This month’s edition of Al Fahal features several stories about two of our key focus areas: road safety and renewable energy.

The achievement by PDO and its contractors to drive more than 500 million kilometres without a work-related motor vehicle fatal incident is something in which we should all take great pride.

The milestone reflects an ongoing effort across the board through multiple initiatives to improve driving standards. The introduction of the Journey Management Control Centre in 2016 has undoubtedly played a significant role in our progress, bringing about a 97% drop in average violations per vehicle and securing a major improvement in logistics performance.

However, we must never become complacent about this success. It is the result of much planning, hard work, organisation and dedication and we still have much to do to achieve our Goal Zero target. We will continue to roll out initiatives this year to sustain the momentum, including an E-journey pilot in Fahud and Qarn Alam, and in-cab cameras to monitor driver behaviour and fatigue management.

I’d also like to draw your attention to the good progress which is being made on the installation of solar self-lit reflectors on PDO and government network roads. The sun-powered “cat’s eye” devices are playing an invaluable role in illuminating more than 1,000 kilometres at night and in inclement weather conditions. This ingenious device has played a key role in saving lives and will undoubtedly contribute to making our road network safer.

Of course, more generally, solar power will play an ever more important role and the official inauguration of the Miraah project, also featured in these pages, is a real statement of intent. The renewable energy showpiece provides a simple yet innovative solution that allows us to develop our heavy oil, while at the same time reducing energy consumption and costs.

Last but not least, hats off to our Well Engineering Directorate, which recently celebrated its annual conference. In 2017, the directorate yet again expanded its workload and improved productivity despite budgetary constraints resulting from the low oil price environment.

Through further embedding Lean business efficiency in its operations, an increased focus on the well delivery process and safety and automation, staff and contractors made impressive progress, exceeding expectations on many of its targets. The team represents a fantastic example of the continuous improvement mindset which we must all develop if we are to take PDO to the next level.

PDO has hosted His Highness Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said, Personal Adviser to His Majesty and Chairman of The Research Council, and his delegation on an official visit to Mina Al Fahal.

Managing Director Raoul Restucci gave an overview of the Company’s production, exploration and ICV activities and major projects, such as Miraah and the Nimr reed beds. His Highness also toured PDO Knowledge World.

Raoul said: “I am pleased to say His Highness was very impressed by our collective efforts, and showed particular interest in our support of research and development initiatives.”

More than 25 Hazard Hunts were conducted last year at various worksite locations across the business including workshops, construction sites, catering, logistics, and operational production areas.Over 200 front line staff were engaged in the process and further hunts will take place this year as part of the corporate HSE business plan to reduce accident frequency.To be able to reach thousands of personnel across the Company’s operations, it is necessary to coach others to deliver the Hazard Hunt implementation plan, so PDO has now launched a coaching programme for all HSE staff and other HSE-critical positions, such as supervisors.Hazard Hunt activity is also being recorded in the performance contracts of key HSE staff and it will also form part of the HSE adviser competence profile to ensure the sustainability of this most important activity.The Hazard Hunt currently focuses on PDO’s top nine hazard exposures, as identified by HSE data and specifically Lost Time Injuries, such as working at heights, dropped objects and lifting and hoisting.The vision of the corporate Health, Safety and Environment team is to embed the Hazard Hunt in all activities across the business to improve HSE performance, with a mature system up and running by 2020. The 2018 programme commenced with the first visit to Ras Al Hamra (RAH) development project Phase 2 (C). This first was supported by Finance Director Haifa Al Khaifi, who is also Champion for Contractor HSE Management in PDO.Hazard Hunting is conducted through site walkabouts, observations, hands-on activities

and collaboration with HSE specialists, and also, more importantly, with the front line workforce.Senior Contract HSE Adviser Haitham Yahyai said: “To achieve the vision we are depending on all our colleagues to take a full and active part in Hazard Hunt activities. PDO and its contractors have driven more than 500 million kilometres without a work-related motor vehicle fatal incident. Managing Director Raoul Restucci said the achievement was the result of multiple road safety initiatives including:• Continuous improvement of the Defensive

development of the OPAL Road Safety Standard for the industry

• Support for Road Safety teams that help monitor traffic compliance and provide valuable support across the fleet

Another significant enabler has been the introduction of the Journey Management Control Centre, which tracks and monitors more than 8,500 vehicle movements at any one time. Since its opening in 2016, there has been a

Other new initiatives include lateral-skidding to manage roll-overs, in-cab cameras to monitor driver behaviour and fatigue management to monitor their alertness. A blueprint for a Rent-a-Car project is also being finalised. This concept will allow visitors to Interior locations to hire a vehicle fully compliant with the SP-2000 specification, and equipped with a navigation system, from the three PDO airports at Fahud, Qarn Alam and Marmul.• See also page 5.

