also life beyond. We remember those who have lived their lives and moved, not away, but onwards. We often think of time in linear ways and we discuss time lines to show us where we fit in with history. With Remembrance Sunday are remembering the various battles and losses in the continuing centenary of the first world war and the anniversaries of subsequent wars –, those who have been injured or who have lost their lives, and yet life goes on. Chronological time. But there is also God time, Kairos time, breaking into our linear chronological time. God time breaks in and reminds us that there is a wider and deeper view to our lives, our loves, our memories. Remembering is important, as it brings the past together with the present, puts things back together, enlarges our view of the world and our faith. For those of us who take part in Communion services we remember at a deep level what we were commanded to do at the last Supper. ‘Do this in remembrance of me’. Take time in the remembering month to remember and give thanks, for all that we have had, do have and are yet to have.

Seeking Newsletter Delivery HelpThe Newsletter is brought to your house by one of our wonderful band of delivery volunteers – we have nearly 40 of these. As with any task, as time goes on some of these wish to hand on their task to others. The round has 42 copies. If you can help with this, please contact Mr & Mrs Meakin on 52407.ThanksThe Newsletter is now put into bundles ready for the distributors by a new group – organised by Alan Smyth of Walkers Funeral Directors. I would therefore like to thank the people who have helped with the ‘bundling’ task on a rota over the past few years – Jenny Morgan, Judith Heal, Jackie Constable, Lynn Miller, Andy Connell and Rev. News from the ChurChes Services for the BereavedThe time of the year has come again when we give thanks for the lives of those who have died. We will have one service this year on November 6th at 3.00pm in Appleby Church . There will be a chance for all who attend to light a candle in memory of a loved one. All are very welcome to attend. If you would like the name of a loved one to be remembered at a service, please write the name on a list at the back of church. Many thanks.

Seeking flood-event helpers at St. Lawrence’sWe are starting to think about a Flood Plan for St. Lawrence’s Church. We need to create a list of people who can assist when a flood is likely by lifting moveable items either on top of the pews or into the vestry. Can you help? You will need to be able to get to and from the church safely if a flood happens – and not be involved with flood-preparations at your own home. If you are on the list, you will be contacted if and when you are needed. If you can help, please contact me (John Tillotson) on 53349.

