    PREFACE

    Fornearlytwentyyearsprior totheyear1881theauthorwas

    deeply engagedinvestigatingthehiddenrealmsofoccultforce.The

    resultsofthesemystical laborswereconsideredof greatvalueand

    real worthbyafewfriendswhowerealsoseekinglight.Finally,he

    wasinducedtoplacethegeneral resultsoftheseresearchesintoa

    series oflessonsforprivateoccultstudy.Thewhole,whencompleted,

    presentingthedual aspectsofoccultloreasseenandrealizedinthe

    soul andthestars,correspondingtothemicrocosmandthemacrocosm

    ofancientEgyptandChaldea, andthusgivingabriefepitomeof

    Hermeticphilosophyastaught bytheHermeticBrotherhoodofLuxor,

    Egypt.

    Thechiefreasonurgingtothisstepwasthestrenuousefforts being

    systematicallyputforthtopoisonthebuddingspiritualityof the

    westernmind,andtofastenuponitsmediumisticmentality,thesubtle,

    delusivedogmasofKarmaandRe-incarnation,astaughtbythe

    sacerdotalismsof thedecayingOrient.

    Duringthesetwentyyearsofpersonal intercoursewiththeexalted

    spiritual compassofthesoul,aswell a sthereal secretsofitsown

    theosophy.Asarace,theyhavebeen,andstill are,travelingthe

    ofthebuddingSixthRaceoftheFourthRoundofhumanity.Today,

    theworldisexperiencinganawakeningoftheintellectual,reli gious

    andspiritual sensesandisalsoexperiencingthesecondcomingofthe

    Christ asprophesiedinScripture.Therefore,theauthorfeels t hisis

    thepropertimetopresenttheoccultknowledgeput forthinthisbook,

    Thedescendingarcoftheirspiritual forcekeepsthemboundtothe

    dogmas,traditionsandexternalismsofthedecayingpast,whosereal

    secretstheycannotnowpenetrate.Theeverlivingtruthsconcealed

    beneaththesymbolsintheastral lightarehiddenfromtheirviewby

    INTRODUCTION

    Attheveryfirst stepthestudenttakesintothehiddenpathway

    ofNature'smysteries,heismetfacetofacewiththisstartli ngfact,

    thatall hispreconceptions,all hiseducation,all hisaccumulationof

    materialisticwisdomareunabletoaccountforthemostsimplephe

    nomenathattranspireintheactionandinter-actionofthelifef orces

    oftheplanetonwhichhelives.Asachemist,hemaypursuethe

    atomsofforceuntil theybecomelostwithintherealmsoftheim

    ponderable,"thegreatunknown,"or,asit hasbeenfacetiouslychris

    tenedamidthegroansofscientifictravail,"theachingvoid."Buthe

    cangetnofarther.Asaphysicist,hemaydecomposelightandsound

    intotheircomponentparts,and,withscientificaccuracy,dissectthem

    beforeyourveryeyesasasurgeonwouldhisanatomical subject.But

    nosooneristhispointreached,thantheshymoleculesandtimid

    vibrationsbecomealarmedasitwereatman'sdaringpresumption,and

    flyintotherealmoftheinf initeunknown.There,in"theachingvoid"

    tosportindelight,safefromman'sintrusion.Thisrealmoftheun

    knownimponderablesistheuniversal ether,aninfiniteoceanof

    something,whichsciencecreatedinherfranticendeavorstoaccount

    forthematerial phenomenaof lightandheat,andforatimeshewas

    infinitelypleasedwithherownpeculiar off spring. Butit has become

    arestlessphantom,agrim,unlovelyspectre,whichhauntsthelabora

    tories ofherparent,nightandday,until atlastsciencehas become

    frightenedather ownchild,andtriesnowinvaintoslaytheghostof

    herowncreation. Shedaresnotenterthe"achingvoid"shehascalled

    intoexistence,andtherepursueandrecapturethetruantatomsand

    timidvibrationsofthissublunarysphere.

    Therefore,attheveryoutset ofhispilgrimagethroughthesevast

    andas yet"scientificallyunknown"regions,thestudenthadbetter

    unload,sotosay,all theheavyanduselessbaggageofeducated

    opinionandscientificdogmasthathemayhaveonboard.Ifhedoes

    not,hewill find himselftopheavy,andwill eithercapsizeorrunoff

    thetrackandbeburiedamidthedebrisofconflictingopinions.The

    hasbywhichtoguidehimself inhiswinding,unevenpathuponthe

    shoresoftheInfiniteheneverneedfearbeinglostorfail inginhis

    endeavorstoknowthetruth.

    Inordertocarryoutthesamelineofreasoningalittlefurther,let

    ustakeatypeof architecture,saytheGothic,andmentallyexamine

    somewell knownhandsomespecimenofthi sstructura l conception.

    Theworld'sthoughtwill say, "whatabeautiful building;howim

    posingandgrand; whatatriumphofman'smechanical skill!"Soit

    appearstotheworld,andupontheplainofappearances,soit reallyis.

