Who we are and what we do…There’s lots of great work going on in Rosewell, often solely involving volunteers but it can perhaps be confusing at times as to who does what, when and where! As this is the third year of our calendar we wanted to further explain the community groups and what they do, so that every home in Rosewell has a handy reference.

Rosewell Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group – Made up of local volunteers, local organisations (including RDT and RDCC) and Midlothian Council representatives, the group is tasked with overseeing the Neighbourhood Plan, developing an action plan to work towards positive outcomes that have arisen through consultations with local people and the creation of the fantastic calendar which comes through your door every year!

The group meet at Rosewell Resource Centre, 7pm on a Thursday once a month. The dates for 2018 are 11th Jan, 8th Feb, 8th March, 12th April, 10th May, 14th June, 13th Sept, 11th Oct & 8th Nov.

RDCC – Rosewell & District Community Council bridges the gap between Midlothian Council and the local community and help to make public bodies aware of the opinions and needs of the people they represent. The Community Council is made up of local people who all volunteer throughout the year as well as at the 7 meetings held annually in Rosewell Parish Church Hall. All meetings are held on Monday evenings and begin at 7pm – the following meetings for 2018 are: 22nd Jan, 5th March, 23rd April (AGM), 4th June, 27th Aug, 1st Oct and 26th Nov – all at 7pm in the Rosewell Parish Church Hall.

RDCC aim to promote the well-being of the community and to foster community spirit, it is also the place to go to if there’s anything at all we can assist you with that will help make community life better for you.

RDT – Rosewell Development Trust work to support the economic, education, community and social development of Rosewell.

They offer extensive community engagement, volunteer and training projects in conjunction with supporting people into jobs and apprenticeships.

The RDT team are currently working hard to bring to fruition the creation of a much-needed Community Hub to serve the needs of the community. The team have received funding from Big Lottery to carry out all the necessary site investigations, develop the design of the building and create a detailed cost plan for the project, all of which will enable the team to move forward with the final stage application for the project. If successful with all the funding applications, they would hope to start on site with the development later this year. See our April calendar month for more information on these exciting developments.

Rosewell Development Trust offer lots of voluntary and training opportunities from working with children, young people, families, adults and older people; delivering community events or accessing FREE First Aid training. RDT also offer a range of community groups including groups for families, Lunch Clubs, woodland events and computer classes.

This calendar has a strong emphasis on the 12 Action Points that have been highlighted through consultations with the community and strong partnership work with RDT and RDCC. It includes realistic goals and timeframes, which include giving young people more of a voice, introduction of new community facilities, increased engagement with community bodies, improvement of bus services, reduction of the amount of dog fouling, littering and fly tipping in the village through the RDT ‘Keep Rosewell Beautiful’ and the introduction of the ‘Green Dog Walkers’ scheme.

There’s lots of great work going on in Rosewell, often solely involving volunteers. Rosewell & District Community Council, Rosewell Development Trust and Rosewell Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group are all committed to work together to make Rosewell a better, stronger and more sustainable place for the people that live there. This doesn’t happen overnight but what is being achieved within this community by local volunteers is something to be proud of! The time, commitment and enthusiasm local volunteers have shown to the projects delivered in Rosewell is greatly appreciated.

The group would LOVE more people to get involved, specifically young people – you will find out more information about the efforts to give young people more of a voice in the June and July pages of this calendar.

As a team of volunteers, it is recognised that some people may be put off attending the Steering Group meetings due to the thoughts that they are formal, which they’re not! They are inclusive, interesting and proactive meetings and to ensure they continue this way, guest speakers will be invited to the March (Green Dog Walkers), June (Midlothian Youth Platform & Scottish Youth Parliament), and September (Midlothian Council Community Safety) meetings.

This, the group hopes, will encourage people to come along and get involved in key issues that they are interested in throughout the year. It does not mean that volunteers are expected at every meeting should they only be interested in a specific topic.

RDCC is consulted by the Scottish Government, Midlothian Council Police Scotland, The Crown Estate and numerous public and charitable organisations on all matters affecting Rosewell, such as major planning applications, roads and traffic, transport, education, health, environmental and community issues. The Community Council is made up of local people who all volunteer throughout the year as well as at the 7 meetings held annually. All meetings are open to the public and all residents are invited to come along and have their say. Elections are held every 3 years, and residents of Rosewell & District aged 16 or over, who are on the electoral roll, can stand for election.