From the Choir Stalls: How many Sundays until Christmas? Getting fewer in number all too quickly! November sees the usual sort of things for this time of year happening in church – the annual service for the Faithful Departed. on November 6th at 3pm is always very special – do come, it’s a quiet service at which we remember those who left us during this year and previously. The following week, November 13th, is the Civic Service of Remembrance at 2.30 at which we always expect a good size congregation including the various uniformed organisations from Appleby. Then comes December with all the Christmas Events which will be itemised next month. However, in the meantime, the Torchlight Procession to ApplebyCastle and Carol Singing will be happening on Friday December 16th. Everyone welcomeNews from the areaAppleby Town Christmas Lights.Archie Spence is stepping down as Project Manager for the town’s Christmas Lights and so Appleby Community Acting Together ( ACAT) is looking for a volunteer or volunteers to take over the role. There is a terrific and committed group of volunteers from across the community who assist with all the processes involved in the Project and who simply need co-ordinating. There is also a decent set of lights which probably need further development. The Town Council recognise the need for funding to maintain this and give a grant towards the lights, money which is augmented by the fundraising efforts of ACAT as well as donations from local organisations. If you are interested in taking on the role or doing a job share with someone else then you can get more details and a copy of the current Project Plan from Archie. Age Concern ApplebyAn urgent request for prospective volunteers At the AGM of Age Concern Appleby which took place in May the Chairman made it known that he was prepared to continue as Chair for only one more year. We are hoping that someone in Appleby or the surrounding villages would consider taking on the role next May. We have a very loyal group of Trustees but we do need fresh blood to take the Charity into the future. The present Chair feels that, having filled that office since the start of the century it really is time for him to step down. He is, however, quite happy to continue as a Trustee. We would also like to take this opportunity to encourage anyone who would be interested in helping as a volunteer assistant in one or other of our two shops in Low Wiend, or to help in our premises in Chapel Street in the task of sorting through the many generous donations of goods in readiness for selling in the shops, to get in touch either with David Sampson on 017683 52133, or by calling in to either of the shops and asking for Joy or Audrey. During the past 16 years Age Concern Appleby has donated nearly £500,000 to local Groups and Charities. For this to continue in the future we need individuals to express an interest in helping so that we can build up a register of new volunteers that we can call upon. GENERALHOST is looking for kind, friendly, hospitable people of all ages whose imaginations are caught by the idea of welcoming an international student at university here, far from his or her own family, to their home, for a day, a weekend or at Christmas. You don’t need to live near a university, as students will travel for the privilege of meeting you, learning about real life in this country, and sharing their own culture. HOST is a voluntary activity which makes ambassadors for international goodwill of us all. Please see www.hostuk.org or call Kerrie Brooks 01697 324473. Thank youUpper Eden Food Bank:Food is received at The Sands Methodist Church on Tuesday mornings from 10 - 10.30am and at St. Lawrence’s Church on Friday mornings from 11 - 12 noon. YYYYYYYYYYYTown Council ReportEdensideOn 22 September the Cabinet of CCC voted unanimously to accept a report recommending the closure of Edenside, with residents evacuated to Greengarth remaining there for the time being. Appleby Town Council is deeply disappointed with what it regards as a poor decision based on a poor report that disregarded not only the overwhelming wish of the community but also Cumbria CC’s own technical report on the building. The decision is best understood in the context of the announcement a few days later of Cumbria’s wish to close several other of its residential care homes. Cumbria Peace RideMany residents will remember with appreciation the support the Appleby community received from volunteer members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association in the weeks following the December floods. On the weekend of October 8-9 about a hundred young Muslim cyclists took part in the Cumbria Peace Ride, which finished with lunch in Appleby Public Hall on the Sunday afternoon. The Association mounted a display of its work, inspired by its motto, ‘Love for All, Hatred for None’. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and other councillors and representatives of local organisations made the cyclists welcome. The 563 BusThe Council was shocked and disappointed to learn that Grand Prix Motors of Brough had informed Cumbria County Council that it would withdraw from operating the 563 bus service after 11th November. The stated reason was the company’s unwillingness to invest in a low-floor bus to replace one that is near the end of its life. The loss of this vital and generally well-used lifeline would impact badly on hundreds of lives. The local public transport review group, with representatives of numerous relevant bodies in attendance held its regular meeting on 14th October (the day this newsletter goes to press) at which the future of the service was the principal item. We will do all we can to keep the service going. But it must be understood that no bus services in Cumbria now receive any subsidy from the County Council. Operators run commercially, depending entirely on passenger loadings: as we have so often said, if you don’t use it, you lose it.Boundary CommissionFive years ago Parliament voted to reduce the number of MPs, with the result that Cumbrian representation would go down from 6 to 5. Every constituency has to have approximately 72,000 voters. The Boundary Commission held a public consultation to decide on the new constituency boundaries. They were published in 2013, but not implemented; they are expected to be finalised in 2018 after more consultation. Appleby and the upper Eden will no longer be in Penrith & Solway, but in Westmorland & Lonsdale, as they were before 1983; but Long Marton and Kirkby Thore stay with Penrith. These changes only affect parliamentary elections; local government wards and divisions will remain as they are.