    Consequently,itisatruthf orthetimebeing.But whenexamined

    bythelightofOccultscience,wefindthistruthisrelativeonly,that

    itis onlytrueupontheexternal,transitoryplaneofmaterial phe

    nomena.Weseethat,inadditiontobeingtheresultofman'strained

    mechanical ability,iti salsotheexternal formof hismental ideal.It is,

    infact,thephenomenal outcomeofhiscreativeattributes.Whenwe

    lookatthesolidbuilding,fromtheearth'splane, weseeonlythe

    outsideofathinghavinglength,breadthandthickness.Nowsince

    weknowthattheremustbeaninside,wemustenter theinteriorplane

    beforewecanseeit,andthereinweshall findthatit exists withinthe

    subjectiveworldofitsarchitect.Thesolidstoneedificewill,i ntime,

    crumbletodecay, fall, andfinallynotonematerial atomwill remain

    toindicatetheplacewhereonitstood.Henceitisnotpermanently

    real,it isonlyapassingappearanceassumedbymatterunderthe

    mouldingforcesofman'smechanical ability.Assoonastheforces

    whichgaveitformbecomepolarizedbytherestlessoceansofplanetary

    magnetism,itwill dissolveandfinallyvanish"likethebaselessfabric

    ofadream."Butthoughtheexternal structureofstoneandmortaris

    lostwithinthesoil oftheearth,thei deawhichcreateditiseternal,

    becauseitwasaspiritual reality.Therefore,weseethattheabsolute

    truth(theeternal reality)appearstobethenon-reality,upontheplane

    ofmatter,whilethematerial structureappearstobetheonly thing

    whichisreal.It isthesedelusiveappearancesthathavecreatedthe

    almost hopelessconfusionregardingtheexactmeaningoftheterms

    "Spirit"and"Matter."Sciencerefersall shecannotgrapplewithto

    someoftheundiscoveredforcesof"Matter,"whiletheologyrefersall

    thatshecannotexplaintotheunknowableworkingsofthe"Spirit."

    Bothareright,andbotharewrong.Andasweshall havetoexplore

    theterritorybelongingtobothofthesetermsduringtheprogressof

    ourjourney,wewill int hisplacebrieflyaddthat spiritandmatter,as

    weknowthem,arebutthedual expressionoftheoneDeificprinciple,

    duetodifferencesofpolarity.Inother words,aunityundertwomodes

    ofaction.Thisdualitycanonlybecomprehendedinitst ruerelation

    shipwhenviewedfrombothplanesandrealizedbythescienceof

    correspondences,whichscienceisbutamaterial systemofsymbolism

    fromwhichwecanjustlyregulateourconceptionsofall things.

    Platooncesaid,"Ideasruletheworld." SofarPlatowasright;

    for,beforethedivineideawasevolvedfromwithinthedivinesen-

    soriumoftheInfiniteOne,theuniversewasnot.Hencetheresultof

    thedivineideawastheevolutionofapuresymbolicform.

    Justassymbolsaretheproductofideas,so,intheirturn,i deasare

    thesymbolsofthought,andthoughtitselfisbutt hesymbolic response

    oftheEgotothepulsatingthroboftheDeificwill,t hedivineradiant

    soul of theInfiniteOne.Backofthiswecannotpenetrate,evenin

    ourmostexaltedconceptions. Henceall seriousstudyandmeditation

    astothenatureandexistenceofGodisunprofitableandcannotbring

    thestudentanysubstantial r eturneitherinthisworldorthenext,

    seeingthattheInfinitecanneverbecomprehendedbythefinite.

    Therefore,wemustrestsatisfiedwiththecertainknowledgethatwe

    canby onegrandchainofsequencestracethetransmissionofthoughts,

    ideasandsymbolicformstotheirsource.

    Thustheangelicworldisbut aprototypeorsymbolicexpression

    ofthedivinesphereoftheInfinite.Thecelestial worldisareflection

    oftheangelicworld.Thespiritual worldisaprototypeandsymbolic

    outcomeofthecelestial heavens.Theastral worldisthereflectionof

    thespiritual sphere.Andlastly,thematerial (our world)isbutthe

    concreteshadowof theastral kingdoms.

    Hencethereadercanperceivethatwe,inourpresentstate,are

    alongwaydowninthescaleofcreativelif e.Butifweare,weknow

    bythelawsofourbeingthat wecanandshall winourwayback

    throughthisvalleyoftheshadow,thisplaneofinvertedimagesand

    delusiveappearances,intothebrightrealmsofour formerstate,those

    spheresofpureangeliclifewherealoneexisttheeverlivingrealsof

    all theinfinitudeofapparentrealities.

    Involution

    "Being,Uncreated,Eternal,Alone,"saysDr.JohnYoung,when

    speakingof"theCreatorandthecreation;"certainlynoinspiredwriter

    everpennedamoresublimetruththaniscontainedintheabovewords.

    Purespiritisdiffusive,nonatomic,uncreated,formless,self-existent

    being. Silent,motionless,unconscious,Divinity;possessinginits sub

    limepuritytheonesoleDeificattri buteexpressibleinhumanlanguage

    asabsoluteandunconditionedpotentiality.

    Suchistherealmofspirit,which,forthesakeof linguistic con

    venience,hasbeentermedbytheOccultist"therealmofunmani-

    festedbeing."Withthefirst emanationofthisinconceivablestatewe

    havenowtodeal. TheKabbalah,oftheearlyJewishrabbis,contains

    longandelaboratetreatisesuponthevariousemanationsoftheten

    sephiroth,whichforthemost partarewritteninsuchanallegorical

    styleastobepracticallyuselesstomostWesternstudents,andeven

    toOriental mindsareunsatisfactory,andinmanyrespectsmisleading.

    Thefirstemanationfromthisrealmofspirit(formlessbeing) claims

    thestudent'sclosestattention.ItformstheDeifickeynoteofthedivine

    anthemofcreation.Thisfirst emanation,calledbytheKabbaliststhe

    Crown, means,whenstrippedofit smystical veil,simpleandnaked

    activityormotion.Thusweseethatthefirst actionofDivinity(un

    consciousmind)isthought,andthoughtimpliesvibrationormotion.

    AtthemomenttheDeificmindvibrateswiththought theresprings

    forth, fromtheinfinite wombofcreation,theduadofall futuregreat

    ness.ThisduadistheKabbalistical twins,"LoveandWisdom," which,

    inturnmeantheattributes,attractionandrepulsionofforceand

    motion.Theyaremaleandfemale,co-equal andco-eternal,andexpress

    themselvesexternallyasactivityandrepose.

