Health care jobs a bright spot for hiring

As the pace of hiring slows and job opportunities dry up, one industry will remain the

Facebook is hiring engineers

No targets were given, but Facebook is growing its engineering team about 60 percent

a year. It could grow faster, but Zuckerberg, 27, doesn’t want growth to overwhelm its

culture. Barely a year after it opened, the Seattle office has about 40 engineers. They’re

about to release several products, including improvements to Facebook’s mobile site.

“There are so many good engineers up here — largely from Microsoft and Amazon tra-

ditionally, and then Google a bit more recently — and there’s a good startup scene up

Carrier Corp. said it plans to create 276 new jobs and invest $36.5 million to start a sec-

ond production line at its plant on the far west side of Indianapolis. The Farmington,

Conn.-based company is requesting tax abatement from the city to help offset the cost

of the investment. The Metropolitan Development Commission granted preliminary

approval at its Wednesday afternoon meeting. The new jobs should pay an average of

$19 an hour and should be filled by the end of 2015, said Carrier, which will retain

1,450 additional jobs with the help of the abatement, it said. The company said it al-

ready spent $32 million to upgrade equipment at the plant at 7310 W. Morris St. to

1,800 Jobs for KY

If you live in Louisville, Ky., have been looking for a job, and love cars, Ford may be

able to help. A second shift is being added to the Louisville plant that will build the new

2012 Escape. The plant is seeking up to 1,800 new employees for the plant, but that

number is a little cloudy, since other workers may transfer from other Ford plants. The

Kentucky Office for Employment and Training in Louisville will be taking applications

for the openings through July 14. The city will then use a lottery system to choose

which applicants will advance to the pre-employment testing phase, and if they pass,

new hires will start off at $15.50 an hour, which is about half of what established em-

Hundreds of Jobs for AZ

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ, AMZN) is creating hundreds of new jobs in Arizona.

Plans to open a fourth fulfillment center in Phoenix have just been announced. With

approximately 1.2 million square feet at this facility added to an expansion of 400,000

square feet at 6835 West Buckeye Road, Phoenix, hundreds of full-time and seasonal

new jobs will be created this year… It is encouraging for national job seekers to know

that Amazon is forging ahead with new facilities and expansions in states in addition to

Arizona. For instance, in Indiana, a new 900,000 square foot fulfillment center should

be completed this summer in Plainfield, bringing the total of Indiana centers to four. In

Pennsylvania, the Breinigsville fulfillment center is also hiring for several hundred

CONSTRUCTION on the long-awaited Shore Club development is set to begin within

months, creating 250 jobs and providing the TCI with a crucial economic shot in the

arm.The $100m Long Bay scheme has been on ice for almost two years amid investiga-

tions into how the land was acquired. Developer Stan Hartling told the Weekly News he

was “very pleased” that an agreement had now been settled with the interim Govern-

Audi will hire 2,100 new workers at its Hungarian unit as it expands the plant into its

fourth fully-fledged production capacity, Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler said on Thurs-

day. Audi said last year it would significantly expand its Hungarian unit, investing a

total of about 900 million euros ($1.3 billion) at Gyor in western Hungary. The payroll

will expand more than previously planned due to the construction of a new press shop,

TWENTY jobs for the long-term unemployed are to be created in Eastleigh thanks to a

£3.3m project to build a new budget hotel. Travelodge has exchanged contracts on its

ond in Eastleigh. The firm has vowed all “entry level” posts at the hotel will go to the

long-term unemployed people from the area, with the roles to be filled through a part-

Budget carrier Cebu Pacific is beefing up its staff to support its aggressive expansion

over the next decade. In a statement on Thursday, the company said that it has 150 new

positions open exclusively for female flight attendants. The hiring of additional cabin

crew will augment Cebu Pacific’s workforce in time for the delivery of four brand-new

Airbus A320 aircraft in the second half of 2011, and 16 brand-new Airbus A320 aircraft

from 2012 until 2014. The company recently announced a $3.8-billion order for 30 Air-

bus A321 Neo and seven Airbus A320 aircraft to be delivered from 2015 until 2021. |

4,000 Jobs for India

Early signs of a slowdown in the broader economy notwithstanding, core sector firms

remain gung-ho about their hiring plans for the year. Power equipment major Bharat

Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) plans to recruit 4,000 people this year to take its staff

strength to over 50,000 by March 2012. Power generator NTPC Ltd will hire close to

900, broadly in line with the 840 recruited last year. Larsen & Toubro plans a 40 per

cent increase in the recruitment of engineering trainees from campuses, especially for

its new activities of heavy engineering and power. The private sector engineering firm,

which added 4,000 employees last year, also plans to take on board management re-

700 Jobs for the UK

Retailer Pets at Home will create more than 700 new jobs this year as it ramps up its store opening program and opens a new £5m distribution centre. The retailer grew sales by 10.7 per cent to £517.8m in the 53 weeks to March 31, while pre tax profits grew by 10.3 per cent to £93m in the same period. Pets, which is based in Handforth in Cheshire, opened 25 new stores bringing its portfolio to 281, and now has a staff of 5,200. 522 Jobs for Ireland

TESCO WILL CREATE over 500 new jobs in Ireland over the next year, it is reported this morning. Tesco Ireland says it will create a total of 522 jobs between now and June next year, RTÉ reports. Most of the new jobs will be in Dublin and Co Kildare and will be part of the €120 million investment in new stores.
