W elcome to the second edition of the SHAW Journal for 2012. It is with great excitement that we bring

to your attention over $30 million in new properties acquired in the past 30 days. Our elation is drawn from the need to replenish our inventory after a strong start to the year in not only physical property sales but also how this directly and positively affects the top end real estate market that has been, to take an optimistic view, plateauing over the preceding three years.

The significant mover is the upper end with a large push coming from International buyers that has already resulted in unprecedented sales figures in our local market. “Villa Amalfi”, a unique and opulent grand mansion we brought to you in our last edition, marketed for $9 million has now sold, fetching more than all local interest had indicated.

The SHAW point of difference has always been employing a limitless approach to all we do, whether it be establishing successful affiliate relationships with like minded businesses to enhance both our client base

and networking opportunities or materializing cutting edge, bespoke marketing campaigns for the properties we represent to procure the most suiting buyer who ultimately appreciates what has gone into the creation of the home and more often than not facilitates the optimum result.

We thank you for taking the time to peruse the latest instalment of the SHAW Journal and trust you’ll enjoy not only the marvellous properties but the insightful editorial pieces compiled by our closest affiliates. Wishing you safety and prosperity in the coming months, we look forward to bringing more unique properties and luxury lifestyle insights to you in our next edition.

Yours sincerely,

Lewis ShawManaging Director – SHAW Group

2012 INTERNATIONAL PROPERTY AWARDSThe judge's have deliberated and the verdict is in ...SHAW Group impress on the world stage

The world’s most prestigious property competition, The International Property

Awards, held this year on April 26 and 27 at the JW Marriott Hotel in Kuala Lumpur received a record number of entries from companies representing 17 different countries for the Asia Pacific region.

Throughout the 18 year history of the awards, the primary focus has always been to seek out the best real estate professionals across the globe. The judging panel consists of approximately 70 professionals from around the globe including Australian local Fiona Nixon, chairman of the Australian Institute of Architects. The judging process is carried out over a number of weeks as all judges thoroughly assess all invited entrants proposals and short list the very finest submissions by each country within the region.

Brisbane based, SHAW Property Group have been successful in achieving the prestigious 5 Star Highly Commended rating for the International Property Awards Asia Pacific region categories of 'Best Real Estate Agency' and 'Best Real Estate Agency Marketing'. A testament to the unique approach employed by the company since it’s inception in 2010. It’s directors Lewis Shaw and Jacksen Hayes set out to redefine the way luxury property

services are handled by starting with the people behind the properties they service rather than the superficial bricks and mortar dominating their now quarter billion dollar portfolio. “Establishing strong affiliate relationships with like minded, commensurate brands and industries to ours we were able to utilize the power of leverage to enhance not only our own client database but grow a wide network underpinned by the inherent trust associated with dealing with a referred business or professional.” Said Lewis Shaw, Managing Director of SHAW Property Group. This unique and progressive approach has proven to pay dividends for the group having yielded multi million dollar sales results from direct client referrals and establishing a satellite sales office in Hong Kong after burgeoning international enquiry and potential migrants have become a crucial element of the continued success of the company.

Most recently the SHAW Group have established their own luxury lifestyle and property publication, the SHAW Journal, aimed at reaching a specific group of high net worth and aspirational, like minded target markets to promote their core business of luxury property sales alongside the businesses and practices

of their closest affiliates. “A publication of this quality, on this scale is unheard of in the real estate industry and shows how far ahead of the competition the SHAW Group are with their foresight and selfless desire to enhance their reach and ability to service their clientele at a level never before experienced in the Queensland market” said Thompson Conway, Editor of the newly created SHAW Journal.

Stuart Shield, president of the International Property Awards said “We were amazed and delighted by the enormous number of entries received for the Asia pacific region this year. The standard was also extremely high. Any company to win one of these awards has shown exceptional levels of professionalism and competence in their respective field.”

Upon receiving the awards Lewis Shaw said, “We are very humbled to be nominated and to have had the incredible fortune of winning both our nominated categories on such a large international scale. Winning these awards provides us an unrivalled platform to progress

from and continue to create customized campaigns for our clientele and in turn, achieve unparalleled results. It is incredibly reassuring to be recognized on such a prestigious level and enhance both our brand presence and more importantly, allow a wider audience to discover the difference available in an industry consumed with complacency and tiring methodologies.”