    Nomatterhowreconditeorabstruseourspeculationsmaybe,

    whentheorbitof ourmetaphysical meditationiscompleteweshall

    findourselvesfacetofaceagainwithouroriginal startingpoint,which

    isthisinfinite triadofLove,WisdomandCrown,or,in other words,

    theoneprimal forcecontainingunlimitedpotentialitieswithinitself.

    Backofthiswecannotgo.Withthisdivinetrinity orGodhead,as

    studentsandinvestigatorsof Nature'soccultmysteries,wemustrest

    contented,consolingourselves,whenever necessary, withthecertain

    knowledgethatthenearerweappeartoapproachthegreatwhite

    throneoftheInfiniteOne,thefurtherdoesthatdivinecenterrecede

    fromus.Ifthiswerenotso, t herecouldbenosuchthingaseternity

    fortheatomsofdifferentiatedlife.Consequently, theimmortalityof

    thesoul wouldbeanemptydream,amerefigment,hatchedbysome

    infernal powerwithintheoverheatedimaginationof poordeluded

    man.

    Beforegoingfurther,thereadershouldcommittomemorythe

    followingprimarydoctrines,taughtbytheOccultiniti atesof all true

    wisdom.Theyaredoctrinestousinourpresentstate,insofar

    thatwecannotdemonstratethemexternallybyanyknownformof

    experiment.

    I."Thewholeuniverseisfill edwiththeDeificpresenceofGod."

    Thatistosay,theuni\erseispermeatedwiththepure,motionless,

    formless,spiritofDivinity.

    II."Theuniverseisboundlessandunlimited,acirclewhose

    circumferencei severywhereand whosecentreis nowhere."Theuni

    verseisdual andconsistsof themanifestandthenon-manifest.Hence

    Deityisprogressiveinhisinfinite schemeofspiritual unfoldment.

    III." Thedivineonelifeprincipleemanatesfromthepurevortices,

    thecentral Spiritual Sunofthemanifesteduniverse.Fromthismighty

    infinitelyfine. Thenegativerayisevertendingtowardastateof

    reposeorinertia,anditsatomsarecoarseandlooseascomparedwith

    thoseofthepositiveray.It isthesubstanceformedbythenegative

    raythatconstituteseveryspeciesofmatter,so-called,fromthein

    conceivablyfineetherealizedsubstance, whichcomposestheforms

    ofthedivinearchangelsofthesun,downtothemineral veins of

    densemetal intheearth.

    Therefore,whenspeakingbroadlyofspiritandmatter,theterms

    areperfectlyunmeaninginanoccultsense,forthatwhichwecall

    spirit isnotpurespirit,butonlythepositiveor activeattributeofthat

    whichwetermmatter.Hencematterissofarunreal,itisonly an

    appearanceproducedbythenegativeray, andthisappearanceisthe

    result ofpolarityormodeof motion;thepositiveisstraight andpene

    trating,thenegativeisroundandenfolding.

    Withthisbriefbutnecessarydigressionweresume. Fromthe

    sevenangelicstatesbeforementioned,spiritual involutioncommences.

    Eachoneofthesevenspheresisareflectionof oneofthesevenre

    fractedprinciples,whichconstitutethedivinemindoftheangelic

    creators.Fromthisreflectionspringforthangelicraces,secondonly

    inmental powerandpotentialityto theirparents.Then,inturn,are

    producedstill lowercelestial states,eachstateorspherecorresponding

    Evolution

    ThetermevolutionisfromtheLatineandvolvo,whichmeansto

    roll from,orunroll,andtheevolutionofmattermeanspreciselywhat

    thetermimplies, viz.,unfolding,expanding,openingandevolving.

    Thewholeof whichcanbesummedupi nthe wordprogression.

    Matter,perse,isthepolaroppositeof manifestedspirit.It isthe

    reactionofspiritual action. Itisenergyinastateofrest. Iti sforce

    andmotioninanexactstateofequilibrium;inshort,mattersimply

    meanssolidifiedspirit.Whentwoimponderableequal forcesfrom

    oppositedirectionsmeeteachother,bothpowersbecomepolarized,

    forceisresolvedintoinertia,motionistransformedintorest;inother

    words, spiritbecomesmatter, itsrefinementoritsdensitydepending

    uponitsdegreeofetherealization.

    Theprogressionandultimationoftheli feforceslatentwithin

    matter,mustbeaccomplishedbyaprocessofunfoldment.Thepoten

    Theevolutionofmatter,likeeverythingelsewithintherealms

    negativerayexternalizedandinastateofcrystallizedinertiathen

    Sexis dual,andfi ndsexpressioninthephallusandyohni of

    animatedNature.Thissamesexual lawoperatingthroughoutNature

    limits thesourcesfromwhichourknowledgeofNaturecanbeobtained;

    inotherwords,therearebut twosourcesfromwhichknowledgeof

    anykindisreceived;oneissubjective, theotherobjective;theformer

    givesusknowledgeofthespiritual orcausal sideof thecosmos,the

    latter givesthematerial side, whichistheworldofeffects, onaccount

    ofits beingevolvedoutoftheformer,asthepoet hathsaid;

    Thegreatfirstcausehasevolvedoutof himselftheesoteric, or

    subjectiveworld; andoutofthesubjective,byasimplechangeof

    polarity,whichatoncebringsforthachangeofenergyandsubstance,

    hehas evolvedtheobjectiveworld.Therefore,theantecedents ofthe

    objectivearetobefoundinthesubjectiveworld.

