The Hemel Hempstead School Issue 1007 27 January 2017 Email: [email protected] Website: www.hhs.herts.sch.uk HeadLines Well done to all those taking part 'on stage' and behind the scenes in this week's production of The Crucible. Although we are used to excellent performances we must never forget the many hours of work that go into attaining the very high standard set by our Drama team of Mrs Heale and Mr Langley. After almost a year of waiting the school has finally obtained planning consent for the construction of the 3G football pitch on the lower field. There are a few hurdles still to leap before construction can begin, but I hope that the facility will be up and running by the end of the summer term. The project will make a huge difference to the sports facilities in the school. The facilities will also be available for community groups in the area, particularly, but not exclusively, for those playing football for Hemel Town Youth and Hemel Aces; two groups who have been key partners throughout the project and have raised funds towards the cost. The fundraising by students last year and the support of the HHSA were also essential in demonstrating to the Football Foundation that the project was feasible and I am very grateful to all those concerned who have allowed this huge improvement in the school's sports resources to come about. More on the timeline for construction once I have the information. A Starring West End Role for Former HHS Student! Clare Halse, a former student at The Hemel Hempstead School, has won a starring West End role as Peggy Sawyer in a new production of 42nd Street which opens at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane in April. Clare is remembered at school for her remarkable performance as Cosette in the highly acclaimed 2005 school production of Les Miserables. On leaving the school Clare attended the Arts Educational School in Tring and has been cast in many shows since, both in the West End and with touring theatre companies, including Wicked, Hairspray, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Gypsy, Singing in the Rain and Thoroughly Modern Millie. We wish Clare every success in her new role – some staff are looking forward to seeing the production in May.

IMPORTANT REMINDER Parking and Vehicles around the School Site Parents are reminded that when picking up and dropping off students by car they should NOT drive on to the school site unless the student has a physical disability.

PLEASE DO NOT STOP OR PARK NEAR TO

EITHER ENTRANCE (Heath Lane or Anchor Lane).

Students may be dropped off and collected from Beechfield Road or the Sportspace car park in Heath Lane (please be aware of the maximum 20 minutes wait time). When parking in nearby roads please do not park on the pavement (obstructing wheelchair or double buggy access) or across residents’ driveways. If everybody follows these guidelines then we should be able to ensure that the flow of traffic around the school is reasonable at all times, that all users can access the site effectively and, most importantly, that we are able to keep all our students safe. Many thanks.