Over the past 5 years, RDT have developed strong partnerships with both local Primary schools and High Schools and worked with children and young people to develop volunteering opportunities and offer mentoring and CV advice through a ‘Positive Destination’ programme in Penicuik. What they deliver is often shaped by the people who access the services. Children, young people, adults, older people and families all have the opportunity to feedback and get involved in the projects through regular consultations or through volunteering.

The long-term goal for RDT is to develop a multi-purpose Community Hub in the heart of Rosewell. The team are working hard to make this happen! The organisation offers lots of voluntary and training opportunities from working with children, delivering community events or accessing FREE First Aid training. They also offer a range of community groups including groups for families, Lunch Clubs, woodland events and computer groups.

Green Dog WalkersThe Green Dog Walkers scheme is a Midlothian Council community led initiative to help reduce dog fouling in Midlothian.

Dog walking volunteers are needed to help change attitudes about dog fouling. Volunteers can wear a green armband or dogs may have a green collar and/or lead to signify they are part of the scheme and will:

• Clean up after their dog

• Identify they are part of the scheme

• Wear a green armband/green collar or lead (dogs)

• Carry extra dog waste bags

• Be happy to be approached to give out dog waste bags

• Be a friendly reminder to other dog walkers to clean up after their dogs

We now have a Green Dog Walkers Group in Rosewell. The group will help to administer and publicise the campaign in our area. Starter packs are available at the Resource Centre.

Other Dog Related IssuesIt is against the law for anyone who is responsible for a dog to not clean up after the dog has fouled. They face a fixed penalty fine of £80. The fine increases to £100 if it is not paid within 28 days. The maximum fine is £500 if convicted of an offence.

Please contact Midlothian Council if you see that people are letting their dogs foul and not picking it up. To help investigate and target warden patrols, please contact via website: midlothian.gov.uk and report dog fouling or call 0131 561 5284 providing the following information:

• where and when dog fouling is happening.

• the dog owner’s name and address, if you know it.

• what the dog looks like, including breed and colour.

• your own contact details.

Bag it and bin it and help us eliminate poo trees and dog fouling in Rosewell!

Sheep WorryingSheep worrying does not only refer to animals being attacked or injured, but also includes animals being disturbed or chased. Spring is crucial for lamb development and disturbance can have adverse or fatal effects on their survival. Please keep your dog under control near or where there are livestock.

Please report all incidents of livestock worrying by calling Police Scotland on 101 – always dialing 999 in an emergency. Rosewell wants to keep “ewe” safe!

Rosewell is growing at a tremendous rate! With the development of 595 proposed new houses in the village there is even greater need for proper community facilities to fulfil the needs of our growing population.

With this in mind, RDT have been working hard to deliver the facilities required. They have recently finished the construction of a new woodland classroom in Thornton Woods which will enable them to expand their extremely popular woodland events and will be offering sessions for children, those in the community with additional support needs and older people. They will also be offering the opportunity for other groups throughout Midlothian and further afield to enjoy the facilities. The Community Hub is progressing and there should be some good news on the building project very soon! Over the last year, there’s been lots of growth in Rosewell – between new houses being built, the new RDT woodland classroom and now the work that has started, after a long wait, on the Steading Site, it’s a busy village!

There has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes to move the project forward. With funding support from Big Lottery, RDT have now appointed Architects to work on the design for the building, the final designs have been prepared and the community has been consulted on them.

RDT have commissioned all the necessary site investigations required to ensure the stability of the site and to find out if there is any remedial work required before they start building. RDT also have funding in place to cover the cost of demolition of the old farm buildings and will be carrying this out as soon as they have confirmation of the complete funding package for the project.

The Hub will greatly enhance the work that RDT currently deliver and will offer all the facilities our growing community requires including a multi-functional large main hall, soft play, café bar and sensory space.