    Wehavenowcompletedthecyclicoutlineofourpresentresearch,

    and,asaresult, weknowthatthepoint ofcommencementinmaterial

    evolutionwhichwehavethusfarbeenseeking,lieshiddenwithinthe

    realms ofspirit, ofwhichrealmwehavealreadyspoken,inchapterone.

    InordertoclearlycomprehendNature'sprocessesintheunfold-

    mentof matter,acareful studyofthesevencreativeprinciplesisvery

    necessary,notstudiedassomanyintelligenciesor statesofconscious

    life,butassevenprinciplesorforces, which,thoughunconsciousand

    blindintheiractivitiesthroughouttheirdifferentspheresofoperation,

    yetactstrictlyin harmonywitheachotherastherefractedpartsofa

    whole, fulfillingt hecreativedesign.Thesesevenprinciplesarenotin

    themselvesintelligent,butaresimplypowersdirectedbyintelligence,

    justastheelectriccurrentisapowerwhich,whengovernedbyin

    telligence,becomesamediumfortheexpressionofthatintelligence

    andcapableoftransmittingitsmaster'sthoughtsanddesires, instan

    taneously,toanypartoftheglobethat hasbeenpreparedtoreceive

    harmonyarethesevenangelicworldsmentionedintheprevious chap

    followsthattheobjectiveworldofmattermustbeaperfectepitome

    asolidifiedexpressionofitsprogenitors,andmustcontainwithinitself

    thelatentattributesofits spiritual source.

    Powers,likeindividuals,arelimitedintheiracti vities.For instance,

    beforeelectricitycanmanifestitselfasl ightorpoweritmusthave

    somethingtoactupon,apointofcontactorrapport,atthepoint or

    placeofmanifestation.Asstatedintheaboveillustrationof the

    electriccurrent, theplaceandobjectofsuchphenomenamusthave

    beenpreparedfor theexpressionofsuchpower.Hencethenecessity

    (ifwemayusesuchaterm)oftheobjectiveworldbeingaperfect

    epitomeofandcontainingthelatentattributesoft hehigherandmore

    interiorworldsofcause.

    Ifthis werenotsotheperfectevolutionofmatter wouldbean

    impossibility,becausenosubjectivepower,stateorprinciplecanact

    orreactuponanobjectiveformunlessaportionof itselfl ieswithin

    thatform.Wemustcarrythislineofreasoningalittl efurther.

    Man,in hisphysical body,isa perfectepitomeoftheplanetupon

    whichhelives,whilethecelestial worldsfindtheirperfectexpression

    inhis soul,andtheseworlds,inturn,arebutthe higherandmore

    interiorexpressionnotonlyofman'sphysical organism,butof the

    earthonwhichhelives.Wesee,therefore,howbeautifullyhar

    moniousMotherNatureis,eveninhermostsecretparts.Shehasmade

    everyknown"thing"dependent uponasomethingelse,andall

    things,therefore,aremutuallydependentuponeachother.Evolution

    TheprimaryideaswhichwederivefromChapterI,areasfollows;

    I.Thatthemacrocosmistheobjectiveimageofthedivinesubjective

    idea,andthemicrocosmisareflectionofthemacrocosm.II.Thatthe

    former,asawhole,isessentiallywithoutform,notonlybecauseit

    consistsofsuchaninfinitevarietyofforms,butbecauseoftheend

    "Theprimordial essence,"saysPlato,"isanemanationfromtheDemiurgic mind,"

    whichmind,"containsfrometernitytheideaofthenatural worldwithinitself."

    Hefurtherassertsthat,"He(theDemiurgus)producesthedivineideaout of

    himselfbythepowerofhiswill."

    Thusonlyre-expressingtheselfsameHermeticdoctrineelaboratedbyold

    Hermes atthe verydawnof Occultphi losophy.

    Inorderthatthelawsofcrystallizationmaybeclearlyappre

    hended,wemuststateat thecommencementthatcrystallizationmeans

    death. Bydeath,wedonotmeandeathintheordinaryacceptationof

    theterm,butwemeanthelowestpossibleminimumintheactivities

    offorcethestatewecall inertia.Thismuchbeinggranted, weare

    assumedtobeatthebeginningofoursubject,andalsoofphysical

    creation.

    Thefirstactincreation,accordingtotheHebrewcosmogony,was

    thecreationoflight,GenesisI,3.,"andGodsaid,lettherebelight,

    andtherewaslight."Aswehavealreadyseen,theboundlessrealmof

    universal ethercontainingunconditionedpotentialities, requiresbut

    thefaintestrippleorimpluseofthedivinemindtosetiti nvibration,

    and,instantly,thereflashesforthLIGHT,heat,magnetismandmolec

    ularforce;inshort,ouruniversebeginsthegrandmarchofcosmic

    evolution.Thefirstlogical effectofthisvibrationwaslight,adisrup

    tivecentrifugal force,anditscorrelativesradiatinginstraightl ines, in

    all possibledirectionsfromacenter,whilefromeachlineof force

    minorraysradiateateverypossibleangletotheaxial ray.Wehave,

    thus,attheveryoutsetofourconception,acompleteandperfectnet

    workofrays,orlinesofenergy,movingattherateofl ight, 185,000

    milespersecondthroughtheformless,motionless,ethereal,medium

    ofspace.

    Itwill helpusinourconception,ifwecall tomindthefact that

    matter,toproduceinusthesensationswerefertomatter,mustpossess

    atleastthreedimensions,viz.;length, breadthandthickness,andeach

    ofthesedimensionsrequiresatleasttwoequal forcesforits expression;

    also,thatall thesesixequal f orcesmustbeconcentrateduponasingle

    impenetrableatomicpoint,and,lastly,thisimpenetrableatomicpoint

    mustalsoconsist oftwoequal forces.Therefore,toproduceasingle

    grainofsolidmatter,asolitaryminutecrystal,itrequiresthecomplete

    polarizationofeightraysof cosmicenergy.

