Vintage Fashion: When It’s Hot, and When It’s Not Countless times I have heard concern from those in the vintage fashion community, myself included, that they weren’t doing well professionally. It happens to everyone. It’s not always about what you offer, it’s not always that you are doing something wrong, and it’s not always that others are doing something better. It comes and goes in cycles. The longer you are in your profession the greater your chances are of having some times when you are up and some times when you are down. When you are down, keep on going. Your strength and determination will push you through and you will find yourself right back on top. Yours Truly, Caryn McGregor Vintage Fashion Guild President

The Modern Classic Society, along with Lindenwood University’s Fashion and Business Entrepreneurship department, will attend Nelly Don the Musical at the Crown Center in Kansas City Missouri in March.

The above attendees are celebrating the life and legacy of Nell Quinlan Donnelly aka “Nelly Don”, a Lindenwood alum (1907-1909), famous Kansas City dressmaker and visionary educational leader for women.

Nelly Don’s great-great nephew, Terence O’Malley is given credit and recognition for the historic development and production of Nelly Don the Musical.

Dr. Lisa S. Thompson, founder of The Modern Classic Society, features her research study titled Nelly Don: An Educational Leader. Thompson’s research revealed evidence that further acknowledged Mrs. Nell Quinlan (Donnelly) Reed as a revolutionary 20th century dressmaker and owner of Donnelly Garment Company, as well as a visionary educational leader and dutiful benefactor at Lindenwood (College) University for over sixty years.

The Modern Classic Society has collected over 25 Nelly Don dresses, dated from the early 1920s to the 1970s. For more details about Nelly Don the Musical, visit www.NellyDon.com

L’Asie Rêvée d’Yves Saint Laurent

By Karin Marty • willynillyart

I saw this excellent exhibition last November at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent in Paris. This was their first temporary exhibition after the museum had been remodeled and enlarged.

It focused on Saint Laurent’s Asian inspired designs and was grouped into several themes: Imperial China, Floral China, India, Opium and Japan. Between his own fantastic designs, there were also antiques and antique garments on show from his own collection, plus photos from runway shows, beautiful drawings and pages from the design books.

It was fascinating to see the finished garment and beside it, the page with the original design drawing, notes on fabric and notions, complete with prices for each. You do not usually get to see this far “behind the scenes” in fashion exhibitions.

Opium of course focused on the perfume of the same name and showed how the bottle and advertising campaign were created. Rich colors and fantastic fabrics like silk, lame, velvet, plus rhinestones and embroideries were everywhere – it was pure eye candy!

My favorite parts were Floral China, because of the colors, and India, again for the colors and especially also the color combinations (who ever thought of blue, fuchsia, orange red and golden yellow together!) – which is why he is one of my favorite designers anyway.

What I also loved was that most garments were not behind glass, so that even in the darker exhibition rooms, it was easy to see details. Another highlight was Yves Saint Laurent’s studio, which has been made accessible as well. It really looks like he only just left. What impressed me most about it were probably the shelves full of art books. I’d love to have a nose through there!

I had been to the museum once before, before it was remodeled. I really like how it is now – it isn’t huge, but they manage to show quite a lot in that space, and it looks like this is a museum that will be open most time of the year, except when they change exhibitions. And with that collection, there will surely be many more interesting exhibitions to follow!

Hallmarks On Vintage Gold, Silver & Platinum Jewelry

By Francis Marzilli, Registered Gemologist Appraiser • Marzilli Vintage Interpreting hallmarks on vintage and antique jewelry can be a daunting task, particularly in today’s global economy, where trading in gold and silver objects from all over the world is common for even very small businesses. Complicating things is the fact that standards, marking requirements, and systems used to measure and assign value to precious metals, differ from country-to-country. Thankfully, all of the various systems most commonly seen in the vintage and antique jewelry industry today, are based on either a scale of parts-per-thousand or, in the case of gold objects, as a ratio of gold to other metals in a specific gold alloy. Gold Purity Marks Gold purity (fineness) in some countries is described by a scale of Karats (spelled “carats” outside of North America), with pure or 24 karat gold, at the top. Other common purities include 18K, 14K, 12K, 10K and 9K. Most countries, particularly in Europe, express gold fineness in parts-per-thousand, with 24K(ct) gold corresponding to 999.9, 18K gold to 750, 14K to 585, and 10K to 417. Though this may seem complicated at first, consider that 18 is 75% of 24, and 750, the European mark for 18K gold, can also be expressed as 75% of 1,000. Using 14K gold as an example, 14 is 58.5 percent of 24, and 585, the European mark for 14k gold, can be expressed as 58.5% of 1,000. The following chart should help make this clear.

