I editor‘s letter

Perhaps the ancients had it right all along. Pliny the Elder was the first to refer to the Canaries as The Fortunate Isles, and while there have been trembles and some tremors, and of course a recent eruption on La Palma, in general these Canary Islands are indeed fortunate. We are blessed with an excellent climate, neither too cold in winter nor too hot in summer. This was indeed a bonus in recent weeks given the extremes we were witnessing in Northern Europe, with ice and snow and temperatures as low as had been experienced in over 40 years. Wonderful for Christmas, great to look at for a day or two and enjoy when there’s no rush to school or work, but lovely to return to the very pleasant temperatures here as well. The devastation wreaked by the Haiti earthquake was yet another reminder of how tenuous our grip on this planet is. That country has suffered so many political and natural upheavals it makes our troubles shrink in comparison, and with a fragile infrastructure to begin with, that now must overcome the huge task of rebuilding, physically and morally, a nation state, the work is only beginning. Shame too on those who tried to use this, quite literally, earth shattering natural disaster for their own ends, with ugly statements made about religious retribution, among other misplaced words spoken and written in the aftermath. The earth we inhabit for the short time we exist is a fragile place, and we cannot control it although we can help to preserve it. The land, the sea and the air will have its way, will have its say, and humankind must live with that. Here in the Canary Islands we continue to be blessed by our climate and living conditions. So let‘s give thanks and help to those less fortunate, and those in need.

The Santa Cruz Carnaval has been recognised for many years as one of the best in the world, and possibly second only to Rio de Janeiro. Declared as an event of international touristic interest, this year’s Carnaval, with the theme of Tenerife: the History of a Carnaval, pays tribute to everything and everyone who has converted Carnaval into what it is today.

At the same time, Carnaval takes place in Puerto de la Cruz, also an event of international touristic interest. As well as the numerous groups of spontaneous participants, elaborately decorated floats, dancing and singing groups in the carnaval procession, there are also delegations from different countries, the most important of which is that from Düsseldorf in Germany, an association which has existed for 25 years.

When Carnaval has ended in Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz, it arrives at many other towns in Tenerife.

The Dental Clinic Fañabé Plaza is located in the Commercial Centre Fañabé Plaza in Playa Fañabé, which has its own underground car park with direct access by lift and escalator for your convenience. The clinic is popular with clients of many nationalities as they know that they will be attended to by a specialist who also speaks their language. This is essential when making technical decisions regarding your own dental health.

Appointments can be made in advance to suit you, and the clinic can provide treatments using the latest dental technologies such as dental laser whitening in only one appointment, ozone therapy, computer guided surgery with no incision and no stitches required, one day implants, high quality cosmetic dentistry, same day repairs in its own dental laboratory, whilst ensuring that all treatments are carried out painlessly. In the case of an emergency, staff will attend to patients without appointments being made, especially if you have an urgent problem or are suffering pain. This emergency service even includes weekends and bank holidays, all you have to do is call the emergency number, 687 74 42 25.Although it is situated on the upper floor of this popular shopping centre, the clinic is completely wheelchair accessible. The staff realise that for some patients, visiting the dentist can be traumatic, so the clinic’s main objective has always been to offer high quality dental treatment which is totally pain free, ensuring maximum comfort for the patient.Dental Clinic Fañabé Plaza opened in 2002 and now has a long list of satisfied patients. The role of today‘s typical woman is very deman-ding, she has to juggle a career, a family and a home, and she wants to look great throughout her average 16 hour day. With permanent make-up, this is no longer a fantasy, and no longer for cele-brities only. Permanent make-up has been around since the beginning of the 20th century. It is a cosmetic technique which enhances the features of the face, it gives definition to eyebrows, eyes and lips by the use of colours.

It is so convenient for anyone who has a hectic lifestyle and doesn’t have time to apply make-up every morning. It is also suitable for people who suffer from allergies to traditional cosmetics, are active in sports or manually, physically or visually impaired. Permanent cosmetics do not sweat, cry, or wear off. Properly applied, the colours can appear natural and subtle or dramatic and striking, the choice is yours. With permanent make-up you will never again have to face the shock of looking in the mirror some mornings at someone you don’t even recognise, you will always have that fresh youthful look.We are not all blessed with perfectly shaped lips, so if you want full, sensuous lips that look good all the time then a permanent make-up application can cover many irregularities or colour imperfections, and an improved lip shape can even be created. This holds true for both men and women. Permanently applied lip colour eliminates ‘bleeding‘ into the small lines that we all have around our lip borders. Thin upper and lower lips can be improved to make the lip appear slightly fuller and more defined. Permanent make-up applied