    Ourfirstduty,then,istodi scoverour impenetrableatom.When

    twoequal forcescomingfromoppositedirectionsmeeteachother,

    bothbecomepolarized,astateofinertiais produced,andanatom,a

    veritablematerial atom,isthephysical resultofthischangeofenergy.

    Fromtheinfinitenetworkofraysproducedbythefirstvibrationsof

    light, i tiseasytoconceiveoftheinstantaneousevolutionofanun

    limitednumberof material atomsfromtheequallyunlimitednumber

    afterall,i snothingbutanunknowablesomething.

    Thispolarizedsomething,however,givesusthefirst dimension

    ofmaterial forms.It isapointinspace,andifwenowtaketwomore

    equal forcesatthispolarizingpoint,wehaveanotheratom,which,

    althoughitgivesusnothingintheformofasolid,yetwill supplyus

    withtheseconddimension,viz., astraightlineor apointextendedby

    anadditional point. Letusnowtakeour impenetrableatomicpoint,

    consistingofasingleatom,andsupposethatfourequal forcesare

    concentrateduponit,onefromtheright anditsopponentfromtheleft,

    onefromaboveanditsopponentfrombelow(seefig.1),andthere

    sultis,wepossessanideal f orm,butstill nosolid;wehavebothlength

    andbreadth,butnothickness,henceitisonlyahigherformofthe

    seconddimension. But,insteadoffour,letusnowsupposethatwe

    havesixequal forcesconcentrateduponourimpenetrableatomic

    point. Inadditiontothosewhichcomefromabove,below,rightand

    left,wehavetwomorewhichcomefromtherearandthefront, (see

    fig.2)Force1comesfromtheright,it sopponent2fromtheleft; 3

    comesfromabove, itsopponent 4comesfrombelow; 5comesfromthe

    rear,itsopponent6comesfromthefront.Now,whatistheresult?We

    havelength,breadthandthickness;wehavesixequal sides;andour

    unknowableatomicsomethi nghasbecomet ransformedint oanult i

    matemolecule,whosecrystallizedsubstanceisacube.Ithasall ofthe

    elementsofasolidf orm,thoughitcanbemeasuredonlybytheimagi

    nation,sincemicroscopesarenotyetpowerful enoughtoreveal the

    firstoriginal f ormsofcrystallization. Man'sphysical senses aretoodull

    toperceivesuchthingsbutit maybethisatomicagewill produce

    someelectrical oratomical instrumentsensitiveenoughtodetectan

    original atomofmatter.Butsuchwonderful transformationsas take

    placecanbeseenonlybytheeyeofthespiritual soul whosepiercing

    sightcanpenetratethemysteriesofNature'sWorkshop,theastral

    light. It isfromthissourcethattheprinciplescontainedintheabove

    illustrationswereobtained.

    Wesee,therefore,thatlogicallyit requiressixequal forces,meet

    ingat anatomicorimpenetrablepoint,toproducesoliddimensional

    matter.Itmay,ofcourse,bemanymorethansix,justsothey approach

    inpairsfromoppositedirections.Theonlydifferencewouldbeinthe

    formofthecrystal.Bykeepinginyourmindsthattheatomicpoint

    canbemadebyforcesfromall possibledirections, youwill seethat

    asthepossibleanglesareinfinite,so thepossiblecrystalsareinfinite,

    all instrictconformitytothemathematical law,"eachkindofcrystal

    isthetypeofthesubstanceitforms."

    Sofar,wehavespokenonlyofthethreeexternal dimensionsrecog

    nizedbyscience. Therearesevendimensions,inall.I nthischapter

    weshall speakonlyofthefourth,whichwasfirstintroducedtothe

    noticeofsciencebyProf.Zollner,inhis "Transcendental Physics."No

    matter howsolidanyexternal objectmayappear,it isnotso, forevery

    moleculeofwhichitconsistsformsanextremelysmall atomicsystem

    ofsatelliteatoms,revolvingaroundtheironeprimaryatom,which

    formstheimpenetrablepointofeverycrystal.Thereisspacebetween

    everyoneofthem.It istheseunoccupiedspacesthatformthefourth

    dimensionofmatter.Note;theabovewaswrittensomeseventyyears

    ago,nowthatour atomicageisgettinginto theseriousstudy ofthe

    hiddenforcesofNatureall sortsofundreamedofphenomenaarebeing

    broughttolight. Onlytimewill showhowfarmanmaygoinexploring

    theuniverse.

    Tode-materializeobjectivematterandresolveitintoit soriginal

    elementsrequirestheapplicationofanexternal forcepowerful enough

    topolarizethecohesiveaffinityof theatoms.Ifinthede-materializing

    process,electricityist heforceused,thef ormisdestroyed, asfaras

    theexternal planeisconcerned.Thischangereleasesatomicenergy.

    But,ift heforceismagnetic,theobjectisonlyetherealized,andin

    thisstatematter canbemadetopassthroughmatter,andtheinstant,

    themagneticdissolventiswithdrawntheobjectwill reassumeits

    original objectiveshape.

    Weneedscarcelyadd,that,i nthisnatural f actliesthesecretof

    spiritual materializingphenomenaofmodernspiritualism,anditforms

    thetruefoundationofall magical manifestationsofaphysical nature.

    Astrongphysical medium,eventhoughahelplesstool underthecon

    trol ofaveryquestionableclassofinvisibles,canproducephenomena

    equallyaswell astheli vingadept.Theonlydifferenceis,that, the

    mediumcannotcontrol eitherthespiritsorthephenomena,whereas

    theadeptcommandsbothatwill andthusaccomplisheshisdesire.Of

    all creatures,MANalone,hastheGodgivenabilitytoconsciouslyde

    velophisspiritual senses(becomeanAdept,trulyunderstandlife)so

    astobeabletousetheminobservingtheoperationsofthetruelaws

    oflife andthuslearnthecausesofwhatweexperiencehereonearth.

