New Lutterworth Town Mayor

Being someone who was born and bred in Lutterworth, I am honoured to have been elected as Mayor of Lutterworth for the 3rd time.

My Mayoral year is likely to be an 'interesting' one as I and my fellow Councillors will need to look to achieve the best we can for residents in the light of Lutterworth East and the expansion of Magna Park.

I truly believe we need to ‘fight' both Harborough and Leicestershire County Council to achieve the best deal we can for the town. I will do all I can to achieve this. I am looking to work with other organisations in the town, not least the Lutterworth Retail Forum, to promote the town and all that it has to offer. Lutterworth, despite the challenges we face, is a wonderful place to live and deserves the support of everyone living here. I will be striving, through a recently formed tourism working group to highlight what it has to offer.

I will also be looking, through several events during my year (not least the annual wine fair on Saturday 5th October) to raise funds for my Mayor's Appeal which, this year will be divided between the Community 1st Responders (attending and assisting in accidents until an ambulance arrives) and Age Concern Lutterworth.

Lutterworth Lions “It was with a heavy heart that I announced to my fellow Lutterworth Lions that I would be standing down as President of the Club. I felt that I had taken the Club as far as I could during my tenure and that someone else should take over with fresh impetus and hopefully encourage new members to join and carry on with the wonderful work that The Lions do within the community.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Lutterworth Lions for all their help and support over the last two years and wish them all best wishes in their future endeavours.

Also many thanks to all the volunteers who have helped with the Christmas post, (both sorting and delivering) and the Easter Egg Hunt, without their help, neither would run as smoothly as they do each year. Last, but by no means least, the wonderful people of Lutterworth and District for their generosity and support”.

Minibuses available for hire by local Community Groups

and Societies

To enquire or book these or one of our many other trips – call us on

01455 555571 or email:

[email protected]

Consider Our Minibus For Your Cause? In addition to running our own trips, our mini-buses are also available for hire by local ‘not for profit’ organisations and groups. Examples of this would be; sports clubs, scout groups, dementia association, stroke clubs, DoE etc. As long as it is not purely a social trip, but has a purpose for residents of the Lutterworth area – you could use one of our mini-buses.

All are equipped with a lift to help access for those who have concerns with mobility. If you are able to provide your own driver, this helps - and they would be provided with familiarisation of the vehicle in advance of the hire period. Alternatively we can normally offer one of our volunteer drivers for your trip.

Lutterworth Food Bank Thanks to everyone who has supported Lutterworth and Villages Food Bank with both food and funds over the past few months. We continue to see a surge in the need for our services and your donations are absolutely vital to our smooth running.

Please keep up-to-date with our latest most needed items by following us on Twitter and Facebook plus checking our website. Twitter @LuttFoodBank Facebook: Lutterworth and Villages Foodbank www.lutterworthvillages.foodbank.org.uk

Our Food Bank has seen a 23% increase in emergency food parcels given out between April to March 2017/18 and April to March 2018/19 with over 1500 parcels being given to clients visiting our distribution centres; almost 20 tonnes of food! This highlights what a critical part we play in supporting our local residents in Lutterworth, Countesthorpe & the surrounding villages. As part of The Trussell Trust, we do our bit to support the campaigns and lobby for change, so that the day comes when we are no longer needed. Do check out #5weeksTooLong to join the campaign. Lutterworth Model Railway Exhibition & Classic Bus Display

Over the weekend of 4th /5th May Lutterworth Railway Society held a model railway exhibition at Lutterworth Sports Centre to commemorate 50 years since the closure of the Great Central Railway through the town.

The exhibition consisted of 15 layouts, 9 displays from local groups plus 10 traders. In parallel a classic bus service was operated on both days to the Town Hall for an Art

Exhibition run by Lutterworth Art Group and Cotesbach for railway films run by C o t e s b a c h Educa t i ona l Trust. With 627 visitors this was the biggest attendance for over 15 years.

During the weekend Lutterworth Railway Society made a donation of £3,000 to the Warwickshire Air Ambulance. This was from funds raised from the sale of model railway equipment from former member Robert Lovegrove who died in 2017 leaving his model railway collection to the society. In his memory a trophy is awarded each year to the model layout that receives the most votes from the v i s i t i n g public. This year the winner was the N gauge layout Bear Creek that is based on modern Canadian Railway practice.

