In the garden of God, each of us performs the task that God has assigned. Some plant, others water, but it is God who makes things grow.
And whether we plant or water, we work together as a team.
We are fellow-workers in God’s service. We are God’s garden.
-- 1 Corinthians 3:5-9
Growing up, my family always had a large garden in the backyard. Dad had a disc plow
for the back of his Montgomery Ward’s riding mower that he used to break up the soil.
With stakes and string we lined up the rows, and with our hoes, we made shallow trenches
for planting the corn. We also grew small, sweet, Michigan strawberries, leaving the
tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, pumpkins, and green beans to my grandparents’ gardens.
Between all the gardens in our family, we had a mini-farm.
Later on, life changed though. Mom was
working more at the church, we kids were
getting older and busier, and the season for
our laboring in the garden was ending.
About that same time, we had friends who
were moving to a nicer house nearby, but it
had considerably less land, and they would
no longer be able to garden. So my parents
decided to let our friends continue to garden
out of our backyard. It was a fine arrange-
ment. They were over often to plant and
weed and water and pick. We helped where
we could, but our involvement had evolved
from gardening fruits and vegetables to growing friendship.
This September, our church family will begin celebrating a theme for the coming program
year: We Are God’s Garden. Whatever our abilities, whatever our gifts, whatever season
or circumstance of life we find ourselves in, we all have a place in that garden. Whether
we plow or plant, till or toil, it is God who gifts us with growth. Whether we water or
weed, prune or pick, we work together as a team, as fellow-workers in God’s service. And
when we take time simply to enjoy the field together and to eat of its fruits, we will know
what a blessing it is to be God’s garden.
So as the program year begins, let us prepare the soil of our souls. Sow the seeds, and trust
the promise. Let Christ grow in you richly, and the Spirit blossom through us abundantly,
as we bear fruit together in God’s garden. Pastor Larry

FALL SUNDAY SCHOOL….
…….. begins on Sept. 9th and we plan to have a fun cel-
ebration! The United Methodist Men are putting on a
Pancake Breakfast at 9:15 for all the Sunday School
children and their teachers! What a great way to start
the year……good food, good friends, and an awesome
God!!
Some special instructions for 9:15 Sunday
School: Parents, please plan to arrive early that first
Sunday. There will be greeters at the doors and maps to
help you find your child(ren)’s classrooms. After walk-
ing with your children to their rooms, please go to Fel-
lowship Hall to register ALL children from birth to
Grade 5. The children will go to the breakfast with
their class, as the parents go to worship.
For 11:00 Sunday School: please go to Fellow-
ship Hall to register your children before the Worship
Service. Then, preschoolers may go to the nursery for
childcare, and older children and youth go to worship
with their parents. During the service, children in
Grades K-5 will be given the opportunity to leave the
service and go to a Mixed-Age class with their teacher.
Older children and youth stay in worship.
We are looking forward to an exciting year!!
Hope to see you there!!!
HELP A CHILD GROW IN FAITH
“Pastor Larry, oh, so merry,
How does God’s garden grow?”
As we discussed our church-wide theme for this year,
“We are God’s Garden”, I started thinking about the
ways our church helps our children grow in their faith. It
takes a lot of people to nourish these tender shoots and
help them grow into strong and healthy
plants…….parents, teachers, the church family. Our
Children’s Ministries programs provide a strong founda-
tion for that growth and you can be an integral part of
that foundation.
You can be a Sunday School teacher or helper.
There are still openings on our staff, just waiting for you
to come forward to serve the Lord and the children. Will
you say “yes”? At 9:15, you would teach/help every oth-
er month, and there are substitutes who can take your
place when you can’t be there. At 11:00, you teach once
every 6 weeks. Or you can be a substitute teacher and
teach or help when needed. Curriculum and training are
provided.
Maybe you aren’t comfortable being a Sunday
School teacher, but would like to work with children and
youth in another way. How about our Wednesday night
LOGOS program? There are many different ways you
can be involved there….preparing dinner, doing cleanup,
playing games or singing songs with the kids, leading a
Bible Study class, and so much more!! .
If you have attended our church for at least 6
months, I hope you will prayerfully consider joining us in
these wonderful Children’s Ministries. Please contact me
for more information.

CHANGES IN 9:15 SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR
OUR PRESCHOOLERS
As the teachers and I have evaluated the class sizes for
this fall, we have decided to change the configuration of
the classes as follows:
Children from birth through age 2 will be in the
Nursery with Miss Jeri and her helpers.
Children ages 3 & 4 will meet in God’s Country (also
known as the Sunny Day Preschool room) by the
Nursery.
Children age 5 and Kindergarteners will meet in the
Nazareth Classroom #120 in the hallway under the
sanctuary.
This is the name of the new
program for 9:15 Sunday
School for Grades 2-5 this
fall. Living Inside Out is as experiential as it gets.
With interactive worship, memorable games, instant
skits, innovative experiments and more, the kids will
spend their time doing the Bible lesson, not just listen-
ing to it. After gathering in their classrooms, they will
all go to Fellowship Hour for a half hour top-notch
large-group experience, full of lots of energy. Then
they will go back to their graded classrooms to dig
deeper into the lesson with age-specific apply-it-to-life
activities in their small groups. Kids live out their faith
with the Daily Challenge take-home activities that can
involve the whole family.
We are VERY excited to present
this new program!! Our topic for September
is “Star Quest: God’s Nature.” Bring your
children, grandchildren, neighbors, friends,
anyone you know to this God-seeking experi-
ence!!
We are also introducing a new curriculum
called “Grow, Proclaim, Serve” for our younger grades.
However, they will remain in age and grade-level class-
rooms as in previous years.

