Grand Knight’s Comments

Brothers All, Happy and Healthy New Year to you and your Families. 2018 was a good year for this council. We made positive strides during the year, such as Star Council, finished The Unborn Memorial, Honor Guard for several events, honored all the Mothers with Roses for Mothers Day and special Prayer service for the Fathers, we collected over 1,000 pounds of food for the less fortunate, we honored the First Responders, Police and Fire Dept. with a dinner to show our appreciation, worked with the Special Olympics, and participated in the Coats for Kids program helped 72 kids keep warm this winter. This is just a sampling of what was done by our council. We have the wind at our backs and we need to keep up the great work. Star Council should be the standard for this council. At this point we are behind in our memberships as well as our new Insurance members. We need to pick up the pace and end this Fraternal year strong.

Thank You to Brother Gene and Jackie Mialki for putting together a wonderful Christmas Party all had a great time, Thank you all who helped and brought the delicious food. I would also like to thank our Ladies, they help us whenever we need and prepare great appetizers for us after each meeting.

For our new Brothers please get involved in a project. Ask the Brother that sponsored you for direction or any of the officers in the council.

One last Thank You, our Financial Secretary Gerry Frese will be retiring from the position this month. He has served us for the past three years and has done an outstanding job. His dedication to our council is second to none. He has been my right hand and I can't Thank him enough. Ed you have large shoes to fill but I'm sure your up to the job. Brothers when you see Gerry please Thank him.

Vivat Jesus, Joe D'Andrea GK

Spiritual Director Corner

Dear Brother Knights: New Year's resolutions will already have been made (and likely broken) by the time you read this message. I came across a simple 8 steps for spiritual growth that you might use for 2019.

1. Increase devotion to the Virgin Mary. Our Blessed Mother will lead us to her son. She has appeared supernaturally from Fatima to Tepeyac to Lourdes - obviously, Mary desires to help us. We need to listen to her pleas because the results of not listening to her have been manifest in widespread loss of faith, breakdown of marriages and rejection of basic morality.

2. Make time for spiritual reading. St. Athanasius (cir. 296 to May 2, 373), the "Father of Orthodoxy" and "Champion of Christ's Divinity" said, "You will not see anyone who is striving after his advancement who is not given to spiritual reading. And as to him who neglects it, the fact will soon be observed in his [lack of] progress." Consider setting aside a specific time (before leaving for work, at lunch or after dinner) to devote real time to learning about and knowing God.

3. Make good stewardship a lifestyle. Pope Francis calls us to greater justice in the way we use the good of this world. Give money to effective and proven Catholic charitable groups. If you are not recycling start today. Anything you can do to make this world better with your "time, talent and treasure" do it. Jesus warned that all His servants will be judged on how we use the graces He has given us.

4. Share your Catholic faith with others. In a world that has strayed so far away from God, Worthy Knights truly have their work cut out for them. God created you and me to dwell on this earth during this particular time in history. He has given to us a unique opportunity to serve His sheep especially those who are lost. At the conclusion of the Welcome Weekend Retreat, St. Clare's gives a Benedictine crucifix is given to each man and woman to wear around their neck as a reminder to them of the sacrifice Jesus made for humanity. It's not surprising that we all act a little differently in the grocery store and restaurant when we display it on our chest. A surprising number of people will comment about it. Others give an understanding smile of appreciation for this simple witness of faith.

5. Restore regular penances. When we live a penitential life year round, we live a Catholic way of life. The saints habitually performed a penance for themselves and for others. Alma giving, abstinence and fasting do not need to be limited to Lent. The Church law against eating meat on Friday (outside of Lent) was lifted by the United States Bishops but it was meant to be substituted with something else. You can decide what an appropriate sacrifice is suitable for you. Continued on Page 3

Financial Secretary Input

My brothers,

Just a reminder that I need your input for the Fraternal Activities Report by Jan 20. Use the form I sent you with your dues notice if possible. I realize the form is somewhat confusing. If you can’t figure it out, just give me numbers of hours in the major categories that best fit. Also, please send in your dues as soon as possible. Those of you who have ordered the new polo shirts, be patient. We have to order a minimum of 12 to get the discounted price. So far we have orders for only four. You are always free to order individually from Knightsgear or another source if you want your shirt sooner. Thanks for your support.

6. Go an extra day to Mass. Did I mention that abstaining from a day of golf constitutes a penance? It does. Give up anything and everything to get to Mass just one extra day each week. Ask any of your Brother Knights who go everyday to morning Mass. They are convinced the quickest and most certain way to holiness is frequent visits to the Sacrament of Confession and daily reception of the Holy Eucharist. Bar none, it works! It works by the sacramental graces Jesus imparts to us.

7. Pray the Rosary every day. Now, the Rosary is not a Marian devotion per se. The Rosary is a meditation on the life of Jesus Christ. I said in step 1 that Mary leads us to her Son. She cannot come up with anything new that her Son did not reveal while He was on earth. She will help us understand His teaching with better clarity. 8. Pick a new saint friend. Yes, I know that all Knights should ask Venerable Michael J. McGivney to intercede for them but I encourage you to read about the lives of the saints (Male or Female). Each saint lived a life that was unique. Each of them had to overcome personal flaws and sinfulness to become humble and then holy. There are thousands of canonized saints - one of them is bound to be your kindred spirit. https://www.catholic.org/saints/stindex.php put this web address into your electronic device and you will have a library filled with biographies of the saints. Vivat Jesus!
