October - Respect Life Month and Month of the Rosary By Elli Doll

October is Respect Life Month. This is a prayer that Mrs. Duex, the middle school math teacher, starts each class with:

Lord,

Please look down from Heaven above

and touch these special children with love.

Protect and guide these little ones

until each and every day is done.

Remind us often that it’s true;

these little lives are gifts from you.

Miracles you’ve sent our way.

Lord, bless these little children today.  Also, in October we celebrate the Month of the Rosary. The Rosary is a very special prayer directed toward the intercession of Our Mother Mary. We pray to Mary in a special way because she is Jesus’s mother, and ours also. During October, you are encouraged to try to pray the Rosary a little bit more.

SCCS Volleyball Teams

By Raegan Pearson

VOLLEYBALL   This week we have the 5th, 6th, and the 7th and 8th grade teams facing many different teams in their volleyball playoffs. The 7th and 8th grade team has won all of their games except for one. It was very close. The 7th and 8th grade teams have also won their first round of playoffs and play again at St. Ambrose on Friday, October the 26th at 7:30. We would love if you could come and show your support! If they win Friday, they play on Sunday. The 5th and 6th grade teams have sadly lost their first games of their playoffs. Also, if they win on Friday they will go to the championship game on Sunday. If you have any questions you can ask any player on the volleyball team: Raegan Pearson (me), Addie Raney, Alli Hauser, Edy McCurrie, Elizabeth Voss, Bridget Lisle, Shayla Glaser, and Payton Mackley. Please pray for our volleyball team that they represent our school well and do their best. A special thanks to Ms. Gallagher, who has helped coordinate everything for the volleyball teams. Ms. Gallagher has done a lot to help our teams by letting us know when games are, when we are allowed to use the gym and helping us sign-up. She has definitely done a big part for all of the teams that have played. We also want to give a special thanks to ALL of the volleyball coaches who had helped the teams be the best that they could be. Last but not least, let's give a special thanks to the players who have proudly represented our school and have shown great sportsmanship and leadership. Thanks to you all for supporting our volleyball teams by reading this and maybe by going to the games! Thank you all for reading.

Issue One Star Teacher - Mrs. Krebsbach

Interview Conducted by Katie Schlegel

Katie: Is this your first teaching job? If not, where have you taught before this? Mrs. Krebsbach: This is not my first teaching job. I taught at Rivendell Elementary in Fort Collins, Colorado. I taught 4th and 5th grades there. I did teach 6th grade for one year also.   Q: What methods of learning do you use with your students? A: I use all kinds of methods of learning with my students. Being that it is kindergarten, we move around a lot and are very hands on with our learning. The students need to be able to be creative and express their views and ideas verbally as well.  Q: What has been your favorite moment in the kindergarten classroom so far this year? A: My favorite moment...hmmm I really loved experiencing their first time at Adoration with them in the beginning of the school year. Seeing the their sketches of Jesus in their Adoration Journals was very touching. I also love to see their ability to read and write grow.  Q: What's your favorite thing about SCCS? A: I love everything about SCCS! The staff, the students, the community of parents. I love that students learn to live so fully in their Faith.  Q: What made you want to become a teacher? A: I wanted to become a teacher because I have always loved working with kids! Seeing the world through the eyes of children always reminds me of all the good in our world!

Math Brain Teasers

By Mrs. Deux Photo: https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2016/03/05/20/00/algebra-1238600__340.jpg

One of my favorite books is Math for Smarty Pants. Here is an excerpt from the beginning of the book. “You may be wondering if you qualify as a mathematical smarty pants. You’re not alone. Lots of kids wonder about that. What’s important for you to realize is that mathematical smarty pants pants come in may types. The truth is this: You’re not born being a smarty pants - it is something you learn. The real trick to being a math smarty pants is believing that math makes sense or can make sense if you put your mind to it. ...Some people may think that being good in math is just getting the right answers to problems: they think you either know how or you don’t. The first step in getting good in math is believing there is a difference between not being able to out a problem and not figuring it out right away. When a problem seems hard, instead of thinking ‘I can’t do this,’ think ‘I just haven’t solved this problem yet.’ You don’t need to rush in mathematics.” So, let’s make you a math smarty pants. Let’s start practicing some puzzles to see if you can figure them out. Remember, do not rush in mathematics. The success is persevering until you figure the answer out. Some of these are tricky. Read the questions carefully. The answers are at the end of the issue.