Banat Oman Kiosk OpensHis Excellency Dr Mohammed Al Rumhy, Minister of Oil and Gas, has officially opened a retail outlet selling products made by women from PDO’s social enterprise Banat Oman.

Banat Oman is a vocational training initiative established to provide low-income women with the skills they need for sustainable employment, and has trained more than 300 to date.

The Company, in partnership with the Omani Women’s Association, has invested in programmes teaching various traditional handicrafts, such as tailoring and embroidery, dairy and bakery products manufacture, leather craft, camel bone carving and jewellery design. The kiosk, located on the second floor of Muscat Grand Mall, sells made-in-Oman goods, souvenirs and keepsakes, including silver gifts, palm tree products, leather handbags, greeting cards, and jam and cheese. It will be open daily from 10 am to 10 pm.


The Well Engineering Directorate has expanded its workload and improved productivity despite budgetary constraints resulting from the low oil price environment.Through further embedding Lean business efficiency in its operations, an increased focus on the well delivery process and safety and automation, staff and contractors made impressive progress in 2017.The directorate drilled 626 wells, six above the plan, and made more than 21,000 completion and well interventions (CWI) – 1,400 more than 2016 – a 7% rise.It also achieved the lowest cost per metre drilled since 2010, and the average cost of a well fell by 4%. Non-Productive Time (NPT) for CWI was maintained at below 7%, and fell to 5.2% for well and reservoir management, a record.Addressing the directorate’s annual conference, Well Engineering Director Mohammed Al Rashdi said: “As we close the books on 2017, it is worthwhile taking stock to see how much we have achieved: on business delivery we have exceeded our expectations on many of our targets despite the challenges posed by the low oil price environment; this was to a large extent thanks to the adoption of Lean principles and tools and increased focus on the well delivery process.“We have made major strides in our automation journey towards our vision of having all our processes optimised and automated by 2020. Automation continues to bring about huge efficiencies, improved compliance and overall assurance.”However, commenting on the work-related fatality of a contractor chief mechanic at Bahja last August, he said: “It takes pride from everything we have achieved.” While highlighting the achievement of 94 days without a Lost Time Injury (19 days longer than the previous record set in 2013), Mohammed spoke of the ongoing need to enhance safety leadership by focusing on behaviour and communicating more effectively. In this respect,he said programmes such as

the in-house behaviour-based Ihtimam system, training for frontline supervisors and the Journey Management Control Centre are playing crucial roles in delivering on-site safety and on the roads. For example, the average number of violations per vehicle in the fleet of more than 8,500 vehicles has fallen by 97% since the centre opened in 2016.The directorate operates 46 rigs, 35 hoists and 80 well intervention units, for example for fracking and well testing, with 580 rig moves covering 15,680 kilometres in 2017.All PDO-owned units are now operational and delivering beyond expectation. The PDO In-sourcing project – launched to boost operational performance and competency among Omani well engineers – saw rigs delivering nine more wells than planned and hoists making 25% more interventions than scheduled with 91% of the budget.

Hundreds of staff packed into the Mina Al Fahal sports hall for the event. There were frequent rounds of applause as the directorate’s “personalities” were commended for their contribution during the year.Trainee Well Site Engineer Ahmed Al Lawati won a standing ovation for his speech outlining his journey from roustabout to assistant driller. He thanked PDO for giving him the opportunity and helping him to develop his skills, and declared his strong commitment to safety.

Managing Director Raoul Restucci was full of praise for the directorate’s performance, saying: “In 2011, when oil was US$110 a barrel, we carried out 11,000 activities. We have doubled that with the same resources through a constant focus on rigour, end-to-end integration and leadership in action.“Collaboration with contractors has been so key – listening to our partners and showing respect.“It is outstanding the step change that has occurred on so many fronts. You should all be incredibly proud of what you do, day in, day out, and it is my privilege to work with you.”

PDO and GlassPoint Solar have inaugurated the Miraah solar plant under the patronage of His Excellency Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil and Gas.The installation, located at the Amal oilfield, will be among the world’s largest solar projects when completed. Four blocks of the plant have now been constructed safely, on time and on budget with steam production integrated with the Amal network. The event also marked the official opening of the Miraah Visitor Centre with more than 200 guests in attendance, including representatives from both the public and private sectors.