Appleby Smarter Bulbs have been planted along the riverside by the Smarter group, Rotary and Guides so watch out for a great display in spring. We hope visitors will come to the town to admire the display. Work on retiling the roof of the Rail Station is taking place and a number of shop fronts have been renewed or repainted so the town is looking much smarter.Appleby EdiblesThe group has taken increased space in the polytunnel at the Appleby Heritage Centre to allow creation of more planter beds. If you fancy trying vegetable growing under cover contact the Appleby Heritage Centre by the railway station on 53350 Appleby Chamber of TradeAppleby Chamber of Trade have recently launched an initiative with The Library Service in Carlisle and Eden to help small businesses with their IT. Telephone 017683 53350 or e-mail [email protected] Station GardenVolunteer gardeners required - it will need at least two people to maintain and plant up the existing garden at the Appleby Railway Station.Volunteers will need to be reasonably fit - much of the garden is on a slope.Tools, storage and plants will be provided. The night of action involved over 170 officers, supported by numerous volunteers from watch

schemes and rural communities. In Cumbria, Eden, South lakes and Brampton the operation began just after dark. In Eden, after a police briefing at the Appleby and Hunter Lane police stations, 18 volunteers took up static points, and using a police radio, called in anything suspicious for officers to stop and check. No arrests were made in Cumbria, but last night ‘significant intelligence’ was gained from these stop checks. Sgt Mike James said, ‘These nights of action in Eden are crucial. Our volunteers are of vital importance; with ‘the many policing the few’ they create a drag-net. By denying travelling criminals this space to operate, we prevent them from stealing from otherwise vulnerable premises. It’s simple, and more operations will take place. We always need more volunteers to make this happen, so I’m asking anyone who might like to join in to contact us as soon as possible. Appleby ClubsAppleby-in-Westmorland Society‘It’s Not An Uniform, It’s An OverallThe title of Jackie Huck’s talk to the Appleby-in-Westmorland Society following their Annual General Meeting in the Public Hall Supper Room was about her experiences as a nursing cadet in the 1960s. Appropriately, Jackie had her audience in stitches with her experiences as a wearer of the garment in question, which was bright yellow, button-through with no waist, cushion-sized pockets and which trailed on the floor for all but the tallest recruits. In those unstructured days, ‘a great herd of people’ piled in without appointments, overwhelming the rookie cadets. The hospital seemed to be a mix of corridors and doors, behind which lay staircases which the cadets never seemed able to find. Jackie gave her audience a demonstration of running down one such corridor to answer a distant phone, not always successfully dodging the array of young men with their legs in plaster following motor-cycle accidents and causing the occasional cry of agony. She met characters such as ‘Sister Mandrake’, a charge nurse ‘with the face of a tiger whose tail had just been pulled’, a tall nurse ‘bent over like an ostrich about to peck’ and one with a bedside manner ‘like a dog with rabies’ These and other never-to-be forgotten individuals she met along the way were full of strictures to the yellow-clad cadets, such as carrying, not wearing their cloaks on hospital premises and having their overalls a regulation height from the floor when kneeling, ‘so as not to show a suspender or glimpse of a knicker’.In spite of it all, Jackie survived cadetship until her 18th birthday when she graduated into wearing blue – after all, ‘a uniform, not an overall’. Lights, Camera, ApplebyOur November screening on Remembrance Sunday, is the 1946 David Niven classic, A Matter of Life and Death (U). The film is a playful wartime fantasy where a World War Two pilot (David Niven) miraculously escapes death after baling out of a burning plane. A celestial court is set up to judge his case while Niven hangs in limbo between a technicolor earth and a monochrome heaven. Combining comedy, romance and drama, this heartwarming fantasy from director Michael Powell puts the emphasis on celebrating life over fearing death, an important message for an audience that was then newly emerged from a terrible war.A Matter of Life and Death will be at Appleby Public Hall, Sunday 13 November, 7pm. Food & Film £10 – A delicious pie and peas supper plus pudding, from Appleby’s own Low Howgill Butcher & Deli. Vegetarian option available. Please book food tickets in advance. Doors open at 6pm, food will be served at 6.15pm. Film only tickets £4 are available on the door and in advance from Appleby Tourist Information Centre & the Courtyard Gallery, Appleby.
