each year, most medical tourists are leaving their countries in search of quality treatments, diagnoses and surgeries at reasonable prices. In 2007 alone, there were 750,000 medical tourist that traveled from the U.S. to foreign countries, and by the end of this year, this figure is estimated to be around 7 million foreign patients. Costa Rica is a country that is emerging in global medicine and according to The Chamber of Exporters of Costa Rica (CADEXCO) Costa Rica receives between 15,000 and 20,000 health tourists annually. This activity generates, $560 million a year for Costa Rica. Because of this situation, and their increasing projections for the years to come, Costa Rica has proactively worked to attract more international patients.

At Centro Fecundar Costa Rica - Panama, founded by doctors Ariel Pérez and Raúl Berbey we are cer-tified specialists in Reproductive Medicine, properly recognized by the American Society of Reproduc-tive Medicine, Costa Rica’s Medi-cal College and Panama’s Heath Ministry. We have almost ten years of experience during which, when results from both countries are put together, we have brought over 2000 babies to the world.
In our offices in San José, Costa Rica, located at Hospital CIMA San José and Avenida Escazú, we con-duct Artificial Insemination ($300) and Gamete Transfer (GIFT) ($2100) respectively, and in our office in Paitilla Medical Center in Panama City, we also treat cases of In Vitro Fertilization with Intracito-plasmic Sperm Injection ($2800).
Our In Vitro Fertilization Pro-gram is the biggest and most suc-cessful in Central America, with 507 cycles (cases) in the year 2009, with patients hailing mainly from Panama, Costa Rica and Florida (USA), however we have also re-ceived some cases from Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala,
Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Antilles and Venezuela. The 278 pregnancies obtained just in 2009, set our global rate at 55%.
Our laboratories of Assisted Reproductive Technology are equipped in compliance with the guidelines of the American Soci-ety of Reproductive Medicine with Sperm Banks and Frozen Ovum in both countries. In Costa Rica we conduct intrauterine insemination and GIFT procedures with extreme precision resulting in 9 out of 10 patients get pregnant within the first four attempts.
Knowing full well that we live in an ever-changing world, we apply the most recent innovations in the field of reproductive medicine (Su-per ICSI, cytoplasmic transfer, la-ser embryo hatching, embryo glue, blastocyst and intrauterine insemi-nation with gradients among oth-ers) and we include them within the standard services in order to mini-mize costs and improve results. sin embargo también hemos recibido algunos casos de México, El Salva-dor, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicara-gua, República Dominicana, Antil-las y Venezuela. Los 278 embarazos obtenidos en sólo el 2009, cerraron nuestra tasa global en 55%.
Nuestros Laboratorios de Re-producción Asistida están equipa-dos bajo las normas de la Sociedad Americana de Medicina Reproduc-tiva con Bancos de semen y óvulos congelados, en ambos países. En Costa Rica realizamos casos de In-seminación Intrauterina y de GIFT con extremada precisión por lo que de cada 10 pacientes que acuden a nosotros 9 logran embarazo dentro de los primeros 4 intentos.

We provide bedside to bedside service, ensuring quality and continuity of care during the transport. The Lifeguard team members take extreme pride in making each transport as smooth & uneventful as possible.
Lifeguard Transportation Service, Inc. began its full service ground operations in New Orleans, Louisiana in November of 1998 and in January of 2001 Lifeguard added its second full service transport company in Birmingham, Alabama. In January 2002 Lifeguard proudly welcomed its third ground operation to Pensacola, Florida. In February 2003 Lifeguard greeted a fourth service in Dallas, Texas and we proudly opened our 5th ground ambulance operation in Nashville, Tennessee in April 2004. In January 2006 we acquired Medic One Ambulance Service which had operations in Nashville, Knoxville & Chattanooga, Tennessee & assimilate their operations into the Lifeguard team. 2006 also saw the opening of Lifeguard’s newest operation in Atlanta, Georgia; these 2006 additions almost doubled Lifeguards operation site size, employees and customer base. In 2008, Lifeguard began operations in Mobile, AL. At every location Lifeguard continually strives to give our clients exceptional customer service partnered with compassionate patient care.
Together the Lifeguard companies operate six aircraft and one hundred twenty-five ground vehicles. Our team members consist of over 700+ medical & non-medical personnel - pilots, aircraft & vehicle mechanics, EMT’s,
Paramedics, Respiratory Therapists, Registered Nurses, Physicians, and Administration & Billing Staff.
Lifeguard began its operations in Costa Rica on August of 2008 and has grown into a reputable and reliable company. We operate six urgent care clinics in preferred tourist destinations across the Pacific coast. Our aim is to provide tourists and residents of Costa Rica with highly professional medical care and standards in many of the beautiful tourist areas.
Our clinics are staffed with bi or multi-lingual physicians, paramedics, ambulance drivers and administrative clerks. In the event of a major emergency, patients are transferred to specialized medical facilities via ambulance units located at our urgent care clinics. Lifeguard also provides on-site clinics for various job sites, as well as providing physician services to specific hotels and resorts.
We operate a total of 10 ambulances which are situated at our clinics, projects, and hotels. We also provide air transports within Costa Rica from our clinic locations and can transfer them to specialized hospitals in San Jose.

The fleet of aircraft available to Lifeguard includes a Bell 212, Jetstream 32, and Cessna Grand Caravan.