Page 11: The New Vintage Fashion Guild Shop€¦ · The New Vintage Fashion Guild Shop . ... Marty; an instructional “how-to” article on deciphering hallmarks on vintage and antique jewelry

11

Although most vintage and antique jewelry will be marked using one of these systems, some countries, most notably France as seen below, use pictographs to indicate purity (courtesy 925-1000.com):

Jewelry from the middle of the 20th Century and later can be marked with both systems, like this 14k gold ring from the 1980’s which is marked “14k” and “585”.

Page 12: The New Vintage Fashion Guild Shop€¦ · The New Vintage Fashion Guild Shop . ... Marty; an instructional “how-to” article on deciphering hallmarks on vintage and antique jewelry

12

There are also numerous marks on jewelry that is plated with a layer of gold over silver (vermeil) or a base metal. These can include a karat designation and should not be confused with the marks “14KP,” or “14P” – the “p” meaning plumb and indicating that the gold purity has been calculated and is guaranteed precise to the designated mark. Some common examples in order of heaviest to lightest gold plating.

• G.F. - Gold Filled

• 1/20 12k (10K, 14k, 18k, etc.) G.F. - A very common mark indicating an item’s total weight is 1/20th or 5%, 12k gold.

• H.G.E. or H.G.P. - Heavy Gold Electroplate (Plate)

This “14K Plumb" mark indicates a purity guarantee of at least 14k gold.

This mark indicates an object with a heavy electroplating of 18k gold.

Page 13: The New Vintage Fashion Guild Shop€¦ · The New Vintage Fashion Guild Shop . ... Marty; an instructional “how-to” article on deciphering hallmarks on vintage and antique jewelry

13

Silver Purity Marks Marks on silver and platinum are a little easier to decipher, again with the exception of France and a few other countries that use pictographs.

• 800 - 800/1000 - 80% pure silver • 925 - 925/1000 - 92.5% pure silver • 980 - 980/1000 - 98% pure silver • 999 - 999/1000 - 99% pure silver

Other marks on silver include “Coin,” which is 90% pure silver, “Sterling, Ster., 925S or Sterling Silver for 925/1000, or 92.5 percent pure silver, and numerous other three-digit marks, all indicating pureness using the above systems as in: 835 - 835/100 - 83.5% pure silver, etc. A mid-century David Andersen pendant showing both “Sterling” and “925 S” marks.

A “950” mark.

Page 14: The New Vintage Fashion Guild Shop€¦ · The New Vintage Fashion Guild Shop . ... Marty; an instructional “how-to” article on deciphering hallmarks on vintage and antique jewelry

14

Platinum Purity Marks Other marks on platinum may or may not include a percentage and/or a second metal, most commonly palladium or iridium. Some examples are “Plat” or “850 (900, 950) Plat” for objects that are 85, 90 or 95% platinum, “900Plat - 100Irid” for an alloy of 90% platinum and 10% Iridium, and “900Plat - 100Pd” for 90% platinum and 10% palladium.

• 850 - 850/1000 - 85% pure platinum • 900 - 900/1000 - 90% pure platinum • 950 - 950/1000 - 95% pure platinum • 999 - 999/1000 - 99.9 percent pure platinum

The standard for marking jewelry with any platinum designation is a minimum of 85% purity, so this ring may be as much as 15% iridium, palladium or a similar metal.

This Art Deco ring is 90% platinum and 10% iridium.

Earlier pieces made before strict standards became widespread, may be stamped with one or more of the above marks, marked in an archaic system or symbol, or not marked at all. For unmarked items or marks that resist one’s most diligent efforts to identify, testing for purity either using acids or an electronic tester are necessary. Countries using pictographs can be problematic and require reference resources, books or appropriate Internet sites, where these may be researched and identified.

