Every year, for fi ve days, Sinaia becomes the “spring metropolis of insurance” not only for the Romanian market but also for CEE, Russia & CIS. Its name is quasi synonymous withFIAR - THE INTERNATIONAL INSURANCEREINSURANCE FORUM.

INTERNATIONAL MARKETS DAY 2009

The INTERNATIONAL MARKETS DAY of FIAR always off ers to its attendance the main picture of the insurance market`s evolution over the year that has passed.

In 2009, the event outlined this year`s main challenges for the local insurance market, starting from the implications of the international fi nancial crunch, but also to defi ne the infl uences from Central and Eastern European countries in the same context, focusing on opportunities, sources of growth and need to re-shape the product off ering.

Over 170 representatives of groups with a wide experience in Central Europe – AEGON, GENERALI PPF Holding, as well as specialists on the insurance and reinsurance markets from Russia, such as EASTERN Re and the CIS area pointed out some features of the region`s industry, focusing on the specifi cs and the growth perspectives under the current economic conditions.

One thing is certain: those who never miss the INTERNATIONAL MARKETS DAY of FIAR are always one step ahead in elaborating their strategic plans!

The series of 6 dedicated Conferences from FIAR started in 2009 with the BROKERS` DAY.

At this year edition, over 130 specialists in insurance and private pensions brokerage were present. UNSAR and UNSICAR, the national professional associations of the insurers and insurance brokers, were also represented at top level.

The fi nancial crisis and the adaptability of the brokerage market, the relationship insurer-broker seen as competition or partnership and the premises and perspectives of the professional qualifi cation were the main issues analyzed at the conference.

These tough economic times will make brokers stronger, as they will focus even more on the consulting part of this profession, the act of selling no longer being the main target. This was one of the conclusions that emerged after the Conference.

BROKERS`DAY is by far more than a Conference. It is one of the few opportunities that the brokerage market`s leaders and specialist have to gather in a familiar atmosphere and identify the trends and opportunities in their activity.

Year after year, the MOTOR INSURANCE DAY gathers representatives of insurance and reinsurance companies as well as of companies that activate in domains related to the motor insurance: brokers, services, technical assistance, dismantlers, producers/ importers of motor cars spare parts, leasing companies and organizations such as CSA, BAAR, FPVS, ALB and ANSDAR.

More than 150 specialists participated at MOTOR INSURANCE DAY this year to discuss about the amicable report, the applicability of this procedure and the insurers` insuffi cient preparation in this respect.

The situation of non-material damage, as well as their development on the national insurance market, represented another topic tackled at the conference.

The well-known dynamic of the motor insurance industry off ers each year important subjects of discussion.

Another FIAR Conference that grows stronger year after year, together with the industry that it is dedicated to, is the PRIVATE PENSIONS DAY. The event debuted before the Romanian private pensions system itself, as a regional forum meant to be the most important occasion to achieve the highly needed know-how transfer in the region.

In 2009, for the very fi rst time, PRIVATE PENSIONS DAY enjoyed the support and participation of a prestigious entity representing the interests of the private pensions markets at European level, EFRP – European Federation for Retirement Provision.

When the almost 100 participants discussed about the perspectives of the private pensions industry, “stability” and “long term” were the most common words used: legislative stability, long term investment horizons, economic sustainability and social usefulness.

As the regional private pensions markets are still very young and fast growing, the future edition of the PRIVATE PENSIONS DAY is expected to approach even more complex issues.

FINANCIAL INVESTMENTS DAY 2009

It was a success in 2009, as well as in 2008, therefore we are pleased to say that having the FINANCIAL INVESTMENTS DAY at FIAR tends to become a tradition. The event consists in presentations delivered by the CFA Romania members and in the discussion that follow them.

CFA Romania in the association of Romanian professionals in investments, almost all of them detaining the Chartered Financial Analyst title, qualifi cation administrated by CFA Institute (USA).

The topic of the 2009 edition of the FINANCIAL INVESTMENTS DAY was changing the investments strategies during the economic crisis. The members of CFA Romania present at the event debated on the crisis impact on the fi nancial investments in Romania, as well as the long term returns expected from the investment funds.

What about our investments in 2010? We expect the CFA specialists to tell us next FIAR!

LIFE AND HEALTH INSURANCE DAY 2009

LIFE AND HEALTH INSURANCE DAY, an event reaching already its second edition at FIAR 2009, constitutes one of the few opportunities for life insurers and brokers to meet and discuss their common issues, both from a regional and local perspective.

How does the crisis aff ect the life insurance line of business? What do the clients want in times of crisis? Is the deductibility a solution? These are one of the main questions that found their answers during the Conference. Moreover, the market study regarding the life and health insurances and their customers, realized by MEDNET Marketing Research Center, was once more a point of interest at the conference.

The event gathered over 80 leaders and specialists this year and, since the life and health insurance industry is continuously growing, their number is expected to grow as well at the editions that follow.

The Offi cial Opening of FIAR traditionally takes place in the most elegant venues in Sinaia – the splendid decor of the Mirror Hall of Sinaia Casino. In 2009, the opening ceremony and cocktail were followed by the Offi cial Reception sponsored by UNIQA Asigurări. This is the place where, year after year, the world’s insurance and reinsurance leaders and specialists get together to celebrate the beginning of a new edition of the most important European spring event.

The insurers and reinsurers from Central and Eastern Europe

that did not know any details regarding the activity of MILLI Re

were able to hear them directly from its representatives, with the

occasion of FIAR 2009, where MILLI Re off ered a traditional Turkish business lunch & coff ee break. The original manner in which

they have presented themselves has fi nally lead to identifying new

business opportunities, in a specifi c Turkish environment.

Safe by sea and air with

Astra Insurance occupies the third place in the non-life insurance top.

At the end of the fi rst half of 2009, Astra Insurance reported a 62% increase in Gross Written Premiums compared to the similar period in 2008. In addition, the company recorded an increase of 315% in property insurance and an increase of 69% in Motor Hull Insurance compared to the fi rst half of 2008.

At the same time, Astra Insurance recorded in the fi rst six months a profi t of RON 5,389,008, maintaining the ascendant trend of the fi rst quarter of 2009.

Astra Insurance is one of the most important players in the Romanian insurance market and at the same time, the most important insurance company in Romania with capital and shareholders which are preponderantly Romanian. The equity of the company reaches EUR 55 million. The company is a leader in the market for maritime insurance and aviation insurance, an important insurer in the property and motor fi eld, and a traditional player in the third party liability insurance fi eld.
