Thank you to our host Stu Glaser, and welcome to our new 2016 Board members. Thank you for volunteering your services for the upcoming year. Being a member of the board helps you to understand and learn what goes on inside the organization, and is an opportunity for you to be more engaged, as well as building closer friendships with the other photographers. We would love to have you join us in filling a position in future years. Your input is important to us. #

Our congratulations to Stu Glaser and Chris Vander Velde in receiving their Indianhead Fellowship Degrees and to all those who earned gold bars for their time, services and competition throughout the years. We are so proud of you and thank you all so much for giving so much to our organization.#

We wish to also congratulate Stu Glaser and Chris Vander Velde for receiving their 2015 Gold Photographer Awards, and Ginny Otto for receiving a Silver Photographer Award, as well as her Craftsman Degree at Imaging USA held in Atlanta, GA recently. #

Congratulations to John Hartman for receiving an ASP Honorary Educational Associate Award.#

The motivational speaker this year was Amy Purdy, a young woman who lost both feet from Neisseria Meningistis at an early age in 1999. She beat all odds and overcame her life threatening illness and loss of feet, both kidneys, and her spleen, returning to the slopes with her own custom designed and built feet to become the 2014 Paralympic bronze medal. You may know her from her recent performance on Dancing with the Stars, taking second place in the competition there, or The Amazing Race in 2012. It was unknown to us how much she has done to give back all over the world. She is the co-founder of Adaptive Action Sports to help other individuals with disabilities do the things they love. Her love for photography is also an important role n her life, wishing she could have taken in the convention alongside us. #

We are proud of our members who entered and received merits and awards this year in the 2015 IPC Competiton. Remember that you, too, can be a winner. It’s starts here at IPPA. The judges help us all to improve not only our competition work, but our every day work as well. It is important for all of us to concentrate on the little things that make our business a success. I always told myself that if I couldn’t go back one year and look at my work and say, “Yuck”, I failed myself in progressing in my field. Looking back at our old work is sometimes discouraging, however, it can be the most encouraging thing we could ever do for ourselves to consistantly improve. #

I challenge each of you to enter our monthly competitions, whether you be new, or have your Master’s Degree. You can only gain in the process. It isn’t about being better than the next one, but rather, to be better than you were before.# # # # # # # # # #

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

I hope all of you had a busy Fall and did well with Families and Children for greeting cards and portraits for Christmas gifts.  My Fall was slower in that regard than I would like, but I did more music groups and the high schools in Eau Claire than there was time to finish doing the imaging, printing and delivering them back to the school.  By Christmas, I was worn out and glad to know there was a break in my business so I can get caught up and have a chance to catch my breath.!!The week after Christmas, I left for Boulder and spent 10 days with my daughter Megan and her family.  Of course that means I went out to spend time with my Grandson Hayes.  I had a wonderful time, got more sleep than I get at home, which help my body do some recovery from my crazy December. I also was able to get out four days for some skiing in the mountains.  Hayes has been in ski classes since last January (all through the summer too) in an indoor ski school for children 10 months old and older.

He improved so much since I last skied with him last winter.  He still has to learn how to turn, but he has amazing balance for a 28 month old.  He skis in the morning and snowboards in the afternoon.   Just ask me and I am more than happy to show you a video or two or 50 of him on the slopes.!!I left Boulder for Atlanta and Imaging USA.  The programs were very good and included everything from New Borns, Children, Family Groups, Photoshop Classes and then there were also people giving programs in the Trade Show.  Julieanna Kost from Adobe is an excellent teacher and has so much to offer that would easily help all of us.  I would love to do a full day with her at imaging or just about anywhere.  If you are not familiar with her, here are a couple of links that you can find out more:  www.j.kost.net   or at www.facebook.com/julieannakost!!Hope you have spent some time looking ahead and planning what you will be doing this year.  Will you be doing any promotions?  Advertising, Direct Mail, Email Marketing, Facebook Ads, Google Ads?  There are many ways to let people know….so how will you let them know about and winter promotions, senior specials, fall family special dates, or whatever you decide to do?!!Hope up have and amazing 2016.  Congratulations to Chris Vander Velde for being IPPA 2015 Photographer of the Year and for Image of the Year.!Also hope you will join us on Feb. 8th (the day after the Super Bowl) in Colby for our next meeting.  Ken Martin will be doing a program on How to Make Your Landscape Photographs Look Better.!!See you in Colby on Monday, February 8th, Tom!

3D Photographic Imagery – Part 2 by Stu Glaser

I was introduced to “do it yourself” 3D transparency during college and after graduation I bought a used Stereo Realist twin lens camera to take more stereo images without the need for my homemade camera platform nor the tedious developing and mounting process.

Now I could shoot both left and right photos simultaneously and then send the exposed COLOR slide film off to Kodak and receive stereo mounted images ready for viewing. It was pretty exciting waiting for those slides to return !!!

These Kodak stereo slides could be viewed in a variety of ways. Viewing through my homemade device (mentioned in Part 1 in November’s newsletter) or a cheap slide holder that also was aimed at a light source. I then had a self contained viewer with its own built in light source. The alternate way that eluded me was a 3D stereo projector for wall projection viewing for an audience wearing polarized glasses.

To explore and create slides of depth was a new thrill for me. A joy of creativity that I hadn't experienced since my first image appeared in a dark room swishing a paper in wet chemicals!

The Stereo Realist Camera

The Stereo Realist camera was invented by Seton Rochwite and manufactured by the David White Company of Milwaukee from 1947- 1971 and sold for about $159.00. Put in the hands of professionals and amateurs this stereo camera provided the ability to produce stereo color slide transparencies. To photograph with the Stereo Realist one would lift the lens cover, focus, manually set the aperture and shutter speed, cock the shutter and then take the picture. The wind release button must be depressed briefly while beginning to wind the

film to the next frame. The film winding is then completed so that the camera is ready to shoot another pair of images. The 135mm Kodak ASA 10 (later 25 ASA) transparency exposed film would be processed. Metal, plastic or paper dual stereo masks, cutters, slide mounters, viewers, projectors, etc were manufactured and made available for the processed film to be made into stereo slides by the photographer.

The Competition

The Stereo Realist system proved so popular that several companies, such as Revere, Bell and Howell’s TDC (Three Dimension Company) and Kodak came out with their own cameras using the same format. The Kodak came out 7 years after the Stereo Realist but at half the price and sold very well almost eclipsing the Realist in total sales.

3D Stereo Images, Who used it and Why

Although costly for the time at $159.00 the Stereo Realist camera was unique and began to be used in a variety of ways. The amateurs used it to share their photos shot in 3D of family, vacation and family functions. The professionals used it as a way to expand their offerings as pros and to make profits. Photographers of various ilk produced stereo images to cover events (weddings, business functions), international travel and images of the, less say….more erotic in nature. Professionals found work within the commercial, educational, governmental and scientific arenas.

Marketing and Marketing and Marketing

What I find the very interesting is how the Stereo Realist was marketed to the public through a barrage of print ads in various forms. Ads targeted the ease and excitement of the new technology.
