THE IMMANUEL INFORMER
November 2015
MISSION STATEMENT Building Strong Relationships in Christ,
And Making Him Known to All.
When we were in Michigan on summer vacation,
I found a strange purple rock while hiking. The
glassy surface of the softball-sized stone made
me think it might be volcanic. When I showed it
to our relatives, they told me it looked like an
unusual shade of Leland Blue. In the late 1800s,
a nearby town on Lake Michigan had an iron
smelting plant. They burned hardwood from the
surrounding forests to turn iron ore into pig iron.
The leftover slag was dumped in the lake. To this
day, small chunks of bluish slag glass wash up
on the beach each spring, and beachcombers
collect it in jars or sell it to people who fashion
jewelry from it. What was once discarded as
waste is now a valuable find that can be made
into a work of art.
Our God wastes nothing. He can take the painful
junk in our lives and fashion it into something
beautiful. The Lord their God will save his
people on that day as a shepherd saves his flock.
They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a
crown. -Zechariah 9:16

Fishes Food Pantry. If you bring a food gift
you may bring it to the front of the church
before the service or give it to an usher.
If you have company for the holiday you
are invited to bring them with. Please join us

We are looking
forward to having a

Sunday, November 15.
For those who are
presently a part of other
Christian denominations, we will have a series of 3 classes,
at which time we will review the basic elements of the
Christian faith. Those transferring from other Lutheran
Churches are asked to attend the final class on Sunday,
November 8. Please let Pastor Anenson, Pastor Jensen or
the church office know if you would like to join our faith
community!
Christmas Angel Gifts Immanuel will once again help with The
Christmas Angel Gift Program this year.
Anyone wishing to purchase a gift for a youth
who is in need of a Christmas gift is invited to
take one of the paper gift tags listing a
gift for a specific child. Follow
the instructions found on both
the front and back of the tag.
The tags will be in the narthex
by Tuesday, November 24.
Gifts must be returned to the
church by Thursday, December 10
so they can be distributed to the families the
following week. Anyone not wanting to shop,
but wanting to contribute, can donate money.
We have people who will shop for you.
Wheelchair Pushers needed Immanuel is responsible for providing
wheelchair pushers at Bethany Manor for the
worship service each
Sunday during the month
of December. The
wheelchair pushers need
to be at the Bethany
Manor Chapel by 9:20
A.M. and will be done by
10:45 or 11 A.M. A sign up sheet is posted on
the narthex bulletin board. At least five people
are needed each week.
Sunday School Christmas Program Come join Sam, Halo, Slim, Styler, Holly and a host of
angels as they prepare to make the biggest announcement
ever - the birth of Jesus!! The Young Disciples and Junior
Choir team up again to present their Christmas Program,
Angels We Have Heard, December 20 during the 9:30
worship service. As the heavenly host prepare for the big
day, they think it should be announced in Paris or Rome,
anywhere but lowly Bethlehem. Nothing every happens in
Bethlehem. To their surprise, God's perfect plan is
unfolded in a humble cattle stall. Come see the story
unfold and hear favorite songs like Angels We Have
Heard on High and new songs like The Lord is a
Shepherd and From Glory to Glory. Our youth are sure to
bring joy to your Christmas season. The Kingdom Kids (preschool - 1st grade) will also be
presenting their Christmas program during the December 20
worship service.
Christmas Tea and
Bazaar
Saturday, December 5
11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Immanuel Lutheran Church will hold its
second annual Christmas Tea and Bazaar in
conjunction with the Story City Tour of
Homes. Last year was a huge success
because of the many contributions and
volunteers. Our church family is blessed
with many talented individuals!
This year we will
offer two kinds of soups,
desserts, Scandinavian
goodies, and the very
popular hot chocolate
bar. We will also have
items for sale at a
bazaar. The cost this year will be $10 for
the meal, which includes soup, dessert, and
drink or $5 for dessert and drink only.
You are invited to join us for a craft/
assembly/social night on Tuesday,
November 10 beginning at 6:30. (We will
hold one more craft night with the date still
to be determined.)
If you have an idea for a craft, please
purchase the materials needed to make
several of them. (Please keep your receipts
if you want to be reimbursed). Make a
sample to show everyone and we will
assemble them during our craft time.
Please bring along hot glue guns, scissors,
and other crafting supplies. Pinterest has
lots of ideas! We may look into a night for
making potato cakes/lefse.
There will be a sign-up sheet on the
narthex bulletin board. There are many
ways to volunteer:
baking, serving, set-
up, clean-up,
dishwashing, money
handlers, launder
tablecloths, deliver
posters, etc. Any
help, male or female will be greatly
appreciated!
We welcome any suggestions and/or
ideas. Please contact Jaynee Christian at
733.2710 or [email protected] or
contact the church office.
Adult Education Options for November In the Cornerstone Room: The Story of Your Life. In
2010, Grammy-nominated recording artist
Matthew West stepped outside his own life and
recorded an album inspired by the lives of
more than 10,000 listeners who sent him their
stories. West was transformed by the
experience, and now you can be too with The
Story of Your Life. The five sessions feature teaching
presentations by Matthew (set in the mountain cabin where
he wrote the songs for the album), interviews from some of
the people who shared their stories, and music videos. Come
discover the powerful way God uses the story of people's
lives, including yours! Optional books are available. Join us
throughout November in the Cornerstone Room!
In the Social Hall: Haiti Opportunities. On Nov. 1st,
Roger Oakland and Zachary Bauknecht will share pictures
and stories of their recent trip to Haiti. With the director of
Haiti Opportunities, Christon Domond, they visited several
Haitian churches that our congregation is partnering with to
create sustainable local ministry to widows and orphans.
Learn how our gifts of livestock are making it possible for
Haitian churches to care for the most needy in their
communities.
P.S. On Sunday, October 25th our missionary to India was
here for our adult class and shared briefly at our worship
service. Let’s be in prayer for our missionaries in India, Haiti
and the others we help sponsor in several countries around
the world.

