Congratulations!

We are quickly approaching the end of another exciting year at Lockview School. On behalf of all the staff, we would like to extend a sincere thank-you to our wonderful families and school community for being so supportive of our student programs and initiatives. Working together with such a great staff, students and parent community continues to make our role as Principal and Vice-Principal of Lockview School a truly rewarding experience.

As you know, it takes much planning and organization to make a year successful for students at our school and that includes extracurricular events and activities. We salute the staff and parents who really make it all possible! We appreciate everything they do for our students, school and community! Their dedication and passion ensures that the students of Lockview continue to achieve personal successes academically, athletically and socially.

As we continue to plan for our 2013-14 class organization, it is important for us to know if any students will not be returning to Lockview, or if there are new families moving into our area. If you are aware of either of the above possibilities, please let us know as soon as possible. This information will assist us in more effectively planning for September by minimizing surprises and disruptions for class organization!

With approximately 17 instructional days left in the school year, teachers are continuing their ongoing assessments of student learning to prepare for report cards, which will be sent home on Wednesday, June 26. It is very important that students finish the year demonstrating excellent study habits and attendance.

There are many interesting and educational activities planned for the month of June. Please take some time to review the attached calendar to keep track of important dates.

We look forward to seeing everyone in September!

COUNTDOWN TO KINDERGARTEN…

If you live within the Lockview School boundaries and have a child who will be 4 years of age by December 31, 2013, he/she is eligible

to attend Junior Kindergarten beginning September, 2013.

Please drop in to the school office and register your child. Please note that proof of birth and proof of immunization are

required to complete registration. Legal documents regarding custody arrangements are requested as well.

ROBOTICS NEWS…

On Thursday, May 16, Lockview was represented by 6 teams at the annual

DSBN Robotics Competition. They worked hard, ate a lot of pizza, and did an exemplary job representing our school. A special congratulations goes to the team of Braeden A, Matthew K, Sydney H, and Jennifer N, which won the Intermediate Division for the day. Mr. Wiebe would like to

thank all the students who participated in robotics this year, and

hopes that they'll come out again next year. Thanks also to the parents who helped us with transportation

this year!

On Tuesday, May 28, TVO Kids featured Katie Weeks in

celebrating her outstanding efforts to raise funds and

awareness for her foundation, Nets for Kids. Katie's hard

work and determination helped donate over $1000 in mosquito

nets to help protect children in Burkina Faso from malaria. In case you missed this excellent

broadcast, you can catch Katie's streaming episode on www.tvokids.com. Click on

League of Super Citizens and enjoy this tremendous clip.

On May 7th, Lockview was represented by three grade 6

students - Kailey H, Evan B, and Paige M - at the 10th Annual DSBN

Heritage Fair. The students participated in three workshops in the morning including a Canadian

Trivia Challenge, Artifacts Discovery, and the judging of their projects by local historians. In the

afternoon, students travelled to Fort George and Queenston Heights to see significant locations from the War of 1812. Lockview's very own Paige M

was recognized for her project on Wayne Gretzky by the Ontario

Historical Society with the Award of Excellence, "in recognition of

outsanding student achievement in history and heritage."

Congratulations to Paige as well as Kailey H for her project on the

history of Tim Horton and Evan B for

his on Sir Isaac Brock!

Grade 8 Graduation It’s hard to believe that June has approached us so quickly and we’re already preparing for

Lockview’s Grade 8 Graduation Night. We look forward to this very special occasion, as we

celebrate the elementary learning journey and anticipate a fresh, new chapter of learning in high

school. Below you’ll find preliminary information regarding our Graduation Night.

Our graduation ceremony for our students and their parents will be held on the evening

of: Wednesday, June 26th

at 6:00pm, at Laura Secord Secondary School. A stand-up

reception will take place directly following the ceremony at Laura Secord.

The graduation dance for our graduates will follow the reception and will take place in

our gym at Lockview School. The dance will commence at 7:30pm and finish at

9:00pm.

A full rehearsal will take place for the graduates during the morning of Wednesday, June

26th

.

While graduation is a very special event and we do expect the attire to reflect this, we do

not expect students to spend large amounts of money preparing for this night. Tuxedos,

evening gowns or extravagant transportation modes aren’t necessary. Thank you for

your understanding and support.

This is a very special time, a milestone in their educational career and we are very excited to

attend our graduates’ ceremony. More information will be sent home to grade 8 families closer to

the big event, but if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call the school.

*Just a reminder that there will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, June 7th. That date is a scheduled professional activity day for our teaching staff.

*Final report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, June 26th.

A message from the TLC…

Thanks to all the families who came out to the Movie Night and making it a huge success! Special thanks to Stephanie Damiano for her hard work in putting it together. The first T.L.C. meeting for 2013 - 2014 has been set for September 24th at 6:30 p.m. Please come with your fundraising ideas and think about volunteering for TLC positions. Volunteers are always needed.

On Friday, June 21st, the primary students will be traveling to African Lion Safari. As a means

to begin their exciting education on jungle animals of Africa that they will be sure to

observe first-hand, students participated in a day of cross-graded activities. They learned about a variety of animals and also had the

experience of working with peers from different classrooms, including junior and senior

kindergarten students. A special thank you goes out to Ms. Eden for organizing this memorable event. Here is one students’ impressions of the

day’s activities:

On Tuesday, May 21 all of the kids from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3/4 participated in cross-graded activities. We travelled to different classes

so that we could learn about jungle animals. We learned about zebras, gorillas, peacocks, lions,

hippos, giraffes and elephants. We all had an awesome time!

STUDENT PLACEMENT FOR 2013-2014

It appears from the information we have at this time that there will be several split grades again next year. When we form

classes a great deal of consideration goes into the placement of pupils to provide the

best possible academic and social environment possible. Some of the factors

considered include: social maturity, organizational skills, learning style, ability to work independently, academic ability, class

dynamics as well as attitude toward, and commitment to, school work. We all want what is best for the children at Lockview

School. If you have a specific request about your child’s placement for the coming school year, please submit them in writing to the

attention of Mr. Blake by June 6th. Only

written requests to Mr. Blake will be considered. Parental requests will be

considered in conjunction with the factors listed above, although we cannot guarantee that requested placements will be fulfilled.

Our goal is to provide a learning environment in which all of our students will

be most successful.

On Wednesday June 5, the PALS leaders will be

hosting a book exchange for primary and junior

students. Primary/Junior students are invited to bring in

gently used books on Tuesday June 4 and Wednesday

June 5. They will receive a ticket for each book they

bring in (maximum of 3 books) and can exchange that

ticket to select another book to take home at the book

exchange on June 5. Please review your child's choices

and agree to the books being donated.

SEPTEMBER BELL TIMES

On September 3rd 2013 Lockview School will transition to an 8:25 am START and a 2:55 pm DISMISSAL. The new bell times for the

2013-14 school year will accommodate a change in our bus routes and provide a cost savings to the DSBN.

The new school day at Lockview will be as follows:

8:25 am - 9:15 am Period 1 9:15 am - 10:05 am Period 2 10:05 am – 10:45 am Nutrition/Recess BREAK 10:45 am – 11:35 am Period 3 11:35 am – 12:25 pm Period 4 12:25 pm – 1:15 pm Nutrition/ Recess BREAK
