Isle Madame Built Heritage:

The property featured in this edition of The Informer is the beautiful Notre Dame de l’ Assomption Church (pictured above). Construction of this community landmark began in 1835 with the arrival of Reverend Jean-Baptiste Maranda. The church that was in use

at the time was in very poor condition and it was thought that a new and larger church should be built. Initially the decision was to use stone but that was beyond the means of the congregation so a wooden structure was built.

In 1853, this church became the cathedral church for the newly-created diocese of Arichat. The diocese eventually was moved to Antigonish and this grand building became a proto-cathedral.

Our Lady of Assumption / Notre Dame de l’ Assomption has been a Provincial Registered Property since 1995. Its designation and value for the community is that it is the oldest wooden Catholic Church in Nova Scotia as well as its architectural blend of the Neo-Classical and Gothic Revival architectural styles.