Later this year, SHAW Property Group,

along with other top scoring winners from the Asia Pacific Property Awards will compete against other winning companies form Europe, Africa, the Americas and Arabia to find the ultimate World’s best in the categories of 'Best Real Estate Agency' and 'Best Real Estate Agency Marketing'.

The Chinese geomancy is disciplined for furniture arrangement in the home. Caroline de Lore reports on just how to spot the right product to suit the task

So many people are put off when they read or hear the words ‘Feng Shui’. It evokes

thoughts of mysticism and superstition and gets a few eyes rolls and brush-offs because of the misunderstanding around the phrase. When first introduced to the concept of Feng Shui, most people already have a preconceived notion about what they think it means.

The information and advice available on Feng Shui websites and in books is always so conflicting and overloaded with superstition. True knowledge of this the sacred and ancient Chinese art is traditionally passed down from a Feng Shui master to their student. After being

ancient Chinese sages came to believe that Qi (or Chi) is affected by the flow of wind and water. Feng Shui focuses on the energy of the human body and how environmental patterns influence us. Feng Shui is about energy.

So how do you harness the benefits of Feng Shui when selling a home or when you have purchased a new one? It’s about looking at a space holistically and applying principles to increase positive energy and correct negative energy one step at a time.

Applying Feng Shui when selling a home can greatly increase the chances of a sale. When you work to increase the positive energy flow of a space by clearing clutter, creating clean organized spaces and

enlightened with this knowledge, it is fair to say that for all the misunderstanding, Feng Shui is a simple and easy to understand concept when you have the facts.

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese wisdom that serves to improve all aspects of your life and create positive energy influences in your environment. It works on the principle that “like attracts like” where a space with clear, positive energy is conducive to good health, good relationships and peace of mind. It is about our relationship with the surrounding environment and affecting it using simple changes and common sense.

'Feng' means wind and 'Shui' means water. After keen observation of nature,

and living in their space. Further Feng Shui analysis and balance can be achieved through a qualified Feng Shui professional.

In addition to making corrections to the space, furniture design is one area of interiors that can be influenced by Feng Shui. Brisbane’s Design Initial Director Stephen Tam is all too familiar with this concept. He works closely with furniture manufacturers in China whose furniture is carefully constructed to exacting Feng Shui measurements. The furniture is measured using auspicious or ‘lucky’ numbers to ensure the wealth and happiness of their future owners. Measurements exclude the number 4 (four) as its pronunciation is

ensuring a harmonious, balanced aesthetic, potential clients are influenced by both the changes and the intention behind them.

After purchasing a new home, set the intention to clear it of the previous owner’s energy and bring in your own positive energy. Open all windows and doors to let in lots of fresh air and maintain a clean, clear aesthetic by letting go of any unwanted clutter before it makes it into the house. Balance each area of the house making sure that the key areas of relationships, health and wealth are addressed and fill the home with fresh energy in the form of plants and fresh flowers, aromatherapy scents and uplifting music, to allow people enjoy using

similar to the word for ‘death’. The physical design of the furniture is fluid and balanced and does not include protruding angles or awkward shapes. This detailed attention to Feng Shui ensures the most positive energy possible for the furniture and the space it is used in.

Ultimately, there are many aspects of Feng Shui that all contribute to creating a healthy and balanced environment and work to connect us back to positive, nourishing energy and to nature. Whether buying or selling a new home, or just readjusting our current home, Feng Shui serves to improve our space, our health, our relationships and our peace of mind.

FROm DREAmS TO REALITY...AN ARcHITEcTS ROLE

Architecture presents an opportunity to create something uniquely relative and situational. Liam Kerrigan finds new inspiration in this approach

Evolution, progression, change – all defining words of the state of the world today,

whether it is the advanced awareness of global warming, medicine or as superficial as the cars we drive and new technology available. As we become more aware of what is possible with the vast array of digital equipment and the leaps that have been made towards ensuring the sustainability of tomorrow we become more interested and intrigued as to how we can implement these technological advancements to enhance our state of living.

Nothing has ever personified our own personalities and desires as much as where we call home, the physical walls we live within. To truly create a unique space to call ‘home’, hours, days and more than likely, years, have gone into the virtual creation in our minds of how we want our perfect ‘dream’ home to look, to feel and what we want it to say about us. Sadly, very few if any of us possess the unique skills required to conceptualise in a functional form and materialise the design of the masterpiece that’s laying there, in pieces, in our minds.

draw inspiration from what design elements have been implemented in the past. The RMA architecture firm ensure their clients are afforded multiple digital walk through viewings and 3-dimensional computer generated renderings to ensure what has been conceived appears in the physical form as it did in the creative minds of the owners and the architect, allowing them to see and feel what they have envisioned long before construction commences.