H.E. Al Aufi described the inauguration “as an important milestone for Oman,” adding: “It further cements its position as the regional leader in energy convergence, uniting renewable and conventional energy industries. Deploying solar on Oman’s oilfields to reduce the industry’s

natural gas consumption has a significant and lasting economic benefit for the Sultanate.“It has contributed to developing local Omani talent in the renewable energy field and created job opportunities for local companies. We look forward to exporting our knowledge and expertise to the rest of the world as other progressive oil and gas producers follow in PDO’s footsteps.”Miraah’s construction has progressed on schedule with more than 1.9 million safe manhours completed without a Lost Time Injury incident since the project started in 2015. The first four blocks were commissioned successfully and the facility is now in daily operation delivering steam to the Amal oilfield. They have a total capacity of over 100 MWt and will deliver 660 tonnes of steam per day, providing significant gas savings.Once complete, the one gigawatt installation will consist of 36 blocks built in a sequence, which allows PDO to benefit from solar steam now and gradually ramp up production over time to meet the Amal oilfield’s steam demand. The project is on track to deliver an additional eight blocks in early 2019.Managing Director Raoul Restucci said: “Miraah provides a simple yet innovative solution that allows us to develop our heavy oil, while at the same time reducing energy consumption and costs.

“It represents an important step in our journey to become a fully fledged energy company, as well as placing the Sultanate firmly on the global renewable energy map with this pioneering project.”GlassPoint’s solar technology was specifically designed to harness the sun’s energy to generate the steam required for thermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR), seamlessly integrating into existing oilfield operations. The natural gas saved by using GlassPoint’s technology can be exported or directed toward higher-value applications such as power generation or industrial development, helping to diversify the economy.Ben Bierman, Chief Operating Officer and Acting CEO of GlassPoint, said: “Alongside our partner PDO, we are ushering in a new era for renewables here in the Sultanate and for the broader oil and gas industry.

“The current climate of low oil prices and the transition to cleaner energy sources, validates the important work we have achieved together with Miraah. Oman is becoming an epicentre of excellence for using solar energy to power oilfield operations and overcome today’s energy challenges.” Unlike solar panels that generate electricity, GlassPoint’s solution uses large mirrors to concentrate sunlight and boil oilfield water directly into steam. The steam is used for the extraction of viscous or heavy oil as an alternative to steam generated from natural gas. GlassPoint’s innovation was to bring the mirrors and other system components indoors, using a greenhouse structure to protect from wind and sand.

MECA Green AwardPDO has been awarded the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs’ Better Climate Award for four of its sustainable energy projects.The projects were: the Nimr reed beds, with partners Bauer Nimr LLC, Miraah with partners GlassPoint Solar, the solar car park at the Mina Al Fahal HQ and a project to install LED lighting at MAF and Ras Al Hamra.


Good progress is being made on the installation of solar self-lit reflectors on PDO and government network roads.The sun-powered “cat’s eye” devices are playing an invaluable role in illuminating routes at night and in inclement weather conditions.Work began on installing them on a total of 1,094 kilometres, over two phases starting in North Oman operations and covering black-top roads from Adam to Ibri via Natih, Fahud, Lekhwair and concluding at Ibri.

The first phase of the work was completed in a record of 40 days over a total of 450km with a total of 68 units per kilometre on both sides of the carriageway.The second phase began in December, covering a total of 650 kilometres from Haima to Salalah via Bahaj, Rima, Nimr, Marmul, Harweel and Thumrait. The solar road lights are charged by the sun during the day and automatically turn on when the sunlight is low or in a harsh weather environment, such as fog, rain or sandstorms. said: “This will contribute to achieving PDO’s Goal Zero road accident target. Besides being visible during harsh environments and at night time, they will be felt and heard during the day if you drive too close to the shoulder, thus adding another feature in tackling driving fatigue cases.”PDO’s normal operations conclude by sunset (6pm) and it is prohibited to drive during darkness or late at night without a prior permit(s). However, other road users from outside PDO or local communities use the Company’s road network.Hamed said: “As a result, PDO is committed to road safety and takes full care of all users of our roads to ensure all drivers reach home safely with their family and friends.”The open tender installation contract was assigned to Oman-Dutch Company Fijen TMLE BV LLC and involves both Omani as well as

Development Process Engineer Saif Al Wahaibi has won a prestigious award for his Master’s thesis.The Omani Student Consultative Council in the United Kingdom gave him one of its annual Oman Ambassadors Awards for his outstanding academic workThe awards were designed as a means of recognising young Omani scholars skilled in leadership, communication and team management, as well as those displaying artistic or literary talents, and those involved in academic projects, scientific research and volunteering.Saif received his accolade for Best Master’s thesis among Omani scholars abroad at an event held under the auspices of Dr Said bin Hamad Al Rubaiee, Secretary General of the Education Board, at the Ministry of Higher Education. He wrote the dissertation - studying a cobalt-based electrochemical sensor for phosphate detection in wastewater - while at Cranfield University.

