Innovative gearbox design

Propeller designed 900 rpm is reachable

Lower drag coefficient with the use of a shroud

Less power loss due to turbulence

8

Unefficient fin designFins were too fragile

and broke easily

Page 9: The journey begins.... The team Archimede IV 2007 results Submarine pros/cons Potential amelioration projects Fabrication of the submarine -Hull design

Hull design verified using finite element methods. The hull not being symmetrical ameliorations are possible.

Page 12: The journey begins.... The team Archimede IV 2007 results Submarine pros/cons Potential amelioration projects Fabrication of the submarine -Hull design

12

Stronger fins, less breakable

Bigger bonding area to the submarine

Longer fins on submarine total length positively affecting submarine stability because of the fixed front part

Page 13: The journey begins.... The team Archimede IV 2007 results Submarine pros/cons Potential amelioration projects Fabrication of the submarine -Hull design

13

Smaller directional fins to increase control and steering of the submarine

More efficient movement of the fin directly affecting submarine stability in water

15

2007 nose was entirely fiberglass and very fragile

Page 16: The journey begins.... The team Archimede IV 2007 results Submarine pros/cons Potential amelioration projects Fabrication of the submarine -Hull design

16

2009 nose design has not changed

Nose failure in previous competitions encouraged us to reinforce it

Kevlar coated for 2009 which increases total mechanical resistance

Hull made out of a layer of corecell between two layers of fiberglass

Hull counterpart made out of foam

Mold then made out of that counterpart

18

Shroud made of fiberglass

Designed in accordance with the propeller and submarine

Gives better and more concentrated flow of water