BBQ Salmon Fillet with Lemon Dill

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 whole salmon fillets about 750g each, skin on

• A large handful dill, roughly chopped

• 2 tbsp roughly chopped chives

• 2 lemons thinly sliced

• Olive oil

Serves 10 or you can use two thick 500g salmon for 6 people

PREPARATION AND COOKING TIMES:

Ready in 40 minutes

METHOD:

Lay one side of salmon skin-side down and cover with the roughly chopped herbs. Top with a layer of lemon slices and season well.

Put the other piece of salmon on top, skin-side up. Tie the salmon pieces together

securely - you can use raffia or string for this, just make sure it's wet to stop it burning. Brush the salmon all over with olive oil and wrap in a double layer of tin foil.

Cook the salmon on a wire rack on the cooler part of the bbq for about 7 minutes on each side then remove the salmon from the foil and put back on the rack. Cook for a further 3-5 minutes on each side until the skin is charred and the fish cooked all the way through. Lift off carefully.

Cucumber, Chive & Yogurt Dressing Slice a whole cucumber in half lengthways and scoop out the seeds using a teaspoon. Thinly slice the cucumber and sprinkle with 2 tsp sea salt, set in a colander over a bowl and leave for one hour. Rinse the cucumber slices and pat dry on kitchen paper. Mix with 1 tbsp chopped chives and 300g natural yogurt and season.

Serve with fresh herbed green salad, cherry tomatoes & new potatoes.

How Well Are You Breathing? An often-overlooked effect of the modern lifestyle is on our natural breathing pattern. The natural breath that we are all born with is one in which the whole belly expands as a breath is taken in and as we breathe out the belly sinks back. The way a new-born baby breathes as it sleeps, is a perfect example of this natural and easy breath. However, societal norms and a rise in stress levels have altered this pattern.

It is not uncommon for people to breathe mainly from their chest space or for the belly to pull in on the inhale (think sucking in the belly to get on some skinny jeans!). As well as this, the average number of breaths per minute is also much higher in the west. This indicates that we are taking more frequent, but shallower breaths. These sorts of disordered breathing patterns can be contributing to stress related health problems.

The good news is that we all have access to improving our well-being through conscious breathing. This is an aspect of yoga that is accessible to everyone and could be considered one of the most important parts of the practice. If you would like to breathe better and feel amazing for doing so, why not give a local yoga class a go?

Age Concern Lutterworth & District were delighted to organise a 90th Party Event held on May 21st at the Lutterworth Wycliffe Rooms. Anyone celebrating their 90th year and older were invited with a guest to enjoy a free lunch and afternoon entertainment.

This was made possible by the very generous donation of £1,000 from The Four Seasons Charity. After a lovely lunch cooked by Wycliffe Catering, everyone was entertained by the Lutterworth U3A Ukulele Group and the U3A Songsters, everyone joining in with singing along to some old-time songs.

There was also the chance to view some memorabilia from the memory boxes kindly provided by Lutterworth Museum.

It was lovely to see so many amazing 90 pluses attend the event, two ladies who attended have known each other and been friends since they were 4 years old. A bouquet of flowers was presented to Mrs Pat Carpenter by Mick Brown from The Four Seasons Charity to a wonderful lady celebrating her 99th year.

Reflexology

Julia Harrision is a Clinical Reflexologist having obtained a level 5 Centralia Mastership from Jubilee College. This is currently the highest qualification available to reflexologists in the UK. Julia is always happy when meeting people who have heard about reflexology, it seems to be an area that is currently growing in recognition.

How do reflexes work? Everyone knows how the sole of your foot feels if you step on a sharp stone. Firstly a reflexive action occurs throughout your body, you withdraw the foot from the stone and at the same time you feel a rush of adrenaline as well as changes in your balance and the way your internal organs function. This is basically how reflexology works it all happens reflexly throughout the nervous system. Results from treatments do vary from one person to another but generally you may feel more relaxed during and after a treatment, experience improved sleep and have a feeling of wellbeing. Reflexologists do not claim to diagnose, prescribe, heal or cure.

Why use reflexology? It’s a non invasive treatment, it does not involve any drugs, it’s easily available and at the very least you have some time to relax. One of the most common areas for the use of reflexology is in easing stress which is thought to be a major contributing factor in illness. A stress researcher Hans Selye noted as far back as 1956 that it is not simply stress itself but prolonged exposure to stress that causes wear and tear on the body. Reflex work breaks up patterns of repeated stress by treating the body to an experience different from the mundane and everyday. It gives the opportunity to check out from the stress of daily life.

Injury to any part of the body can stress the whole system. As reflexology releases endorphins, the body’s natural pain relieving chemicals, this can help the body to adapt to the injury.