    Ifrightlyused,thisoccultknowledgecouldcorrectmanyhuman

    errors,raisethemoral andspiritual st andardsofmenandthusaidin

    theactual establishmentofa sincerefraternal societyofall menhere

    onearth.

    Ifit werepossibletoreducemagical sciencetoatechnical

    formulathefollowingwouldbe,withincertainlimits,scientifically

    correct;"Asthedensityoftheatomsistothemassofthesubstance,

    soisthepowerofcohesiontotheformofthearti cle."Masterthat

    magical receiptandyouwill beabletoworkwonders.

    Fromtheprincipleselucidatedinthischapter,thereaderwill per

    ceivethatifall theforcesoftheuniversewerebalanced,theexternal

    result wouldbeacompletestopintheprogressiveworkofcreation.

    Thevarietyofsubstancewouldbeendless;therewouldbeaninfini

    tudeofcrystals, andourearthwouldbenothingbutadeadcrystallized

    sphere.All forces,whenbalanced,makecrystals,butnomotion.Crys

    tallizationisthenegationofmotion.It isdeath. Inournextchapter,

    ourenergieswill bedirectedtowardthepolaroppositeoftheinert

    THEORIGINOFPHYSICALLIFE

    "Mightyoaksfromlittleacornsgrow."

    Whenwespeakofthegenesisoflife,wemustbeunderstoodto

    mean"theoriginofphysical life"andnott hegenesisoflifewithin

    thedivinesuper-celestial sphereofGod'sinfinite creation.

    Man,hisconstitution,fromwhencehecame,andwhitherhis

    cyclic journeywill carryhim,isall t hatembodiedmancanhopeto

    understandduringhissojournupontheexternal planesofmatter.The

    exaltedadeptcravesnomore, infacthecannotobtainanyabsolute

    knowledgebeyondthis,becauseitisimpossiblefor himtorealize

    anythingbeyondhimself.Theperfectman,whileincarnatedwithin

    theastral vorticesofhumanity,cannotpentrateandknowthedetails

    oftruthbelongingtothepurelyangelicstate.Beforehecandothis

    hemustbeforevertranslatedfromtheastral sphereoftheplanet

    whichgavehimbirth,and,hehimself,becometheangel.The

    mightiesthierophant(HermesTrismegistus)thisworldhasever pro

    ducedhasonlybeenabletospeculateastodetailswithinthese

    exaltedstates,andsuchspeculationswithoutcorroborativetesti

    mony,areasvalueless,whenusedasthefoundationforasystemof

    thought,asthespeculationsofanyreligiousenthusiast.Theonly

    differencebetweenthetwoconsistsinthedifferentplanesoccupied

    bytherespectivespeculators.

    Theinvolutionof spirit,andthere-activeevolutionofmatter,

    arebaseduponabsolutelaws, whichmanmayrealizeforhimself.

    Thatoneformdisappearsonlytogiveplacetoanothermoreperfect,

    isafactobservedthroughout Natureinall herdepartments,andthose

    whopossesstheattributesof soul-sight inasufficientlydeveloped

    state, canperceivethehiddenpotentialitieslatentwithintheoutward

    form.Thisbeingso,andweassertofourownspiritual experiences

    thatit istrue,thenweknowthatprevioustothisevolutionwhichwe

    candistinguishtakingplaceall aroundus,theremusthavebeena

    processofinvolution,bywhichtheselatentpotentialitiesbecamein

    volvedwithinexternal matter.Fromnothing,nothingcanbepro-

    duced; itisthereforeonlytheblind,unreasoningatheistwhocancredit

    suchanillogical creedastheonewhichhasbeenthussummarized,

    Whateverwedo,or whateverwelearn,

    Intimeweshall all intonothingreturn."

    Tothecold,heartlesssupporterofthissoul annihilatingsystemof

    nothingness,whoflauntshissuperficiallylearnedauthorityunderthe

    plausiblenameof Agnostic,wereplywiththefullyrealizedcon

    sciousnessofadeathless,progressiveimmortality,

    Fromaninfinitesourcemidst realmsofli ght,

    AnoffspringfromGod,mysoul tookits flight;

    Togainamidstmatter,withitstrialsa ndpain,

    Theknowledgeto carryit homewardagain.

    Theimmutablelaws ofNature maybetraced backwardinto

    remoteerasofsunformation, orcarriedforwardbeyondthepurview

    ofthepresentintotheequallydimvistasoftheeternal future,by

    thosewhocanseeandrealizeforthemselvestheplanesofbothcause

    andeffect.Tobeabletodothiswemustattainuntothesoul stateof

    equilibriumwherebothrealmsunite,wherethereisneithercausenor

    effect,butwherethetwoareone.Itisfromsuchastatethatthe

    teachingscontainedinthisworkwerederived,andassuchwedesire

    themtobecloselystudied.

    Thegenesisoflife mustbeviewedfromthesevenplanesofits

    manifestation,tobethoroughlyunderstood.Theseplanes,takenin

    theorderoftheircyclicevolution,areasfollows;I.Celestial;II. Spir

    itual; I II.Astral;I V.Mineral;V.Vegetable;VI.Animal;VII.Human.

    Fromtheseventhorhumanstatethelifeatomsagainpassthrough

    theastral andspiritual to thecelestial;thecompletecycleofnecessity

    beingcomposedof tengreatcycles,correspondingtothewell known

    Kabbalistical "Sephiroth."At present,weshall onlyspeakofI, IV,

    andV, thesethreeconstitutingthefoundationsfromwhichtheothers

    arise.