Solar Safety Boost

Dutch staff. The firm is based at Ghubra North in Muscat and has more than 10 years of international experience in road solar lights.A newly specially designed and modified product which is heat resistant and high-impact proof was developed to meet PDO’s specific requirements. The contract includes a one-year full warranty and five years of maintenance to ensure the solar lights stay working.The Corporate Road Safety team started a small pilot project on the road from Amal to Nimr, over an approximate distance of 70 kilometres, in 2013. Since then, there has been no single accident on that road during foggy weather or at night.Hamed said: “Road safety is very important for PDO and doing it with a solar-powered system will also contribute to a safer, greener environment.”

The PDO Sprinters team won second place in the Al Mouj Marathon Relay and were the first mixed team to complete the race.

And Reservoir Engineer Azza Adhoobi was the first Omani lady to complete the half marathon event in two hours and 23 minutes.

Approximately 50 teams participated in the Muscat event and 17 were from PDO. The

PDO Sprinters managed to complete the 40 kilometre race in 3 hours 33 minutes behind the winning Navy Relay 2 squad. Nine PDO teams, which were sponsored by the People and Change Directorate, finished in the top 20. A total of 102 employees took part.

Thousands of runners from both Oman and abroad competed in different running events over a two-day period.

Transforming The Omani Supply Chain

PDO has agreed two deals worth US$253.1 million to Omanise the provision of vital equipment for the oil and gas industry.The Company signed contracts for the local manufacture and supply of transformers and valves which will be used in its operations and beyond.The deals represent further evidence of PDO’s In-Country Value (ICV) programme to retain more of the wealth of the oil and gas sector in the Sultanate and develop domestic supply chains.Managing Director Raoul Restucci said: “We are working hard with our partners to ensure that Oman builds its capacity and capability to competitively and professionally service both the nation’s oil and gas industry but also that beyond our borders.“ICV not only shortens our supply lines and reduces our delivery times and transport costs,

but also provides more vocational training and employment opportunities for Omanis while boosting the Sultanate’s economy.“We are delighted to sign these contracts for the provision of important equipment and parts for the oil and gas sector. Beyond the local supply of goods and services to the requisite technical level, they provide the further demonstration of how our contractors and suppliers are playing a greater role in embedding ICV in their operations.”PDO has struck deals with Rusayl-based Voltamp Transformers Oman for the supply of power transformers and with Al Jizzi Transformers and Switchgears, located in Ma’abella, for the supply of well head transformers. The companies employ almost 100 Omanis in total.It also penned agreements with Muscat-based Techno Fit Trading: one with Chinese concern Wuzhou Valve Company for the manufacture of ball valves, and one with Indian firm Gene-tech Controls for the manufacture of mono-flange valves. After the first three years of these deals, both of the foreign companies have agreed to

establish production facilities in the Sultanate to make the key components.The product range covers thousands of valve items from half-inch to 24-inch in size in various material grades, covering the majority of PDO operations, as well as potentially the wider petro-chemical industry in Oman and beyond.The supply and maintenance of valves is the 17th opportunity to be realised by PDO since the ICV Strategy Blueprint for the Sultanate’s oil and gas operators was unveiled in 2013 to boost local business participation in the nation’s hydrocarbon exploration and production sector. So far, the Company has localised the supply and manufacture of goods and services in a number of key areas, such as scaffolding, carbon steel pipes, well engineering equipment and the provision of polymer for enhanced oil recovery.Approximately 41% of PDO’s overall contracts are now placed with local businesses, and as much as 53% of its well engineering contracts are awarded to Local Community Contractors, amongst the highest in the region.


PDO has staged a celebration event to mark the delivery of its 100th field development plan (FDP).The ceremony, under the auspices of His Excellency Dr Mohammed Al Rumhy, Minister of Oil and Gas, included an exhibition in the BMF Building charting the 14-year achievement.FDPs cover all aspects involved in developing an oil or gas field, including safety, environmental and economic factors, reservoir characteristics, well design and construction, engineering and infrastructure.The 100 created by PDO since 2003 span 77 different oil fields covering 32 various reservoir combinations and have led to the planned drilling of over 5,000 wells with the addition of 2.6 billion barrels of reserves, equivalent to nearly 14 years of the Company’s oil production.They cover all known recovery processes from primary recovery, such as natural flow, secondary, such as pressure maintenance, and tertiary, such as enhanced oil recovery.The plans have been generated by the Company’s Field Development Centre and its predecessor the Study Centre, which was set up in 2003 to achieve a turnaround in declining production.Managing Director Raoul Restucci said: “Our Field Development Centre staff play a critical role in supporting our production plans and hydrocarbon maturation funnel to ensure we are maximising the recovery of oil, gas and condensates from our concession area in a safe, responsible and commercially viable way.“The creation of our 100th FDP represents a fantastic collective effort and clearly illustrates our determination to deliver competitive,

in-house front-end development solutions comprising fit-for-purpose field development plans, concept and design selections.“Our decision to sustainably fuel PDO’s production engine through focused FDPs and strategies over the long term has arrested a production decline and realised enormous value for Oman.”