Reflexology can be used to help people who suffer from headaches, stress, anxiety and menopausal issues and many other health issues, so why not give it a try. JOIN OUR CELEBRATIONS! Kimberley House Riding For The Disabled Group is

50 years old! Our Gala afternoon on Sunday 30th June will be opened by local Eventing Hero Imogen Murray, who will also be giving a riding demonstration. Other displays include our riders - all from Ash Field Academy - battling it out against Witham Villa's Pony Club in the Countryside Challenge.

There will be something for all to enjoy - bouncy castle, prosecco bar, games, stalls, food and Birthday cake.

All are welcome and we are trying to bring together as many former Kimberley House riders, volunteers and supporters as possible, because without all their input we wouldn't be able to offer children with physical or learning disabilities the chance to horse ride today.

There is still space for stalls and we would welcome any offers of help to make the event run smoothly. All stalls and attractions except for the main demonstrations will be under cover at Witham Villa Equestrian Centre, Cosby Road, Broughton Astley, LE9 6PA.

Leicester Animal Aid A rescue and re-homing Centre for cats and dogs based in Huncote was thrilled to welcome special guests and supporters to the official opening of its ‘Paws-a-While Garden.’

A once overgrown and neglected corner of the site has been transformed into an oasis of peace and tranquility thanks to Mars Petcare who funded and created the garden. Last year more than 120 volunteers worked tirelessly to turn the unloved area into a haven for wildlife and a place for people to come to enjoy being close to nature.

Guests attending the official opening, which included some of the teams that created the garden as well as Leicester Animal Aid staff and volunteers, enjoyed exploring the garden and listening to music provided by Enderby Brass Band. After being dormant over the winter months the garden is now bursting with life and colour.

The idea behind the garden was to create a space that, together with providing somewhere for people coming to the Centre to visit, could be used to bring people together and be used by different groups and organisations. If you could spare some time to help keep the garden looking at its best or if you know any community groups who would benefit from visiting the garden, we’d love to hear from you. Who would have believed that we could have had such good weather for our Plant, Craft and Food sale on Sunday 12th May following a rather indifferent week leading up to the event?

We raised over £5,000 with 1,111 adults attending and over 70 children, some of whom who enjoyed having their faces painted - displaying them with some glee at the gate as they and their parents left laden with plants together with a range of craft goods and food delicacies.

The DIY contingent was not disappointed with a wide range of tools and garden implements, reaping some £900 for a range of charities and run by Rotarian Bernard Johnson who is beginning to make a name for himself at the Annual Shows he has supported over the years.

Alongside this was the ever popular Concours D’Elegance of Classic and Vintage Vehicles - the winners being Geoff Hamblin with his immaculate 1930 Austin ‘Heavy 12’, Graham Surman and his 1934 Riley Lynx, and Ian Robertson and his 1962 Austin Healey 3000.

Dorothy Greaves came up trumps in raising a staggering £280 which she has most generously donated to the work on the Town’s ‘Narrows’ tidied and created with the help of Lutterworth Rotary members.

Thank you all for making it such a successful day.

50 NOT OUT! Edmonds & Slatter Opticians had a double reason to celebrate. Assistant Manager Carol Barker and Laboratory Administrator Lynn Shalvey both celebrated a combined 50 years’ service, 25 years each!

Carol has played a pivotal role at the Glenfield practice having started as a receptionist there back in 1993 and Lynn has remained a constant figure of order and efficiency in the spectacle glazing laboratory situated at the Blaby practice.

Tim Cole, Dispensing Optician and Partner at the Leicestershire Independent Opticians said, “Carol is such a familiar face at the Glenfield practice and around the village, people are always asking after her. Her dedication and willingness to go beyond the call of duty are why Edmonds and Slatter have such a good reputation for customer service. Carol’s efforts are much appreciated by patients and colleagues alike”.

Tim continued, "I am proud that so many staff members who joined in the early days are still with us. Our reputation is thanks to the efforts of our staff. We take great pride in our professionalism, aiming to be the best in our field rather than the biggest. Lynn is another ideal example of the staff we have - loyal, conscientious and hard working. Her efforts make a tremendous difference to the success of our business".

As a gesture of gratitude for their longstanding and impeccable service Carol and Lynn were given flowers, jewellery and gifted holidays abroad from the partners at Edmonds & Slatter. Both ladies are in good company as more than half of the current staff at the opticians have been working there for over 10 years!