    I.TheCelestial State

    Ofthisstateit isimpossibletogivemorethanageneral outline,

    containing,asit does,themysteryofthoseinconceivablelaws,bythe

    operationofwhichtheEgobecomesaselfactingentity.It must

    sufficetosay,thatit isthisstateof celestial lifewhereinislocatedthe

    purely embryoniccenterinthedivinearcofprogressivebeing.

    Thisisthepoint wherethediffusiveintelligenceoftheinfi nite

    spirit becomesdifferentiatedandatomic;yes.werepeattheword;

    thedivineEgoof thehumansoul isabsolutelyatomic.Itisa self-

    existingabsoluteatomofJehovah-God,(aChristChild)whichitis

    impossibletoalter, transform,absorborannihilate,fromthesupreme

    moment ofit sdifferentiation.It isaseternal andimmortal asthe

    infinite,of whichitformsapart.Butthoughatomic,iti sonlysoas

    apurelyspiritual conception,apointofradiantlight,freef rommatter,

    andincapableofunitingitself withitexceptbymeansofreflection.

    Theprocessofdifferentiationnowclaimsourattention.Thispro

    cessisconsummatedwithinthecelestial matrixofangelicparents.

    By"angelicparents"wemeanthosedivineentitieswhodwell within

    thevariousspheresofpurifiedangelhood.

    NOTE:Wedonotusethetermangel inthesenseimpliedbyordinarylexi

    cographers,whointerpretthewordas"aspirit,servantormessenger,"butweuse

    itto meanthehighestandmostinterior stateofl ifewhichitispossibleformortal

    mindtograsp.It is infinitelyabovetheso-calledspiritual sphere.

    Thetwinsouls,maleandfemale,orheavenlyOsirisandIsis,

    (fatherandmother)formtwohalves,themasculineandfeminine

    attributesofthedivineEgo. Theyhavetheiralternatecycles ofac

    tivity andrespose.Duringthecycleoftheirfruit ful activity,thetwo

    naturesrespondwithintensevibrationstothedivineanthemofcrea

    tionwhichcreatesaninfluxoft heformless,motionlessspiritintothe

    celestial sensoriumuntil thewholespherebecomesradiantwiththe

    scintillationsof spiritual harmony.Obeyingthecreativeimpluse,these

    streamsofspiritual forceflowalongtheconvergentpolesfromthe

    variouscentersofthesphere,eachforcefromthemalebeingmet

    andbalancedbythatofthefemale,thecontactproducing,bythe

    exactequilibriumofthemasculineandfemininenatures,theliving,

    external sparksofimmortal life.I notherwords,theseangelicvibra

    tionstransformtheformlessintelligence,whichhasbeenindrawn,

    intoactiveeternal Egos.Asmanonearthisthenatural outcomeof

    theprocreativepowersofearthlyparents,sothedivineactivitiesof

    theEgoarethespiritual results,inonesense,of thecreativeattributes

    ofangelicprogenitorsinthecelestial worlds.But wemustnotbemis

    understooduponthispoint.TheEgoisnotcreatedintheangelic

    letus assumethattwoofthesixforcesarelessthantheiropposites.

    Saytheonefromthe"front"andtheonefromthe"left".I tis evident

    thatweshouldhavemotioninacurve.Butinasmuchasall theothers

    arethesameaswhenweassumedourpoint,itis plainthatthismotion

    inacurvewill beinthesameplaneofsurface,andwill,in time,de

    scribeacircle.Butletusassumealsothatanotherforceislessthan

    itsopposite.Saytheonecomingfrom"above."What havewenow?

    Ouroriginal pointwiththreeofits forceslessthantheiropposites.

    Theresultwill bemotion,notmotioninastraight line,butinacurve,

    butnotacurveinthesameplaneofspace,andhenceitcannever

    describeacircle,butwill formaspiral.Thisspiral islife. Thatisto

    say,itist hemotionoflife.Justkeepclearinyourmindthatifone-

    halfoftheprimitiveforcesthatmakeanimpenetrablepointareless

    thantheiropposites,andyouhavetheessential ideaofali feforce.

    Chemical forceisdeath,that is,balanced,still a ndmotionless.

    Thespiral motionisthetypeoflife.I tisthemotionoflif e.Iti sa

    spiritual screw,withall themechanical advantagesofascrewinpene

    tratingtheuniverseofmatter.Thespiral variesinmagnitudefrom

    theinfinitelygreattot heinfinitesimallysmall. Conceivethelesser

    forces tobebutaninfinitefractionlessthantheiropposites,thenthe

    spiral will bealmostinfiniteinit ssweepofcurve,andwill require

    almost aneternitytoreachitsculminatingpoint.Onthecontrary,

    thegreaterthediversityinpowerthelesswill becomethecurve,until

    wehavetheinfinitesimallysmall spiral thatwill culminatealmost

    instant ly.Thusb etweentheset woextremeswehaveevery phenom

    enonoflife,fromthatoft hetiniestinsecttothegreatcosmiclifeof an

    astral universe.

    V.TheVegetableState

    Sincewehavefoundthatmotionisthel ifeofmatter,wemust

    nowseekforastill higherform,theimmediateproductofmatter.

    Wethereforeaskthestudenttomentallybridgethedistancebetween

    theformationofacrystallizedatomtotheevolutionofaplanetwith

    itsgaseousenvelope,calleditsatmosphere.Thisdone,wewill care

    fullynoticetheevolutionof thefirstrudimentaryformsofvegetable

    lifefromwhichprimal formsall theinfinitevarietyofthevegetable

    kingdomareevolv ed.