As the luxury property market starts to show strong signs of resurgence and uniqueness becomes paramount again, the implementation of a creative architect to conceptualise your dream home will be the catalyst required to ensure your personality and dreams are materialised just as you always wanted them to be.

❱ For more visit www.rma-architecture.com.au

The SHAW Brand is fortunate in the respect that they have created their business facilitating the transaction of these ‘dream’ homes, often created with no pre-set budget with the sole intention of bringing an idea spiked with grandeur, to reality. Often however, their clients want more, better or are desiring a design that truly breaks the mould and challenges the norm. A firm like Richard Myers and Associates possesses the foresight, skill set and lateral thinking ability to assess a luxury residential project and conceive an idea both unique and timeless in a true International style, implementing the use of straight lines, neutral tones and incorporating spatial wideness. By fundamentally limiting the materials palette and trying to steer clear of new materials that will ultimately fade from fashion or trend, RMA designed buildings are created with a timeless design approach. In this, there

is a gross misconception that good design is expensive, design is all about planning and proportion so a beautiful home does not necessarily require the most expensive finishes to portray an image of opulence, expense or uniqueness. Fundamental engineering feats that incorporate the personality of the owner and the designer including floating horizontal boxes, slabs of concrete and natural wood finishes are staple ingredients in the design implemented by owner, Richard Myers.

No matter what, technology will never be able to match the unique creativity, masterful foresight and emotional connection a truly skilful architect or designer can bring to the table, quite literally. An architect possessing these skills can transform the personalities, aspirations and dreams of their clients into a material form to be admired by not only the end user but the next generation looking to

The passion of Bentley in Australia continues. Paul Piert, Sales Manager of

Bentley Brisbane speaks of the growth in Queensland and his vibrant team, which stems back to January 2005 when Bentley Brisbane was born and the flagship created in Queensland.

Mr Piert comments on Bentley’s progression; “it’s unsurpassed in the local luxury vehicle market and at its heart is the service values and importantly outstanding quality and appeal of the cars. The continuing success of the W12 range and the stunning new additions to the lineup coming in the future, including the GT V8, new 4.0 litre V8 engine, Bentley will ensure that the growth continues.”

❱ The new Bentley V8The clues are there. The dark mesh radiator grille, ringed by bright metal. The aggressive lower bumper with its three air intakes. The dark rear valance, with its twin exhaust tailpipes shaped into an elongated, side-on figure eight. And one further small, but significant detail: a red enamel Bentley winged ‘B’. These are the tell-tale signs of an all-new Bentley, powered by a 4.0 litre V8 engine.

Pressing the start button of the advanced new 4.0 litre V8 engine and its inspiring repertoire of sound is brought to life. From the deep V8 burble at low engine speeds to the rising growl and rasp as the car accelerates.

Bentley’s new V8 develops a massive 660 Newton metres of torque at the comparatively low engine speed of 1700rpm, catapulting a Continental GT

Its greater number of ratios ensures that the engine is always working at its most efficient gearing.

From the distinctive backbeat of its eight cylinders at idling speed to the glorious snarl of full-throttle acceleration, the new V8 offers an exhilarating, involving and passionate route to Bentley Continental

ownership. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed transmission transmit its power to the road with unshakable precision. This is a Bentley that can both stir the soul or calm the spirit, according to the mood of the driver or the conditions.

The Crewe styling team has created a Bentley coupé of elegantly tailored lines

and muscular form, with the precise crease of the front wings shaped by advanced aluminium super forming technology.

Those distinctive large, close-set inner headlamps are ringed by jewel-like LED lights. At the rear, Bentley’s signature ‘floating’ LED lights draw ones eye to the extremities of the car, emphasising its low, wide stance. A shape that echoes some of the great Bentley grand tourers of the past, yet the design is clean, contemporary and fresh.

Can you handle the new all-wheel drive, 8-speed, 4.0 litre, twin turbo Bentley Continental GT V8? A Bentley has never been an everyday sight and it never will be. Ensure you experience the GT V8 that drives to a different beat.