Did you know…
The Worship and Arts
Committee has established, orga-
nized and worked the Annual Church
Rummage Sale for eleven years. You
may wonder what has happened to all
the funds generated by these sales.
It began with accumulating the money which re-
paired the aging plaster and painted the sanctuary as well
as installing the milk-painted beadboard along outside
walls. Over time, rummage sale profits have paid for the
decorative painting in the Sunday School hallways and
some classrooms as well as the Fellowship Hall and the
overflow room. Window shades have been purchased and
installed, artwork has been purchased, framed and hung,
and some furnishings have been purchased. These funds
also facilitated the creation of the church library and
helped pay for the remodeling of the family bathroom.
Now, the sanctuary floors have been refinished
and new carpeting will soon be installed. All the money
needed for these projects has come from rummage sale
profits with no money being taken for the general church
budget.
As a committee, we congratulate you, our church
family, for all your generous giving of goods, energy and
time for each rummage sale. Thank you and look around
in quiet celebration of God’s blessings and presence
among us. Nancy Ochoa
VBS Mission Projects Results
Just wanted to let you know that during the
week at VBS we collected $1,069.65 for the Haiti Hot
Lunch Program. Then at the Sunday morning VBS
programs, we collected an additional $497.95 for a
grand total of $1,567.60! Hallelujah!!!
PRAYERS and SQUARES, the Prayer Quilt
Ministry, will meet on Tuesday, September 11 at 9:00
a.m. in Nazareth. Everyone interested in this great minis-
try is invited to join us. Bring your current projects for
Show and Tell. We will be talking about the future of this
ministry. Questions?

PENNY JUG RETURNS
As most of you know, our
"penny jug" has been a fixture
in the Fellowship Hall where
you pick up your coffee on
Sunday morning, since 2004.
She has been "in hiberation" for
the last few months but is ready
to make her appearance once
again. We hope you will drop
your loose change into the jug
from time to time. She also
loves dollar bills! Since starting her mission in 2004,
she has collected $2056 for various mission projects
and that is a lot of pennies!!!!
This year half of the money in our jug will go to the
Red Bird Clinic in Beverly, Kentucky, to help them
provide medical services, home health care, a dental
clinic and ambulance service for low-income rural
residents of that area.
The other half will go to "Nothing But Nets" which
helps save lives by preventing malaria through net
distribution. Malaria is a leading killer of children in
Africa. One bed net costs just $10 to buy and deliver
to individuals in need. One bed net can safely last a
family for about four years, thanks to a long-lasting
insecticide woven into the net fabric.
STEPHEN MINISTER OF THE MONTH
SEPTEMBER 2012
RALPH RESEIGH
Ralph was commissioned as a Stephen Minister in
2009. Ralph expressed interest in training to help fill a
need that existed back then for men to become Stephen
Ministers.
After Ralph was commissioned, he quickly took on a
care receiver that was dealing with health issues and
job loss. Ralph was able to be a constant source of
support for this man. He then went on to minister to a
man working through the intense emotions of a divorce.
Ralph once again with much love, kindness and con-
sistent support made himself available until this person
was in a better place.
What is truly amazing about Ralph is that he provides
this support while juggling full time work, caring for
family and grandkids that also need him. Additionally,
he keeps himself busy with church activities such as
being on Trustees.
Ralph has a huge heart that is ENDLESS in giving.
He loves to share a good laugh and is very eager to
ALWAYS help out wherever needed. He has been
instrumental in letting men know that reaching out for
help when you are going through a tough time is the
right thing to do.
RED BIRD BABY SHOWER
It's not too early to start purchasing items for our 8th
annual Red Bird Baby Shower which will be held on
Sunday, October 7 in Fellowship Hall. As the
summer clothing goes on sale in various stores, this is
a perfect time to make purchases. More info coming
later.
Thank you so much for the calls, cards
and prayer regarding our mom’s passing.
We really appreciate the thoughts & cars
from our wonderful church family.

LOUMC Financial Perspective
Welcome to the latest update from your Finance Committee. In last month’s edition I informed you that the
General Fund was in a deficit (negative balance) of $58,000. Well as of the end of July, the deficit has grown to
almost $65,000 (see chart below).
While at first glance it may appear that the expenses may be the problem, the actual year-to-date expenses are run-
ning approximately $7,000 below the budgeted amount. The yearly General Fund budget is determined based upon
a comparison of the prior year’s expenses and income, and the expenses so far this year is similar to last year. This
means that the deficit is a result of the income being significantly less than what was expected.
The congregation should be proud of the ministry that we offer the community, and the wonderful facilities and re-
sources that we have available. In order that we do not impact this ministry, we will all need to make sure that ex-
penses are continue to be controlled and will need to increase the income to a level that will cover those expenses
and erase the deficit. If everyone was able to increase their giving by 25% over what it has been for the rest of this
year, it should go a long way towards eliminating the deficit. I pray that in next month’s article I will be able to tell
you that we have been able to eliminate some of the deficit. Thanks you for your continued support of LOUMC.

Dear LOUMC Family:
Thank you all for your kind words of support,
cards and prayers during my mom’s (Nancy Woods)
illness and after her death. Knowing that the love of
our church family surrounded us always was a great
source of strength.
The Lemke Family,
Beth, Keith, Lauren & Bea