The first FDP to be delivered was for a primary and infill development at Nimr-B field, comprising 51 wells and yielding 36 million barrels of additional reserves. The 100th was the Saih Rawl Shuaiba FDP which lays the groundwork for 92 more wells to produce 22 million barrels of reserves at a low unit technical cost.

The 120-strong Field Development Centre team of petroleum engineers includes 20 PhD and 40 MSc holders and six out of 10 staff are Omani.Field Development Manager Junaid Ghulam said: “Over the years, several hundred Omani staff have been developed through the centre, published a multitude of technical papers and presented at numerous conferences. It represents a beacon of expertise and endeavour for the Sultanate.“PDO’s amazing ability to deliver 100 FDPs through its own in-house ring-fenced Field Development Centre has enabled it to determine its destiny of growth and prosperity for years to come. Every day, we are pushing the envelope on what is technically feasible and economically viable.“Few exploration and production companies have in-house maturation capability from project trial through to operation and staff capability development for all three EOR mechanisms: thermal, chemical and miscible gas injection. This full suite of capabilities is of tremendous commercial potential for broader commercialisation and service provision to external customers.”

Hussain Rallies To VictoryThe rally track in the Al Jafnain industrial area was almost 20 kilometres long and was divided into two stages. The competitors in 14 cars and buggies had to complete the course twice and Hussain finished in 28 minutes, 38 seconds.Hussain, who works in the Saih Rawl cluster, said: “I suffered from brake failure in the second round which hindered my performance and I still had 18 kilometres to go. I also faced a huge problem when a large pebble got trapped in the back tyre between the brake disc and the rim. This caused a loss of control in the last six kilometres and eventually much damage to the brake system. “Most of the buggies were heavily modified to improve their power output, reaching 230 brake horsepower. However, my car could only produce 156 BHP. That made the competition level very

hard, and some of the other competitors had big reputations having won major titles in the past in Oman and internationally.“I am very happy to have accomplished this achievement and hope to get my car race-ready for upcoming rallies.”The race was organised by the Oman Automobile Association as part of the Muscat Festival.

A new chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) pilot using polymer has begun at Haima West.The trial follows on the success of the Al Khalata alkaline surfactant polymer (ASP) pilot in the same Marmul cluster.Using the plant built for the ASP pilot, polymer injection started in the Haima West reservoir last December.The step marks a major milestone on PDO‘s pioneering EOR journey and is intended to assess the feasibility of realising an estimated 36 million barrels: 10% incremental oil recovery above water flood from a full field polymer injection at the site. PDO’s EOR portfolio is growing rapidly and it is believed such pilots will unlock further opportunities and support the maturation of other chemical EOR projects, with a potential gain of over 150 million barrels. It is anticipated that by 2025 more than 23% of PDO’s production will come from EOR projects.The new pilot was necessary because of differences in the reservoir characteristics between Haima West and Al Khalata. The former exhibits significantly lower permeabilities and high sand production, which in turn pose a higher risk to achieving good polymer injectivity . Project Lead Hanaa Al Sulaimani said: “It was therefore determined that a pilot was needed to de-risk those elements and develop an important understanding and experiences before full field implementation.”

A New Step In The EOR Journey

There was a previous polymer injection trial at Haima West in 2010 which used the same substance deployed at Al Khalata. However, the trial suffered from injectivity challenges which triggered the need to design a dedicated pilot with a fit-for-purpose polymer for the Haima West reservoir. The pilot was designed so that two patterns have been drilled adjacent to each other. One will be used for the polymer flood and the other serves as a back-up in case the first suffers from injectivity loss or any unforeseen issues. The patterns are inverted five spots with an injector-producer spacing of 75 metres (see diagram below).

Surveillance is critical to assess the pilot performance, and the injector wells are equipped with fibre optics for frequent conformance monitoring through temperature and acoustic data acquisition. Two producer wells are equipped with permanent downhole gauges (DHGs) for continuous pressure monitoring while the rest have dual wellheads to cater for the extensive surveillance activities planned.Marmul-RTQ Cluster Lead Majid Al Mahrooqi said: “The pilot cost was optimised for the current cost saving environment. This was done by utilising the ASP facilities for polymer injection and directing the produced crude to the main production line for export.“I’d like to thank the Management, Well Engineering, Field Development Centre, Production Chemistry, Subsurface, Engineering, and Operations teams for their hard work and integrated efforts to achieve this milestone.”