What RDT are doing to keep the Rosewell identity aliveThe Rosewell History Group meets 6 times a year to work on projects relating to the history of Rosewell. They learn more about the village and surrounding area and work together with other RDT groups such as the Rosewell Lunch Club and Kid World Citizen group to promote and include others in the importance of keeping Rosewell History alive! The plans for the Rosewell Community Hub include an interactive History Wall which will be a big project for RDT, the Rosewell History Group and local schools and organisations within Rosewell through partnership work.

It’s the ‘Year of Young People!’ 2018, an opportunity to celebrate the amazing young personalities, talents, and achievers that make up Scotland. It’s all about inspiring our nation through its young people’s ideas, attitudes and ambitions.

Local young people are involved in a lot! Midlothian Youth Platform is run by a group of young people, with support from Lifelong Learning and Employability, Midlothian Council. They aim to bring a voice to the young people of Midlothian. Every young person aged 12 – 21 is welcome to attend the meetings. The times and venue of which can be found on Facebook in the group called Midlothian Youth Platform or contact Julia Ellison, 0131 270 5777. In 2017, the Rosewell Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group gained a new member, a local young person and Rosewell resident, Kari. Kari sits on the Midlothian Youth Platform and is dedicated to promoting youth voices throughout Midlothian.

The Rosewell Community Youth Leadership project was a joint piece of work between RDT and Midlothian Council in 2015 involving young people designing a consultation for their peers (108 Primary School children and 23 Secondary School young people) to find out their views on Rosewell.

What is Young Scot?Young Scot Rewards is a scheme rewarding young people for being involved in activities and for volunteering, the hours are then logged and points are allocated and can be changed into rewards. Get in touch with RDT for more info!

Girlguiding and Scouting:

Running on a week night and allowing children and young people to access fun activities, trips and learning opportunities, these groups provide great socialising and development opportunities for local young people. Those who access Girlguiding and Scouting are actively encouraged to contribute to the planning of the programme, suggesting ideas on what to do and helping within the local community! RDT Kid World Citizen Group:

This is a group for children in Rosewell to effectively contribute to society and what they can change. The children said that they enjoyed getting to make lunch for the Senior Citizen’s Lunch Club, drawing cards and pictures, and helping others. Kid World Citizen is a fun experience for all who take part, with one even saying that they enjoyed everything!

The Scottish Youth Parliament is the voice of Scotland’s young people aged between 14 – 25. Members are democratically elected every two years. Midlothian has 2 SYP members, Mya Lawson and Megan Kay, who were elected in 2017. They will attend sittings throughout the year and promote the SYP campaigns.

Community Hub plans:

The RDT development of the Community Hub at the old steading site on the corner of Carnethie Street and Gorton Road will be a great facility for everyone to access! Through previous community consultations, including the consultation delivered by the Rosewell Community Youth Leadership team, the most important aspects of the Community Hub to young people, included:

– Access to WiFi/Internet zones– Café – More opportunities (social and volunteering)– Community Cinema– Local jobs/support.

The Hub will provide WiFi access, an affordable and modern café, more opportunities for young people to access fitness, music and art classes as well as increased support in either offering employment directly through RDT and the Community Hub or provide support in looking for employment.

Craft Groups:

RDT deliver lots of groups for babies, children and young people. Feedback is gathered every 3 months to make sure that what they are delivering is what people want, enjoy and find useful! The feedback is aimed at anyone age 6 and above and responses vary from enjoying ‘the mixture of boys and girls’, ‘planting and delivering random acts of kindness flowers’, ‘having adults/teenagers help us’ and ‘learning about different activities’.

Whitehill Welfare:

The semi-professional Football Team are based in Rosewell and play regular matches at the pitch and away. More details can be found by visiting their website and getting involved: www.whitehillwelfare.co.uk

Wonders of our Woodland!

Rosewell Development Trust work hard to deliver woodland sessions throughout the year, and although most of the sessions in 2017 took place during school hours, with the development of the fantastic woodland classroom – more sessions are planned throughout 2018 to get children, young people and adults working together, having fun and enjoying the outdoors! If you are interested in learning more about this fantastic facility or to enquiry about booking sessions, please get in touch with RDT.

