The Nacala Corridor

Consists of :

– The Port of Nacala, the central element of the Corridor;

– The Railway network system in the North of Mozambique;

– The Railway network system in Malawi;

– The Chipata-Mchinji railway line that links the Corridor to Zambia;

– The road system in the North of Mozambique.

Company Profile

Portos do Norte, S.A. is a private Mozambican company, whose main objective includes the management and operation of the Port of Nacala, the central core element of the Nacala Corridor.

The main activities include:

A) the operation and maintenance of the port facilities;

B) receiving, handling and storing all types of cargo;

C) marketing of services; and

D) management of port facilities.

To be the Port of reference for the logistics chains on the East African Coast.

PORT OF NACALA

Port of Nacala

The Port of Nacala is situated in the northern region of Mozambique (Nacala), south of the Bengo Bay, a wide and sheltered bay that is 60 m deep and 800 m wide. It is the only natural deep water port in Mozambique and the largest deep water port on the eastern coast of Africa. Because of its natural deep waters and privileged position, Nacala has no restrictions on ship movement or size, therefore able to receive ships 24 hours a day with no limitations.

The Port services include:

Handling of dry and liquid bulk

Receipt, storage and dispatch of national and in transit goods

Loading and unloading of ships

- A General Cargo Terminal with four quays, capable of handling 2.400.00 tons per annum.

- A Container Terminal with two quays, with the capacity to handle 100.000 TEUs per annum

- A Bulk Liquid Terminal linked to fuel and vegetable oil deposits.

• 2 trucks 2.5 tons • 5 hoppers • 2 spillways • 8 grabs 3m³ • 2 grabs 8m³ • Bagging machines available on request

• Two quays, with the capacity to handle 100.000 TEUs yearly; • Quay : 372 m in length; • Maximum draft 15M at low tide; • Storage capacity of 5,722 TEUs.

• 11 forklifts (Reach Stacker) 42 tons with a telescopic separator for the 20’ and 40’ feet containers.

• 01 forklifts 16 tons for empty containers. • Trucks for movement of containers .

Why Nacala

• It is a natural deep water Port with no restrictions on ship entry and exit;

• It is connected to road and rail network systems that serve the North of Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia ;

• It has a privileged strategic position

considering that it is on the main route for cargoes such as coal, fruits, agricultural products and oil.

known as SEZ.

The creation of a hub of economic and social development in the northern region of the country, through the creation of the Nacala Special Economic Zone (SEZ), with favorable tax and customs, in order to strengthen the economic activities of the region and attract domestic and foreign investments for different projects in all economic and social sectors.

THE JICA PROJECT

The project involves the Mozambique and Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) entering a partnership, in which JICA will provide technical and financial support for the development of the Nacala Port. The project aims to increase productivity in cargo handling at the Port, which in return will contribute to the economic development and poverty reduction in the northern region as well as its neighboring countries Malawi and Zambia.

Development Projects

The project will take place in 3 phases: The first phase will consist repairing of the north quay pavement;a new area for containers; 2 Reachstakers; 2 RTG; repairing of the liquid bulk quay and installation of firefighting equipment. The second and third phase will be allocated to construction work that will include the extension of a dedicated container berth, building of an access road for traffic; and repairing of the area dedicated to containers.