MarmulAirportRe-CertifiedAfter a thorough audit process which ran for over two months, the Public Authority of Civil Aviation (PACA) has formally re-certified Marmul airport which is owned, maintained, and operated by PDO. The certification was conducted as per the requirements and standards specified by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, and has been issued for two years.The re-certification process comprised the following major milestones: • Submission of the expression-of-interest

for re-certification by PDO to PACA• PACA assessment of the application along

with the aerodrome manual inspection• PACA assessment / audit of the aerodrome

facilities and equipment• PACA assessment of the fire response

during an emergency exercise

• Final re-certification or refusal based on the audit findings.

In order to ensure audit and re-certification readiness, teams at Marmul airport had to ensure compliance in different domains such as safety and security, aerodrome manuals, checklists, runway friction testing and inspection records. The team, led by Aviation Quality Control Team Lead Suhail Al Sheibany, worked diligently to ensure that all the necessary steps were taken to ensure that the audit and re-certification process went smoothly. Logistics Manager Nabil Al Riyami said: “I am proud of the teams that worked on this exercise so

tirelessly and the results speak for themselves. It is a moment of great honour that our airports have the same level of certification as some of the best airports in the world. I would like to congratulate all the individuals who played a part in this re-certification process and I hope we can maintain the same level of compliance at all our airports.”


A PDO taskforce has restored 12 gas wells generating millions of dollars through revenue generation and cost savings.The achievement came after a combined Gas Directorate-Petroleum Engineering (GGP) and Well Engineering team was set the challenge in 2016 of increasing production while minimising spend.The team launched a project into the viability of re-opening long-term, closed-in wells. This started with candidate wells that had low or no production. These were identified by the Gas asset team, and a clear work scope for each well was identified after discussion with the Well Engineering Directorate. Support was provided by civil construction, materials and services contract holders, and various service providers.A Lean approach was adopted to set out the ground rules and a timeline, and ensure compliance with PDO regulations.The outcome of the scope identification was a wide range of jobs to be carried out in gas fields at Saih Rawl, Saih Nihayda, Barik, Yibal and Fahud South West. These included:• One Integrity restoration of an Action

Code-9 well (9 5/8” casing leak across a reservoir)

• One fishing of 600m of stuck coil tubing• One fishing of a stuck coil tubing bottom

hole assembly• One well fishing and milling wireline plug,

and the fishing of a bottom hole assembly and bottom hole assembly, and 625m of coil tubing

• Work on two wells to fish a total of five permanent packers and re-complete with cemented completion

• Work on two abandonment wells.All the jobs were performed with no Lost Time Injuries, HSE issues or wells process safety incidents.The first phase of the project started in April 2016 and the last well is expected to be completed shortly.Senior Well Engineer Planning and Design Ahmad Taha said: “Just like any new project, many challenges were faced and solved by collaboration and teamwork. We were working with old wells, complex fishing and down hole well conditions, and high risk well control wells in high pressure, high temperature conditions. We also needed materials at short notice.“As a result of all of this, the project team managed to restore 12 wells and abandon a further two planned wells. This ensured the restoration of well integrity, avoided the need to drill 12 new wells, and also opened a door for the team to work over more wells in the near future.” The total gas potential restored from 11 wells was around 1.5 million cubic metres of dry gas per day, and 170 m3/d of condensate from Barik, Saih Rawl and Saih Nihayda.In addition, a further 0.8 million m3/d of gas has been unlocked from fixing collapsed casing in one new well.It would have cost US$76.5 million to drill 12 similar new wells and taken 785 days, not including the cost to suspend or abandon the worked over wells. However, the cost and time saved by working over the 12 old wells instead of drilling new ones is US$35 million and 160 days.The project represented the first time workover jobs have been performed on PDO gas wells by a drilling rig resource.

Boosting Gas Production

Electrical Technician Hammad Al Khayari has presented a case study to an international conference illustrating the benefits of replacing copper conductors with aluminium alloy material in new substations.Using PDO and Mazoon Electricity Company as a case study, he evaluated that the use of aluminum 5005 alloy material results in a cost-effective solution and a technically viable alternative to commercial copper.Hammad, who joined in 2015 and now works in the Gas Directorate, presented his findings to an expert audience at the International Conference on Electrical and Computing Technologies and Applications at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK), UAE.He said: “I gave them a brief overview of PDO and then gave a technical presentation on the design of a substation grounding system. At the end, they were impressed by the research and praised my work.”

PDO is supporting the training of 50 Omani graduates to work as key commissioning staff in the oil and gas sector.The diploma and Bachelor degree holders, aged 18-23, will undergo three years of classroom and field training before being given full-time jobs in the industry on successful completion of the programme.They have already begun the first six months of their training with Kentz Overseas Company LLC at its new Commissioning Academy in Muscat, in subjects such as electronics, control and automation, mechanics and operations.The trainees will then be attached to PDO commissioning teams in the Interior for 30 months to learn on the job about commissioning activities on mechanical equipment, instrumentation and utility, electrical power and control and automation systems.On passing the course, the recruits will gain an internationally recognised oil and gas Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (OPITO) or Edexcel certificate, and take up full-time employment with Kentz (or other oil and gas companies in or outside Oman), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of SNC-Lavalin,

The agreement will mean SNC-Lavalin’s specialists will be fully integrated within PDO’s commissioning and start-up management team. Services will include full systems completions, commissioning and start-up management, planning, consultancy, supervision, execution and the administration of various oil and gas and related facilities.