correctly can give a more youthful expression to the entire face. It looks more natural than any topical application of make-up as the pigments become a part of your skin and don‘t smear or smudge. It‘s an investment that is worthy when applied by the right professional. If you want a stronger constant colour on your lips, then a bit of Vaseline or clear lip gloss is all that is needed on top of full permanently applied lip colour to make the colour stand out and look as if you spent a lot of time lining and filling in your perfect lips. A good technician will always take into consideration what you would like to achieve with a permanent cosmetic lip procedure. So take your favourite lip liners and lipstick with you to the procedure so you can show her exactly what you would like as your final result. For the woman or man who has little or no eyebrows, permanent cosmetics mean no more constantly drawing them on. Eyebrows add so much to a person‘s individual beauty. You can change your hair colour and style, but you cannot change the shape of your face, nor the placement of your features, such as how close or far apart your eyes are set.Heavy and close set brows can give the impression of displeasure or frowning, just as flat brows can

make the eyes look smaller and the entire face shorter in length. A very high and arched thin brow can give an unnaturally surprised look, like a ‘deer caught in a car‘s headlights‘. With permanent make-up you can even narrow or widen facial appearance by just selecting the proper placement of new permanent eyebrows. Colour selection of the brow pigment is also important and a good technician will mix pigments individually for your skin tone. One of the newest techniques available is hair stroke simulation which gives brows a wonderfully natural look. It is said that eyebrows define the face. Are your brows defining your face to accentuate your beauty? If not, then give mother nature a hand and enhance your personal beauty with artistic skill. A technician with skill and training will be able to follow the natural ‘diagonals‘ of any brow‘s hairline or decide on a soft powder fill to complement your natural head of hair.

Part 2 will appear in our next edition. For more information about permanent make-up at Zenzi, call in to the salon at CC El Camison, Playa de las Américas.

She has great boat toys also, try your hand at water skiing and have fun also with the water scooters and jet rib on board. CIT Sur, the centre for tourism initiatives, recently held their annual loyalty award presentation, in recognition of visitors who return to Tenerife again and again to holiday.

There were holiday makers from all over Europe present, and all received a certificate and flowers from CIT president Maria Rosales Alonso and Adeje mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga. The event was held in the Convento de San Francisco in Adeje. The biggest applause was for couple Mr Lane and Mrs Chambers, who have each been holidaying in Tenerife with their respective first spouses, subsequently being widowed, meeting here in Tenerife, and now holidaying regularly in the Hotel Vulcano. Between them they have been to Tenerife 70 times. There was also a special applause for young Colby Feely who, his mother told us, “has been coming here three or four times a year since he was three weeks old”, both Colby and his mum stay in the Costa Adeje Gran Hotel.

Thousands of shoppers all over the Canaries have been waiting for the big day when lidl finally opens its many doors to retailers in the archipelago.

To bring that day a bit closer, the huge international supermarket chain recently inaugurated its new logistic centre in Tenerife, a huge warehouse which will service the first 12 Lidl stores opening soon in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. More than 100 people will work at the centre, which has 27,000 square metres, 23 loading bays, and five distinct temperature zones for different products. The official opening was presided over by Cabildo president Ricardo Melchior, Granadilla mayor Rafael José Yanes Mesa, as well as Lidl’s national and provincial director generals, Michael Aranda and Javier Suárez respectively.

2010 ford Mustang

Pure and simple, the ultimate thrill machineThe new 2010 Mustang is a visual represen-tation of raw power — from its chiseled good looks, through its sweeping waistline and pronounced curves, to its kicked-up haunches. now sitting on striking new wheels, the Mustang sports a power dome bonnet empha-sising the power of the engine it hides, a di-stinctive grille and an aggressive front fascia, for a sleek, strong look that’s all its own.

The iconic Mustang grille, the “hockey stick” side lines, the hop up into the rear haunch, the quarter-glass window, the three-bar tail lamp and the centre-mounted faux gas cap all give the new car even more presence and character. As a result, the new 2010 Mustang has a clean, sporty design that looks smart and efficient. Nine wheel choices are available for the new 2010 Mustang lineup. 17-inch Painted Aluminum wheels come standard on Mustang V6. 19-inch Premium Painted Luster Nickel Aluminum wheels are optional on Mustang GT Premium. Unique sequential rear turn signals – a distinctive feature during the 1960’s – now adorn Mustang as a standard feature. They fire sequentially, inside to out, to register turn indication within three individual red signal chambers. Using modern technology, each signal uses one light-emitting diode (LED) lamp to provide sharp style as well as bright performance. Aerodynamic, body-colour exterior side-view mirrors come as standard on New 2010 Mustang GT, Mustang GT Premium and with the Mustang Pony Package.