1. How much dirt can be removed from a hole that is 4 feet by 9 feet by 3 feet? 2. Where can you bury a person living west of the Mississippi? 3. What is the answer to 20 divided by ½ plus 10? 4. If you take 2 apples from 3 apples, how many apples do you have? 5. A farmer had 17 sheep. All but 9 died. How many sheep does the farmer have left?

 Video Game Review - Subnautica

By Anonymous

Subnautica is a game where you explore the ocean. The game starts out when your                             spaceship (the aurora) crashes on a alien island (4546b). This game takes place in                           the 22nd century, when the Earth starts to takeover other planets. The aurora was                           sent out to construct a phase gate in 4546b’s system. The aurora was shot down by                               an energy pulse and crash lands onto 4546b. The planet was inhabited by an alien                             race, which you find out later in the game. You have to survive by finding food in the                                   ocean and other things to survive. You have to be careful of what is in the ocean                                 though. You think you’re the only one trying to survive? There are other things that are                               even more desperate than you. Some people call this game an “underwater                       minecraft,” but with way better graphics. This game is very fun if you’re looking for a                               game that has suspense and exploring.

 The Green-ish Ninja

By Noah D’Souza

Once upon a time there was a young man eating breakfast. His name was Jose. He enjoyed his frosted flakes and was putting his bowl in the dishwasher when something went ”KABLOOEY!”. People were screaming, yelling, and calling 1-800-ASK-GARY. “Oh joy. A bomb has been set off. Sounds like a job for,” danananana, “The Green-ish Ninja!” Jose pressed a button on his book shelf and jumped out the window and his armour appeared, covering him. When he landed, a huge dust cloud appeared, making a few good men and women faint. He used his super speed (Did I mention he has super speed?) and found the people of injustice. “You are not supposed to do that.” Jose said like people did that everyday. “My bad.” said the man of injustice after he punched our hero right in the gut. “Ouch!” said Jose, lying face down on the road.

“Computer?” Jose inquired. “Yes?” “Who are these people? They have the audacity to punch the Green-ish Ninja!” “They are repugnant sir. Scanning now. They are two shoplifters that were

stealing a bag of Doritos and accidentally set off a bomb.” “Well I guess I will have to send him a gift… in prison.”

The Green-ish Ninja took off with his super speed and completely demolished a school bus. “My bad. Didn’t mean to hit you. I just ran in to you. That was a little hard. My bad. Sorry.” He continued to run, barely missing a pedestrian that yelled “Hey! I'm walking here!” When Jose finally caught up to them he said “Take that you do-badder.” (Don’t mind his language - he is from Chile.) And he punched the man just before he ran into STOP sign. That really is painful, trust me. That slowed Jose down even more so he took a shortcut right through a movie theater that was showing “The Hunger Games” and “Thor” and “Barbie’s Adventure to Save her Friends” all at the same time! A few people tried to throw popcorn at him, but he ate it catching it in the air with his

mouth as he had spent so much time practicing as a kid. He caught like 30 pieces! It should be a new world record - most popcorn caught in the mouth while running. Jose caught up to them again but this time he popped all their tires. The car was a really weird colored blue Prius. The man said “C’mon man!”

The dude was so mad he walked out of the car and tried to punch Jose, but missed and knocked out an old lady’s false teeth. Now the old lady was mad and knocked the assassin out with her cane! The green-ish ninja thanked the old lady and bought her a churro. He brought the old lady to her house only to find out she owned a whole neighborhood! He asked her who she used for insurance and the lady said, “Jake from state farm, who else?!”