The contract, which began in 2014, provides engineering, sourcing and logistics, construction, commissioning, maintenance and management services throughout Block 6 in the South of Oman and brownfield engineering,

procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) projects in Greater Birba.A total of 2,000 contractors and 300 sub-contractors are employed on the IMC.WPAI recorded two LTIs in 2016 but Contract Manager Lijo Thomas said a systematic and step-by-step approach and safety-first mindset had helped the turnaround.He added: “The commitment

The first all-female batch of trainees has graduated from PDO’s National Objectives programme to work in the clothing industry.A celebration event was held at Salalah’s Crowne Plaza hotel to honour their success under the auspices of His Excellency Dr Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Amri, Technical Affairs Adviser at the Office of the Minister of State and Governor of Dhofar.The jobseekers successfully completed a six-month course which included sewing machine techniques and English communication and computer skills. They will be employed by Fashion Apparels LLC and Ark Garment Manufacturing at their clothing factories in the Salalah Free Zone.They are among 450 women being trained over the course of three years, all of whom will be employed at these factories upon successful completion of their training. External Affairs and Value Creation Director Abdul-Amir Al Ajmi said: “I am delighted that the training programme has enabled these women to secure jobs in the clothing industry.“This is a great example of how we have worked with contractors to boost female empowerment and employment by providing first-class training and logistical support.“PDO is dedicated to supporting the Sultanate’s economy and we are committed to extending

Saudi Team Praises PDOA Saudi Aramco team has given PDO a seal of approval during a benchmarking exercise of several safety, operations and maintenance processes.During the two-day review, Company Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) were given a chance to share knowledge and best practice with the visitors from the Juaymah natural gas liquid processing plant.The visit took place as part of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) National Oil Companies Production and Maintenance Committee.The aim of the committee is to establish full co-operation and technical support across the region’s national oil companies. There are other GCC committees for drilling, exploration and development, health, safety and environment and supply chains.Production Strategy and Support Team Leader Said Al Maashari, one of the PDO staff on the committee, said: “Our SMEs demonstrated the excellence of PDO capabilities and their professionalism.

“The Saudi Aramco team was so impressed about all the topics discussed, PDO’s evolution and aspiration and the competency of our SMEs. Although it was a two-way discussion, it showed that PDO is ahead in most of the areas discussed.” Smart Field Project Manager Salim Al Sibani, PDO’s other member on the committee, said: “The benefits of being a member of this committee are enormous to the country as we take learnings that add value from other GCC oil companies in areas such as ICV, nationalisation, other economic strategies, sustainable development and so on.“We also establish connections with counterparts and gain access to consultation in case of any

challenges, explore new technologies, and obtain first-hand opinion and references on contractors, business matters, methodologies and strategies.“It’s also good from an individual perspective as you can network, learn from others and enhance your experience and maximise the technical knowledge in production and maintenance fields.”Traditionally, PDO members on the committee change every four years. More than 1,000 frontline supervisors have undergone training and site coaching to promote safer behaviour in the workplace.Safety Leadership for Frontline Supervisor (FLS) training was first introduced in 2016 in the Well Engineering Directorate to encourage managers and team leads to play a greater role on site by coaching and sharing safety leadership skills such as relationship building, inquiry and listening skills, intervention practice and job planning. The first phase (FLS-1) was designed to increase the knowledge of frontline supervisors in promoting safe behaviour in the workplace, through understanding the six safety leadership responsibilities of a frontline supervisor.

“This is a unique way to engage in safety dialogue with my Leader.”

The second phase (FLS-2) was launched last year, focusing on real-life scenarios at the rig site with a discussion about chronic unease, risk normalisation and the management of change. Both phases embody the ‘accelerative learning’ approach and reflect the 70-20-10 PDO learning model.To embed the lessons, an FLS Academy has been initiated, consisting of workshops from both phases where supervisors pass on their knowledge.One of the key factors of FLS is the dedication and commitment of facilitators who were selected from the Well Engineering team and

One, Abdullah Al Ismaili, Well Engineering Contract Holder and Team Leader for Materials, said: “The FLS training has transformed our approach to HSE matters in such a way it is now more integrated into our day to day activities, not just at work but also within our personal lives. “The structure of the two FLS programmes equipped us with the necessary tools that enable us to become better leaders.

