ZORIAN’S GOODBYE Zorion came to live on our farm in his 24th year of life. The average life span of a horse is 25-30 years old, so it was time for him to retire. A couple of friends owned him and had been boarding him at a public stable. They offered to give him to me, knowing he would be loved and cared for on a more personal basis for the remaining years of his life. At first I declined to take him. I had never cared for an elderly horse and the thought of caring for him through the end of his life scared me a little. After having a series of three dreams in which Zorion was present on our property, gazing at me and looking very much at home, I contacted my friends and agreed to take in the aging fellow. Zorion’s primary job on the farm was to look beautiful and he excelled at it. He was strikingly handsome and he seemed aware of it. Zorion also provided comic relief. He could often be seen clowning around, sticking his tongue out, yawning repeatedly in an exaggerated manner, or letting his lower lip hang down so low it looked like it might fall off. He was patient and tolerant with the young horses, even when a nervous two-year-old chewed its entire mane off. Zorion was a quiet, concerned presence when one of the other horses was ill or injured, and would stay near until the patient recovered. On a cold December morning, I noticed Zorion standing down by our pond. The other horses had come up for breakfast but Zorion stood alone, head down, obviously not feeling well. As I led him to the barn, I called to make a veterinary appointment. It would be faster and easier for me to bring him to the animal hospital. I put him in the barn while I got the trailer and truck ready to go, then went inside to gather my things. I called my young neighbor, Hayley, to ask if she would help me get Zorion loaded in the trailer. She agreed and I walked out to the barn to meet her. Zorion was in trouble; he had laid down and rolled, but was too close to the wall. His legs were caught and he was stuck; he was beginning to panic. Continued on page 2

ZORIAN’S GOODBYE

Zorion came to live on our farm in his 24th year of life.

His legs were caught and he was stuck; he was beginning to panic.

an upright position. He was shaky and weak, but standing when the vet arrived. She examined and treated him as much as she could, then left us to watch him overnight. We cleaned the barn and talked while keeping an eye on Zorion. While we cleaned, Zorion walked outside and looked like he was enjoying the company of his horse friends across the fence. Hayley went home and I went into my house to eat lunch. About 45 minutes later, I walked out to the barn and discovered Zorion’s lifeless body in the middle of the barn floor.

I am grateful for the HU and how it helped me get past the extreme emotional state and enjoy my last moments with my horse friend, this special Soul. I am grateful for the power of love and the HU and how it inspired Zorion to get to his feet and walk out to have one last visit with his horse buddies.

Singing HU as a nondirected prayer can instantly open your heart to divine love even as you sing. Truth will come to you, and fear will flee.

—Harold Klemp, ECK Wisdom on Conquering Fear, p. 39

Zorion’s Goodbye continued from page 1

Immediately I placed a call to the emergency vet; I was told she would be there in 20 minutes. Fear gripped me and my chest tightened painfully as I looked around for something that might help us get him up. I burst into tears as I realized the futility of his situation.

I placed a call to another neighbor, who owns heavy construction equipment, to ask if he could help us get Zorion to his feet. When he heard the situation and age of the horse, he said euthanasia was the kindest choice. In my emotional state, I was unable to think clearly.

I needed to sing HU. After I shared with Hayley that the HU is a love song to God and that we sing it in time of need, I closed my eyes, inwardly asked for the help of the Mahanta, my inner teacher, and Prajapati, an ECK Master known for working with animals. I began to sing the sacred HU out loud. The painful tightness in my chest released, and love flowed in and opened the heart. When I opened my eyes, I looked down to Zorion’s head in my lap. Pain and anxiety filled Zorion’s eyes, but he no longer looked panicky. While waiting for the vet, I stroked his head and talked to him. Overcome with gratitude for the years of knowing this Soul, I thanked him for all the love, joy, and laughter he had brought us and for six years of good memories. I told him he was loved beyond measure and I would never forget him.

What happened next I would not have believed had I not seen it with my own eyes. Suddenly Zorion shifted his position and got his legs under him just enough to make it to