Consecration Sunday Each fall we set aside a
special Sunday to highlight
what God’s Word says to us
about the sharing of the many gifts that the Lord
supplies. Members will receive a form in the
mail that they can bring on November 8 and
place in the offering plate. This provides an
opportunity for them to write down some of
those things they plan to do in 2016 to further
the work of Christ’s Kingdom through the
ministries of our congregation.
Congratulations to Susan Amensen who
was honored this past month for her work as
Senior Choir Director for 40 years! Thank you
Susan.
Congratulations to Kathy Gabrielson for
being named Guidance Counselor of the Year

Seasoned Souls Oktoberfest Celebration Around twenty-five Seasoned Souls gathered at the
home of Al and Karen Hermanson on a beautiful
autumn evening to enjoy an Oktoberfest Celebration.
There was an abundance of German dishes. Some of
them were awarded fabulous prizes! We enjoyed an
evening of great socializing and laughter. The
attendees were enlightened with some German trivia.
Some things you might not have known originated in
Germany are: the three ring binder, Nutcracker
Figurines, Gummi Bears, Gingerbread houses, Heinz
Ketchup, Hellman Mayonnaise, the light bulb and hair
perms (see Marlene Bauman about this one)! Did you
know that the German Chocolate Cake is actually an
American creation? The cake took its name from an
American with the last name of German! The things
you will learn when you attend a Seasoned Souls
event! Our next gathering will be a caroling event in
December.

There has been a lot in the news lately about the
physical and mental health benefits of having a grateful
attitude. As Christians, we know the greatest benefits of
being thankful are spiritual. We have so many blessings!
In the library we are especially grateful for God’s Word
and all the Christian authors who base their writing upon
it. We are also thankful for our many readers — it’s
never too late to become one!
The Last Disciple by Hank Hanegraaff and
Sigmund Brouwer is a challenging but rewarding reading
experience. There are many characters and several story
lines going at once, but this story of the early Christians
as they experience the tribulation prophesied by John in
his letter known as the Revelation, is riveting. You will
have a new and deeper appreciation for their
commitment to following Christ and will find yourself
asking, “Do I have what it takes to walk in their
footsteps?”
Jocelyn Green adds another book to her “Heroines
Behind the Lines - Civil War” series with Spy of
Richmond. In her heart, Sophie Kent is a Christian first
and a Southerner second, which leads her to the difficult
conclusion that the only way she can help hasten the end
of slavery and the brutal war over it, is to funnel
pertinent information about events in Richmond to
Union leaders in the North. In other words, she decides
to become a spy. The stakes are high as Sophie tenuously
balances her public life as a devoted Southerner with her
private life as an important source of information,
shelter, and sympathy for the slaves and Union
sympathizers who pass through her home. Green does a
good job of weaving intrigue, compassion, and a bit of
romance into her well-researched novel.
Tracie Peterson and Judith Miller take readers to turn
of the century upstate New York in the book A
Surrendered Heart. Though appearances and a high
standing seem to be society’s ultimate goal, Amanda
Broadmoor has a heart for the needy and down-trodden.
When her father makes some ill-advised investments,
Amanda finds herself pressured to give up her dreams of
a career in medicine to pursue a marriage of monetary
convenience to an older man she has no feelings for
whatsoever. Torn between her love for her family and
her desire to help others, Amanda faces a difficult
decision that will determine the fate of the Broadmoor
legacy forever.
Remember to make every day a day of thanksgiving!
