Costa Rica:V Focal point meeting of IANAS Science

Education Programme-2008, July 10-11, 2008. The V Meeting of Focal Points of the IANAS Science Education Program was hosted by the “Academia Nacional de Ciencias de Costa Rica”. The meetings took place at the Villa Tournon Hotel. Institutions from fifteen countries were represented. Sixteen Academies were represented. J osé A. Lozano from the Academia Colombiana de Ciencias Exactas, was reelected as coordinator of the IANAS Science Education Program and Maria del Carmen Samayoa from the Academy of Sciences of Guatemala was elected as vice-coordinator for the period 2008-2010. The activities for the IAP approved budget of US$25,000 for year 2008 were confirmed and the proposed budget of US$32,000 to be requested for year 2009 from IAP was approved. The distribution and activities of the approved budget for 2008 of US$ 144.100 from OEA-FEMCIDI project was confirmed and a proposed budget of US$160,000 to be requested for year 2009 from OEA-FEMCIDI was approved.

Argentina:Latin American Workshop on Scientific Literacy

November 10-11-12, 2008Two different kinds of activities were programmed and executed.

a) Plenary lectures by local experts and ten international invited lectures, seven of them from Latin American Countries with IBSE projects.

b) Didactic laboratories for teachers as examples of how to improve methodologies to make science education a “learning process” more than a “teaching process”.

In the opening ceremony participated local authorities like the Minister of Education and the President of the Argentine Academy of Science. More than 150 people were always participating. US$1,500 were allocated by IAP-IANAS and US$2,048 were expended.

BrazilIV National meeting of the Brazilian Science

Education Programme, ABC, Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil, 28-30 November, 2008.

The meeting had 280 participants. The following cities were represented nine of ten localities of the ABC project were represented, there were five foreign and 20 Brazilian invited speakers. About 280 people attended the two days meeting. The third day there was a very productive meeting of the representatives of the ABC program with the experts from IANAS and France. GuatemalaVisit of experts of IBSE

Andry Liliana Manrique, from the “Pequeños Científicos” IBSE project from Colombia, conducted a workshop in which a practical demonstration was made on how to conduct an IBSE class to 6 teacher trainers, 2 officials from the Ministry of Education and the IANAS Science Education Program focal point for Guatemala. USD$1,500 were allocated by IAP-IANAS; USD$1,475 were received, USD$1,110 were expended and USD$365 were reimbursed.

PeruSecond InterAmerican Course for Trainers of Elementary School Teachers,

at the “Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), Lima, Perú, 16-20 February, 2009.

The second InterAmerican Course objective was to instruct primary school teachers on IBSE methodology in the learning process of Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. 18 Peruvian and 4 Latin American teachers from Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Guatemala attended the course and 10 instructors participated. Costa Rica:Workshop for training the trainers, for monitors and/or elementary school teachers, Based Science Education (IBSE) in San José, Costa Rica, 17-18 February, 2009

The activities developed from February 17 to 18 in Costa Rica, when the program “Fortalecimiento de la Educación Científica del Ministerio de Educación Pública” (Strengthening Science Education in the Ministry of Public Education). Was presented. As part of this presentation, four workshops were held with the teachers in charge of the pilot plan to be developed in the framework of said program. The meeting was jointly organized by the Inter-American Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS), the Ministry of Public Education of Costa Rica, the National Academy of Sciences of Costa Rica, Estrategia Siglo XXI and the Organization of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). A total of 130 people participated, among them the Vice-Ministry of Education, the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Costa Rica and President of Estrategia Siglo XXI , diplomatic authorities of Chile, Colombia, France and USA, representatives from the field of science and technology, as the president of the National Research Council (CONICIT), eminent scientists and personalities from the private sector, among others. I t is worth noting the numerous principals and teachers from private and public schools. I t is important to emphasize the cooperation that international organizations and diverse countries have offered to the upcoming National program. Dr. Mauricio Duque, from the Programa Pequeños Científicos of Colombia and Dr. Gerardo Brown from Educación Científica Basada en la Indagación, ECBI from Chile, participated in this activity with support from IANAS. US$,3,185.32 were expended, and should be reimbursed

Dominican RepublicTraining the trainers workshop

The workshop was part of the program to launch the IBSE program “La Ciencia en tu Escuela” in the Dominican Republic.

February 25-26, 2009• There was participation of high government officials, the Academy of Sciences, two

universities, and 60 teachers from 10 schools where the program is going to be implemented.

• Five experts from IBSE projects from Mexico, Chile and Colombia acted as facilitators in the workshops.

Colombia.Latin-American workshop on IBSE Assessment and

program evaluation, 26 and 27 January 2009. Bogotá, Colombia

• Seven foreign participants: Enrique Vazini (Argentine), Rosa Cardoso (Perú), Danielle Grynzpan (Brazil), María Heller (Panamá) Patricia López (Chile), María Alejandra González and Claudia Robles (México).

• A total of 25 people participated, seven foreign participants from LatinAmerican countries with IBSE projects, two Colombian experts who are working their PH.D. thesis in Standford and Aalborg Universities on evaluation, using data from the Colombian IBSE project and sixteen people from different regions of Colombia.

• The evaluation efforts and results of Chile, Colombia, Panama, México and Brazil were presented and discussed and information was exchanged.
