The MEDIA SETTINGS sub-panel is the place you define alternatives for displaying various media, mainly

images, that are offered from the MEDIA PANEL within the upper NAVIGATION bar.

WordPress has produced-in image reduction. It automatically creates as much as three images of

numerous sizes, (thumbnail, medium and enormous) based on the dimensions in this particular sub-

panel and WordPress also saves the original image, so you will have a total of four image sizes saved for

every image you upload.

If the original image is the same size as the thumbnail dimension you have entered then this image will

not be enlarged to the medium or the large size dimensions, the exception to this is WordPress will not

ENLARGE an image to these sizes, for instance.

The default THUMBNAIL dimensions are 150 x 150 pixels, this is often changed towards the size you

desire. The check box beneath the size will crop the THUMBNAIL for your exact size. Un-checking the

box will inform WordPress to re-size the photo based on the proportional height and width of the

original image.

The Medium Size default is 300 by 300 pixels maximum and also the large size can measure up to 1024

by 1024 pixels.

These default dimensions are generally adequate for many images.

To get a better idea of how WordPress re-sizes images I'll download the same image twice - once with

the CROP BOX checked and another with the CROP BOX un-checked. I'll also have a graphic that is

certainly smaller that the LARGE SIZE dimension enter so we can easily see how WordPress handles the

re-sizing.

Through the MEDIA >> ADD NEW sub-panel I am going to add a picture that is 640 pixels by 480 pixels.

This really is downloaded with all the CROP BOX checked therefore the thumbnail is going to be exactly

150 x 150 pixels because the image is small compared to the 1024 x 1024 pixels for that larger image

then WordPress will never obtain that larger image available.

The first image features a thumbnail dimensions of exactly 150 x 150 pixels because the CROP BOX was

checked. It provides the medium image available but there is no larger image available because the

original size was 640 x 480 and WordPress will not enlarge the images.

Throughout the next image with the CROP BOX UNCHECKED the thumbnail dimensions are proportional

at 150 x 112 pixels and the medium image is the same and still no larger image. Re-sizing this way does

retain a lot of the image compared to CORP where you can lose some the picture.

Even though the default settings are generally adequate for many sites you can set these dimensions to

suite your requirements.

AUTO-EMBED

wordpress knowledge base

WordPress will make an effort to EMBED media, like a videos, in your post when this box is checked.

But, for security, this embed feature is simply provided by a listing of of 16 sites designed to use the

oEmbed code. If WordPress cannot use this embed functions then you will get a simple link.

MAXIMUM EMBED SIZE will restrict the embedded media to these dimension. If left blank then it will

default to the maximum width of your site theme.

UPLOADING FILES enables you to control where media is stored in accordance with your WordPress

address. The default is placed to wp-contents/uploads and is automatically created when you download

the first media.

If you change the above line to another relative path other than the default, the FULL URL PATH TO

FILES is used. Enter the full path to the new upload directory if you change the line above.

The final check box will organize your uploads by year and after that month. This is automatically done

by WordPress. For instance if you download a file on July 4th 2010 then that image will be in a folder at

wp-content/uploads/2010/07.

Before you exit, rEMEMBER to save all changes.

Videos are some of the most best and powerful communication tools around. They provide direct and

immediate access to issues and questions and empowers everyone using the knowledge base for

growth.

It is my belief that we all go through stages of learning and that a good foundation could make the main

difference between sustainable progress as well as a constant spinning of the wheels with no progress.
