The JUWO Evolved SmartWallTM Thermoplan Clayblock System

Evolved Evolution Screw-piled Flat Raft and Screw-piled Insulated Flat Raft Systems

Evolved Evolution Screw-piled foundation flat raft slab systems have been developed to provide an energy-efficient

way of providing a foundation system that can work in all types of ground conditions throughout the UK without the

need for expensive waste soil having to be removed from site as in the more traditional trench foundation system

widely used in the market. Therefore, a more efficient, cost-saving and concrete-saving option has been the goal for

use with the JUWO Evolved SmartWall™ monolith block system.

The Evolved Evolution Screw-piled foundation flat raft slab system can be provided in a non-insulated format, where

the ground floor insulation is placed above the foundation slab or, in an insulated structural foundation floor slab,

where the insulation is formed as part of the foundation, under the slab. Both systems work on the principal of

installing a metal screw-pile, manufactured off-site and laid into a prearranged grid patten, without the need for a

piling matt to be used. This is configured to the agreed structural requirements provided either by our own in-house

structural engineers or by the client structural engineers.

To eliminate the need for edge beams and intermediate

supporting beams, the Screw-pile would have a special cap

connecting plate welded to the top of Screw-pile, designed for

the size and area of support needed.

The pile cap is then fixed through to the reinforcement by means of an anchor, to connect to the reinforcement that

is designed to meet the structural requirements.

Once the surface topsoil is removed; which is all that is needed, and reduces the cost of removing waste soil offsite;

the pile positions are simply marked out on the ground, so removing the expense of a piling matt.

A piling mat is a temporary working platform designed to provide a reliable and stable surface on which piling rigs

and other ground treatment machinery can operate. Piling mats are typically constructed using well-graded stone,

clean-crushed concrete, or crushed hard rock. This can still be used in especially difficult ground conditions.

The Screw-piles are then driven into

the ground, by a simple hydraulic

machine, to the required depth,

which has been determined by

testing during the geotechnical site-

investigation. Typically, for a normal

two storey house, piles are driven

to about 3.5 – 5 metres in length,

but this depends greatly on ground

conditions.

When using the Evolved Evolution Screw-pile Flat

Raft system where the insulation is going above the

slab, a sacrificial steel edge support product is used

as a permanent shuttering to support the concrete in

place until it has set.

Rebar and mesh details are all designed to the project-specific requirements.

When adopting the option to place the insulation below the slab, the type of edge detailing and insulation

requirements can be met using a combination of systems. A simple Screw-pile passing through the high-density

expanded polystyrene edge and raft insulation may be used, or an integral reinforced concrete edge beam to support

external and internal walls, partitions, or columns, as necessary to meet the design specification.

Where the design calls for an edge or internal beam, it is possible to thermally separate them by using a layer of

insulation between the slab and lower beam. The gap between the two can be reinforced by intermittent concrete

stubs.

In both cases, piling systems can realise major savings in excavation and cost, and in the environmental impact and

expense associated with disposal of waste soil from site.

Where the Evolved Evolution Screw-piled Insulated Standard Systems are used, there is almost no waste soil

displaced in the piling operation and no requirement for piling mats, which would otherwise increase the installation

cost.

Options to reduce the concrete volume used in all the slab systems exists. Void-formers, cast into the concrete slab,

can save over 5-6 m3 of concrete on an average foundation system.

Evolved Evolution Screw-piled Flat Raft and Screw-piled Insulated Flat Raft Systems

The Evolved Evolution Screw-piled Non insulated or Screw-piled Insulated Standard System, dependant on the

superstructure used (but based on the JUWO Evolved SmartWall™ Monolithic system) will require a DPC or DPM for

the raft. Therefore, we have developed a method able to meet current Building Regulations and meeting Warranty

and Building Control requirements.

The perimeter edge of the slab is treated with a primer to enable the MB2K DPC to be applied at a minimum of

150mm wider than the block used. The JUWO Evolved SmartWall™ block is then laid onto levelling bed of mortar

using the levelling tool method or by laying mortar by hand and self-levelling the block insitu.

When the wall is built, the outside of the wall above and below the DPM line is treated with the same MB2K materials,

and a strip of VF waterproof fibre roll is placed over the joint at the DPC line and over rendered with a further layer of

MB2K material. This can then be over rendered or finished with whatever your surface finish is to be, above and below

the DPC.

A standard DPC can be used in replacement to the MB2K system subject to Building Control approval.