Talented Canarian, Braulio Simancas, took over from Salvador Gallego as head chef at the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque’s flagship restaurant, las Aguas, recently and we were privileged to be there at the presentation of the new menu.

The tasting offered, of smaller than normal portions of some of the creations which will make up the gastronomic offer for the new season, was delicious, innovative and in some cases surprising, with the emphasis on traditional Canarian cuisine and locally grown ingredients.

Nibbles to open the appetite included Canarian caviar - small, round, ‘black’ island potatoes - on this occasion, scooped out a little with a filling of chorizo and Canarian mojo sauce, round croquettes of smoked goats’ cheese from La Palma served with a tomato jam and cod scratchings – made from the skin and subcutaneous fat of the cod, slow baked in the oven until crunchy and topped with sea salt from Fuerteventura. To the table, and home made raisin and chorizo breads with herb butter and a beautifully and unusually presented starter of tuna in a spicy escabeche sauce with avocado, red onion and

dusted with a powder of dried tomato. Mi potaje be berros followed - a creamy potage of watercress garnished with sweetcorn, slivers of tender onion, kidney beans and croûton sized pieces of gofio bread and grilled, smoked belly pork. For the fish course we enjoyed tender chunks of grouper in a taste sensation seafish sauce with a crushed parsley sauce made in a pestle and mortar and dressed with seed sprouts. The meat dish was melt-in-the-mouth, marinated, pink loins of kid goat with tiny slivers of liver, a young aubergine grilled and a flavourful cream of ‘black’ potatoes. For dessert we were served thinly sliced El Hierro pineapple marinated in fresh ginger accompanied by an ice cream made from palm tree honey and garnished with a confetti of edible petals and leaves and to round off, we were given petit fours consisting of a miniature selection of typical island cakes, sponges and biscuits and chocolate truffles. The wines selected were Contiempo Selección Especial white from the Güímar valley, the Viña Norte Crianza from Tacoronte Acentejo for the red and a delightful finely chilled Mozaga muscatel to accompany the dessert and petit fours. The whole was a complete and thoroughly enjoyable culinary experience not to be forgotten and bodes extraordinarily well for the new season’s menu now on offer at Las Aguas for hotel residents and all discerning diners.

As the new year gets underway, those of us unlucky enough to live in frosty nor-thern climes start to think of a home in the winter sun. our reasons are various, but predictable: investment returns, the quality of life, the cost of living, crime, short days and long cold nights all serve to imprison us in homes. life goes by and we glue ourselves to our televisions, watching others living and enjoying it. We stop work, retire and that time which we had hoped would liberate us from responsibility and set us free becomes set in the rhythm of the TV guide.

No wonder so many people choose to invest in a property in Tenerife. Unshackled by the sun, pasty pensioners take tentative footsteps outside; rediscover life, enjoyment, and pleasure. Life takes on a new sense of purpose, aches fade away, and faces rediscover little used creases that used to be smiles. Tenerife inspires.Investors too have joined the holiday home revolution, realising that the combination of capital growth and rental income can lead to returns that beat the stock markets and leave the banks standing. More new investors are choosing property in Tenerife over other options every day.

The island has been successfully pursuing a strategy of ‘smartening up’ in the recent past. Facilities and infrastructure have been undergoing a facelift in order to attract more affluent market sectors. New residential properties have also been designed with this in mind, being more spacious and built to a higher standard, using better quality materials. An excellent example of this is Rutland House, which is now available for purchase. It is a magnificent independent villa completed in 2009 and located in one of the most prestigious areas of South Tenerife, overlooking the famous resorts and beaches of Costa Adeje. This spectacular home of the highest quality has 490m2 built on a plot of 1,000m2 and boasts a very large living room, spacious dining area seating ten people, 4 bedrooms, Study / 5th bedroom, 4 bathrooms, guest WC, independent fully fitted kitchen with laundry room and pantry, bodega, underground parking for six cars and of course a private outdoor heated pool and barbeque. With a villa of this quality it goes without saying that it has luxury fixtures and fittings,

Around the world on a cruise shipby gerald ruben

In our last edition we looked around at Auckland. This month we will explore a little more of new zealand. Having left Auckland we have now arrived on the South Island of new zealand. The South Island is the larger of the two islands, though really there are three if you count Stewart in the far South.