    Havingmadetheassertionthatthespiral isthemotionoflife,

    assertion.Assomesortofexternal evidence,then, letuscall toour

    ofplantstheleavesaresoplacedthatal inewoundaroundthestem,

    andtouchingthepetioleofeachleaf,wouldbeaspiral.Wherethe

    leaves areintworows,thespacebetweentwooppositeleavesisjust

    halfacircleorcircumferenceofthestem,andwheretherearethree

    rows,it isone-thirdofthecircumference,andsoontoaregularsuc

    cessiveseriesindifferentplantswhichexpresstheratiosof 1-2,2-5,

    3-8,5-13,2-21,13-34,21-55.Theexternal facts,demonstratedby

    botanical science,notonlyconfirmourassertion,butalsotendto

    showthatvital forceissubjecttomeasurementin theplant.

    Inordertounderstandhowthevegetableevolvesfromthemin

    eral,notonlymustthespiral motionof lifebeheldinview, butthe

    variouschangesofatomicpolaritymustalsobeclearlyapprehended.

    As,forinstance, theatomsofoxygenandhydrogenbyacertaincom

    binationproducewater.Inthisunionbothbecomepolarized,and

    formasubstancewhichisthepolaroppositeoftheir original inflam

    mablestates.Fromthischangeofpolaritywehaveclouds,oceans

    andrivers.Whenthevaporfromthesewatersisdrawnupwardby

    theheatofthesun,aninfinitelysmall fractionbecomesdecomposed

    intoitsgaseousstate.Althoughdecomposed,theatomsareactually

    thesameastheywerepreviously,aftercombininginthesubstance

    knownaswater.Theyhaveonlyreceivedadifferent angleofmotion.

    Whereasbeforetheyrotatedinacircle, theynowascendandrevolve

    intheformofaspiral.In thisascensionfromearththeyattractorare

    attractedbytheatomsofcarbonicacidgas,andinstantlyaviolent

    rotationamongthevariousatomsisproduced.Theycombineandlo-

    anothertransformationhastakenplace;anewthinghasbeenpro

    duced, viz.;amoleculeorgermofphysical life.Underthecontrol

    ofacentral atomoffire,thepredominatingforcesbeingoxygenand

    carbon,thisunionproducesanotherchangeofpolarity,andtheybe

    comere-attractedtotheearth.Here,waterormoisturereceivesthem,

    andaspeciesofvegetableslimeisthephysical result.Whenthis

    vegetableproduct hasserveditspurposeanddecays,itsliberated

    atomsariseintheirspiral and, inturn,becomeattracted,or themselves

    attract,someoneormoreoftheatomsofairwithwhichtheyhavea

    natural affi nity. Thesameprocessofpolarizationisrepeated,with

    izedgermsbringforththenexthigherformofvegetablelife. Thus,

    astheagesroll on,fromthisoriginal formdevelopspecies,classes,

    andfamiliesofvegetation,andfromtheseevolve,throughthemedium

    ofwater,astill higherroundinthegamutofbeing;insect,reptile,

    animal,andlastly, MAN.Afteragesofdevelopment, wehaveManof

    today.

    Ithas beenwell saidbyaneminentOccultist,"manismost

    ignorantofthosethingswhicharemostmanifest."

    InsomedepartmentsofNaturethisistr ue,andprobablyinno

    other"manifested"department ofhisbeingisthist ruthmorestrik

    inglyapparentthaninthatwhichrelatestohissexual nature.Heis

    awarethatanimal natureisdividedintotwogreatclasses,maleand

    female,butheknowsalmostnothingoft hespiritual principleswhich

    underliethisphysical expressionofsex.Heisfullyawarethatthe

    unionofthetwoorganismsisnecessaryforthepurposeofprocreation,

    butheisfearfullyignorantofthoseinteriorprocesseswhichproduce

    theactual germsoflif e.Heismoreorlessacquaintedwiththefact

    bosomoftheInfinit eOne.Whatthesucceedingonesmaycontainwe

    cannot tell,butt hattheywill bearaperfectcorrespondencetothe

    sinceitpossessesnomeansofarrivingata trueknowledgeof itsvar

    ioussurroundings.Inthisstate,webeholdthespiritual atominit s

    primal conditionwhereinthepowerofGodhathjust createdit.It

    isthefirst spiritual Adam.Thevariousseriesofstatesthroughwhich

    thisdivineEgomustpenetrateinordertoevolveitssoul sphere,are

    thenecessarymeansbywhichtheinternal potentialitiesofsexmust

    beawakened.Whenthi stranspi res,t hedivi neEgobecomespregnant

    withthedual formsofitsownorganiclife,andthetwinsoulsare

    born,themaleandfemaleelementsofitsbeing,whicharerepresented

    aretheabsoluteexpressionofthemasculineandfemininerays of

    actionofitsforces.Thefeminineraymustlikewisecontainaportion

    ofthemasculinequalitiesfort hesamereason.Thesetwinsoulscon

    tainaportionof eachother. Theyconstitutethesunandmoon,so

    tosay,oftheEgo'screation,andwhenoncetheybecomedifferentiated

    theyareaseternal andimmortal astheEGOwhichcalledthem

    intoexistence.Theycanbeneitherabsorbednorannihilatedbytime

    noreternity.Theyconstitutethedivineideaoftheir deificparent,

    andas suchtheybecomethedivineexpressionofLoveandWisdom

    uponthisearth.

    NOTE;Thisstatementrequiressomeslightqualification.Wemeanthatnoforeign

    oroutsideinfluencecanabsorborannihilatethesexual qualitiesofthesoul.It

    isthereforetruethatthemasculineandfeminineattributesofthesoul cannotbe

    intomoreoutwardconditionsthantheparadisiacal state.Soinorder

    toattainthefull developmentofitsinternal attri butes,its ownsoul,
