The Knight’ s Page KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS In Service to One. In Service to All. Fall 2019 GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE Brothers and Sir Knights, We are now well into our 2019/2020 fraternal year and the summer season flew right past us. I hope that everyone had a great summer while vacationing or simply taking time to yourself, with loved ones, and with God. We have had a very busy summer, starting with the installation of officers in July with only a few changes and several successful fundraisers. A fundraiser was held at Isaac’s Fundraiser where we raised over $250 for our Seminarian Fund. We are providing a seminarian support to aide them while in school. In August, we enjoyed the fellowship of our fellow brothers and family members at our Annual Picnic. Thank you to Brother and Faithful Navigator Rich and his wife Tracy Kovaleski. Finishing the summer season, we were blessed to host a successful Soccer Shoot-Out, Chicken BBQ, and an Admission degree ceremony. I encourage you check the upcoming events calendar for the planned events as we have a very busy Winter season through the Holidays. If you have not had a chance to assist with a planned event, I challenge you to assist with all or part of an event. I feel that you will quickly learn what sets our council apart from other councils. We have a very strong and rich history where stories can be passed on by our fellow brothers that makes helping, worth every minute of your time. We continue to work in the parish with many events however we need your help to continue the presentation of gifts to the families at the baptismal ceremonies as well as providing lunches at the Lourdes House. Currently we have brothers and their wives involved in both program(s). If you would like to assist with either initiative please contact PGK Pete Fludovich (Baptisms) and PGK George Essip or Brother Richard Mowery (Lourdes House) to sign up to assist. In closing, you can see that we have had a very busy start of the fraternal year and we continue to learn about the new Faith in Action program(s). I thank all of you for the continued hard work, support, and guidance along the way! Please remember our deceased brothers and continue to honor our Veterans, enjoy food and family on Thanksgiving. Lastly, I wish everyone a very wonderful and blessed holiday season. GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

    Brothers and Sir Knights,

We are now well into our 2019/2020 fraternal year and the

summer season flew right past us. I hope that everyone had a

great summer while vacationing or simply taking time to

yourself, with loved ones, and with God. We have had a very

support to aide them while in school. In August, we enjoyed the

Annual Picnic. Thank you to Brother and Faithful Navigator

Rich and his wife Tracy Kovaleski. Finishing the summer

  • Is Your Family Protected?

A field agent like me who is lucky enough to be doing this great work for even a few years, undoubtedly has a personal story of the chaos and disorder that a devastated family stares at when there is a sudden loss. If our goal is to protect Catholic families from the near devastation that our Venerable founder faced, then I have to tell the story of how I can help my brother knights. The process of making sure one has adequate protection for the family is not painful; in fact, since we are brother knights serving brother knights, it isn’t just a time of helping to protect all that is important to a family; it’s also a shared experience that leads to an abiding friendship. There are two stories I’d like to share. The first is about a young boy named Julius. When Julius was seven years old his mother, Irene, who was thirty-seven, died of cancer. His father, Norman, had two teenage girls along with seven-year-old Julius to support and raise. The family was forced to rely on the help and generosity of friends and relatives because Irene died without life insurance. Norman had a three-hour commute to his job, but always supported his children’s activities. Julius excelled at sports, especially football, and his dad spent what little free time he had fostering Julius and his talent. Julius later admitted that he “was handed a life lesson early, growing up with one parent. It wasn’t the easiest life—my dad sacrificed a lot.”

Fast forward to Julius some thirty years later and he is married, has a wife and two children. He’s done quite well for himself both professionally and financially. He’s had a distinguished career and he has a considerable amount of life insurance to protect his family. Julius understands protection quite well after the early life he experienced. He understands the hardships of a family that loses a parent and what the children must go through. In his professional life he enjoyed considerable success because of those who protected him. For thirteen years he was protected in his career. You see, that protection for Julius came in the form of 300-pound offensive linemen…nobody called him Julius. His nickname was “Boomer”…Boomer Esiason—a four-time Pro Bowler, an NFL Most Valuable Player, and a Walter Peyton NFL Man of the Year. Most importantly, a husband to Cheryl and a father to Sydney and Gunnar.

“Life happens at the most unexpected of times, and life insurance is about protecting the future and the people you love,” Boomer says. “Remember, if something happens and you haven’t done the planning, the people you leave behind will feel the brunt of your mistakes.” That story comes from LifeHappens.org.

The other story is not similar at all. It’s about a member of the Knights of Columbus. As in Boomer’s story he passed away and left behind a spouse and several young children. There were no whispered worries at the funeral home. There was no GoFundMe page to raise money. There is no concern that the children would not go to college or that the wedding he promised his daughter wouldn’t take place. No, their home and future are secure thanks to the Knights of Columbus. Who was that knight? I don’t know; you don’t hear about those men. Because the council didn’t have to have a spaghetti dinner or pass the hat. But I assure you he was out there. But you’ll never know it…because he planned.