South Island is more pastoral, not a big city island but it has some of the most spectacular scenery the world can offer. The island is dominated by the Southern Alps running west of centre from the northeast to the southwest. Christchurch, situated in the Canterbury region, is the largest city with under half a million people. It was around the ninth century AD that Polynesian islanders whom we now know as Maoris, sailed here from the North in their canoes. They lived on a strictly tribal basis, a life that was often brutal and nasty and generally short. Life was based on the survival of the fittest and cannibalism was rife.

The waterfall at Jacksons retreat

Page 47: The Magazine 49

the magazine 4

It really wasn’t until Captain Cook arrived on the Islands in 1769 that anyone showed any interest. His relations with the Maoris were good (at least they did not eat him), however they might have considered the idea once they realised that he had claimed their land for the British Crown and soon a fortune seeking trickle of settlers began to arrive. Today the population of four million are 75 per cent of European origin and the vast majority of those came from the British Isles.Your ship will dock at Lyttelton which is at the

head of a beautiful harbour 11 miles from the centre of Christchurch. It was at Lyttelton that the flax merchants used to do business with the Maoris, and whalers used the harbour which several million years ago was an active volcano. Lyttelton has recently enjoyed something of a face lift with the restoration of many colonial style houses and the introduction of trendy restaurants and speciality shops. In our next edition, we will explore Christchurch and the Canterbury Plains.

Upper cut for distance

Golf lessons can be provided by

P.G.A. Professional, Javier Toll-Messía

Every golfer wants to hit their drives a long way. To maximise your distance, let me give you a tip on the ‘upper cut for distance’.As you can see in this picture, I have set my alignment stick at the height of the teed up ball for my driver. This is a great launch angle to maximise distance. Make sure when you tee it up that the middle of the ball is level with the top edge of your driver.

Page 49: The Magazine 49

49

golf IOn your backswing make sure you create lots of width. I mean make sure that at this position your arms are well away from your chest!

Top of the backswing. We should make sure that we have reached the top with a broad shoulder turn and with your back facing the target. 90 per cent of your body weight should be on the inside of your back foot.

As shown in this picture, where I am using my driver’s head cover as a boxing glove, you need to create for yourself a mental picture of hitting the ball with your driver as a boxer would deliver a lethal blow with his upper cut. This analogy of upper cut into driving a golf ball will help you with your launch angle and subsequently will improve your yardage.

To get yourself into a powerful finish posture you should try to unwind with lots of freedom in your shoulders and hips until you try to make your right shoulder the closest part of your body to the target when you finish your swing.Try this on the range to boost your confidence and your distance!

The Callaway Diablo Edge Driver is the latest addition to the popular and attention-grabbing Diablo range and boasts the largest sweet spot of any titanium driver produced by Callaway. Callaway’s engineers have guaranteed the weight efficiency of the Diablo Edge golf driver by using a four piece, ultra thin titanium construction process with each component made to exacting standards and fused together to precisely distribute the weight. This greater weight efficiency allows the Diablo Edge to offer extra distance and a penetrating ball flight. Continuing their commitment to using the very latest technology in designing their clubs, Callaway have introduced a new Chemically Milled Hyperbolic Cup

Face that uses a chemical reduction process to produce extreme precision in clubface thickness. This encourages consistently high ball speeds across the large Diablo Edge Driver sweetspot. A new, aerodynamic clubhead has also been introduced which has helped Callaway reduce drag by up to eight per cent while a weight chip positioned to the rear of the clubhead produces a slight draw bias along with Callaway’s highest ever moment of inertia. All these changes work in tandem with the exclusive Aldila Habanero shaft to make the Callaway Diablo Edge driver one of the most forgiving, consistent and high performing drivers that Callaway have produced.

callaway diablo edge

Driver

The Callaway Diablo Edge Fairway Wood takes the foundation laid by the Big Bertha Diablo fairway woods and develops them into an even more impressive model with between 10 and 12 yards being added to your shots. Callaway have improved their excellent Variable Thickness Technology to provide the Diablo Edge fairway wood with a much hotter, more aggressive clubface that consistently delivers much higher ball speeds. As with the Diablo Edge driver the fairway features Callaway’s

highest ever moment of inertia which has been achieved by redistributing most of the weight to the perimeter of the club. Committed to pushing the boundaries of technology, Callaway have also provided the Diablo Edge fairway with the deepest centre of gravity they have ever achieved in a fairway wood to help promote both distance and height while the slightly larger clubheads make the Diablo Edge accessible to every level of player.
