The tavern was a famous stage coach stop and hang-out for rivermen who camped out on the King farm fields, every years during the log drives.

Amos Kimball purchased what was known as the Atkinson Farm on January 27th, 1795. Amos bought it from George King Sparhawk and later, (4-23-1827) sold it to John Angier. Angier was a doctor and the old cottage hospital building was built for Dr. Angier in 1827. The doctor was killed after being thrown from his buggy in 1836. Records show Dr. Angier sold the Atkinson farm the same day he purchased it! The land was later known as Wallace Hill and is now Hastings Hill. Angier sold the farm to Dudley C. Kimball. It is likely only a part of the farm was sold because Dr. Angier later sold the farm, or part of it, to Francis D. Kimball on January 8th, 1828. Kimball sold it back to Angier a day later! And, Dr. Angier then sold it to Windsor Cobleigh on April 9th, 1838. Go to the “H” file (Hastings) for the complete sale history of this property.

Covered Bridge …2008 … Restoration is completed on the Bath-Haverhill covered bridge. In

1827 it was mutually decided, between the towns of Bath and Haverhill, to construct a bridge that would span the Ammonoosuc River, just above the point where it ends by emptying into the Connecticut River. The bridge was completed in 1829.

The bridge is of the Town lattice truss design with arches. It is a salt box type and considered to be the oldest covered bridge of this type in the United States.

The original cost was approx. $2400.00 and it was divided between the two towns. The bridge is 256'3" long and has two spans of 104'0"; and 120'9". It has an overall width of 26'8", a roadway width of 14'2", and a maximum vertical clearance of 10'11". There is a sidewalk on the north side of the structure. The bridge was built by Luther Butler and it is said it was built on land and pulled across on skids. Butler was an accomplished stone mason with 179 years of bridge stability as prove. The bridge has withstood floods, log jams, ice jams and vandalism of various kinds, including fire!