Let’s sit down and do some planning, protect your family, and put your mind at ease. Vivat Jesus! Jason Liller Field Agent

BAPTISM Help us celebrate the Choice of “LIFE”. Families of newly Baptized are given a rose, prayer scroll and a prayer

shawl. This is a FAMILY celebration. Wives are encouraged to join in with the presentation of the gifts. Thank you to the fellow Knights that have supported this ministry since its beginning several years ago, but additional Knights are required to keep it going. It's a very worthwhile endeavor, and is not only satisfying to the Knights and their wives who participate in the Baptisms, but are greatly appreciated by the families who are celebrating the baptisms of their children. For any questions or willingness to help in this very worthwhile ministry, please contact Brother Knight Pete Fludovich at 697-9678, or discuss at a regular meeting

  • COLUMBIETTE CORNER The installation of the Columbiette Officers for the current year took place on Sunday, July 7, after

the Knights installation.(photo bottom left) My first year as president of Our Lady of Queenship #4068

went by very fast and I am looking forward to my second year as president of this wonderful group of

ladies-the Columbiettes! During the fall of 2018, we began development of a Scholarship Program. It was

designed with the goal to support and encourage young women to deepen their spirituality as they continue their journey of faith and

to support them for success in their educational pursuits. The Scholarship Application was launched in early

2019 and culminated in the awarding of a $300 Scholarship to Audra White at Mass on May 26, 2019. (photo bottom right) Thank

you to the Scholarship Committee who met monthly to establish the criteria and application process: Lynn Racculia (chairman),

Kaitlin Bonner, Mary Brenner, Joan Lewis, Ginny Mizrahi, and Betty Vogt.

We were happy to have assisted the Knights with their many projects throughout the year: Chicken Barbecues, Pancake

Breakfasts, and the Spaghetti Dinner with MJ VasKorolis, Michelle Sempken, Pam Essip, and Jean Hileman always volunteering. The

Columbiettes were very successful in selling baked goods at several of these events. We were involved in many other activities

throughout the year such as the Parish Giving Tree Project, overseen by Mary LeClair and Patty Higgins, which will be starting again

soon! In the spring, we held a Diaper and Wipes Drive for Lourdeshouse and Morning Star Pregnancy Center and are planning one

again for this year. We were the guests of the American Heritage Girls at their Tea. Heidi Castle displayed several cups, saucers, and

tea pots.We enjoyed finger sandwiches, drinks, desserts, and good conversation as we helped them earn their Social Badge. In the

early summer, Columbiette, Jill Cohn, coordinated meals for Rachel's Vineyard as many Columbiettes stepped up to purchase food

items and/or make meals. Renee Campbell updated us on the needs of Lourdeshouse at our recent meeting.

I attended the Pennsylvania Columbiettes State Conference last April with Mary Brenner and Lynn Racculia; Kaitlin Bonner also

attended as State Advocate. The theme was "God's Work Our Hands...Sisters in Service to Others." Each president submitted a

report sharing their auxiliary's accomplishments. The many projects and hours of volunteerism showed that each auxiliary is a

blessing to their parish and wonderful example of Sisters in Service to Others. At our September Business Meeting we were very honored to receive, for the second year in a row, the Margaret Mary J. Mangan

Award, which was presented to us by our Supreme Director, Joellen Dodson.(below right) The award is named for Margaret Mary J.

Mangan who was one of our Founders and our First Supreme President. It recognizes all the good works performed by an auxiliary

each year, many of which are mentioned above. It was a great way to begin our new business year. Another reason to be excited was

the success of our Craft/ Bake Sale this October coordinated by Tracy Koveleski and Ann Miller. There were many handmade items

and baked goods, some of which were provided by parishioners. THANK YOU to our parishioners for their support and generosity!!

Membership opportunities are always available! If interested, please contact Membership Chairman, Kaitlin Bonner at 724-766-0974

  • Does Being a Knight Exclude My Family and Friends?

Everyone knows that the Knights of Columbus is a male fraternal organization, right? Does that mean that the activities of the

Knights are the exclusive domain of the men? Not at all! Families are very much a part of the Knights and we rely on their support and

help often. Many of the wives are members of the Columbiettes and support our Council through that organization. Through events

such as our annual family picnic, basketball free throw competition and the soccer shootout contest, we bring families together for the

camaraderie and fun. Hey, you don’t even have to be a member of our Parish. Pictured below is a photo of our Brother Carl Hocker

(on the right) painting benches at the St. Samuel Center, in Harrisburg, with the help of his non-Catholic brother-in-law. Many of our

wives step forward to take our programs a bit further than we are able to. Pictured below is a photo of Lynn Fry, wife of PGK (Past

Grand Knight) Russell Fry, instructing the ladies at the Lourdes House in creating “ugly quilts” to be sent to another organization to

make sleeping bags for the homeless. Council 4068 is providing lunches to the Lourdes House under our Helping Hands program

whereby we help those in need. Lynn saw an opportunity to make a difference in those ladies lives by teaching them a skill, which

    could also help their self-esteem.