Thornton Rose, Riding for the Disabled:

Based in Thornton farm, Thornton Rose support disabled horse riders on a weekly basis to develop skills, confidence and fitness – all supported by volunteers. This is a great voluntary opportunity and more information can be found by visiting their website: www.thornton-rose-rda.org.uk

Girlguiding and Scouting:

Both organisations involve children in their planning of sessions and meetings, delivering activities and being involved in community events in Rosewell such as the annual Tea in the Park/Big Lunch event and the ‘Keep Rosewell Beautiful’ Litter Picking group.

AUGUST 2018Rosewell the place to be safe

Road SafetyRosewell is generally a safe place but there is always room for improvement. This year we would like to:

1. Improve safe crossing points

2. Encourage safer parking

3. Reduce speeding traffic

Some kerbs have already been widened on Carnethie Street to create safer crossing points. There are plans to widen more kerbs further down Carnethie Street.

The new roundabout at the junction of the A6094 and B7003 near the Avant Homes development has 2 fenced corral crossing points to help horses and riders feel safer.

Community Police Officers are aware of the inconsiderate car parking on the corners at the junction of Gorton Road and Carnethie Street and at the nearby bus stops. This has resulted in warnings and penalty notices being issued. Parking is particularly bad on Thursdays when local auctions are held.

Due to an increasing number of serious and fatal accidents occurring on the A6094, RDCC and local residents have successfully campaigned for safer roads around Rosewell. This has resulted in the speed limit on the A6094 south of Rosewell to a point south of U72 Ankrielaw Road being temporarily reduced from 60mph to 50mph for an 18-month period. Mobile speed cameras are now in operation along with a police speed camera motorcycle.

Issues raised are now taken forward by RDCC to the ‘Midlothian Traffic, Roads and Paths (M-TRAP) Group’– a sub group of the Midlothian Federation of Community Councils.

This newly established group’s Mission Statement is “Addressing issues of traffic, roads, paths and underfoot surfaces on behalf of Midlothian residents”.

By taking a Midlothian wide approach when dealing with issues, their aim is to achieve more success when dealing with various authorities.

SEPTEMBER 2018Rosewell the place to keep clean

LitterSince 2012, the ‘Keep Rosewell Beautiful’ Litter Picking group managed by RDT has collected more than 500 bags of rubbish. Meeting once a month most times throughout the year, the group is supported by between 8 to 10 volunteers.

RDT have worked with Rosewell Primary School and St. Matthew’s Primary School to promote clean streets and to highlight the issues and importance of litter and dog fouling. This work culminated in a poster competition – with the winning entries being made into a professional poster and displayed throughout the Rosewell village.

Fly TippingFly Tipping is a blight on our community, it is illegal, unsightly and can be especially dangerous to children and wildlife.

What the park offers

What the park could offer? Rosewell Park covers a considerable area in the centre of the village. It has a good play area for children, dog friendly rough areas, a football pitch and an attractive central area with plants and benches.

But what could we do to make the park more accessible and enjoyed by the whole community?

➢ Physical barriers – the provision of handrails and more stable paths would make access easier for wheelchair users or those unsteady on their feet.

➢ No toilet facilities – What do you do when your children or grandchildren say they need the toilet and you know there will not be time to get back home?

➢ No shelter or shade from rain or sun – what could we do to create some sheltered areas in the park to keep dry on those rainy days or take shade from the sun (not as likely as the former)?

➢ Nowhere for a picnic – the addition of picnic tables to the park would create family friendly picnic spots and encourage more people to enjoy the park.

Rosewell Park – Community MazeThe community maze was started as a grass-roots initiative way back in 2009/2010. The trees that make up the maze have grown and need looked after. Come along to one of RDT’s ‘Maze Day’s, meeting at Rosewell Resource Centre, 85 Carnethie Street at 11am to help out for a couple of hours. Dates are as follows:

The group really enjoyed putting this calendar together as it’s a reflection of all the exciting developments that happened throughout 2017! At time of printing, we unfortunately, are not able to reflect on everything that happened this year!

We hope that you will agree with us when we say that there is lots of great work going on in Rosewell, often solely involving volunteers who are all committed to working together to make Rosewell a better, stronger and sustainable place for YOU. The steering group continues to take the action plan started in 2015 forward with the appropriate partners both statutory and voluntary. This is achieved through collaboration with Councillors, Community Councillors and Midlothian Council Communities Team, who will continue to support the Neighbourhood Planning Steering Group and sub groups.