The vast white wilderness is no longer the domain of fearless travellers as My Adventure Store discovers with Peregrine

DREAMING OF ANTARCTICA?

PROMOTION.

Take a moment to picture yourself in Antarctica. Penguins waddle around

you on pillows of ice, whales pop up right next to your kayak, and your breath is taken as you view the expanse of white ice shelves and mountains beyond your ship’s deck. It’s not often you allow yourself to dream of stepping ashore and looking around to see a traveller’s final frontier. But for anyone who dreams of this moment, the far icy reaches of Antarctica are no longer out of reach.

On most journeys to the peninsula the richly historic sub-Antarctic islands will be a travellers’ first experience of this isolated world. These islands are a perfect introduction combining well-known Antarctic wildlife with historical sites. If South Georgia is on your itinerary prepare yourself for a symphony of cacophonous penguins at Salisbury

Plains. And don’t miss toasting Shackleton at his final resting place before heading further south accompanied by albatross at your stern.

As you approach the Antarctic Peninsula you’ll begin to notice more and more enormous tabular icebergs passing you by. Then the vast floating cliffs will release a tumbling chunk of ice into the water and you’ll know you’ve reached a polar region in all its glory. Nearby the flash of a whale’s fluke – slick and graceful as it dives – will catch your eye. Your introduction to Antarctica will be nothing short of enchanting.

If you’ve been dreaming of experiencing Antarctica here are some tips to help you get the most out of your time down south:

❱ Make sure you go kayaking. Paddling past grand icebergs that dwarf you in your kayak is a memorable

experience. Don’t worry about the freezing waters and the friendly locals AKA whales, strict safety guidelines are adhered to by all operators in Antarctica.

❱ Take advantage of as many of the shore landings as possible. Watch chinstrap penguins waddle around you and seals sunbathe on the rocks, walk among rookeries of adelie and gentoo penguins and observe nesting seabirds.

❱ If you’re a keen photographer

Page 57: SHAW Journal Edition 2

55.

make sure you have protective gear for your camera and your camera has good telephoto capacity. For those using an SLR camera, a minimum of 300mm is recommended.

❱ Most importantly, take the time to feel the elements, listen to the silence, and watch the changing colour of the ice and water. Put your camera down and just take it all in! The air is so unpolluted and clear that the light is simply incredible.

They all are, but 2003 seems more able to shape-up to food in a way that cooler vintages suggest that you should enjoy the wine on its’ own.

On first taste most striking was the creaminess with minerality. Rather than oysters as would normally be the case, that richness had me thinking of Foie Gras on toast. Even more that sublime combination of truffles and eggs; maybe that frittata con tartuffo de Alba.

The art of food and wine combination is a really special skill. At home we can’t expect to achieve what sommelier and chef work hard at in those restaurants we love. When we are left to make those choices ourselves we can complicate it too much. So when you get home with

the DP 2003 make it simple, rich and special; get that truffle and make an omelette and you won’t be disappointed.

Apocryphal it may be but the last words of John Maynard Keynes are

said to be “My only regret is that I didn’t drink more Champagne”. I’m with him. It’s a rare privilege isn’t it, to be able to describe which Champagnes we like; more privilege again to know why. Of all the Champagnes Dom Pérignon holds that special pedigree of the most famous of all, and though rappers may prefer swigging from the bottle, a chilled flute of Dom is a pleasure as rare as it is costly.

The 2003 vintage has been shaped by a frigid winter and hail damage followed by a scorching summer and though the result might be less energetic than some of the recent years it has been a vintage with a muscularity perfectly suited to food. At sixty percent Pinot noir and forty percent chardonnay the balance achieved would support almost anything.

A NIGHT OF TRuFFLES ANDVINTAGE FRENcH cHAmPAGNE

CULINARY.

Sydney based food and wine writer Michael Shaw provides a candid insight into the way Dom Pérignon should be enjoyed

Dom Pérignon Vintage 2003

"Because of the abnormally low yields of chardonnay, this is a blend of 60% Pinot noir, 40% chardonnay. It spent seven years on lees prior to disgorgement and another 12 months on cork prior to release. The bouquet is fragrant and flowery, the palate intense; it and the after taste are exceptionally long; the touch of grapefruit zest bitterness sharpens and cleanses the finish and compensates for the lower than normal acidity. If there is a single word for the wine, it is ‘structure’. Drink to 2023; 97 points."