Although a full and thorough knowledge of marks on antique and vintage jewelry requires a long and exhaustive effort, some variation of the marks discussed here will be found on the vast majority of jewelry one sees in today's marketplace. Together, they represent a good working knowledge of the basics as well as an important context for deciphering those anomalies we all run into from time-to-time. All images © Francis Marzilli. The Ultimate Luxury Fashion History Tour to England

By Charlotte Smith, Fashion Anthropologist • The Charlotte Smith Fashion Collection Sharing my passion for fashion history is a cornerstone for why I continually curate exhibitions of my collection, The Charlotte Smith Fashion Collection (formerly known as The Darnell Collection). Yet, when I’m asked to share my knowledge, my industry friends and colleagues, and my favourite haunts in beautiful parts of the world without having to set up a single mannequin or steam a single gown, I get extra excited. So, last year, after an Australian tour company approached me to curate and then guide a fashion history tour anywhere in the world, I jumped at the chance and chose England, home to some of the great museums, fashion collections and textile experts on earth, as well as being my home for many years. I also chose England because of the stunning ‘Austen-esque’ countryside through which we could travel, the grand country house hotels in which we could stay and the restaurants at which we could enjoy some of the finest food served in the country. I chose England because it is respected for its fashion culture and also because I want to share the secret corners as well as the most beloved ones I have discovered.

The Tour This tour is definitely the first-ever dedicated to fashion history. It is a unique opportunity to experience fashion (and social) history from a behind-the-scenes perspective and meet with curators and historians who have created bespoke lectures and private viewings just for us. For example, Edwina Ehrman, Head Curator of Fashion at the Victoria & Albert, author of twenty fashion books and curator of numerous mega exhibitions, will give us an intimate look at precious archive pieces as well as talk us through their histories. Rebecca Shawcross, Head Curator at the Northampton Shoe Museum, will bring out a rare and priceless selection of shoes from the collection and talk us through a timeline of shoe history.

At Allhallows Lace Museum, we will not only look at examples of delicate antique Honiton lace, but also enjoy watching artisans make lace, continuing the Honiton lace making tradition. And much to my delight, Elly Summers, Exhibition Curator at The Fashion Museum in Bath, will work with our group in their textile room, allowing us to get up close with rare items from the collection.

Of course, a visit to the Beatles Museum will give us psychedelic colour while a visit to the National Trust’s Berrington Hall near Leominster to see ‘The Shirt’, Mr Darcy’s ‘lake’ shirt, will give us a contemplative swoon moment. We will also visit a lesser known, but no less wonderful historic fashion museum, Totnes Fashion and Textile Museum, in South Devon as we travel to Dartmouth and Agatha Christie’s house, followed by dinner at the top class fish restaurant, The Seahorse. Housed in a Tudor merchant’s home, mid way up the steep incline that makes Totnes High Street, is this unique fashion museum, housed in a

But aside from fashion (just in case any non-fashion obsessed gentlemen or women would like to join us!), this tour also offers a 5-star travel and lifestyle experience - from our luxury coaches and ground tour operator ready to help with our every whim to the architecturally magnificent hotels in which we stay and dine. We visit renowned English gardens, historic villages, majestic cathedrals and stately homes. Every other night, a friend or colleague will join us for dinner and give a special private talk just for our group. Highlights One of the highlights will be two nights (we stay in each hotel for two nights to ensure a relaxed journey as well as dine one night in the hotel’s restaurant) at Bovey Castle Hotel, set on the edge of Dartmoor, the setting for Agatha Christies’ A.B.C. Murders and Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility.

building worthy of being a museum itself.

We also stay at the 5 star Royal Crescent Hotel that sits high above Bath city giving us glorious views as we dine both nights in the hotel’s elegant restaurant, The Dower House. As well, later in the trip, we relax at the Edwardian Baroque-style Midland Hotel in Manchester, an establishment that has welcomed royalty, politicians and music legends since 1903. There are so many incredible things I plan to do with you, my fellow fashion history buffs, that this will be an adventure of a lifetime. And I have a few surprises up my sleeve too. For anyone who is familiar with one of my cherished charities, for which I am an Ambassador here in Australia, a percentage of proceeds from bookings will be donated to Dress for Success Sydney. I really look forward to welcoming each and every one of you on this fashion history journey to one of my favourite countries. It will be a pleasure to share this experience with you all. If you are travelling from Australia (where I live!) and would like to book your own flight, we have a ‘Land Only Price’. For anyone travelling from another country and would like to meet us in London, please contact me for a ‘Land Only Price’ price that excludes airfare and our first overnight experience in Doha on our way to London. A beautiful online brochure, in flipbook format, can be seen at www.thecharlottesmithfashioncollection.com

Or contact me at [email protected] So … meet me in London on Sunday, August 4th, 2019! We will have an extraordinary time together.