After the big incident Jose went to Target to get mac and cheese, whole wheat bread , and a gift for the prisoners in jail. As Jose arrived at the jail he saw a big hole in the roof. “I wonder what did that?” said Jose. He walked in with the gift bag and found the place in complete pandamonium! “Where do I drop off the gift bag?!” Jose cried. Suddenly Jose thought about why the cops were running around in circles. Then Jose smacked his head and said “I shall help thee” (Again please mind Jose’s language, he is from Chile.) He ran uber fast and surprisingly passed an uber. He ran across the golden gate bridge and photobombed a picture by dabbing incredibly hard in a family's photo. Then he ran straight into his small warehouse and changed. 10 seconds late, he zoomed back across the bridge and for the second consecutive time he photobombed another picture. He ran up and down every single street in San Francisco. The Green-ish Ninja finally saw the blue Prius that belonged to the citizens of evil. “Aha, I have you now!” The Green-ninja cried. “This guy again. I am not letting him pop my tires and if he does, I will punch him in the face,” said the driver, jinxing it. The Green-ish ninja flew through the window like a superhero. He slapped the driver about sixty or seventy times so the driver couldn’t slap him then he kicked the other dudes really hard and did a John Cena move on the last guy. Then the Green-ish Ninja whipped out his lego string thingie and wrapped it around the villains while humming to his FAVOURITE song on the radio. He dragged them all the way to Florida and gave them to a S.W.A.T unit. He ran as fast as he could back to San Francisco to get back to his house where Lucas (The Blue-ish Ninja) was waiting for him to play Fortnite. A

new halo skin had just dropped and Jose bought it. He won 16 games straight! It was awesome. He left in his Masseradi the next day because they had a sleepover. The next day was chili Monday. Jose did the usual. Ate breakfast, went to the gym, did a few dabs, slapped a dude that was being annoying, and drove home in his B.M.W I.8. The car had a really cool system thing and it allowed Jose to sit back and relax because the car had auto pilate. After he parked he left his car went up to his apartment. He chilled in his apartment watching Iron man 3. (Jose didn’t understand why they called him “Iron Man” when his suit was not even made of iron.)

Well dear reader, this is how our story ends. Yes it may be a little cringey, but as William Shakespeare said, “ Thou‘est evr’y story must have ze so called cringe momento.” (I actually don’t know if he said that but...) Thank you Shakespeare. G.K. Chesterton

By Elli Doll Source: Ahlquist, Dale. Common Sense 101. San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 2006.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton May 29, 1874 - June 14, 1936

● Gilbert Keith Chesterton was known for his absentmindness. For example, he would often miss his trains, or catch the wrong one.

● Chesterton was a very humble man. For example, when he was asked at one of his speeches to speak louder, he replied, “Good sister, don’t worry. You aren’t missing a thing!”

● G.K. Chesterton was the founder of Chesterton Academy, a Catholic high school with many locations across the U.S. and even some in other parts of the world. There is even a campus located in Medina and East St. Paul, Minnesota. At Chesterton Academy, they provide a classical education that focuses on logic and philosophy.

● He was also known for always carrying his sword stick, gun, and Texas knife. He said he had the sword stick because he “liked things that came to a point”. Chesterton explained that he bought the gun his wedding day “to defend his bride”. He slept with the knife under his pillow, usually forgetting it there. His wife always had to remember it at hotels.

● Quotes: ○ “If a man may not laugh at his own jokes, at whose jokes may he laugh?

May not an architect pray in his own cathedral?” ○ When asked “What are your thoughts on Hell?”, replied “I regard it as a

thing to be avoided.” ○ When asked, “If you were stranded on a desert island with only one

book, what book would you want it to be?”, replied “Thomas’ Guide to Practical Shipbuilding”.

○ “Pride does not go before a fall. Pride is a fall!”

Movie Review - First Man

By Anonymous

Directed by: Damien Chazelle Starring: Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, Ciaran                       Hinds, and Christopher Abbott Running time: 141 minutes   Plot: First Man was based off of the true story of the first person who landed on the                                   moon. This man was Neil Armstrong, the captain of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. His                           team was Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. The movie was about the trial and error                             that Neil, his team, and NASA had to go through. It was also about Neil’s personal life                                 and his family. He was married to Janet Shearon at the time and they had two sons                                 named Mark and Eric Armstrong. He did have a little girl named Karen, but she died at                                 4 years old due to a brain tumor. But even though she died, Neil still persevered                               through his astronaut training and eventually made it to the moon. But he never forgot                             his precious Karen.  Review: I thought this movie was good. It had many suspenseful moments and kept                           you on the edge of your seat. But I will say that it became sad at some parts. But it

really put you in the shoes of Neil. I would recommend this movie to anyone that                               enjoys action and drama movies. Thank you for listening :)