“It really makes a difference to see and listen to my boss talk about his personal stories and

commitment in making safety a priority.” “As a facilitator, the FLS journey made it clear that knowledge of HSE management is not enough in the pursuit of Goal Zero. Efforts need to be complemented with team understanding and alignment. Diving into the various FLS modules helped us to better appreciate each others behaviours, how situations need to be assessed

and, more importantly, how to respond to various symptoms. “With the high number of contractors who work with the Wells community, FLS knowledge becomes an essential capability that all site supervisors must have and exercise to develop winning teams.”Bahja Hoist Supervisor Ahmed Al Ghafri attended FLS-1 and FLS-2 workshops in 2016 and 2017, and was named one of the FLS Champions in 2017.

Emergency Training

More than 100 participants from the oil and gas industry, government officials, emergency response organisations, contractors and experts participated in an emergency ICS300 training programme organised by PDO and Shell.The programme provides training for personnel who require advanced application of the Incident Command System (ICS).It was followed by a joint emergency table-top exercise titled “Fahal-18” at the Learning and Development Centre.


A Winning CombinationHundreds staff and contractors gave a huge welcome to the Oman national football team in an official celebration held at the Company’s Muscat headquarters.The event was staged in honour of the victorious players, officials from the Oman Football Association (OFA), and administrative and technical staff to mark the recent triumph in the 23rd Arabian Gulf Cup. يضم عدد هذا الشهر من نشرة “الفحل” بين ثنايا صفحاته جملة من المقاالت حول مجالين من مجاالت التركيز الرئيسية هما: السالمة المرورية والطاقة المتجددة.

يحق لنا جميعا أن نشعر بالفخر واالعتزاز باإلنجاز الذي حققته الشركة ومتعاقديها بقطع مسافة تربو على 500 مليون كيلومتر سياقة دون حوادث مميتة متصلة بالعمل، ويجسد هذا اإلنجاز الجهود القائمة في مختلف

أرجاء الشركة من خالل مبادرات متعددة لتحسين معايير السياقة.

مما تقدمنا، في بدور مهم 2016 ساهم عام الرحالت في بإدارة التحكم مركز استحداث أن فيه ريب ال ومما أدى إلى انخفاض متوسط المخالفات لكل مركبة بنسبة 97٪، وكفل تحقيق تحسن كبير في أداء الخدمات

اللوجستية.

بيد أننا يجب أال نركن إلى الرضى عن الذات أبدا تجاه هذا النجاح. إنه ثمرة الكثير من التخطيط والعمل الجاد والتنظيم والتفاني، وما زال أمامنا الكثير للقيام به لتحقيق هدفنا الصفري.

للرحلة التجريبي المشروع بما في ذلك الزخم، للحفاظ على العام المبادرات هذا وسوف نستمر في طرح اإللكترونية في فهود وقرن علم، وتركيب الكاميرات داخل المركبات لمراقبة سلوك السائق وإدارة اإلجهاد.

كما أود أن ألفت انتباهكم إلى التقدم الجيد الذي أحرز في تركيب عاكسات ذاتية تعمل بالطاقة الشمسية في شبكة طرق الشركة والحكومة. حيث تسهم أجهزة “عيون القطط” التي تعمل بالطاقة الشمسية بدور ال يقدر بثمن في إضاءة مسافة تربو على 1000 كم عند حلول الظالم وفي ظروف الطقس العاصف، وساهمت هذه األجهزة الذكية بدور رئيسي في الحفاظ على األرواح، وستساهم بال ريب في جعل شبكة طرقنا أكثر أمنا.

وبالطبع، عموما، ستضطلع الطاقة الشمسية بدور أكبر أهمية واالفتتاح الرسمي لمشروع مرآة، الذي تناولته صفحات هذا العدد، هو خير شاهد على ذلك، ويوفر هذا المشروع حال بسيطا ومبتكرا يتيح لنا تطوير نفطنا

الثقيل مع تقليل استهالك الطاقة وتكاليفها في الوقت ذاته.

أخيرا وليس آخرا، نزف التحايا لمديرية هندسة اآلبار، التي احتفلت مؤخرا بمؤتمرها السنوي. ففي 2017، وسعت المديرية مرة أخرى من أنشطة عملها وحسنت من اإلنتاجية رغم القيود على الميزانية نتيجة انخفاض أسعار العديد من أهدافها من خالل تطبيق التوقعات في المديرية تقدما يدعو لإلعجاب تجاوز النفط، فقد حققت منهجية “ليين” لتحسين كفاءة العمل في عملياتها، وزيادة التركيز على عملية إنجاز اآلبار والسالمة واألنظمة اآللية والموظفين والمتعاقدين. يمثل الفريق مثاال رائعا لعقلية التحسين المستمر التي يجب علينا جميعا