Lifeguard Air Ambulance, Inc. is a medical ambulance service in operation since 1980, providing transport for critical & non-critical care patients. Lifeguard Air Am-bulance, Inc. saw a 56% increase in its customer base in the first year of private ownership and bought its first aircraft. Over the next 20 years, Lifeguard has continued this positive growth with a small fleet of aircraft that in-clude a Cessna 421, two King Air aircraft, two Lear Jets and a Citation Bravo Jet.

The best place to smile in Costa Rica
Immediate load implants, known as “one stage implants” have become very popular as an option for those who want a rapid solution for missing dental pieces.
These titatnium posts are placed with the respective permanent tooth in one stage, wich means that in one week (2 visits), you can leave the dentist’s office with an im-plant and your definitive por-celain crown.
But this is not all the truth about this “one stage im-plants”, because they are not a solution for everyone.
Immediate load implants, in fact, are the same implants specialists use in two stage procedures- when patients has to get the implants and one temporary tooth in one visit and 4 to 5 months later, return to the dental center to get the definitive crown-.
The only difference be-tween “two stage implants” and “one day implants” re-lies on the patient, because
depends on his or hers bone quality, the implant retention and the healing capacity of each person.
“The only way to know if the patient fill the requirements is in the exact moment of the implant placement”, says Dr. Andrés Fernández, Oral and Maxillofacial specialist and partner of Dental Cosmetics Costa Rica (DCCR), which means that it is impossible to know previously to the sur-gery if the patient is a candi-date for immediate load im-plants or not.
“It would be wonderful if we could offer everyone an im-mediate load implant option, but this is not being honest with them, because you cannot know until you have seen the bone height and quality and also depends on the initial stability of the implant when
placed”, adds Dr. Alejandro Mora, Oral Rehabilitation spe-cialist and partner of DCCR.
“Also the more implants you are going to have con-nected to each other, the better predictability for immediate load”, explains Dr. Mora.
“For example, if you get an individual implant it would have a lower success rate than two or three implants that will be connected together”, con-cludes.

• Clinica Biblica supports the Do it Center FoundationOne of the most treasured skills we human
beings have is the ability to move on our own. So easy, so automatic, so routine, that many times we forget that for an important segment of the population, making such motions are not as easy as it appears. It is estimated that in Costa Rica 4 percent of the total population (a little less than 200,000 Costa Ricans) are unable to walk and it is estimated that half of them cannot afford a wheelchair. Fortunately, there’s a foundation that has made it possible for thousands of Costa Ricans to receive mobility free of charge. The Do It Center Foundation and Hospital Clinica Biblica have, in the past three years, provided 8,000 wheelchairs to people in need directly or by delivering them to rest homes, hospitals, and other institutions. Foundation Director, Jerad Portner, says the foundation will donate another 3,300 wheelchairs this year. The Do it Center Foundation was founded 6 years ago and has become a great help for thousands of low-income families who need wheelchairs but haven’t been able to obtain them through the Costa Rican Social Security System (CCSS) or due to lack of funds to buy them. According to John Scheman, president of the foundation’s board of directors, ”seeing the expression of happiness on the faces of people who receive such donations is impossible to erase from one’s mind.”
• Future of Clinica Biblica in GuanacasteClinica Biblica has announced their new hospital in Guanacaste. The hospital is located within
the 2,350 acre Sun Ranch development (www.sunranchcostarica.com). According to Mauricio Rivera, Project Director, the development will encompass assisted living and long-term care facilities, a medical hotel, a championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., as well as commercial and residential. The project is located 2 kilometers North of the Daniel Oduber International airport. The hospital will be built on 37 acres, which was donated by businessman and philanthropist Jimmy Gesling along with the Do It Center Foundation.
According to John Scheman, Director of Development for the hospital in Guanacaste, the complex will be built in four stages and consists of four towers. The medical towers are 3 stories tall and construction of the first stage will begin in 2011. The first building measures 37,674 ft2 which includes a diagnostic center, pharmacy, emergency room, observation, stabilization area, laboratory and imaging center. The second and third floors will house 48 medical offices that will be sold to doctors and will be available for purchase early next year. Towers 2 and 3 will have a total area of 96,875 ft2, including 50 in-patient suites, operating rooms, pre and post operative recovery, maternity ward, delivery rooms, and intensive care among others.The last stage will be a three story tower measuring 37,674 ft2 which will have 72 doctors’ offices and will focus on specialty medical services such as plastic surgery, geriatrics, orthodontics, and snake bites. • HistoryIn 1921 evangelical missionaries Harry and Susan Strachan arrived in Costa Rica from
Argentina with the purpose of sharing the Gospel and helping the poor. The couple found a complex and difficult health situation, where children were the most seriously affected. They established a small clinic to offer free medical services under the Latin America Mission. It was first a pediatric center to attend to sick, malnourished and abandoned children. Soon after, however, they recognized the need to offer other services. The Strachans took on the challenge and built a maternity ward, a surgical unit and a nursing school to fulfill those and many other needs that they saw.
That’s how the Hospital Clinica Biblica began and since it’s inception, has been operating as a non-profit organization. Its mission is to use the economic resources generated by the hospital to give back to the community through social programs, charities and donations to benefit those in need. 33% of profits are used to administrate the hospital, 33% for growth, and 33% are given back to the community.
